Dialectrix – Satellite Official EP Launch

After spending the last year or so accustoming himself to fatherhood and fine tuning his 3rd LP The Cold Light Of Day with long time collaborator Plutonic Lab, Dialectrix is kickstarting 2013 with a rare and limited edition release involving some of the worlds best talents.

The result is Satellite, an exclusive 5 track EP being released to vinyl only (digital D/L included) with each track showcasing an overseas producer while Dtrix exhibits the hunger and versatility the Sydney wordsmith is known for.

Artwork for the EP is being handled by April77 Creative, longtime collaborators with Dialectrix and creators of artwork for Obese Records, Hilltop Hoods, Bliss N Eso and many more. A limited number of Satellite EP will also be packaged with April77′s new book scheduled for release early 2013. The book will showcase an extensive selection of album cover artwork produced by the studio over the past 10 years.

Stop brings a barrage of braggadocio-battle raps intertwined with self assured ridiculousness that screams of live rowdiness over a smacking beat from Germany’s Suff Daddy with the additional finesse of one of Australia’s greatest turntablists DJ Bonez on the cut. Dialectrix shows an introspective view to his inner thoughts on the smooth and esoteric Enjoy The Music featuring the UK’s shining producer Eric Lau with fellow Blue Mountains brethren DJ Morgs of the Thundamentals appearing for a cameo scratch.

Dialectrix then goes in with a vicious delivery and a no holds barred attitude over former Scratch Pervert Mr Thing’s (UK) gigantic What Is This World Coming To?. From the media/social systems to his vehement disappointment in the music industry and the world in general, he leaves no stone unturned as to who and what are ruining the world around him. Sydney Psychosis is a tainted homage to the city over a rolling, hypnotic beat supplied courtesy of New Zealand’s Haz Beats of the notorious Home Brew Crew with cuts executed by the world renowned DJ Revolution.

The title track Satellite is spearheaded by one of LA’s finest beatsmiths Exile delivering his classic soulful chops as Dtrix alikens his position in the world to a satellite bunker with music being his main source to communicate abroad. The Satellite EP is a unique one off approach to mustering an eclectic and foreign soundscape while remaining underpinned with Dialectrix’s familiar and technical flow. Home Brew – Speakeasy Official Album Release Australian Tour

If you don’t know New Zealand’s Home Brew, ask NZ Prime Minister John Key. Or The University of Auckland. Or watch the EPK. Despite what these people might tell you about Home Brew being burdens on society, or advocates for drug dependency, you’ve got to respect the integrity of their independence and the diligence of their work ethic.

Off the back of launching their self-titled double album (the first Hip Hop album to debut at #1 in New Zealand since 2003) by throwing a 48-hour party in an old brothel, having their controversial pop-up store closed down early, then touring the carnage around NZ, Home Brew are bringing the party to Australia.

With support from Australia’s own Sky’High, Home Brew’s Tom Scott, Haz Beats and Lui Silk and their live band are set to play four dates throughout August in Perth August 9th, Melbourne August 10th, Sydney August 11th and Brisbane August 12th.

Home Brew will be showcasing tracks from their critically acclaimed double album – a piece of work that after three years of dedication and benefit fraud, is good enough to move them out of their Mum’s place. Conceptualized by the balance of life’s extremities, one side is light, the other, dark. It’s a dichotomy of methadone and melancholy. Infinity and finality. David Dallas – East Coast Tour

Back by popular demand New Zealand Hip Hop artist David Dallas returns to the East Coast of Australia with his full live band The Daylight Robbery and special guests. David Dallas begins The Rose Tint turning over a new leaf, stating there will be no more sitting round, wishing things were different round here.

And so the tone is set for the South Auckland rappers sophomore album (nominated for NZ Music Award Album Of The Year, Best Urban/Hip Hop Album and Best Male Solo Artist), with his self-motivational dialogue as the running theme. I write songs to inspire myself and hopefully it has that effect on others, says Dallas. The premise of The Rose Tint is not so much about seeing things as better than they actually are, but rather, as Dallas explains, concentrating on things that are going good, or working to make things better, rather than just whining about how things suck.

From a drunken night out conversing with friends about aspirations of greatness on Take A Picture, to being too shy to put yourself out there on Sideline, to getting rid of the people in your life trying to bring you down on Dream, The Rose Tint is universally relatable. I always have to draw from my own internal experiences and how I’m feeling. I figure, if I feel this way, there’s probably a bunch of other people who feel like that too, says David. That’s not to say struggles are ignored on The Rose Tint, as family illness, industry frustrations, and the fear of failure are just some of the issues he wrestles with, however, betterment and perseverance are the overriding messages. Til Tomorrow garnered rave single reviews, topping the online Hype Machine charts, with the superb Special Problems directed vid giving the song new life. The Freddie Gibbs featured Caught In A Daze has cemented Dallas as an artist not to be taken lightly, his smooth delivery appealing to both underground and commercial sensibilities, with the accompanying video the perfect match to the songs laid back vibe.

While duo Fire and Ice handle the majority of the production, P-Money, 41 and Exile also lend a hand to David’s latest offering, with PNC, Jordache and Pieter T rounding out the features. The Rose Tint is David Dallas first full length offering to the US market, and while hes coming in as the underdog, hes not looking to play that position long. His talent has already been recognized on some of the worlds most influential international hip-hop sites including Nah Right, 2dopeboyz, XXL, The Source and 50 Cents own This Is 50 amongst others. Dallas also recently won an MTV US online poll being voted as their Iggy Artist Of The Week, and had his music videos for The Rose Tints Take A Picture and Big Time (from his debut album) added to rotation on all MTV networks across the US – a huge break for any new artist. Take A Picture was also featured on the home page of Youtube, receiving over 100,000 views in just a week.

The Rose Tint was originally available as a free digital download via David’s own website, gathering over 55,000 downloads. The Rose Tint Deluxe is the first time the album is available physically and takes it a step further with four new songs featuring some of the USs greatest talents such as Kid Daytona and Tayyib Ali. There is also a special appearance by Black Moon member, co-founder of Duck Down and all round Hip Hop legend, Buckshot, who joins Dallas on special bonus track Aint Coming Down. The Rose Tint Deluxe is accompanied by a bonus disc of the instrumentals from The Rose Tint.

P-Money Interview on Sky’High

A few weeks ago, New Zealand producer P-Money shared his thoughts and experiences on twitter, regarding the production he did with newly signed Elefant Traks member Sky’high. We caught up with P to delve a little deeper in to his role on the Your Highness EP. Check that out below.

How did you first come across Sky’high and what were your first impressions?
I first saw Sky’high rhyming on a YouTube video early last year posted by Sydney’s Fbi Stolen Records.  After watching that video I asked my mate Sam Dutch from Grindin’ to introduce us (I was hyped). We met at a studio in Sydney where she played me a lot of her music. I liked what I heard but I was leaving for New York in a couple days to help with David Dallas and his Rose Tint project on Duck Down, so we decided I would send her some beats and she could record demos to them. I finally sent a couple beats like a month later and Sky turned around and hit me back with two finished songs within 24 hrs. And they were awesome!

What was the first track that you completed with Sky?
The first song we finished was Look At Me Now. The first few demos came out so good that we (Grindin, Myself and Sky) decided to do an EP. We flew Sky out to NZ to record at my house and she knocked out 7 songs in 4 days!

How did the deal with Elefant Traks eventuate?
We had got the ball rolling with the Look At Me Now video (thanks to @askewone) so we did a second video in Don Dada. People liked that shit and Sky’high got some interest from labels in Australia and NZ.  Sky considered what was on the table and made the decision to roll with Elefant Traks, which I’m very excited about. With Grindin’ as management, ET as the label and me on production, Sky has pulled together a great team to support her awesome talent. Now we have the Your Highness EP available and are currently working on her full length album scheduled for a May release.

Exclusive: Sky’high Interview

Sky’high is Australia’s most compelling hip hop artist yet who displays a raw and aggressive style born from the gutters of Sydney. Tough as nails from a glance but catch a glimpse of that disarming smile and you get a hint there’s a lot more to this character than meets the eye.

Sky’high drops another taste from her upcoming Forever Sky High EP. P-Money provides the killer Don Dada beat for Sky to rip apart with raw lyrics and that signature Sydney flow.

aahh: Your first ‘official’ track ‘Look At Me Now’ has gained a lot of attention, with spins on Triple J and Channel V. Did you expect this kind of reaction? 
Sky’high: To be honest I expect more but that’s just me as an artist always wanting to be bigger than I am already! I get reminded that it’s my first official song out so to have this much attention early on is a good starting point and with time I hope to see my clips get a whole heap more views. 

aahh: The clip that accompanied ‘Look At Me Now’ was directed by the internationally acclaimed, multi-disciplinary artist Askewone who perfectly captured all that encompasses Sky’high as person and MC. Would this be an accurate statement?
Sky’high: Shout out Askewone I was honoured that he created and directed my first video. He did an awesome job and captured me to a ‘T’, he is a truly unique individual. It was good being able to film around my neighbourhood and also feature some of my girls in the video too it was a great experience.

aahh: There’s been a lot of talk about your life growing up in Sydney, and how it shaped you in to the person you are today. Amongst all that other stuff, What was it about hip hop that captured you attention? 

Sky’high: Yeah my upbringing was a bit crazy but I am still living and breathing so I can’t complain. For me Hip Hop was there when no one else was and gave me an outlet to express myself as a person.

aahh: Do you see the positive aspects of hip hop help people in your local community?
Sky’high: Yeah I have got free clothes out of it hahaha. On a serious note as above Hip Hop was there when no one else was, I know a lot of cunts in my community who agree with me on that.

“Never ever been lesser than a Don Dada!”

aahh: Now we are here to talk about the premiere of your latest film clip for the banging track titled “Don Dada”. Tell us a bit about the clip? 
Sky’high: Its live and deadly LOL! Askewone again did this clip and I flew out to Auckland to record this in the studio in front of a green screen so it was completely different from “Look At Me Now”. It was fun to do I got to wear and keep a whole heap of nice clothing so I can’t complain! This was the first track I actually recorded with P-Money in New Zealand straight off the bat…bam I’m a fucking DON DADA! DON DA DON DONDA DON DADA!!

aahh: We hear your quite difficult to work with and that P-Money has quite a bit of patience, would you say that it was the perfect match? 
Sky’high: Difficult to work with as in how? I wrote and recorded a 7 track EP in 4 days with 2 days notice most cunts would find that difficult to accomplish. Is it because other people can’t keep up? I’m not difficult to work but I can be unpredictable as fuck and I suppose some people can’t handle that but that’s me. For someone like P-Money time is money and I don’t like to waste people’s time. 

aahh: Tell us a little about what the heads can expect from you over the coming months?
Sky’high: I got a 7 track EP ready to roll but I will be releasing a few songs with videos before it drops. In the New Year I will be looking to hit the road and perform some shows before releasing my debut album sometime in 2012. Keep an eye out.

Sky’high – Look At Me Now

Sky’high is Australia’s most compelling Hip Hop artist yet who displays a raw and aggressive style born from the gutters of Sydney. Tough as nails from a glance but catch a glimpse of that disarming smile and you get a hint there’s a lot more to this character than meets the eye.

Growing up in the Housing commissions of Maroubra and Ultimo surrounded by a lifestyle of drugs, alcohol and violence it’s a surprise Sky found the will to do anything other than succumb to criminal influences and/or depression. Yet Sky channeled the frustration and despair of her upbringing into an incredibly vital and energizing representation of her life via rap and song and the results are incredible.

Sky’high (real name Skhai Gerrey) sights Scottish, Aboriginal and Fijian roots and describes herself as a “True blue Aussie through and through”. Her grandmother was an original “go-go” dancer in Sydney’s notorious Kings Cross and her mother ran strip clubs/pubs so the nightclub scene, and of course the music to be found within, was never too distant from a young Skhai. There was certainly a lot of trouble to get into as a youngster but at 15 she put pen to paper writing her first rhymes and thankfully began a path towards music and away from the lure of street life.

Sky’s unmistakable style and delivery is generating buzz throughout the Australian Hip Hop community and earning respect from her peers who voted her Best Female MC at this years “OzHipHop.Com Awards”. After bubbling under the radar for a minute with mixtapes and web videos Sky’high is now set to make her mark in a very distinct way. Sky’high has just dropped a new track and clip titled Look At Me Now and the track is fire! Look At Me Now is produced by P-Money with the video directed by AskewOne.
