Illy – The Chase [Out Now]

29 10 2010

Melbourne MC Illy returns with a stunning second album, The Chase. Fuelled by the blazing first single It Can Wait feat. Owl Eyes (#3, #4 most played on Triple J through the first two weeks of October 2010 and added to NOVA nights nationally and across the board in Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane), the album is the addiction to desire- the moments that define all the emotion and uncertainty of the pursuit of happiness.

Buoyed by an incredible palette of infectious production, The Chase is filled with soaring melodies (M-Phazes work on Cigarettes), hard hitting flow (We Don’t Care) and unmistakable chart topping appeal (Jan Skubiszewski with It Can Wait). The issues covered through the tracks are as diverse as Illy’s global outlook- from the ups and downs, to personal gain and wealth, to growing up in today’s ever changing world; it is about never standing still.

In Diamonds feat. Wren, Illy demonstrates a refined maturation in songwriting, trading right hook beats and rhymes for down beat melodies and quiet introspection. Cigarettes feat. Hue Blanes is the amalgamation of near-perfect pop sensibilities with piano-tuned production and hip hop attitude; taking flight with Illy’s stream of consciousness raps and Hue Blanes’ (of The Melodics) sweeping vocal hook.

Amongst the flourish of great rhymes, catchy beats and melodies, there rests the staple party tracks (Put Em In The Air) and hip hop anthems (Guess I Could), but it is the soul and substance of the album as a whole that will leave a lasting picture on those listening. This is the new addiction, the reality of right now, welcome to The Chase.

Illy – The Chase – 14 Tracks In 14 Days [Day 8]

22 10 2010

The anticipation for Illy’s second album, The Chase, continues to grow with the announcement that Triple J has selected it as next week’s Feature Album. Tune in to Triple J all week for your chance to hear more from The Chase! The album’s first single, It Can Wait (feat. Owl Eyes), was the 3rd and 4th most played track on Triple J for the last two weeks respectively. The single has also gained across the board NOVA adds through the country, including Nova 969 (Sydney), Nova 919 (Adelaide), Nova 1069 (Brisbane) along with night time rotation nationally. Expect a brand new music video for the single to hit the airwaves very soon. Illy has also been added to this year’s Pyramid Rock Festival, bringing in the New Year alongside an already illustrious roster of artists both national and international.

In the lead up to the release of his anticipated second album The Chase, Melbourne MC Illy has launched ‘14 Tracks in 14 Days’. What is 14 Tracks in 14 Days you ask? Commencing last Friday the 15th of October.Illy will be uploading 1 track per day off his new album The Chase for streaming via his official website www.illyal.com

Each track will be accompanied by a detailed description of the song, sharing exclusive details like the meanings behind the songs through to the recording process. This is intended to give fans not only an in-depth insight into the album, but also an idea of the overall flow of the record.  Below you can find out what Illy had to say about Day 8′s track Numbers Game. You can check the track out here.

Day 8 – Track: ‘Numbers Game’
I got this instrumental off Skub the week before I left for South America over Christmas/New Years (almost every dollar I make goes to travelling – I’m committed to having a completely filled out passport by the time it expires in 2014). I had originally planned, and written to it, as a sort of travel song. It was cool, but although the beats got a lot of positivity to it, it’s also got a lot of room to talk about deeper shit. So I completely rewrote the verses in May or June, with a different theme and massively different flow.
A very broad inspiration behind the style of Numbers Game is in the way an old person talks to a young person about events in the past, that you weren’t there to see yourself. Their recollections usually skewed by personal opinions, like it’s not just the facts, its a story. I tried to use that style of story telling. The song’s basically me talking to a kid in the future, about how we were (are) in a bad way as a planet. I like to think that sooner or later we will reach the tipping point and stand up to this mess, so I wrote about overcoming the odds we’re currently faced with. I’m not normal a fan of autotune, but I think we pulled it off alright here.

Day 7 – Track: ‘We Don’t Care’
Another Ta-Ku beat, this was the first track I finished writing for the album. Ta-Ku sent a beat, and the loop that makes up this track was a small part of it, maybe 8 bars of an entirely different song. I can’t remember the rest of the beat but this section stuck out, so I got him to build the beat around this loop.

The idea behind the track has to do with responding to a lot of the criticism that’s been directed my way since LSS dropped. It amazes me that people go to the efforts they do with it. I’m all for honest opinions, there’s nothing worse than yes-men, but I cant stand it when it crosses the line into flat out hating for the sake of it.
The third verse talks about my record label, Obese, and a lot of the gossip that was flying around in 2009. After a few of the big names moved on from the label, a lot of people who knew nothing about the situation took it upon themselves to label Obese a sinking ship. I wanted to address that, because what Obese has done for the scene is beyond argument. Almost every local hip-hop artist I look up to has at one point or another been on Obese, and with M-Phazes, SS, Mantra, Skryptcha and now myself dropping in the same year, its not exactly a barren spell.

Day 6 – Track: ‘Without A Doubt’
This song is another pretty straightforward jam. The beat had been sitting in his catalogue for a minute, so I picked it up pretty much as soon as I came back from South America. I had already had a few beats that I had on hold taken, so I knew it was going to get snapped up any day if I didn’t fork out for it. I bought it just before us and the BBS boys went out on the Pictures tour.

We sorta came to the conclusion that I had this beat, and had this tour, so we should throw it into the set.I’m never entirely comfortable with playing new stuff (I don’t have the ability to make songs that stick instantly, a lot of it takes a while to warm to) so I wanted to make the hook something that would go down well from the first listen.

I think we spent the first few shows of tour fucking up that song because I finished it like the week before tour started, but once we got the rhythm to it it worked perfectly. Again, it’s another undeniable beat, and its great to see people getting right into it when they can’t have heard the song more than once or twice at previous shows.

Day 5 – Track: ‘Cigarettes’

Phazes first showed me this beat at the Bunbury Groovin The Moo. We’d been touring flat out for about 2 months up till this show, and this was the last big show we played together, so it was a kind of bittersweet thing. Phizzle, Cam (my drummer – HandiCam, Cameroon, Camdle, Camoron) and myself were in our room, and Phazes chucked that beat on. I lost my shit straight away.

It’s not a typical hip-hop sounding beat, which I loved from first listen. It’s got an almost pop feel, but those drums dirty the whole feel of the track up perfectly. I took a bit of inspiration from the movie The Wrestler, in that the song is about someone who falls from grace, and as crazy and futile as it might be, cant let go of their dream, whatever the consequences are as a result. The beat was originally a much more down-tempo track, and the original verses reflected that – there was a sense of hopelessness, where matey’s stuck in a downward spiral he’ll never get out of.

I’d planned on having a female vocal for the hook, but after the beat got changed, a chick wouldn’t have suited. Hue was my first choice male vocal for the hook; I knew him through his band The Melodics, he’s got a really unique voice, and it suited the track perfectly. He came in at 10am on a Monday session, and was out by midday with the hook bodied.
