Reason – Window Of Time Video Clip

23 11 2011

Reason’s Window of Time is the final solo effort of his pioneering career, a true testament to his twenty plus years of dedication to Australian hip hop and reflective of his journey thus far. Window of Time, in essence, is intended to open minds and expose its listener to a mélange of historical, situational and currently pressing themes.

Reason, both a school teacher and youth workshop facilitator, takes actualities to words with the intention of inspiring positive action. The album’s conceptual roots are of a worldly emphasis in contrast to the artists previous releases that were more indicative of his local scene. From the ferocity of Rep The Legacy featuring Lazy Grey, to the dark soundtrack-esque tones of Action featuring Lotek, and the sonorous sentiment within I Want featuring SuffaWindow Of Time is an engaging exhibition of melodic texture.

Title track Window of Time epitomises Reason’s passion for history, and the importance of education in everyday life personifying the idea of ‘words from a teacher’. Title track Window of Time epitomises Reason’s passion for history, and the importance of education in everyday life personifying the idea of ‘words from a teacher’. Run Tingz featuring AJ (UK) and Iron Braydz (UK), is an impressive exchange between three emcees from different walks of life, the track demonstrates the unifying effect of shared passion. We Come From An Era featuring Hau (Koolism, triple J’s hip hop show), is a generational sift through the idiosyncrasies which defined the times from which the two emcees grew up.

In typical Reason style, there are guests aplenty throughout the album. Sharing mic duties are world class emcees and vocalists including Lazy Grey, Bias B, Hau, Dialectrix, Hunter, Iron Braydz (UK), Lotek (UK), AJ (UK), Joyride, KYE, Mdusu, Rachel Berry & Rapaport. The album credits superb production from Suffa, Debris, Debate, Seanie B, Mdusu, Simplex, Geko & WIZDM. The metaphorical Window of Time brings the career of this pioneer and veteran of the Australian scene full circle, as Reason takes on all before him with one last, heartfelt and monumental contribution to a scene by which he has helped to create.

‘There is music for all generations throughout the release. Conceptually, the album is for the youth, party goers, intelligentsia, the purists and the recent graduates to this very unique sound. I’ve taken my time, spent painstaking hours refining my lyrics, requesting musical changes and thus the process has in short, been a worthy experience. Like a top shelf scotch, it often takes time for maturity to be achieved.’ Reason

Levelheaded – The Spice Of Life Review

15 11 2009

levelheaded spice of life allaussie hip hopLevelheaded began making aussie hip hop during high school in the late nineties with a group of friends on a budget set-up in the Adelaide Hill. Most of the stuff thrown down consisted of drunken freestyles and scribbled down raps that never made it our of Debate’s parents house.

In 2001, Levs and a few mates formed Train of Thought, In 2002 the  guys released a demo that sold over 500 copies and played shows with artist such as Hilltop Hoods, Hyjack & Torcha, Crossbred Mongrels, Pegz, Funkoars, After Hours, the list goes on. One of the early highlights Levs recalls for the demo tour, was the album launch for The Calling with the  Hilltop Hoods. A landmark mark show is aussie hip hop. The following six months were filled with blood, sweat and tears which culminated mid 2004 with the release of Train Of Thoughts first full length LP Moving Heads.
This release earn’t them support for international acts such as Jungle Brothers and regular airplay on Triple J. In 2006 Levelheaded left the group to move to the Riverland in the northeast of SA to teach PE at Glossop High School. For the next year or so no music was made. The only rhymes that were spat over this period were battles while on lunchtime yard duty with students.
Due to the common interest in education Levelheaded has a strong connection with Melbourne emcee Reason. Levs went on to appear on Reasons 2006 album Life’s a Lesson and supported Reason in various shows over the next few years.
The inspiration for the new album The Spice Of Life came when fellow Train Of Thought member Forecast, came back from a stint traveling overseas and they made the track Blazing Skies in September 2007. Levelheaded quickly secured some beats from Debate and began work on the new album. The Spice Of Life was intended for release in 2008 but with the combination of distance from the studio and difficulty of working with so many guests on the album made it extremely difficult to finish, so the blood, sweat and tears once again, pour through the release. With the help of Suffa and Debris on the sound and the expert production of Debate’s 15 years of beat making experience, The Spice Of Life was set for release.

The Spice of Life is packed with 13 tracks recorded at the Train of Thought lab, featuring production by Debate, appearances by the Funkoars, Reason, Headlock, Train Of Thought, Eslev and  Sydetrak. The album has been dubbed a tribute to the hard-working, diverse nature of Levelheaded.
The cover art work features a cool Levelheaded logo and cover design by Darren Lock, we also see a nice 4 page booklet with the usual track info and shout outs.  The first track Down To Earth is an intro tracks of sorts, reminding you instantly that Levelheaded is here to get your head nodding. Debate’s work on this track is exceptional and you can’t go past Levelheaded’s smooth, composed rhyming style. The album ranges from straight up party jams to deep thought-provoking tracks and everything in between. The main line in the title track The Spice of Life is a true  representation of the sound on this album. This is the classic BBQ track, ie great on the stereo with ya mates, a few brews.

Countdown featuring fellow educator Reason, is a highlight track. Both verses from Reason and Levelheaded are lyrically tight as you could expect. Debate once again excels on Countdown, the pan pipe-ish type flutes set the track off. Doubleheader featuring After Hours emcee Headlock is a harder track carrying a dark beat, the two emcees team up well together  here. Levelheaded demonstrates an experience, that only comes from an emcee with a long history in the game.
Bring You Back To Life is an instrumental track that really reinforces the Spice Of Life theme. The track features some dope samples from some old boom bap classics. This track, leads as a huge intro for the track Fat Tape, featuring Train Of Thought. This will really bring you back to the days of Sony walkmans and cassette tapes, forget those mp3′s and iPods.

Too Late Now tells the story of a young kid who gets bullied and shoots up a school. We really love these lyrical story type tracks. Debates work really sets the mood on this track and the cuts from Hacksaw are some of the coolest on the album. Levelheaded takes a step away from the traditional beats, collabing with Adelaide heavy metal band 8th Degree on two tracks. The combination of heavy guitars, passionate rhyming and killer cuts result in the tracks The Hills, an anthem featuring Slats and Eslev, and also the politically driven track Bring Them Down. Levelheaded really brings something unique here pulls it off quite nicely.

The Spice Of Life
is an album with something for everyone, party jams, head nodding shit, and some  thought-provoking tracks. Levelheaded really shines on the mic and his experience as an artist has seen him release an album that sounds exceptional. Levelheaded brings back that classic aussie hip hop sound. This album really reminds us of the reason why we feel in love with aussie hip hop in the first place, the ‘hanging with mates’, the ‘getting on it’ and as cliché as it sounds, the music.

The Spice Of Life should cement Levelheaded as one of the country’s most talented emcees. All in all this is one of our top albums of the year. In every area of production, and rhymes, the guys are all 100% solid. It’s great to see some South Australian hip hop back on the map and doing it large this year. If you love that classic sound of straight up aussie hip hop, then grab this release. We give this album 4.7 out of 5.

hilltophodds

Make sure you head out and grab the latest issue of ‘mag’ magazine. These guys have a massive cover this month, with Suffa, Debris and Pressure from the Hilltop Hoods. The interview covers everything from the beginnings of Golden Era Records, to the making of the hugely successful State Of The Art album.

State Of The Art – Track By Track

10 07 2009

stateof the art

Here we have a little track by track run down of the fulll State Of The Art album.
The run down is done by all three members of the Hilltop Hoods, Suffa, Debris and Pressure. It’s a great read and we’d like to see more groups do the same. Read on…

1. The Return
SUFFA: We wanted the opener to be a punch in the face. I think we’ve achieved that.
PRESSURE: Very much so. We wanted to come back heavy and aggressive and we’ve definitely done that. It’s a big slap in the face.
SUFFA: It’s three years of pent up aggression coming out. There’s no real topic to it.
PRESSURE: Nah, the topic is we’re back – f**k you! It’s a classic hard-nosed Hip Hop track, a really heavy re-introduction to the group.

2. Super Official
PRESSURE: This is a bit more laid-back than the first track.

DEBRIS: It has a pretty typical Hoods sound.

PRESSURE: It’s pretty much a classic braggadocios-style Hip Hop track

SUFFA: That’s the sort of track we like making, the sort of Hip Hop we like. We like rhyming for the sport of rhyming.
PRESSURE: Smart-arse punch-lines. It’s about the flow and the sound.

3. Chase That Feeling
SUFFA: This is the first single that we’re gonna drop. We have a quartet from the ASO [Adelaide Symphony Orchestra] playing on it. This track’s about latching on to a good feeling and keeping that momentum going, pursuing it. That feeling could come from anywhere; it might be the feeling you get from friends, food, life, love, music…
PRESSURE: My second verse is about chasing that sense of freedom. Each verse is about something a little bit different but it all comes back to pursuing that feeling.

4. She’s So Ugly
PRESSURE: This one of the tougher tracks on the album.

SUFFA: A crew called Poker Beats from Germany produced it; they started sending us beats a while ago and one really stuck out. The song itself is about the state of Hip Hop and how we’re frustrated by what it’s become. When we’re saying ‘she’s so ugly’ we’re not just talking about how Hip Hop has become pop music though. In my verse I point out some of the frustrations you have as a Hip Hop producer – in terms of sampling and copyright restrictions. If these restrictions were loosened the quality of Hip Hop music would be so much better right now.
PRESSURE: Yeah it all changed when everyone started suing each other over copyright infringements. The song is also an ode to an old Hip Hop classic by an artist called Common, a track called I Used To Love Her.

5. Still Standing
SUFFA: We love this track – it’s definitely one of my favorites on the album.
PRESSURE: It’s got a real bounce to it. We did this track to show a bit of appreciation to our supporters, everyone who’s been there along the way. We also did it as a way of saying we’re still around and still doing things the right way. We’re still standing.

6. Classic Example
PRESSURE: We wanted to do a vintage nineties sounding track, that’s why we called it Classic Example.

SUFFA: This track features Pharoahe Monch. He’s one of only two guest MC’s on the album. On past albums we’ve had up to 10 or 15 guest MC’s but we wanted to change that this time around. In our opinion Hip Hop records are getting too bloated with guests.

PRESSURE: We thought less would be more with this record. This is produced by DJ Nu-Mark. He sent us a beat CD and this is the one that stuck for us.

SUFFA: And he was super excited about getting Pharoahe on it.

PRESSURE: Almost as excited as we were. We grew up massive fans of Pharoahe Monch. It was really good to work with him. It was very inspiring.
SUFFA: We brought him over from New York and he stayed with us for a week. He’s almost like a hippy when it comes to music. He’ll talk about it in almost a metaphysical sense. I love being around people who are that passionate.

7. Chris Farley
SUFFA: This is our ode to [American comedian] Chris Farley. An ode to how Chris went out.
PRESSURE: This is our party track. It’s about going out in a big way like all the greats: Bon Scott, Morrison, Hendrix… [laughs]

8. The Light You Burned
SUFFA: We’ll love doing this live.

PRESSURE: Yeah, this’ll work well live, even though it’s a bit of a bitter song. It’s about things that should have been beautiful but didn’t pan out that way.
DEBRIS: This track features our second guest MC Trials from the Funkoars.

9. Parade Of The Dead
SUFFA: This is an ode to [legendary Zombie film director] George Romero. It continues on the Dawn Of The Dead/Land of the Dead/Day Of The Dead tradition.

PRESSURE: It’s about us fighting zombies [laughs].
SUFFA: People can use it as an instructional tool on how to survive a zombie attack.

10. Last Confession
SUFFA: This is Pressure’s solo track.
PRESSURE: The idea came to me when Suffa produced this beat with a vocal sample in it that said ‘Oh Lord’. I wanted to make a slightly more serious song and that sample gave me the idea of doing a track like I was in a confessional booth getting some stuff of my chest.
Like I say in the track I wrote this song for my son, and I dedicate it to him.

11. Hillatoppa
SUFFA: It’s another one of those rhyming for the sport of it tracks. We wanted to make it like the Hoods’ anthem. If we had a theme song, this would be it.

12. Fifty In Five
SUFFA: This is my solo track. The sample is from a song called 2010. The original track was written in 1960, it’s asked what the world will be like in 2010. This track is sort of like a response. I had the idea of writing a track that broke down the last fifty years in five minutes – 1960 to 2010. It’s got my brother [Nick Lambert] playing guitar and one of the guys from Lowrider [John Bartlett] playing piano. He also wrote the string arrangements. The lyrics took me more than three months to write.
PRESSURE: With the crescendo at the end, it suited being the last track on the album. The album starts with a punch in the face and is more soulful towards the end.

Level Headed – The Spice Of Life

3 07 2009

spiceoflife

Last night in the Riverland of South Australia, Level Headed lauched his first solo album, The Spice Of Life. Since leaving the group Train Of Thought in 2005, moving to teach physical education at Glossop High School, ensured that no music would be made for a while. The only rhymes that were spat over the next year or so were battles while on lunchtime yard duty with students, and a track made with a year ten student.

Due to their common interest in education, Level Headed had a strong connection with Melbourne MC Reason. He appeared on his 2006 album Life’s A Lesson, and supported Reason in various shows over the next couple of years. The inspiration for the new album The Spice of Life came when a fellow Train of Thought member Forecast, came back from a stint traveling overseas and they made the track Blazing Skies in September 07. Level Headed quickly secured some beats from Debate, the long serving producer/friend who has been there from the beginning, and began work on the new album.

In 2008, Level Headed made a second track with Reason called 24 To One for his album The Tides Are Turning. They performed both tracks together at the Obese Block Party, and Reason’s album launch at L!ve

The Spice of Life
was intended for release in 2008, but teaching and community commitments in the Riverland made this impossible as Level Headed could only travel back to Adelaide to hit Train of Thought Studios every second weekend. The combination of distance from the studio and difficulty of working with so many guests on the album has made it extremely difficult to finish, so the blood, sweat and tears once again, pour through the release. With the help of Suffa and Debris on the sound, and the expert production of Debate’s 15 years of beat-making experience, The Spice of Life will bring a polished sound coupled with smooth flowing rhymes and passionate topics to the listener’s ears. With cuts by Hacksaw and appearances by Trials, Headlock, Train Of Thought, Reflux, Eslev and Sydetrack this release is sure to be a classic.

It will be in stores soon through Amphead Music but is available NOW through Level Headed’s online store, here. You can also grab some cool merch, hoodies etc. Check it!
