M-Phazes The Vault

Mix and match the drums taken from any of these 15 songs to create your own bangers:

Aint Gonna Wait — Ed OG
Assassins — Pharoahe Monch ft. Jean Grae & Royce Da 5’9″
Back On The Scene — Slaughterhouse ft. Dres
Flying Through The City — Bliss N Eso
Good Morning — Drapht
The Hit Man — Pharoahe Monch
I Can — Bliss N Eso ft. Jehst

Whilst many other drum libraries contain hundreds upon hundreds of drum samples, M-Phazes has opted to avoid throwing a random bunch of drums sounds together in a zip folder and calling it a drum library. Instead he’s giving YOU quality over quantity with a package of professional sounds all normalised and featured on songs from some of the best artists in the world. Video filmed & edited by Nate Flagrant.

Bryte – Bryte Side Of Life

28 03 2013

Having hit the ground running in February with the title track, Bryte picks up the pace with the release of his sophomore album Bryte Side Of Life. Out through TOO SOLID Records/MGM Distribution on 5th April, not only is the LP inspiring and reflective but it’s got multi-level humour that will both amuse and shock.

BryteSideOfLife_Cover - WEB

Born and raised in Brisbane, now living in Perth, Bryte has been exposed to many different experiences, attitudes and ways of life from a young age. Fostered from his sick mother at just a few days old, there is no question that Bryte’s depth of understanding comes out in his music. His positive vision of hope crossed with his often harsh view of reality is found both in his lyrics and in the lines between, when what is not said is just as important as what is. Like so many who are drawn to Hip Hop, it’s all about keeping it real and for Bryte that is at the heart of everything he does.

Before the recording process started, feeling like a pivotal stage in his life was coming, Bryte stepped back to reflect and prepare his mindset for the task. He wanted to be sure that the final recording captured the messages he wanted to pass on; including his concerns about the world and common political issues. He also felt it was important that his quirky sense of humour, the down-to-earth and sometimes vulgar nature that Bryte is known to express through Hip Hop was instilled in the recording too.

“I want people to listen to this album and know who I am; a dedicated Indigenous artist, a teacher, a joker and most importantly a fellow human being” - Bryte

Working with ARIA Award winning producer Dazastah (Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, Phrase, Funkoars, Drapht) and engineer Rob Agostini (The Mummy 3, Tim & Jean, Yunyu, Blanche Dubois), Bryte felt strongly that the album should sound the best it could be, but was adamant that he stay true to his underground Hip Hop roots. Produced at Dazastah’s Lair in Perth over a 9 month period, the process also included several naked girls, large amounts of homemade pale ale and the ongoing lingering smell of spicy laksa farts.

On the lyrical tip, Bryte was joined by Dazastah, SBX songstress Porsah Laine for a number of tracks, as well as Cortext and Chekid who featured on Chainsaw Dick a song that brought them all to their knees in spasms of laughter. The first single and title track from the album Bryte Side Of Life talks about the importance of picking yourself up when you’re down in the dumps and remembering that no matter how bad things get, there’s always someone worse off than you.

Bryte38_web

World On Strike is a heavy hitting track that Bryte felt he needed to write to alert people about the injustices of the financial world, when laws seem to be passed to benefit those of wealth. Adding further fuel to the fire are the hefty guitar riffs by Rob Agostini and Desert Child’s Guy GhouseBrainwash touches on media mind control systems and their effect on today’s society. It also explores the idea that some wealthy and powerful figures have the ability to control our minds. Moving with a swing, it features vocal stylings from the amazing Porsah Laine.

The Squeeze highlights Bryte’s humour containing a detailed audio story of him ‘giving birth’ to his music career, introducing the next track Gotcha Goin’ Like a very catchy song that Bryte and Dazastah collaborated on to capture the humorous side of Hip Hop.‘Memory’ is dedicated to all the brains cells lost on Bryte’s quest to find out how wasted he could get and the harsh reality that follows smoking weed and drinking too much.

Although may be initially seen as derogatory, Big Bitches is a song paying homage to full figured woman and aiming to instil pride in ladies with voluptuous curves. Along a similar vein as Sir Mix-A-Lot’s hit song Baby Got Back, Bryte proudly tells of his love of larger ladies across suitably phat swinging bass lines. If you like hip hop with a bit of grunt, a few laughs and a whole lot of heart, all you really need to do is look on the Bryte side of life.

Citizen Kay Announces new single ‘Yes!’

12 03 2013

Originally born in Ghana, then moving to the Capital of Australia while still very young, Citizen Kay has grown up with an ambition to make his way into the music scene. Beginning as an aspiring songwriter with a love of hip-hop, he began rapping under the name ‘Kay‘.

citizen Kay Yes!

Not long after teaching himself how to rap, he decided to start teaching himself how to make beats and the art of recording. As time went on, Kay gained more experience making beats, finessing his rapping style and writing and recording his music. His reputation spread and before long he was working with other aspiring artists and musicians in the ACT. Music has been a big part in the life of Kay. Before becoming engrossed in hip-hop he was known as a guitarist and multi instrumentalist.

At the age of 14 his music teachers and peers recognized his potential as a musician, however hip-hop came into play in a big way and his love of rap and the recording of it took centre stage. Since 2008 Kay has become well known for rapping in the Capital. He has written, produced and recorded songs for himself and collaborated with many others, gaining a reputation as’ the go-to guy’ for other artists around town. He is also known for his collaborations with another ACT hip-hop artist, Meddskii.

Kay’s own output also kicked off, his 2nd mixtape featured a track called Villain by Verbal which he posted on his triple j Unearthed page. The Unearthed digital station picked up on it quickly with positive reviews. From that point on Kay moved forward as an artist, he changed his name to Citizen Kay with the notion of providing beats for a whole world of people. Citizen Kay is currently working on tracks for his debut EP and another mixtape.

One of the songs he wrote and recorded was Ansah Brothers featuring his younger brother, Genesis Owusu. After receiving attention from both triple j and triple j Unearthed for this track, Kay is set to release the first official single Yes! on March 22nd from his debut same-named EP due for release this April.

Citizen Kay has also just been announced as local support for Matt & Kim (USA) as they head out for their Groovin The Moo sideshows this May.

Bliss N Eso – House Of Dreams

5 03 2013

Live Nation and Niche Productions are proud to present, in association with American Hip-Hop legend Nas, the inaugural 2013 Australian Movement Festival. Filling the void of credible Hip-Hop events in Australia, the Movement Festival places Grammy award winning Hip Hop heavyweights, with mixtape kings and local heros in what’s destined to takeover as THE Hip Hop event each and every year in Australia.

bliss n eso house of dreams
Setting a new standard, Movement looks to the future of Hip Hop and Rap whilst still catering to a solid Hip-Hop foundation, thanks to the festival’s co-headliner and co-curator Nas. With more than 20 years in the business and often called the greatest rapper alive, Nas is an artist who needs little or no introduction.

Arguably Australia’s biggest Hip Hop group, Bliss N Eso wasted no time graduating from triple j airplay to racking up the spins on commercial networks. In 2006, Bliss N Eso’s second album, Day Of The Dog, was released and became the first Australian hip-hop release to debut in ARIA’s top 50. It also earned Bliss N Eso an ARIA nomination for Best Urban Release in 2006 with sales exceeding all benchmarks for a local hip-hop release. Bliss N Eso are crusaders in the fight against poverty, in 2007 the boys went on a Make Poverty History Zero Seven road trip tour and ventured on a journey with MTV and the Oaktree Foundation to some of the poorest regions in South Africa. Their third LP Flying Colours, broke records for an Australian hip-hop act. With a top 10 ARIA debut, the album became the highest selling local hip-hop album of the year and with their third nomination in as many years, Bliss N Eso took out the ARIA Award for 2008’s Best Urban Release.

In 2010 Bliss n Eso released their 4th Album Running On Air to critical acclaim, the album debuted at #1 on the ARIA charts and achieved gold sales within its first week. Known for their electrifying live shows Bliss N Eso currently hold the record for the biggest local hip-hop tour of all time from their 2011Australian tour, the Sydney trio are set to tear the roof off all Movement venues.

Joining Nas and Bliss N Eso is debatably one of the most heard voices in Rap in 2012: 2 Chainz. Another Def Jam signee, Chainz appeared on such massive tracks as Mercy (with Kanye West for Cruel Summer), Beez In The Trap (Nicki Minaj) and his own club hits Birthday Song and I Luv Dem Strippers. 2 Chainz has become a dominant force and somewhat the unofficial voice of Trap music.

Radio faves Chiddy Bang return to Australia after tearing up the Parklife circuit 2012. Flanked by certified radio and chart bangers like the ARIA chart top 10 and MGMT sampling Opposite Of Adults, Mind Your Manners or Ray Charles, Chiddy Bang bring an overwhelming party vibe to Movement’s lineup.

Also on the bill are mixtape King and Queen Joey Bada$$ and Angel Haze, who are poised to set the world on fire with their new albums in 2013. Bada$$ is known for his throwback style, leaning more on beats akin to A Tribe Called Quest than many of his contemporaries but still with a modern twist.

Rounding out the lineup are Spit Syndicate (Melb, Bris and Perth) and Thundamentals (Sydney only), two well respected local groups who epitmoise the direction in which Hip Hop is headed in Australia. Opening the day will be a triple j Unearthed Winner judged in each city by host of triple j Hip Hop Show host Hau Latukefu and the team at triple j, plus seamlessly segueing the live sets will be a host of each city’s best DJs. Taking the Hip Hop scene to exciting new heights Movement hits Australia late April, and promises to give audiences a quality event with this all star line-up of both local and international talent. Do not miss out on the Hip Hop event of 2013!

Tom Thum – Beating The Habit: Adelaide Fringe Festival 2013

23 02 2013

Beatbox addict and star of Tom Tom Crew, Tom Thum returns with his 2012 sell-out Fringe hit Beating The Habit. Winner Underbelly Edinburgh Award – Adelaide Fringe 2012. Since his award-winning debut at Adelaide Fringe last year, Thum has been invited to tours in London, Edinburgh, Brisbane, Germany, and Singapore and now he’s returning to Adelaide.

Beating The Habit

‘Artistry out of addiction’ Tom Thum attempts Beating The Habit that no amount of rehab can cure. Armed with a healthy dose of humour and charisma, Thum solo show is a sonic journey into the mind and overworked vocal chords of Australia’s most prolific beatboxer. An amusing and alarming story of the boy who developed a voice box with a mind of its own.

Packing an entire sound system into his throat, but with only a microphone in hand, Thum creates mind-blowing soundscapes of impossible beats, phenomenal sounds and a whole big-band’s worth of instruments. Tom Thum achieved international status early on; winning Beatboxing World Championships from Berlin to Cincinatti, fronting sold out shows spanning from London to New York’s Broadway; Montreal to Bogota and even sharing a stage with hip-hop legends such as Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash.

Winner of best noise and sound effects (2010) and Team Battle (2005) at the World Beatbox Convention (Berlin, Germany), Thum was Australia’s best beatboxer five years in a row at the Oz Hip Hop Awards. Cash Krzma – Excessive & Disgusting Degrees EP

8 02 2013

Cash Krzma’s has been deemed a lyricist to watch out for in 2013. By pure chance his debut single All Fonts was selected for Obesecity 2, and Cash was promptly offered distribution for his then unfinished debut EP. Collaborating with producers Neversaidall (DVS) and Able8 (Uncomfortable Beats) Cash Krzma brings you an original sound, heavily laced with self depreciating, comical braggadocio.

Cash-Krzma-Excessive-and-Disgusting-Degrees-Artwork

Expect a dose of strong, intelligent lyrics depicting life seen though the eyes of a semi – vagabond, twenty something social misfit. From Meanderings a ballad like depiction of the emcee’s journey thus far to Tumor Fists a brutal assault on commercial music. No topic is off limits: drugs, plastic surgery, social class structures, virgin alien births and Kyle Sandilands purple onion. Backed up from samples by Bukowski, eighties exploitation films and smooth beats, nothing outruns the razor sharp, lizard tongued wit of this versatile rapper. Cash Krzma – Excessive & Disgusting Degrees EP is available now.

With a follow up LP The Brinkman already half written, a national tour planned to coincide with it’s release, collaborations with Slack Jaw (Freos finest) for his mix tape Eat A Rat 4 and DCORP’s Cypher Session already under his belt you can guarantee this won’t be the last you hear of this Emcee.
