The news comes off the back of his success working with soulful songstress Aaradhna whose latest album Treble & Reverb he produced. The critically acclaimed album’s lead single Wake Up has gone platinum, and the record taken her to new heights with the recent announcement of her own record deal with Republic Records US.
A true ambassador of NZ Music, P-Money also co-wrote and produced five of the biggest New Zealand singles of the past decade; “Not Many”, “Stand Up”, “Stop The Music feat. Scribe”, “Keep On Callin feat. Akon” and “Everything feat. Vince Harder”. The latter of which broke through to UK airwaves on BBC1 and was dubbed Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record in the World.
As a teenager P-Money poured endless hours into his craft of DJ’ing, a discipline that would see him compete in numerous DJ Battles worldwide and culminate in a 3rd Place prize at the DMC World DJ Championship (a Bronze Medal in the Olympics of the DJ World!).
The skills developed during those competitive years are evident every time P takes the stage, and in the diverse range of artists lining up to collaborate with him – just in the last year he has worked with sister DJ duo MayaVanya, George FM buddy Dan Aux, Iva Lamkum, Six60 and Australian emcee Sky’High. P-Money is currently working on his fourth studio album Gratitude, due for release later this year.
Wake Up is taken from Sky’High’s debut album Forever Sky’High and features New Zealand Hip Hop artist David Dallas with the track being produced by Cam Bluff. The album is out now through Elefant Traks and can be purchased here.
Filmed and edited by Tristan Edouard & Bryce Hooper. Sky’High has just been confirmed to perform for the launch of the 2012 Deadly Awards at SBS Studios. The purpose of the Deadly Awards is to recognise the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to their community and to Australian society.
The Deadlys showcases the outstanding achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and provides identifiable national and local role models to inspire all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and particularly our young people. You can catch Sky’High live on the Home Brew Speakeasy Official Album release tour next month.
Grindin’ & Elefant Traks invite you to the live experience of Forever Sky’High, the debut album from Sky’High, the most unexpected signing to the Elefant Traks label yet. Some people just won’t get it. They’ll see the rough and miss the diamond.
Others will hear the raw aggression and recognise the ideas, hooks and melodies are undeniable proof of one of the most exciting voices to emerge in local hip hop yet. Sky’High diversifies and illuminates the possibilities of what’s going on here, giving volume to an Australian voice the mainstream generally shut down. The creative fearlessness of Sky’High’s debut not only hits the mark but crashes through it. Whether it’s the grime of Reign, or the hip hop of Don Dada or Forever Gone, she remorselessly smashes it outta the park. But it’s when Sky reveals her vulnerability in the brutal yet achingly beautiful Nuclear Love that the listener stops dead in their tracks.
This is why else world-renowned NZ producer P-Money pursued her—the first Australian act he’s overseen. It’s why Elefant Traks got on deck and why Duck Down artist David Dallas collaborated on the album. It’s also why Rolling Stone and Sydney Morning Herald pinpointed her out as an artist to watch. Sky’High is not the softly-spoken female you’re expecting. There is no other genre that could unearth someone as special as her. Uncompromisingly tough and en- dearingly cheeky, Sky’High’s invigorating talent will disarm you and challenge your perceptions. What do you see in the rough?
Tour Dates Saturday 30th June – Laundry Bar, Melbourne Thursday 5th July – Coniston Lane, Brisbane
This Is How We Never Die is the refreshingly on-point third instalment from prestigious Sydney producer Chasm. Joined by local and international artists; Chasm approaches beats like a learned artist with a brush, building on classic principles to create evolutionary new music.
aahh: This Is How We Never is the title to this absolute masterpiece of a production album. Explain to us the concept behind the title of the LP and what the you wanted to accomplish with this album? Chasm: The title is taken from a Currensy line I heard on one of his latest tapes, ‘Real music lasts forever, this is how we never die’. I just really like the phrase and I have always loved that idea with music, that it’s a legacy, something you can leave behind when your gone and people can hear it twenty, fifty years later and still feel it.With this album, I was just making music that I was feeling, I was just interested in working with MC’s that I loved and respected and making good soul music, that’s it.
aahh: When did you begin developing the concept to this album and how long did it take you to complete from start to finish? Chasm: I sat down with my manager and kinda said ok let’s do this now, maybe eight months ago, something like that. Before that I just had a verse done here, a verse done there and had a bunch of beats I knew I wanted to use. But I was busy with other projects so it was just a matter of organising a timeline and making the whole thing happen, but once it got underway it came together quite quickly really. For this album I used the MPC 5000, Logic, Maschine, records, a bunch of soft synths and a Moog Source. That was the artillery.
aahh: The emcee’s featured on This Is How We Never Die reads out like a who’s who of hip hop. We’d like to ask you about all the artists involved, but can you just give us a little background on a few of your favourites and how the relationships came about. Chasm: I had a great session with Guilty Simpson and Phat Kat when they were in town, such humble good dudes and we had a dope studio session. Both were inspiring to be in the lab with. Also to collaborate with Lazy Grey, Delta and Brad Strut was for me a huge thing. All legends of the scene and crazy talents so to have them bless my joints was killer. Gappy Ranks was another highlight, he came down to my studio when he was on tour out here, he just vibed on that beat in the lab and wrote and recorded it on the spot, another inspiring session watching him work like that.
aahh: The first single from the album is titled The Truth and features The Tongue, Hau and Dazastah. Tell us a bit about the recording process with this one we hear it was knocked out pretty quickly by the MC’s? Chasm: Yeah Daz had a day booked at 301 studios here in Sydney. He was out here on tour, and had a day in the studio finishing off collabs I think. So he had invited a few people down to work on stuff and asked me to pass through. So I took my MPC down with the original of ‘The Truth’ just chopped really simply on the sampler. When I played the tune those guys were all vibing on it and the energy in the studio was ill that day, just a good creative vibe, so they all ended up writing that afternoon and recording later that night. It was dope. Hau put down the chorus a couple of months later.
aahh: Your no stranger to the music scene in Australia, you’ve released albums with Astronomy Class through Elefant Traks and also solo work through Obese Records including numerous other side projects. What keeps you inspired and motivated to keep producing music? Chasm: I just love music and I love being creative so it’s just something I always will do, even if I get frustrated and sick of the industry, give myself a few days off and I’m excited again to get in the studio and make something. I guess mainly its just hearing music old or new that is inspiring that gets me pumped to make more music, and just life, things in my life motivate me to express myself through the music.
aahh: What was one of the hardest challenges you faced on producing an album like this, especially with its international artists? Chasm: It was just time-consuming organising everyone, making sure I got all the parts back when I needed them and making sure everyone recorded when they said they would. The hardest thing though was the different microphones and booths that were in the mix! For one track you could have two or three different recordings so there was no consistency with the mic and room sound for all the vocals which made it tricky when it came to mixing. Trying to make it all sound cohesive was a tough one.
aahh: You launched This Is How We Never Die at the GoodGod Small Club in Sydney earlier in the month with a host of local names plus a special guest in DJ Neil Armstrong. Tell us about that. Chasm: It was a great night, all my people’s showed up so it was a nice vibe man, I appreciated the love that was shown from the crowd and all the rappers that jumped up with me, it was a mad night, I had a ball. We busted out a bunch of Astronomy Class tunes which is always fun, having Ozi Batla and The Tongue and Sir Robbo on stage and Thundamentals fellas got up and did some older joints that we did together which was cool.
aahh: Four dates have been announced in the This Is How We Never Die tour, are there any more dates planned and do you have any details you’d like to share on that? Chasm: Through July I’ll be touring the country in support of the album. The show will be a sound system style show with Hau on the mic to hype the crowd for me, should be a lot of fun. Will be having guests jump up at certain shows too!
aahh: What’s next for Chasm? We know you have many side projects, will we see say a Dr Don Don album soon? Chasm: Yes Dr Don Don album is pretty much done so gonna drop that after a couple more singles. Astronomy Class are hopefully gonna do an EP this year too and I have some ideas for the next Chasm release so hopefully will begin that too.

Back by popular demand New Zealand Hip Hop artist David Dallas returns to the East Coast of Australia with his full live band The Daylight Robbery and special guests. David Dallas begins The Rose Tint turning over a new leaf, stating there will be no more sitting round, wishing things were different round here.
And so the tone is set for the South Auckland rappers sophomore album (nominated for NZ Music Award Album Of The Year, Best Urban/Hip Hop Album and Best Male Solo Artist), with his self-motivational dialogue as the running theme. I write songs to inspire myself and hopefully it has that effect on others, says Dallas. The premise of The Rose Tint is not so much about seeing things as better than they actually are, but rather, as Dallas explains, concentrating on things that are going good, or working to make things better, rather than just whining about how things suck.
From a drunken night out conversing with friends about aspirations of greatness on Take A Picture, to being too shy to put yourself out there on Sideline, to getting rid of the people in your life trying to bring you down on Dream, The Rose Tint is universally relatable. I always have to draw from my own internal experiences and how I’m feeling. I figure, if I feel this way, there’s probably a bunch of other people who feel like that too, says David. That’s not to say struggles are ignored on The Rose Tint, as family illness, industry frustrations, and the fear of failure are just some of the issues he wrestles with, however, betterment and perseverance are the overriding messages. Til Tomorrow garnered rave single reviews, topping the online Hype Machine charts, with the superb Special Problems directed vid giving the song new life. The Freddie Gibbs featured Caught In A Daze has cemented Dallas as an artist not to be taken lightly, his smooth delivery appealing to both underground and commercial sensibilities, with the accompanying video the perfect match to the songs laid back vibe.
While duo Fire and Ice handle the majority of the production, P-Money, 41 and Exile also lend a hand to David’s latest offering, with PNC, Jordache and Pieter T rounding out the features. The Rose Tint is David Dallas first full length offering to the US market, and while hes coming in as the underdog, hes not looking to play that position long. His talent has already been recognized on some of the worlds most influential international hip-hop sites including Nah Right, 2dopeboyz, XXL, The Source and 50 Cents own This Is 50 amongst others. Dallas also recently won an MTV US online poll being voted as their Iggy Artist Of The Week, and had his music videos for The Rose Tints Take A Picture and Big Time (from his debut album) added to rotation on all MTV networks across the US – a huge break for any new artist. Take A Picture was also featured on the home page of Youtube, receiving over 100,000 views in just a week.
The Rose Tint was originally available as a free digital download via David’s own website, gathering over 55,000 downloads. The Rose Tint Deluxe is the first time the album is available physically and takes it a step further with four new songs featuring some of the USs greatest talents such as Kid Daytona and Tayyib Ali. There is also a special appearance by Black Moon member, co-founder of Duck Down and all round Hip Hop legend, Buckshot, who joins Dallas on special bonus track Aint Coming Down. The Rose Tint Deluxe is accompanied by a bonus disc of the instrumentals from The Rose Tint.
David Dallas will be in Australia performing on the following dates: Friday 8th June – The Esplanade, Melbourne Saturday 9th June – Civic Underground, Sydney Sunday 10th June – The Zoo, Brisbane
