Seth Sentry – This Was Tomorrow

6 09 2012

It’s been four years since Seth Sentry released his The Waiter Minute EP, that featured the huge hit single The Waitress Song. Seth is now ready to storm Australia with his debut LP This Was Tomorrow. Released today, Seth has already dropped two massive single’s from the album, in the form of My Scene and Float Away.

Seth describes his anxiousness in getting the release in to the hands of his fans. “I’m feeling excited and nervous, the album’s finished now, so I just want to get it out there.” Describing the concept behind This Was Tomorrow, Seth explains “I guess the album is pretty random in the topics that I cover. I talk about things that I want, where I am in my life and where I’ve come from. You could say it’s all about the past, present and future. In terms of the future, I have written a letter to science where I ask where the fuck my hover board is.” Since his debut The Waiter Minute EP, Seth’s identifies his biggest change, and that has been his confidence level. “When I first started working with Matik I was just trying to find my sound, something that I was happy with. I consider myself a wordy rapper and I have some pretty heavy influences, it took time to find the style that I was happy with. Coming into it this album, I guess didn’t have to do that searching. I was able to concentrate on making the music I wanted to make.”

The first single from the album was released earlier this year and was Seth’s way of letting everyone know he is on his way. My Scene, a light-hearted humorous track, raises questions of human identity and lifestyle. “I guess it’s easy to identify groups of people in society from an outside perspective. We can easily say ‘oh that’s a hipster’ or ‘that’s a business man’ but for me personally, it was a lot harder to pin down. I guess a lot of people find that’s the case, they’re not quite sure where they fit in amongst society and even with their peers. It was just where my head was at the time and also what I had seen. A lot of people say, ok I’m going to be like this and go out and purchase the ‘costume’. I had a friend who was a mad goth, I didn’t see him for a few years and then I bumped into him one day on the street and he was a full Rastafarian, with the dreads and coloured beanie to match. It’s just weird how people do that”.

Victorian producer and DJ, Matik produced Seth’s debut EP and is back again helping out on This Was Tomorrow. “Matik has produced five joints on this album, he’s a lot busier now then he was 10 years ago. I hooked up with Matik about 5 years ago when I was putting on a weekly club night. Matik was working with Pez back then, as a crew. I had got my hands on a demo they had at the time and there was this real cute track on there called Summer Days, which is now the Festival Song, but it was a little different back then. It was about surfboarding and riding scooters and all that. So I got them out.”

The second single from the album is titled Float Away and is produced by Styalz Fuego (360, Aston Shuffle) who also produces 5 tracks on the album. The film clip for Float Away is directed by Grey Ghost (Jeremedy). “Grey Ghost is the loveliest cunt, he is the best dude, like they nicest dude you’ll ever meet. He is also super creative, he can do it all. Draw, rap, sing, he is in a heap of a bands and wanted to try his hand at making videos. He directed one of Xavier Rudds videos and also worked with Matik. We had this idea of doing the clip in this crazy Woody Allen/Faulty Towers vibe, I love how it turned out.”

Float Away was the first track that Seth worked on with Styalz. “Styalz is amazing, all his beats, drums and horns are classic. When you work with him, he provides you with everything, the beat is structured, everything’s there, all the bridges, he is very fast. He is just one of those dudes that is always in the studio, he’s constantly inspired and inspiring, he’s a real pro. For Float Away he sent me this beat that was real cute and simple in style. Obviously not in structure. It wasn’t something that I’d consider my usual style. The beat had elements of pop, nothing against dudes doing that, I just prefer listening to heavy hitting classic’s, but this had something that drew me in. I wrote 3 different versions and performed 3 different takes and picked that track. I’m so wordy, it’s not easy for me to sometimes pull it back. In this track there’s an 8 bar verse a 16 and a 12, which are mammoth bars. I was thinking the track would be good for a single, it had a lighter sound and I didn’t have to sacrifice the lyrical side of things, none of this dumb shit.”

Seth Sentry’s new LP This Was Tomorrow will be released on September 14 on his newly created label High Score Records, with independent distribution through Inertia. You can pre-order now and score yourself some cool pre-order bonus’, if you hurry. Also just announced is his massive 14 date This Was Tomorrow album tour which includes stops at Fat As Butter and Sprung Festivals.I’ll be taking B. Two, who won this year’s DMC’s championships. He was defending his title from 08′ because there hasn’t been a DMC in Australia for the last 4 years. He is a beast and massively overqualified to be my DJ. I will also be bringing Grey Ghost.”

Seth Sentry – This Was Tomorrow

17 07 2012

It has arrived. The debut album from Melbourne MC Seth Sentry will be unleashed on September 14. The album, titled This Was Tomorrow, is a ground breaking and utterly relatable hip-hop masterpiece. To bring the album to the fans, Seth has announced a 14-date tour through cities and regional centres in September and October, including appearances at Fat As Butter and Sprung Festivals.

From the incredible success of The Waitress Song (2009), to the current radio smash singles My Scene and the brand new second single, Float Away, This Was Tomorrow is indicative of the exponential rate at which local hip-hop is evolving. Bold, atmospheric and almost orchestral; it is a grand and ambitious gesture from a humble and entirely creative artist. Not contempt with cashing in and selling out, Seth Sentry has laid the foundations for his future by setting up his own record label, High Score Records, with independent distribution through Inertia. This Was Tomorrow will be the label’s first release. The album comes down to how big a music fan Seth Sentry is.

Within the context of hip-hop, he is both a student and a master… a protégé. An aficionado who wanted to be a part of the world of music he could lose himself in as a listener. And even though it is still early in the game, Seth Sentry’s contributions to this world are already nothing short of outstanding. This Was Tomorrow will be released September 14. The This Was Tomorrow album tour happens throughout September and October. Tickets on sale August 2. Seth Sentry’s brand new single Float Away with production from Styalz Fuego, is available on iTunes now.

Sietta – The Seventh Passenger (Out Now)

25 07 2011

Be prepared to be impressed by the fiery electronic soul of Darwin duo Sietta, and their debut album The Seventh Passenger. With a voice influenced by the rugged blues of Etta James and Memphis Minni, Caiti Baker’s powerful presence and themes of empowerment, love and hurt leave an unforgettable mark on the listener.

In another time she may have gone down an R&B/pop path – such is her rich soaring delivery. Thankfully, Sietta didn’t dumb down; embracing a grittier direction, coated in a disarmingly alluring voice. As Kahlil Gibran said: ‘Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart’. Crucial to what makes Sietta special is producer James Mangohig’s street-smart bass and drums, a reimagined electronic sound heavily influenced by hip hop. You have to be a real music lover to bring together indie sensibilities and dubstep aesthetics, rhythm & blues and industrial sounds into a soul joint. Only then to strip it all back to an acoustic jam revealing a universal appeal that floors even the most guarded listener. The Seventh Passenger was co-produced and mixed by APRA and AIR Award winning producer Count Bounce (Sparkadia, Urthboy, Ash Grunwald).

Sietta are hitting the road supporting The Herd on their Future Shade Tour kicking off next month. Dates are listed at www.elefanttraks.com

D’Opus & Roshambo – new album ‘Past Time’ out early April through Mercury Switch/Inertia

21 03 2011

Canberra producer & emcee duo D’Opus & Roshambo have teamed up again to bring out their long-awaited second LP Past Time, which includes the promotional single Come Find Out featuring Chanel Cole. The album will be released on April 8 on Mercury Switch Lab through Inertia.

The duo have drawn from a pool of Australian artists to collaborate on songs throughout Past Time, with Hau (Koolism), Muph (Muph & Plutonic), Dialectrix, Scott Burns, and Mdusu all contributing guest verses to the album. Chanel Cole, member of trip hop group Spook, provides her unique voice on the tracks Bring Happiness and Come Find Out. Nearly three years on since their successful last album The Switch, the duo describe the evolution of themes on Past Time:“‘The Switch’ was, for the most part, a kind of story-telling record, soaked in the experience of melancholy, the darkness of regret, and of disappointment in self. This album [Past Time] is drenched in feelings of relief, happiness, contentment, excitement and opportunity. It is a record about moving on and traveling to a brighter future.”

Tracklist:
01. All I Need
02. Come Find Out (w/ Chanel Cole)
03. No One (I Can Depend On) (w/ Hau)
04. Sound Is A Weapon
05. Action Montage
06. Left To Right (The D’O Funk)
07. Bring Happiness (w/ Chanel Cole)
08. Addictive (w/ Jeff Hann)
09. My Space (w/ Muph)
10. Run To The Sun (w/ Junior)
11. The Push Over
12. Tell Her No (w/ Mdusu, Scott Burns & Dialectrix)
13. Terrorist Is Us

To celebrate the new album the guys are giving away a free album tune Left To Right (The D’O Funk) thanks to the good people at Inertia. It’s a nice and simple groove, sending dedication to the DJ (in this case Mr. D’Opus himself). We hope you like the tune and please feel free to download it by visiting the link below and share it with your friends.

Syntax – The Musical (August 23)

11 07 2010

Who is Syntax? The name might not immediately ring a bell, but if you’ve been familiar with Australia’s burgeoning hip-hop-scene long enough, you’ve more than likely had subconscious exposure to the Gold Coast veteran’s not inconsiderable talents.

With an apprenticeship served as one third of Queensland mainstays Trace Elements – the crew that birthed this country’s most preeminent hip-hop producer, M-Phazes – and time spent on the road with such luminaries as Bliss N Eso, Phrase and US emcee Supastition, there’s no doubt that Syntax has put paid to that old hip-hop notion of “paying dues”. What’s most surprising about the artist born Andrew Archer is that – despite numerous enthusiastically-received mixtapes and a formidable live reputation – he has never officially released an album… until now.

Syntax’s full-length debut, The Musical, is a hip-hop record in the classic mould of Illmatic, Ready To Die and Reasonable Doubt – a confidently individual emcee at the helm, a tight track listing, a smattering of hand-picked guests, and stellar beat selections from a handful of the best producers of the moment. It sounds local, but thinks global in its approach to time-honoured hip-hop craftsmanship.

In a rap scene where a hoarse ocker drawl is de rigueur, Syntax’s nasal Q-Tip-by-way-of- Drapht delivery clearly stands out from the pack over the album’s 16 tracks. Emphasising its potency are colourful musical backdrops provided by the likes of M-Phazes (Triple J Feature Album for Good Gracious, February 2010) and Matik (Pez’s ‘The Festival Song’, Seth Sentry’s ‘The Waitress Song’), as well as rising stars SDub, Whisper and Mules (one half of celebrated Gold Coast crew Choose Mics, whose dusty loop-based beats account for half of the LP’s tracks).

On the guest appearance front, The Musical boasts collaborations with emcees from across the cultural divide: Kam Moye (the artist formerly known as Supastition) adds his southern-fried North Carolina drawl to the soulful Onwards, while South Australian star-in-the-making Prime (Pagen Elypsis) makes his presence clearly felt on the wack emcee-slaughtering Talk. Meanwhile, Birmingham-to-Gold-Coast transplant Haunts (also of Choose Mics) contributes comic relief and unmistakable Brummy slang to the jazzy Action.

Topped off with hand-illustrated artwork by celebrated Sydney artist and hip-hop connoisseur Mark Drew, The Musical is a throwback to the glory days of rap record-making. Funk-fuelled lead single Build! probably best sums up the spirit of the record: ‘Do the time, put in work, feel the love back / one music, one love, we love rap.’ It’s a love that drips from every pore of Syntax’s being, and from the chapters of The Musical itself.
Syntax’s – The Musical will be released via Soulmate Records/Inertia on 23 August 2010.

Kid Koala Presents The Slew: Live – Seth Sentry announced as National Support

24 03 2010

With excitement building for Kid Koala Presents The Slew hitting Australian stages for the first time in May, it is with great pleasure that we announce Seth Sentry as national support for the tour (except Perth).

After being Unearthed by Triple J early last year and receiving a prestigious J Award nomination at year’s end, the fresh-faced Melbourne emcees highly celebrated and acclaimed track The Waitress Song (taken from the debut extended player The Waiter Minute EP) set the record for the most downloaded track ever on triplejunearthed.com (over 46,000) and ended up taking out the 31st position in the world’s largest annual music poll, Triple J’s Hottest 100.
Supporting Kid Koala Presents The Slew alongside Seth Sentry, much celebrated DJ Bonez will make an appearance at the Melbourne show, with DJ James Dela Cruz on the decks in Sydney.

In one of the most exciting collaborations to grace the stage in years, Canadian turntable masters Kid Koala and Dynomite D team up with former Wolfmother crew Chris Ross and Myles Heskett to create a psych/heavy-rock-drenched project The Slew.
Featuring a hefty six turntables with Chris and Myles from Wolfmother on bass and drums. Hitting up major capital cities across Australia in May, it’s turntablism like you’ve never seen it before.
Four and a half years ago, Eric San (aka Kid Koala) and Dylan J. Frombach (aka Dynomite D) started working on a rock record. The pair, who met on the Beastie Boys tour in 1998, had been approached to soundtrack a documentary feature film. The film was eventually abandoned, but with Mario Caldato (longtime producer for Beastie Boys) on board for mixing, San and Frombach were already deep into the psych rock-influenced score and there was no turning back.
Teaming up with Chris Ross and Myles Heskett – the former rhythm section of Grammy Award-winning band Wolfmother The Slew set out to put together a full-blown rock band experience to do justice to the material in a live setting. And justice was served: The truly excessive six turntables, drum, bass, keyboard and wall of amps that made their way across North America this October made for a full-on raw, pummeling rock experience. The Optimen Announce New Single – Fire Fighters

16 12 2009

With the release of their sophomore album The Out of Money Experience just around the corner, Brisbane’s The Optimen are proud to present the first single to be lifted from it, Fire Fighters. For a limited time Fire Fighters is available for free streaming and download at:

·Album version only
·Album & Clean versions

The Optimen are also proud to announce they have signed an exclusive distribution deal for the forthcoming album with Inertia. The Out of Money Experience is due for release early 2010.

Fire Fighters
In writing the new album, Fire Fighters was the first track that didn’t take much convincing on any part. Already introduced as a staple to their live set, with its infectious hook and ground-moving bass groove, it set the standard early and in many ways served as an indicator to the direction the album was heading. Starting with a breathy drum break lifted from a mysterious Japanese LP that Kristoff purchased for 100 yen in Shibuya, Sammsonite didn’t waste any time in building a track around it. When DATS suggested the minimal vocal flourishing sounded like an exclamation of “Fire! Fire!” the theme took shape. DJ Damage laid his cuts in the break and so the album began – in the true co-operative nature of the group. As a side note, Kristoff admits “We actually don’t know where this record is, or even who it is! It went missing from the studio before we could translate the kanji from the cover!”

In turning a small sample from a 7” into the first single, The Optimen added their own layers, including a rich coating of horns, live drums and breaks from Myka Wallace (Laneous & The Family Yah), backing vocals from Laneous himself and keys from Greg Arnott.

Fire Fighters
is the first taste of The Optimen’s sophomore album The Out of Money Experience which is scheduled for release March 2010 through Inertia.
