Phrase – Apart

1 08 2011

It’s customary for an artist on the promo trail to talk up (or big note) how progressive their new album is. But in the two years since Clockwork floored the hip-hop world, Phrase — aka Melbourne MC Harley Webster — has completely ripped up his past by the roots. Babylon, his third album, throws down the gauntlet to any musician feeling hemmed in by a scene and longing to paint a bigger picture.

The first single, Apart, sets the stage for Babylon, as a garage stomper with guitar twists and a chorus sung by You Am I’s Davey Lane — which laments a chaotic, hungover relationship. Rest assured, Babylon retains Phrase’s trademark acerbic insights. While he’s drawn on some vintage genres when structuring the songs, on the verses he’s re-imagined the vocalist as rapper back in the day, emerging with a flawlessly blended sound that’s startlingly unique. Artfully designed to jack up your adrenalin, these tracks hum with tremolo guitar, Farfisa and Hammond lines.

The choruses (so epic they must be carved into the side of a mountain somewhere) feature gutsy vocals from an unlikely crew of special guests — and Harley singing, for the first time, himself. We hope you enjoy Phrase’s latest music video for Apart feat. Davey Lane! Make sure you check out the behind the scenes video too for a few laughs! Babylon will be available 12th of August, 2011.

“To me, ‘Babylon’ means a place of beauty and getting to a better point in life. That’s what the record represents,” offers Phrase of his upcoming album, which will include an eclectic cast of guests spanning Jimmy Barnes to Sparkadia’s Alex Burnett.

Phrase Writes 3rd Album – New Single “Never Fade”

4 11 2010

It’s been an amazing year for Phrase since the release of his critically acclaimed album Clockwork on 24th April, 2009. This past year has seen Phrase nominated for both an Aria & J Award, rocking sold out shows all over the country, smashing almost every major festival you can think of (Big Day Out, Homebake, Sounds of Spring etc) and collaborating with some of the most outstanding artists Australia has to offer (Wendy Matthews, Kram, Ian Kenny, Daniel Merriweather). Phrase’s Clockwork was a groundbreaking record for Australian Hip-Hop and was praised for its cross genre sound and risk taking, earning it 5 star reviews across the country.

Now with almost 100 shows (in just 12 months) in the can, 6 music videos, 1 incredible album cycle completed, it’s time for Phrase to batten down the hatches and begin working on his next album. In Phrase’s own words “I will be producing the bulk of the record myself and I plan on picking up where Spaceship left off. I’m taking a different approach to this album with no samples this time, it will just be whatever is in my head. I usually drink too much wine and don’t get enough sleep when I write so hopefully I will see u on the other side later this year! If not please play Right Said Fred “I’m Too Sexyat my funeral and bury me like a legend.

Phrase will be performing a select few shows throughout the country between now and the release of his new album, so until then, keep your eyes open and your ears peeled for the next installment from Melbourne city’s finest, Phrase.

Never Fade marks Phrase’s return to the radio waves to give listeners an in-sight into what promises to be the boldest Phrase album yet. Written and produced entirely by Phrase in his Prahran home studio, Never Fade tells the care free tale of the “live fast, die young” code that so many young Australian’s abide by. With a catchy chorus sung by Phrase himself, Never Fade is the perfect song to kick-start the summer!

To celebrate the release of his new single, Phrase will be performing select shows in WA only as part of his “Never Fade” tour:

25 Nov 2010 Rocket Room, Perth
26 Nov 2010 Players Bar, Mandurah
27 Nov 2010 Royal Palms Resort, Busselton
08 Nov 2010 Newport, Fremantle
** More shows to be announced shortly.

phrase clockwork all aussie hip hop

The next round of nominees for this year’s J Award (Triple J’s annual celebration of the best Australian albums of the year) have been announced. Emcee Phrase for his album Clockwork has been among the nominees put up this round. As we know Phrase’s album Clockwork sat tucked away on a shelf for many months due to the fact that no one wanted to release it. After hearing any one of the tracks on this solid album, you quickly realise that the labels involved must have seriously slept on this release.

So everyone here at allaussie hip hop would like to congratulate Phrase on his nomination and his masterpiece that is the album Clockwork.

You can check out the full write up at the Triple J Home and Hosed website here.

Hilltop Hoods – State Of The Art has already been nominated in a previous round. With a lot of quality aussie hip hop releases this year, will we see any other artists nominated?!

PHRASE – CLOCKWORK

10 06 2009

Phrase - Clockwork

That’s right peeps, its been almost 4 years since his critically acclaimed debut album Talk With Force was unleashed on the world.  Last month Phrase, returned with his long-awaited and highly anticipated sophomore release, Clockwork”. Featuring guest performances from Wendy Matthews, Jackson Jackson, Bliss N Eso, Daniel Merriweather, Kram, Illy and Max White, Clockwork is without a doubt one of the boldest releases to emerge this year. Debuting in the top 30  CLOCKWORK is already making waves throughout the country! You can grab a free Mp3 download of Clockwork the track via Phrase’s Website.

Below is a little extract from lostateminor.com by Casper Johansson.

“We asked him to give us the inside story on how the album artwork was put together: ‘When I had first finished the record, I wasn’t sure what I wanted for cover art but I knew I wanted something special and unique. I was walking down Smith Street in Collingwood, Melbourne, one afternoon and noticed an amazing photo in the window of a gallery, I was drawn in by this shot and went in to check out the exhibition. I was totally blown away and remember thinking that this was the photographer I needed to do my artwork’.

‘I got her card from the gallery and called her the following day. I told her how I had found her and said I would like to meet her. When I met Nicole Reed, I explained that I would love her to do the album work and that I was totally open to her coming up with the concept. I gave Nicole some tracks that I thought represented the key sounds and messages of the record.

‘From that, she came back to me with the idea of doing nine shots that tell a story that is forever like a cycle: blood on the hands gets worse in each shot and the unit and tie represent the nine to five grind and the pinch of the system. The photo story basically means that every day out there is a fight and I am constantly trying to be free of the system.

‘Once the photos were done, I asked Nicole to recommend a graphic artist, which is where Timba A from Wooden Toy magazine, came on board. I went through the same process with him, where I gave him the music to listen to and he came up with the idea of the whole 50s vibe and making the nine photos look like a comic book.

‘In the end, it all looked great, and I feel like I did a great job with the album and they put as much time and energy in to their artwork as I did. I love working with creative people and giving them my music to interpret and the space to do their own thing’.
