Fraksha – My Way

11 10 2012

Earning his stripes in the UK’s underground live circuit, Fraksha has proven himself to be one of the UK’s finest MC’s. Having shared the stage with artists like Skinnyman, Kano, Klashnekoff & Blak Twang as a founding member of the UK outfit Nine High, Fraksha spent time honing his craft and sold out two mixtapes, a testament to his tenure in the UK scene.

Opting to move to the greener pastures of Australia in 2006, after a previous visit in 2002/03, Fraksha hit the ground running, joining Aria Award winning Bliss N Eso on their sold out Get Loose tour, giving Fraksha the opportunity to slide into the Australian Hip Hop scene with ease. With the love received on the Get Loose tour, Fraksha re-pressed his Take Two (Nine High) mixtape which received rave reviews and sold out within just a few months of release.

Since his 2006 arrival into Australia, Fraksha has shown his versatility, being regularly booked to perform at cross-genre events (Void in Sydney, Rukus in Brisbane, Too Much and Heavy Innit in Melbourne, resident at Wobble 2008-12) displaying his unique UK flow and demonstrating his refusal to be boxed in to any one genre. From drum n bass, to grime, to dancehall to dubstep and anything in between  you name it, he can rap on it and well. As an in-demand mc for events throughout the country, Fraksha is considered one of the top Grime/dub-step MC’s in Australia.

With a critically acclaimed self titled debut album with Nine High (released July 2009) under his belt and collaborations with notable Australian artists such as Reason, Ciecmate, Tornts, Kerser, Choose Mics, M-Phazes, Sky’High & That’s Them, as well as contributing one of the highlight tracks to M-Phazes Aria winning Good Gracious (‘That’s What We On‘) album and performing on the subsequent national tour, Fraksha is now a well known and widely respected MC in the Australian scene.

Most recently, Fraksha has released his first solo offering It’s Just Bars, the first official grime release to come out of Australia. It’s Just Bars, mixed by DJ Affiks and featuring production from M-Phazes (M.O.P, Pharoahe Monch), Loco (Joe Budden, Miss Dynamite), Juzlo, Youthful Implants, has received great reviews throughout the country and the first single Next Sound Level has since been remixed by Loco, MatCant (Scattermish) and renowned dub-step producer Spherix. The mix-tape went on to win mix-tape of the year 2010 in the annual ozhiphop.com awards. With his fingers in many pies 2010 also saw Fraksha commence presenting The Sunday Roast show on Kiss FM in Melbourne, Australia’s only purely grime radio show!

2010 also saw Fraksha coming together with fellow MC’s Diem (Hospice Crew), Scotty Hinds (Nine High) and Murky Depths to start Australia’s first grime crew; Smash Brothers. Noted for their high energy live shows and regular radio appearances, Smash Brothers are THE crew to watch. Having received coverage on grimeforum and recording a one off set for them, they were personally asked by legendary grime producer Dexplicit to record the official Australian vocal of Pull Up Dat 2011.

No stranger to airports, 2011 saw Fraksha being booked to undertake a short tour of New Zealand alongside Dizzee Rascal, Dead Prez and more. This Kiwi connection also spawned a massive remix of Next Sound Level by New Zealand dub-step royalty Optimus Gryme and further work with the highly respected Bulletproof who collaborated on the Sky’High and Smash Brothers track and video Reign. In 2011 Fraksha also collaborated with the production duo Karton, providing the vocals on the explosive first single and video Bang from their well received album Find The Constant.

While continually tearing up shows Smash Brothers kicked off 2012 with a bang dropping video’s for the incendiary Gangsta, produced by dub-step kingpin Filth Collins, Loco produced Areyouf***ingmad and the fan favourite from Fraksha & Diem Crepes. Continually pushing and spearheading the grime sound in Australia this year also saw Fraksha team up with Affiks and Arctic to start the grime night 50/50 bringing to Melbourne grime heavyweights such as Teddy, Rude Kid and Swindle. Not one to rest on his laurels through the Winter months, Fraksha has been hard at work in the studio and 2013 will see him proudly release his debut solo album through Broken Tooth Entertainment.

For those in the know, it is no earth shattering news that Fraksha has now signed to release his next album, My Way, on Broken Tooth Entertainment. Fraksha has been kicking around the scene for years doing his thing and always staying mad prolific. In recent years, his work with Smash Brothers has garnered a great deal of attention alongside Scotty Hinds, Murkey Depths, and the one and only Diem.

Fraksha – My Way drops March 1, 2013 through Broken Tooth Entertainment.

Death Stars 2011 Wrap Up

16 01 2012

Death Stars are Syntax & Mules. 2011 saw the release of a self titled 7 track EP. VHS funk for Star Wars gangsters and Home Alone homies. With samples crafted entirely out of old school movie scores, and raps ranging from George Lucas-inspired metaphors to full blown misogyny, this is an interesting listen to say the least.

Death Stars wasn’t an official Soulmate Records project, but one that filled all our hearts with joy. Syntax of course dropped The Musical on Soulmate in 2010 and is a member of In Good Company, who released a self-titled LP last year. Mules the beat maker behind this wonderful project is a member of Gold Coast’s Choose Mics and has been working hard on a variety of projects, keep an eye out in 2012. The Death Stars were special guests at IGC and Eloquor’s album launch late last year. An official film clip was also released for the title track, which you can check out here.  We hope to see a follow up to the Death Stars EP very soon.

Syntax & Mules – Death Stars (July 15)

11 07 2011

Bad, Meet Evil Streetwear announces the release of Death Stars, the free EP from Soulmate Records artist Syntax, and Gold Coast hip hop producer Mules. The first single Death Stars is now available online below:

Death Stars
is a throwback to colourful video stores, puffy VHS jackets, and pays homage to cinema’s greatest movie composers with slick samples, inventive pop culture infused lyrics, and a masterful overtone of well crafted production. It’s a seven track EP that is dynamism personified; an ensemble of razor edged wit, served alongside heeded warnings of not feeding the Mogwai after midnight, and shrilled screaming from muscled Austrian’s about getting to the chopper.

Both artists are no strangers to the aura of success; Syntax’s 2010 debut The Musical was credited with a whole swag of four and five star reviews (definitely one of our favourite releases from 2010), and branded the Gold Coast turned Melbourne rapper with a positive stigma as one of Australia’s most notable rap vocalists. As a music man, Mules is well versed in the trade of effortless production. As one half of the duo Choose Mics, his music has earned him production credits among Australia’s most prolific artists, and critical acclaim as the producer for the international collaboration project Raw with US artist Quite Nyce.

Every song on Death Stars features a prominent sample from a Hollywood film score, effortlessly looped and pushed through the Death Stars razzle dazzle filter; the ultimate synthesis of rap and nerdish fixations for the local video store. Death Stars will be available for free download from July 15, 2011 at the official Death Stars/Bad, Meet Evil website www.deflectorshields.com

Can You Dig It? In Good Company, Matte Blac, T-Bar & more!

7 06 2011

Head on down to The Workers Club for Can You Dig It? Hip Hop Showcase in Melbourne this Thursday night. Featuring: In Good Company (Whisper. Syntax, Breach), Matte Blac, Vintage Seed & T-Bar. This is going to be a massive night, so head down for some of the freshest hip hop in Melbourne.

In Good Company
Bluntly, each an accomplished recording artist in their own right, four Melbourne musicians have joined forces to create a free downloadable album for a clambering fast paced audience that is slowly becoming apathetic to the notion of the local music industry. Each with years of industry experience behind them, In Good Company sets the benchmark for wide reaching collaboration projects for the next generation of budding young musicians. And so welcome Whisper, who alongside Obese Records signee Mantra reigned supreme in the Melbourne live circuit as the hip hop duo Equills. Whisper recently smashed his way back onto the local scene with Stand Up, the highly charged M-Phazes produced single from his forthcoming debut album; a single that clocked up an impressive two thousand youtube spins in its first week of release. Also welcome A-Diction, who after collaborating with some of the most prolific producers in the Australian hip hop industry who dropped their long awaited album Walking Alone, an album that is testament to the tried and true notion that the best things in life take a little extra time. Individually they are Boltz and Breach; Boltz, the charismatic crooner who is well known for his Soulmate Records release The Wishlist, and Breach, the punchline fuelled fury that brightens up any room like a blast of audible fresh air. Lastly welcome Syntax, one third of the celebrated QLD hip hop group Trace Elements, the group that spawned one of this country’s most notable producers; M-Phazes. With ten years of industry experience, over 30,000 downloads, and a fierce live reputation, Syntax simply adds fuel to the already stocked burning furnace that is In Good Company. His debut album The Musical available from Soulmate Records was highly noted, Syntax is one talented mother fucker. Stay tuned for his upcoming Death Stars release with Mules of Choose Mics fame.Together the four musicians have created a bond that is reminiscent of some of the most note worthy groups in hip hop history, and featuring a stellar production line up consisting of M-Phazes, Mules (Choose Mics, Hyjak & Torcha), Ciecmate, J Squared, Lewis One, ATP (Beatkamp Muzik) and Whisper, In Good Company will do more than wet the whistles of the eager hip hop loving market, it will forge itself as the standard for all collaborative projects for years to come.

 Matte Blac
An MC with a passion for dynamic wordplay and sweet rhythms is set to release his solo mixtape, The Colour Of Sound. For his keen sense of social trends and world events, Matte is one who understands great lyrics, no backpedaling into tired metaphores each rhyme makes you think just hard as the previous. Each and every line delivered has been painstakingly brought to perfection of recording and re-recording and even rewrting in the studio, this is nothing short of special. Matte is one half of well known Burn City crew Mixed Alliance who recently released they’re mixtape Mixed Business.

T-Bar
As a born story-teller, it’s no surprise that Melbourne MC, T-Bar, loves the world of aussie hip hop. While he wouldn’t mind a slice of the money, fame and attention that so many of today’s artists crave, T-Bar’s main aim is to change people’s perception of what hip hop actually is. “There are just way too many people out there who presume rappers are violent, cocky, misogynistic troublemakers. Some don’t even know hip hop exists in Australia and I feel like it’s about time that artists like Urthboy, the Tongue, Pez, Joelistics, Solo and Seth Sentry started getting recognised as the incredible talents that they are by people outside of the hip hop community” T-Bar says.

According to T-Bar “writing lyrics started as a hobby…my best mates, Matte Blac and Paddy G from Mixed Alliance, were writing and performing these funky tracks at shows and my girlfriend, Kimberley Smith, is a trained singer with such an incredible voice”. Being surrounded by so much talent inspired T to pick up a pad and pen and begin writing rhymes. Before long T-Bar was writing, recording and performing fully formed tracks filled with his personal views regarding money, politics, social trends and modern life. T-Bar has one more track to record from his debut, soon-to-be-released Piece of Mind Mixtape. The release has 12 infectious tracks sure to get your head nodding, feet moving, and maybe even your voice singing. To give you a taste of what’s to come, take some time to listen to one of his favorite tracks Tick Tock and be on the lookout for the Piece of Mind Mixtape, dropping real soon.

Vegas Aces – Interview: Gambling, Gear & Generics

3 05 2011

aahh: The history between Vegas Aces goes way back to the days when Cam was working with Publik Relationz and you (4th) were apart of Pure Product, are we right?
4th: Yeah, I started sourcing beats for the Pure Product album and got put in touch with Cam through Mr Hill and Seven (Publik Relationz) and was just blown away at his beats, even back then. At the time I think he was just 18 and had only just started making beats, so I knew he was going to be someone to watch out for.

aahh: Fast forward to 2011. We now have the Vegas Aces partnership in full swing. Tell us a little about the new EP VA All Day?
4th: The EP really just started out us making a couple of songs and seeing how they turned out – which were Boomtown Shuffle and Two Sides. We really liked the sound that was coming out so we decided to do a whole thing. Originally we were just gonna make a few songs and chuck them out for free but as we made more, some friends of ours egged us on to release it properly.

aahh: Vegas Aces is an interesting name, are you both massive gamblers or does it go a little deeper than that?
4th: Haha not at all! No gambling here – it was more so at the time there were a lot of those sorts of references in what we were doing. And the fact that we were in the same circle it was sort of ‘shuffling of the deck’ to be super-corny for us to work together. To be even more corny, it’s also a nod to Bris-Vegas. Corn.

aahh: How long how you guys been working on the VA All Day material for this EP?
4th: The actual music didn’t take that long at all. Everything on there was the culmination of Cam sending me a beat and immediately I knew what it was going to be about and wrote it in a couple of hours. If it didn’t work like that – it’s not on there. All the other behind-the-scenes shit is what took the most time. I’m pretty picky so there was a lot of back and forth tweaking etc. Sorry guys!

aahh: The depth of this EP is impressive, Are you guys strong believers in the old adage of quality over quantity?
4th: Without a mother-effing doubt! We really wanted to put out something really solid to make a good first impression. Because obviously we were a ‘new’ group we had to start from scratch again and really turn some heads to get the name out there. There are so many great acts these days you need to bring something special to the table to stand out.

aahh: What have been the some of main challenges you’ve faced in bringing this release to the people?
4th: The generic ‘being-on-a-small-label-and-lacking-a-big-budget’ one is pretty obvious as a factor. I don’t think being in Brisbane geographically is a hurdle in getting our music around the country though, for most part the scene here has been really supportive. I dunno, maybe because we started from scratch as a new group was our biggest hurdle? Hurdles have also been a pretty big hurdle.

aahh: A lot of artists talk about their influences and how it shaped their musical development. With such diverse backgrounds what were some of your early influences?
4th: I can safely say my influences now are pretty different to when I was starting out, but with that said, those early influences were very important! A few years ago I was pretty anti-mainstream which I’m sure every teenager goes through. My biggest influences overseas were probably early Eminem, Apathy, Copywrite… shit there is seriously too many to name, now I am really into Jay-Z/J. Cole, Evidence and Fashawn are getting a thrashing too, again though – waaaaaay too many to name! Locally though the biggest were Lyrical Commission, Left One, Lazy Grey + 750 and co, they made me wanna do it.

aahh: What do you think the most important aspects are to consider when constructing a track lyrically for your audience?
4th: That they can understand it and can picture what I’m saying. I find myself doing that when I write now. I more want to write shit that someone can relate to as oppose to having the most technical verse now.

aahh: For the gear geeks out there, what kind of equipment set up do you have?
Cam Bluff: Im currently rocking my good old mpc200xl along with a m-audio key rig 49. Primarily i did start making beats on my mpc, however nowadays as i branch off into larger compositions i rely on my mpc as more as a midi controller than a beat machine. Accompanying my mpc and keyrig are also a m-audio profire 610 audio interface, a pair of behringer truths, a pair of stanton T.150′s and a 27” IMAC. I use Native Instruments complete 7 which is fantastic for laying down vintage or orchestral sounds. Keys, organs, retro 70/80′s synths you name it this package packs a punch. Its pricy though it pays off.

aahh: We’ve heard you’ve already started work on the full LP. Is it true that Cam has sent you a pile of beats but only one has made the cut so far. Has that been the general way you guys work together?
4th: Yeah I can be pretty notoriously picky with music. Lucky Cam is a fucking incredible talent and we are on the same page. There are actually a few beats that are definite now. Pretty much if I don’t love a beat and have a feel for what the song is going to be about straight away, then it most likely wont get used.

aahh: Can you give us a little insight on how the album will compare to the EP?
4th: In the early stages its more musical I suppose, Cam’s production is definitely moving forward in this way. Fundamentally I suppose it will be similar to the EP but I guess just ‘bigger better more’ (yo Opees!). We know what we want to do with it for this release, which I guess is a good thing.

aahh: How far into the album are you and will we see a 2011 release?
Cam Bluff: We have a few songs written and roughly recorded and a few more beats picked out. And yes we are aiming for a late 2011 release.

aahh: With the recent floods and cyclones to hit QLD, there have been numerous benefit gigs and money-raising efforts. Vegas Aces were involved in a Rap Relief track. Tell us a little bit about the track and how these disasters have affected you on a personal level and as a member of the community?
4th: That track came together through Chris at Soulmate Records and mutual friends Choose Mics, Seven and Syntax. I dunno? I kind of just jumped on board, Cam was making a beat with the same sample which was meant to switch up or be a remix but didn’t end up happening in time. Then Tom wrote and recorded the chorus after I recorded my verse and that was that really. I wasn’t affected directly by the floods but I know people who were and it was fucking horrible. As horrible as it was, it also showed how altruistic we can be as a city/country with all the donations and charity gigs and that was brilliant! The whole world seems to be getting reamed at the moment thought… shit is hectic.

aahh: What’s 2011 hold in store both as separate artists and for Vegas Aces?
4th: As Vegas Aces we are aiming to have the album out late this year. We want to tour. Tour. And tour again. Basically just stay building and making music. Hopefully I will getting up and finishing the Pure Product album.
Cam Bluff: Damn so far 2011 has kept me busy. Along with the VA album i will be reconnecting with Spit Syndicate on their next release. I have another project im working on with Syntax. We’ve pretty much chosen all the beats and we are looking at a late 2011 release.

Rap Relief – Together (QLD Hip Hop Artists For Flood Relief)

3 02 2011

Queensland hip-hop talents Seven (Triple J Unearthed winner), Syntax, Vegas Aces, Choose Mics and Tommy Ill have joined forces to record a new charity single, Together, to support communities ravaged by devastating floods throughout the state. The track, recorded under the moniker of Rap Relief, is now available for download from www.raprelief.com for a charitable donation of AU$2.00.

All proceeds from sales of Together will be donated directly to the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal http://www.qld.gov.au/floods/donate.html, a fund set up to rebuild Queensland communities affected by the recent floods. Track producer Simon Mula (of Choose Mics) said all of the artists involved jumped at the chance to lend a hand to the flood relief effort.
“In a crisis like this, it’s important that everyone gets in and lends a hand in their own unique way – whether that’s with a shovel, a mop or a microphone. Hopefully we’ve made a quality hip-hop track that people will enjoy enough to purchase, so that we can raise a bit of money to help get our fellow Queenslanders back on their feet.”
