Katalyst – Deep Impressions [Out Today]

16 09 2011

Internationally renowned, ARIA nominated producer Katalyst returns with new album Deep Impressions, set for release today via Invada Records / Remote Control. The follow up album to his highly acclaimed 2007 album What’s Happening, a former triple j feature album, Deep Impressions is Katalyst’s third full length album and his most impressive work to date.

The latest product of his audiophiliac obsession, Deep Impressions deconstructs and distils soul, hip hop, funk, jazz, reggae and electro influences into what is perhaps most accurately described as “the Katalyst sound“. Deep Impressions is a reflection of the large variety tunes that influence Katalyst’s own musical direction. On the title of the album, Katalyst says, “Writing music for me is a continual process so when it came time to put the third Katalyst album together I looked at the songs I had written and recorded for the new release. As a body of work it was clear that many styles of music have made a deep impression on me as a producer. Hence the name of my album.”

On Deep Impressions, Katalyst collaborated with the likes of Los Angeles hip-hop artist Bootie Brown (of The Pharcyde), Sydney’s own KweenG (KillaQueenz), underground legend Mr Clean, and upcoming North Carolina MC Coin Locker Kid. Katalyst also teams up with long-term collaborators Stephanie McKay (USA), Steve Spacek (UK), Hau (Koolism), and Jade MacRae.

Katalyst is Sydney-based producer Ashley Anderson, one of Australia’s most prolific producers. Over the past two decades Katalyst has risen to the top of the Australian hip hop and electronica scenes, receiving multiple ARIA and J Award nominations along the way. His reputation as one of Australia’s best producers has seen him collaborate with the likes of Geoff Barrow of Portishead, Aloe Blacc, Dead Prez, Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, J-Live, Finale, Frank n Dank, Diverse, Ugly Duckling, and Steve Spacek (who together form Space Invadas). Katalyst has performed alongside The Roots, Jack Johnson, Jurassic 5, DJ Shadow, The Black Eyed Peas and Mix Master Mike and Ben Harper, and has also performed at Splendour In The Grass, Big Day Out, Homebake, The Falls Festivals, and Good Vibrations.

Katalyst announces 3rd album ‘Deep Impressions’ and drops a free mixtape ‘Back To Basics Vol. 1′

10 08 2011

Internationally renowned, ARIA nominated producer Katalyst returns with new album Deep Impressions, set for release on the 16th of September 2011 via Invada Records / Remote Control. The follow up album to his highly acclaimed 2007 album What’s Happening, a former triple j feature album, Deep Impressions is Katalyst’s third full length album and his most impressive work to date.

The latest product of his audiophiliac obsession, Deep Impressions deconstructs and distils soul, hip hop, funk, jazz, reggae and electro influences into what is perhaps most accurately described as “the Katalyst sound”. Deep Impressions is a reflection of the large variety tunes that influence Katalyst’s own musical direction. Katalyst also teams up with long-term collaborators Stephanie McKay (USA), Steve Spacek (UK), Hau (Koolism), and Jade MacRaeKatalyst also dropped a free mixtape today tilted Back To Basic’s Vol. 1, which you can grab below by using the down arrow in the player. This is what Katalyst had to say about this little project.

“As I prepare to release my 3rd album, Deep Impressions, I put together this mix to share some of the music that had made an impression on my over my 20 years of collecting. I have drawn extensively from this resource in the creating of my own music, as have many that have gone before me. This is a collection of tunes that have been used in the creative process to make what we know as hip hop. Many of the songs are themselves classics that have a beautiful and still poignant message and vibe. Others contain fleeting moments of beauty that have been captured and reinterpreted to make modern day classics. Apart form a few sneaky edits (to highlight the moments used by some of the best producers to have turned on a sampler) the tunes are as they appear on the original wax. This series is dedicated to one of my music inspirations and heroes The Left Rev Eugene McDaniel’s who passed away 29th July 2011. If your reading this and don’t know who the great man was…… do yourself a favour and get familiar! This is Part 1…. more in the series to follow so stay tuned… “ Peace, - KATALYST

Koolism – The Umu (Sept. 3)

1 09 2010

Koolism are considered to be one of Australia’s first ever hip hop groups. They formed in 1992, and consist of world-class DJ Danielsan, and equally as impressive emcee Hau. They were the first Hip Hop outfit in Australia to win an ARIA award for their album Part 3 – Random Thoughts in 2004.
The Umu is dedicated to the essence of original and classic hip hop. What does the album’s name mean you ask? As Hau puts it:

“‘Umu is a Tongan word for an underground oven. It’s a long and tiring process in which to prepare and to cook food slowly and thoroughly, but its results are rewarding and enjoyed by all who feast on it. That’s what I feel this album is like. A lot of time, money, heart and soul went into making this album. But after all that, the fruits of our labour are now ready to enjoy. And you know how Tongans eat, so you better get a big plate and fill it up!”

Koolism were, and still are one of the most respected hip hop groups in Australia. These veteran hip hoppers have toured extensively and supported some of the biggest names: De La Soul, Grandmaster Flash, J5, The Roots, Jazzy Jeff, the list goes on and on..as well as playing all the major summer festivals. The release of The Umu puts them back in the game and we look forward to all it delivers!
The Umu drops this Friday September 3.

Koolism – Behind The Scenes IX (Can’t Stand It)

1 07 2010

Koolism has started their journey back into the game and in this video you get to play fly on the wall and watch Hau laying down the first verse to Koolism’s new single, Can’t Stand It. Ignorant crew duck down!

Canberra’s finest, Koolism, are back! The mighty combination of emcee Hau Latukefu and DJ Danielsan Ichiban return more vitriolic, more pissed off, than ever. On Can’t Stand It, Hau takes fire at the Australian government’s policy of refugee detaining, the seeming hypocracy of lambasting Pauline Hanson but cheering for her on Dancing With The Stars and the general air of insouciance and apathy.

Can’t Stand It is the first taste of Koolism’s long-awaited fourth record The Umu which will drop later this year. (Aug/Sept) Be prepared to think while you dance.
Stay tuned for more production footage, recording sessions and other shenanigans from The Dojo Studios and KOA HQ, as the boys create their brand-spankin’ new album, The Umu (pron. oo-moo).

Koolism – Cant Stand It (Stream)

22 06 2010

Koolism have just leaked their brand new single Can’t Stand It. The track is making waves at the moment and has made a few ears twitch and a lot of heads turning.DJ Danielsan as always provides the backdrop to this up-tempo track, while Plutonic Lab chips in with the drums.

As for the words, emcee Hau, explains: “The lyrics were inspired by, to put it simple and plain, a lot of fuckery in this country. I definitely believe we have it a lot better than many places around the world, but at the same time, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to voice my opinion on particular things I feel are wrong. Since I have the opportunity to say something I feel is worth while, then I’;m going to capitalise on that. If you’re offended, then the shoe must fit. Wear it.”

Can’t Stand It is the tune to jump off their forth-coming album, The ‘Umu’ due out mid-2010. Below you can stream Koolism’s new track Can’t Stand It and also while your down there, check out the little doco about the name behind the album. ‘The Umu’.

Hau – Love The Beast Mixtape (FREE)

11 02 2010

On Hau’s down time he likes to do a lot of writing and recording. Koolism business gets taken care of first, but every other chance he gets, he’s busting into someone’s studio to make music. That’s why you’ll hear Hau working with the likes of Astronomy Class, Urthboy, A-Love, Hilltop Hoods, Resin Dogs... etc etc. Not only because they are his peoples, but just because he loves to make music. Well, penning lyrics and rapping them. Hau’s also gotta big up the folks who have played hospitable producers/ engineers like Katalyst, D’Opus, BVA, DJ Bonez, Trials and the list goes on and on…

So, that brings us to this release here. Bits and pieces Hau’s been working on, with original beats and other people’s instrumentals. Instead of it gathering audio dust, Hau’s decided to unleash it on to you, the listener, in the form of a mixtape called ‘Love the Beast’. Named after the Eric Bana doco. (No, he won’t be on here, so don’t get too excited.)
Anyway, this will be available as a FREE download on Valentine’s Day. So if you’re stuck for ideas on what to get your partner… BAM! Here it is. Did I mention it will be free?

Gotta give a mighty, man shout to Jacob Giles who has helped Hau put this one together. A very talented (not to mention patient) chap who, is on the verge of great things. Watch this space!
Hold tight for the link. Pop back on Valentine’s Day folks, in the mean time check out this mean track ‘Believe’ originally by Brad Strut (prod. Beat Butcha) found on his ‘Fallout Shelter’ EP. The ‘Refix’ by Hau, can be downloaded for free here. You can also check the track out below. NEW TRACK ADDED – Proud

Koolism New Track – Hanz High

12 01 2010

Koolism dropped a gem of an email today to those on their mailing list, calling it a belated Xmas present (cheers guys!).
I like the style Koolism use’s to deliver these types of free downloads (see Jam Master Jay Tribute post/track here). I hope we can expect to see some more freebies leading up to the release of The Umu, which is expected sometime 2010. Here is a little bit of what Hau had to say about the free track titled Hanz High (see artwork above).

This is just another example of what Daniel and I can come up with on the spontaneous tip.

We were working on ‘The ‘Umu’ in the Dojo, listening to a few records when Daniel came across a few bits and pieces that sounded like they could be a seed for a boomin’ track. He started collecting bits from here and there (naaah, no specifics with that one) and the tune started to develop into a monster.
Naturally, I started writing to it – firstly, in my head, then jotting ideas onto paper. The chorus served as the inspiration to the lyrics. The boomin’ “C’mon and raise your hands hiiigh!” could have been the driving force behind a great party track, but meh… that was too obvious. So I started thinking about the police and their overly aggressive approach to such insignificant things (as you will hear the tune).

A day or two later, we recorded the vocals. Upon completion, we both thought, “wow, this is a top tune”, but we couldn’t see it working cohesively with the rest of the tracks we have already done for the album. So, here we are. Instead of letting it gather electronic dust in the hard drive (like many other tunes we have done), we’ve decided to unleash it to you guys – the appreciative music fan. So next time you’re about to instigate a riot or warming up in the footy sheds, throw this on and get hype!

Oh, 10 points to the person who can guess the inspiration behind the intro.
