Wide Open Road at SXSW

12 03 2013

As premium festival producers, BDO Presents and C3 Presents in association with Sounds Australia and the Screen Producers Association of Australia are here to motivate the next level of show, stage and digital design; to help break the down the fourth wall between artists and audience.

Wide-open-road-promo1

Motivated by recent work such Tupac hologram, Coldplay LED wrist bands and historically Roger Waters ‘The Wall’ we are capitalising on the 3 separate weeks of Film, Interactive and Music conferences at SXSW to present the inaugural Wide Open Road and the The Big Day Out Evolution Grant.

The Big Day Out Evolution Grant will be awarded to collective groups who combine film making, digital interactive and music production to create a new annual innovation, invention or theatrical event. Executive Director, Matthew Deaner of SPAA says “SPAA is delighted to be partnering with Sounds Australia and the Big Day Out on this event at SXSW. This initiative encourages creative collaboration between Australian independent producers and content creators of film, interactive media and music and it provides an opportunity for these creative industries to work together on a project that engages and excites audiences in a way they have never experienced before.”

“Australia is a large country and full of people with amazing and progressive ideas. SXSW creates an event each year that attracts a lot of these minds into one city. Our hope is that Wide Open Road will bring creatives from all across Australia together in one room and that it becomes an incubator for new fresh and progressive collaborations across all 3 mediums.” Millie Millgate, Sounds Australia

Introducing: THE BIG DAY OUT EVOLUTION GRANT
A $20,000 Development Grant for innovations and invention using interactive, film and production in the advancement of the live music experience.

“We are at an important live production crossroads. Advances in multimedia production are enabling live performances to bring all of the power of film making to the stage, from projection, to lighting to even 3D. Advances in audience engagement, encompassing feedback, physical tracking, mobile technology, and social media have the potential to bring the audience into an artists stage show in ways that we can only imagine.” Adam Zammit, CEO, Big Day Out

Traditional show design has worked in a single direction; from artist to audience; The audience to artist connection has been limited; applause, or vocalisation. Most modern technology usage, for example Coldplay’s recent shows with LED stage is limited to one direction. The Big Day Out Evolution Grant is designed to encourage collaborations that produce innovations that create a robust feedback loop encompassing the artist and the audience, that has the potential to bring the person the furthest from the stage right onto it.

It is time for forward thinking production and show designers to work with the leading interactive producers to take advantage of the potential of this feedback loop. It is time to create storyfied content, to produce interactive film, video, holograph and light shows that go beyond displaying a twitter feed on a screen. It is time to listen to the audience do more than scream out ‘one more’. It is time reach out across the pit and bring the audience into the show.

Wide Open Road at SXSW 2013. Tuesday March 12, at Holy Mountain – 617 E 7th St Austin. Featuring live performance by 360.

Childish Gambino – BDO Side Shows

20 11 2012

With a unique blend of hip-hop spanning multiple genres, combined with a lyrical genius, Childish Gambino has gone from a viral cult following to a mega sensation. This summer the wunderkind makes his Australian debut when he plays Big Day Out.

Childish Gambino is the triple threat of entertainment – actor, writer and rapper – who “just oozes with talent” (Consequence Of Sound). Born Donald Glover, he raps and performs under the persona of Childish Gambino, a name created randomly via an online Wu-Tang Clan name generator. He doesn’t exactly have the stereotypical hip-hop backstory as he originally started off selling laughs as a writer for the NBC comedy hit show 30 Rock. His acting career blew up next and his role as Troy on the current NBC comedy Community, drew accolades. “I knew that because of 30 Rock and Community, people will find out I’m a comedian before they know I do music,” says Childish Gambino. “But I’ve been doing music long before any of that.

Childish Gambino has emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in music with the video for his track Freaks and Geeks hitting over 10 million YouTube views. He’s been famed for rhyming over indie grooves such as the likes of Animal Collective, Sleigh Bells, Grizzly Bear, Vampire Weekend, and Sufjan Stevens and other times, Childish Gambino just dazzles with insane, complex pop-culture references.

Not one to be pigeonholed, he recently released his latest mixtape Royalty featuring collaborations with Beck, Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA and Ghostface Killah and 30 Rock star and comedian Tina Fey. Live Childish Gambino is backed by arrangements that span indie-rock toddle, lowrider-shaking hip-hop grind, and doo-wop all showcasing his fiercely clever flow. Bear witness to rap marvel Childish Gambino and his explosive live show that will be the talk of the town. These shows are your only chance to see Childish Gambino outside of Big Day Out 2013. Tickets on sale 9am Thursday November 22 here

You can pick up Childish Gambino’s latest mixtape ROYALTY here.

Vents Rollin’ Balls Tour

6 06 2011

The wait is finally over with the arrival of Vents new album Marked For Death and fresh tour dates announced this week for SA and VIC – see details below:

An imposing live performer Vents has toured nationally with Funkoars, and most recently Hilltop Hoods. In 2007 Vents enjoyed a level of mainstream success with his debut album Hard To Kill. The track Love Song was picked up by Triple j and in the following years he toured extensively, playing festivals such as Big Day Out, Homebake, Summadayze, One Movement and Groove is in the Park. May 13th this year saw Vents release his sophomore album Marked For Death, once again enlisting Trials of the Funkoars to handle production duties. Trials has recently experienced a huge amount of success behind the boards – producing Drapht’s platinum single Rapunzel and working with Ash Grunwald, Hilltop Hoods, Abbe May as well as countless others. Gifted newcomer, ADFU comes on board to complete the team. Label mates Sesta & Hilltop Hoods add guest vocals to the album supplying another dimension to the project. Since releasing Hard To Kill in 2007, a loyal following has eagerly anticipated his next release. An extended hiatus hasn’t tarnished Vents’ standing with Hip Hop fans; in fact it’s fed the anticipation. Four years on, Marked For Death serves at the big brother to his debut release, with a more mature, introspective, sometimes cynical but always honest view of the world, that is both unique and entirely relatable.  The first single History Of The World has garnered airplay across the country with support on both independent radio and national broadcaster Triple j, heralding exciting times ahead for Vents in 2011.
