Bliss N Eso Announce New Album ‘Circus In The Sky’ + ‘House Of Dreams’ Tour

20 05 2013

The Frontier Touring Company and Illusive are excited to announce iconic hip-hop trio Bliss N Eso’s highly-anticipated return to the touring circuit this July with their House of Dreams tour. This tour announcement comes off the back of the release of Home Is Where The Heart Is - the first official single from their upcoming new album Circus In The Sky.

Bliss N Eso Circus In the Sky album cover

The six-date tour will cover all mainland capital cities in the band’s first headline tour since 2011 when they embarked on the highest-selling tour by an Australian hip-hop act. This is the first chance fans will get to experience the tracks from Circus In The Sky in the flesh, alongside the cult classics from their back catalogue. Bliss N Eso will be joined by two very special guests – Alabama’s rising star Yelawolf and local superstar Pez.

Since signing to Eminem’s Shady Records in 2011, Yelawolf has become one of the world’s most hyped emerging rap artists. In the years since, he’s released his critically acclaimed debut album Trunk Muzik and featured on tracks alongside the likes of Ed Sheeran, Big Boi, A$AP Rocky, Big K.R.I.T. and Travis Barker just to name a few.

Melbourne’s Pez made his welcome return to the spotlight in recent months with the release of his latest single The Game and is tipped for an enormous 2013. Bliss N Eso have also confirmed the release date for their upcoming new album Circus In The Sky as Friday 28 June 2013. It follows on from 2010’s hugely acclaimed Running On Air which debuted at #1 on the ARIA Album Chart and achieved platinum sales.

Solidifying their reputation as artists that love to pack as much value as possible into each release, they’ve delivered another 17-track epic with a running time of an hour. As rumoured, it features a guest appearance from New York hip-hop icon Nas on I Am Somebody – arguably their biggest feature to date. Further down the tracklisting are appearances from nomadic Melbourne soul export Daniel Merriweather on Can’t Get Rid of This Feeling and rising American singer-songwriter Ceekay Jones, whom the boys befriended on their most recent US headline tour. Possibly the most interesting inclusion on the tracklist comes via posse cut Reservoir Dogs, which features a who’s who of contemporary local hip-hop – seeing them joined by 360, Pez, Seth Sentry and Drapht.

The mysterious winged character that has inhabited the band’s two previous album covers has made its third appearance on the newly revealed ‘Circus in the Sky’ artwork, albeit in an unexpected form. Following from Steve Cross’ illustrated covers on Flying Colours and Running On Air, the band have teamed up with world-renowned digital artist Justin Maller to create a spectacularly vivid piece which sees the character looking towards Earth from afar. Justin is a Melburnian living in New York who has worked with the likes of Nike, Coca-Cola and the Grammys.

Circus In The Sky is now available for pre-orderr. There are a half a dozen pre-order options which include a digital version (including instant Home Is Where The Heart Is single download); signed CDs accompanied by t-shirts, iPhone covers and stubby holders alongside bundled packs including the album and House Of Dreams Tour tickets.

Circus In The Sky drops June 28, through Illusive.

It is this distinctive style along with her stage presence & artistic depth which makes her one of Australia’s most exciting & original new artists. After being discovered by Professor Griff (Public Enemy), Candice was flown to Atlanta, Georgia to record her first demo CD produced by Griff himself. There she worked with Atlanta’s Jason Orr (The FunkJazz Kafe) in 2003 and later returned to to the US in 2005 where she recorded with Neo-Soul Producer, Rich Medina in Harlem NYC.

Candice returned to her new home in Melbourne and formed her stunning five piece band, The Optics, whose first album, In My Soul, was released on Freestyle Records UK in 2010. The band are currently recording a second album for release this year on Freestyle.

Over the last 8 years in Melbourne Candice earned her stripes and became a staple crop vocalist on the local hip hop and soul scenes singing backing vocals for a host of Melbourne bands including Diafrix, SIB, Direct Influence, Carmen Hendricks, Saritah and Traffik to name but a few. She has featured in collaborations with many local Hip-hop artists most notably the track Goodbye Gravity with M-Phazes and Muph (of Muph and Plutonic), singing the hook on the lead single to the M-Phazes album Good Gracious which won an ARIA.

She also featured on a track called Me Vs World, on the latest album by Simplex, as well as appearing on Moneykat’s single Nothing Is Safe produced by Lotek and stars in their new video clip for the song. Candice is also the front-woman for Metals (Illusive Records) who’s latest single was a collaboration written with rapper 360, and producer Styalz Fuego. She has also collaborated with 1/6, Kojo (of Culture Connect), Motley, 14 year old prodigy rapper Soliloquy. Luka Lesson on their collaboration Killing Time and US rapper Louis Logic.

Hilltop Hoods – Drinking From The Sun No.1 on ARIA Charts

19 03 2012

Hilltop Hoods are officially the first Australian act to land at No.1 on the ARIA charts this year, deposing pop star Adele from her top spot with their sixth album titled Drinking From The Sun.

It is the hip-hop kings’ third album in a row to debut at No.1, following on from 2006′s The Hard Road and State Of The Art in 2009. Only Michael Buble, Foster The People and Lana Del Rey have stolen the No.1 spot from Adele’s juggernaut album 21 this year before the Hoods claimed the top spot this week.

The Hoods are now touring the US and Canada and will return to Australian shows with the Groovin’ The Moo festival in May.

Vents – Marked For An ARIA

23 11 2011

Congratulations go out to Golden Era Records artist Vents with news that his album Marked For Death snagged an ARIA nomination for ‘Best Urban Album’. Vents sophomore release Marked for Death was produced by Trials from The Funkoars, with the album featuring Golden Era label mates Hilltop Hoods, and Sesta from The Funkoars.

Also big congratulations to Trials who not only produced Vents’ – Marked For Death but also primarily produced 7 time ARIA nominee Drapht’s – The Life Of Riley album, including the track, Rapunzel which was also nominated for Single Of The Year. We catch up with the man of the moment, Vents as he prepares to grace the official red carpet at the 2011 ARIA awards, or at least check it out on TV.

aahh: The Marked For Death LP was released earlier this year through your home of homes Golden Era Records and has been nominated for the 2011 Best Urban Album, congratulations. How are you feeling about the nomination?

Vents: Thanks. I’ve been on the road non-stop since June so I’ve been pretty busy and I haven’t really thought about it that much but I probably should give it some thought as it’s coming up in two weeks. I’m honestly not expecting us to actually win but I would have never even thought we’d be nominated for an ARIA award (especially for this album) so it was a really nice surprise to hear that we were nominated and it’s been cool to see our family and friends so excited about it. I think everyone including our fans were just as surprised as me that this happened but we’ve had nothing but support from people. I saw a thread on one of the forums, where most people were rooting for us to win and that meant a lot to me and made me pretty happy. With that said, I’m trying not to invest too much energy in the whole thing and just concentrate on making songs that I’m proud of and being a good live performer and anything that comes after that is a bonus. But I’m going to try to have a good time on the night and I heard it’s a five-course meal which will be a first for me. I need to meet Kyle Sandilands if I can make that happen.

aahh: It was 4 years between albums, did you expect to be nominated for an ARIA at the end of it?
Vents: Nope; never.

aahh: You’ve currently been on tour with a man who had a lot to do with the success album in the form of producer/human Trials. Will you shout him a beer if you take home the award?
Vents: We’re gonna get smashed either way. I tend to go a bit overboard sometimes so I don’t even want to think about it…

aahh: Will you get him to shout you a beer if some of his other work stops you from taking home that ARIA?
Vents: Again, we’re getting hammered regardless – haha. Trials is one of my closest mates and we’ve known each other since we were kids. He has always looked out for me and to see him doing so well is a big thing for me. No one’s stopping me from doing anything but myself. Trials and me have never came together with the intention of winning ARIA’s, and we both know that. I think he’s probably as surprised as I am about the whole thing. It’s never been a competition between Drapht and myself and I’m not going to turn it into that. They’re both very different albums that were both very well received in different regards and I think that’s evidence of Trials’ talent and diversity as a producer and wizard in the studio. I think that for the most part jealousy is a weak emotion for flimsy cunts. That, and there’s always next year.

aahh: Currently you are on tour, how have the audiences been responding?
Vents: We’re touring with the Funkoars at the moment and they always get pretty rowdy crowds and they are usually the best crowds to perform to. Touring is always an interesting experience and I don’t want it to end because I love the grind so much but I’m really tired and need a break to stay in one place for a while and get my routine back and start working on music again. People have been going bananas to the new songs and they’re much easier to perform live but we try to chuck a few old ones in for good measure so we don’t look like cunts.

aahh: Another man that’s also played a huge part in the album, is that man on the decks Mr Adfu. He has also been joining you on stage both in a emceeing point of view and also jumping behind the decks when he can. What’s it like having someone like Fu at your disposal?
Vents:  Fu and Trials are really the one who make everything happen. I really only ever wanted to be an MC and that’s all I know how to do so I’m lucky to have such a strong unit around me that allows me to concentrate on being good at that. Fu is one of those rare personalities who loves hip-hop as much as I do and we both love to go hard on stage and we definitely feed off of each others energy. He’s also one of the best sound engineers in the hip-hop circuit which is handy.

aahh: The brand new film clip for Marked for Death dropped last Friday, produced by Unity Sound and Visual. Can you tell us about the clip?
Vents: It’s shot on the cheap, ie. for lolz. It wasn’t planned – there was no treatment or anything – we just took the camera out when we were bored and shot some stuff. We’ve been fucking around with it since around August. It’s the song I always wanted to do a video for but wasn’t really “single” material. The track’s pretty bleak and I wanted the clip to reflect that; it looks cheap and nasty and it’s black-and-white. We’re not servicing it to Video Hits or anything like that. It was a lot of fun to shoot and probably my favourite video we’ve done so far.

aahh: Last time we spoke to you, which was only a few months back you talked about a remix comp for the track Marked For Death. We personally heard some great remixes, did it take you a lot of time to go through all the entries?
Vents: I think we received close to 100 entries so yeah, but it listening to them all was a good time. Some were hilarious, some were just fucking horrible. But there was a lot of good ones and maybe 5-6 that I really, really liked and deciding on a winner was hard. I really liked Debates (Train of Thought) and we are working on a track together. Koolta’s was sick and I thought Matik’s was really good. Dave V’s remix was up there with one of the best easily. There was a few others that I really liked too but I can’t remember off my head; sorry. Also, Kast’s was dope. I got most of the guys from Golden Era to vote for their favourite and the winner was Methodz. Congratulations to Methodz; I haven’t had a chance to tell him personally yet but he absolutely fucking smashed it.

aahh: Are there any plans on releasing another single from the album in the future?
Vents:  I think ‘Every Day is a Blast’ and goes really well live might’ve been a good single but it’s a little late for that now, I think. Releasing a single takes time and money; two things we’re running pretty low on at the moment. We’re currently working on the next Golden Era mixtape and then plan to spend my time working on the next Vents album.

aahh: Final Comments and shit we’ve missed:
Vents: Cheers for the questions! Thanks to everyone who has supported us this year – it’s been a massive one for the whole Golden Era crew. And a way more eventful year for me than I ever expected. Much love to everyone who is repping us hard at the moment  - I really don’t deserve any of this shit and can’t thank you enough.

Katalyst – Deep Impressions [Out Today]

16 09 2011

Internationally renowned, ARIA nominated producer Katalyst returns with new album Deep Impressions, set for release today via Invada Records / Remote Control. The follow up album to his highly acclaimed 2007 album What’s Happening, a former triple j feature album, Deep Impressions is Katalyst’s third full length album and his most impressive work to date.

The latest product of his audiophiliac obsession, Deep Impressions deconstructs and distils soul, hip hop, funk, jazz, reggae and electro influences into what is perhaps most accurately described as “the Katalyst sound“. Deep Impressions is a reflection of the large variety tunes that influence Katalyst’s own musical direction. On the title of the album, Katalyst says, “Writing music for me is a continual process so when it came time to put the third Katalyst album together I looked at the songs I had written and recorded for the new release. As a body of work it was clear that many styles of music have made a deep impression on me as a producer. Hence the name of my album.”

On Deep Impressions, Katalyst collaborated with the likes of Los Angeles hip-hop artist Bootie Brown (of The Pharcyde), Sydney’s own KweenG (KillaQueenz), underground legend Mr Clean, and upcoming North Carolina MC Coin Locker Kid. Katalyst also teams up with long-term collaborators Stephanie McKay (USA), Steve Spacek (UK), Hau (Koolism), and Jade MacRae.

Katalyst is Sydney-based producer Ashley Anderson, one of Australia’s most prolific producers. Over the past two decades Katalyst has risen to the top of the Australian hip hop and electronica scenes, receiving multiple ARIA and J Award nominations along the way. His reputation as one of Australia’s best producers has seen him collaborate with the likes of Geoff Barrow of Portishead, Aloe Blacc, Dead Prez, Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, J-Live, Finale, Frank n Dank, Diverse, Ugly Duckling, and Steve Spacek (who together form Space Invadas). Katalyst has performed alongside The Roots, Jack Johnson, Jurassic 5, DJ Shadow, The Black Eyed Peas and Mix Master Mike and Ben Harper, and has also performed at Splendour In The Grass, Big Day Out, Homebake, The Falls Festivals, and Good Vibrations.
