Dialectrix – Satellite Official EP Launch

6 02 2013

After spending the last year or so accustoming himself to fatherhood and fine tuning his 3rd LP The Cold Light Of Day with long time collaborator Plutonic Lab, Dialectrix is kickstarting 2013 with a rare and limited edition release involving some of the worlds best talents.

Dialectrix tour

The result is Satellite, an exclusive 5 track EP being released to vinyl only (digital D/L included) with each track showcasing an overseas producer while Dtrix exhibits the hunger and versatility the Sydney wordsmith is known for.

Artwork for the EP is being handled by April77 Creative, longtime collaborators with Dialectrix and creators of artwork for Obese Records, Hilltop Hoods, Bliss N Eso and many more. A limited number of Satellite EP will also be packaged with April77′s new book scheduled for release early 2013. The book will showcase an extensive selection of album cover artwork produced by the studio over the past 10 years.

Stop brings a barrage of braggadocio-battle raps intertwined with self assured ridiculousness that screams of live rowdiness over a smacking beat from Germany’s Suff Daddy with the additional finesse of one of Australia’s greatest turntablists DJ Bonez on the cut. Dialectrix shows an introspective view to his inner thoughts on the smooth and esoteric Enjoy The Music featuring the UK’s shining producer Eric Lau with fellow Blue Mountains brethren DJ Morgs of the Thundamentals appearing for a cameo scratch.

Dialectrix then goes in with a vicious delivery and a no holds barred attitude over former Scratch Pervert Mr Thing’s (UK) gigantic What Is This World Coming To?. From the media/social systems to his vehement disappointment in the music industry and the world in general, he leaves no stone unturned as to who and what are ruining the world around him. Sydney Psychosis is a tainted homage to the city over a rolling, hypnotic beat supplied courtesy of New Zealand’s Haz Beats of the notorious Home Brew Crew with cuts executed by the world renowned DJ Revolution.

The title track Satellite is spearheaded by one of LA’s finest beatsmiths Exile delivering his classic soulful chops as Dtrix alikens his position in the world to a satellite bunker with music being his main source to communicate abroad. The Satellite EP is a unique one off approach to mustering an eclectic and foreign soundscape while remaining underpinned with Dialectrix’s familiar and technical flow. Secure your copy of this extremely limited release before they are all gone!

Rainman – Bigger Pictures

9 04 2012

Rainman is poised to drop his second album Bigger Pictures, in stores Friday 4 May through Obese distribution. The album sees Sammsonite (The Optimen) return for the lion’s share of the production but also features some of Australia’s finest beat – smiths including the APRA and AIR Award winning, ARIA nominated Count Bounce (TZU/Urthboy), DJ Bonez, Mangohig (Sietta), Chasm (Astronomy Class), Cam Bluff (Spit Syndicate/The Tongue/Vegas Aces) and Calski. Rainman is also proud to release the brand new film clip for the single The Valley. An ode to Brisbane’s notorious night spot of the same name, the tune and clip were inspired by and filmed amongst the grit and circumstance found in abundance on any seedy inner-city nighttime adventure. In Rainman’s own words: ‘It’s a pretty jaded and sarcastic portrait of the epicentre of Brisbane’s nightlife that is Fortitude Valley. It’s a place I definitely have a love/hate relationship with, having had some of the best times in my life there, along with the worst – and a whole heap in between.’

The release also comes with the announcement that Rainman has officially become a newly minted member of the Born Fresh Records family, joining label mates and album co-conspirators including producer Cam Bluff and MC’s Tommy Illfigga, Yuin Huzami, Seven, Mr Hill and more. The Valley follows on the success of recently released first single Darlin’ which was received strongly across the country; receiving triple j airplay, FBI Radio (Sydney) rotation and widespread praise for what critics are calling a “classic slice of hip-hop” (Sherlock Ohms.org).

Rainman Announces ‘Darlin’ & National Launch Dates

12 03 2012

Mention Rainman amongst the initiated and the respect attributed to his name is palatable. Recognised nationally as one of Queensland’s finest, Rainman’s list of collaborations, support slots and guest appearances reads like a who’s who of local hip hop.

Rainman is poised to drop his second album Bigger Pictures, in stores Friday 4 May through Obese Distribution. The album sees Sammsonite return for the lion’s share of the production but also features some of Australia’s finest beat – smiths including the APRA and AIR Award winning, ARIA nominated Count Bounce, DJ Bonez, Mangohig (Sietta), Chasm, Cam Bluff and Calski. Guest MCs on the record include Muph, Tommy Illfigga, Yuin Huzami and many more, while Laneous (Laneous & The Family Yah) and Kel on Earth (Bankrupt Billionaires) lend soulful vocals across the album.

The first official single off Bigger Pictures is Darlin’. Featuring and produced by Calski, the track was available as a free download at the end of last year limited to one hundred fans only but will now be available on iTunes from Fri 23 March.

Rainman deliberately wanted Darlin’ to set the scene for the new album. In his own words: Darlin’ is a love song. An ode to lady hip hop, a soul drenched Australian take on Common’s ‘I Used to Love H.E.R’ classic – with a twist. The initial demo of the beat from_Calski inspired me to flip the hip hop-as-lover idea from Common and put a fresh take on it. I didn’t want to just leave it at that though. I’ve been pretty interested in how passionate we all are about hip hop, those of us that grew up with it as kids, and how even for those of us as white kids from Australia, from all that distance away from hip hop’s origins, literally_and culturally, can still feel this whole-hearted connection and even a sense of ownership_of this music. I wanted to try get into the character of what hip hop – the lady – might have to say back to those of us that call her out. I figured she had to be a bit pissed off and wouldn’t be afraid to say it”.

It’s this lyric writing approach – taking songs to that next level of depth – that sets Rainman apart and sees him attract high praise from peers and fans alike. He paints bigger pictures. To launch Darlin’, Rainman will be touring nationally with Calski supporting Joelistics and Diafrix on the Running To Shine National Tour

Trem – For The Term Of His Natural Life (Official Listening Party)

6 10 2011

In a time capsule unearthed in an overgrown train yard on the outskirts of Melbourne, archaeologists discover a dirt encrusted artefact, a codex of the art and science of hip hop based on a blueprint etched in concrete during a period of innovation. It bears the marks of the late 1980s and early 90s when the elemental standards were laid down by a small elite.

The artefact in question is For The Term of His Natural Life, the debut solo LP from Australia’s finest lyrical craftsman, Trem One. To say début is misleading, though. With a small but revered discography including two sought after vinyl EPs and his work with the Lyrical Commission on his own Unkut Recordings label, Trem is an elder statesman. Finally, For The Term… makes good on all the promises of his back catalogue. Following up on 2010’s rapturously received teaser single Omega Man, this project hits every target set for it.

From 6-9pm tomorrow night in Fitzroy Melbourne, you can take part in something that’s usually only available to the industry heads, an Official Listening Party for Trem’s – For The Term Of His Natural Life. These words were posted on Trem’s website  a few days ago.

“We takin it back with this one, but its something I always thought was a cool concept although generally initially catering to industry heads, why not flip it on its ear and invite everyone? The first of a series of listening parties, we are kickin off the album release festivities with a bang.
Melbourne heads & touring interstaters, please join us at the Laundry Bar in Fitzroy on Friday the 7th Oct. between 6-9pm to help celebrate the release of this thing! Regardless of whether you’re an industry type, Trem fan or street urchin we’d love you to come along and help celebrate such a momentous occasion!
I’ll be offloading the album as well so if you havent had the opportunity to secure a copy via pre-order and can’t hit up one of the dope Indy spots stocking it on Friday, I got you covered (while they last of course!)
We’re also screening the first viewing of my new clip ‘Animal Kingdom’ a track produced by non other than Beat Butcha, featuring Donny The Chief of my Kings Konekted fam and executed by the Game Changers (Josh, Heata n Hank)! It’ll screen live to air on youtube as well round the same time but what better way to peep it than on the big screen! So if you’re free, on your way home, or on your way out, we’d love to see you there, the Laundry’s even offering half priced longnecks to kick the weekend off in style…”

There will be a couple of Listening Parties taking place over the month of October. Brisbane and Adelaide outdoor dates to be confirmed in the next few days. Stay tuned. If you haven’t already check out our recent interview with Trem on his For The Term Of His Natural Life album release right here. Trem – For The Term Of His Natural Life is out tomorrow.

Trem – For The Term Of His Natural Life

22 09 2011

In a time capsule unearthed in an overgrown train yard on the outskirts of Melbourne, archaeologists discover a dirt encrusted artifact, a codex of the art and science of hip hop based on a blueprint etched in concrete during a period of innovation. It bears the marks of the late 1980s and early 90s when the elemental standards were laid down by a small elite.

The artifact in question is For The Term of His Natural Life, the debut solo LP from Australia’s finest lyrical craftsman, Trem One. To say debut is misleading, though.

Long-awaited doesn’t being to describe Trem’s first full-length, but the notorious perfectionist was never going to release anything less than a flawless gem: “I could’ve dropped varying versions of a solo album many times over, but it wouldn’t be this one. This is the one that I envisioned.”

Having fine-tuned his production chops on two Lyrical Commission releases and Brad Strut’s acclaimed Legend: Official, Trem now steps back from the boards somewhat, producing three cuts himself and inviting Beat Butcha (UK), Amazing Maze (Germany), Thorotracks (NYC), Must, Wik and long time compatriot Prowla to contribute to the soundscape. The result is a coherent 14-tracker that evokes the early nineties with a reactionary vigour. For The Term… exploits the prototypes of finely crafted braggadocio, visceral storytelling and the art of metaphor epitomised by MCs such as Rakim.

Beyond the razor sharp battle verses, the rush of the mission is depicted on the vivid graf narrative Hard Yards and Trem talks like sex on the sticky and lewd Strips. Elsewhere, Ever Since and Reminisce trace the roots of his career back to the 80s while Kings Court is a time-honoured ode to skills over suitably regal beat from Prowla.

Throughout the album, artfully collaged vocal snippets are deployed in the place of a hook by Prowla, DJ Bonez, DJ Dcide and Trem himself. Moreover, Trem breaks down the fading science of crate digging and chorus cuts alongside a masterful example of the latter from California’s DJ Revolution on For The Record.

Complementing the painstakingly composed verses and carefully considered cuts is an equal precision in selecting guests. Brisbane’s Kings Konekted is represented on two tracks, with the group’s Dontez providing the menacing chorus on second single Animal Kingdom. Both Dontez and Culprit commit verses to Russian Roulette, which also features Brad Strut. This grim and epic centrepiece to the album could be read as a passing of the torch from Lyrical Commission to one of the few new names worthy of carrying the flame.

Speaking of the rare collaboration outside his core crew, Trem notes: “I personally think they have the makings of something real special, but for whatever reason don’t seem to get the recognition of other new schoolers with half the talent. Konekted have crafted a mad original style that’s all they’re own but still sits within the blueprint’s guidelines.”

Another unexpected collaboration is a dream match up with Brisbane’s own old hand Lazy Grey on the vicious Vet Clinic, an interstate exercise in amateur euthanasia. In Trem’s words: “Collaborating with Lazy has been on the to-do list for a real long time and for various reasons it never eventuated. After tinkering with the idea for a while during the album’s making, it wasn’t til the right beat landed in my lap that I thought, shit, that’s the one! I am truly honoured to have the god on board.”

In a final surprise, lead single Omega Man is reprised and flipped with help from Brooklyn’s Q-Unique (ex-The Arsonists, and a guest on Lyrical Commission’s – Murderous Metaphors) and a fresh verse by Trem: “Being that there was a chunk of time between the single and the album I wanted to give it some new light. Instead of a traditional remix, I let that ill Prowla beat ride and rehashed my verse, adding a new dimension. Re-acquainting with Q on the track was a no-brainer.”

The sum of these parts is equal measures history lesson, skills seminar and classic storytelling. For the Term of His Natural Life is the culmination of twenty years of hard labour, an unapologetic exercise in hip hop artisanship that steps outside of time to take its rightful place in the Antipodean rap canon.

For the Term of His Natural Life will be available through independent records stores, directly from www.unkutrecordings.com and digitally via iTunes.

• Commencing with the album release, a Limited Edition Artist Series of merch will drop, each linking a leading Australian graffiti writer with a song on the album. Linz, who also painted the album cover, tackles ‘Kings Court’ for the debut t-shirt. Next up, Sofles will handle ‘Strips’, with later editions to be announced.

• A video for the second single ‘Animal Kingdom’ featuring Dontez of Kings Konekted, will drop to coincide with the album release, executed by Josh Davis, Heata and Discourse, who also delivered the stunning high definition clip for ‘Omega Man’

New Bias B Film Clip: ‘Midlife feat. Joyride’

20 05 2011

Executed by Full Clip (Heata & Discourse) Midlife featuring Joyride produced by DJ Bonez taken from the album Biaslife. Bias B has been an unrelenting presence on the Australian Hip Hop scene spanning over decades. The Melbourne Hip Hop innovator returns to the mic with another tenacious testament to his craft in the form of Biaslife.

The 5th solo release to his name, Biaslife solidly exhibits a maturity and discernment only obtainable after time, persistence, and unrequited dedication to one’s art. Bias has come a long way since his pioneering debut album Beezwax in 1998, just like his local scene. Although Aussie Hip Hop is expanding and changing around him, Bias still continues to hold his own as one of the first, and one of the best.

The album credits an array of seasoned artists such as Lazy Grey and Len One, Bigfoot, Ciecmate, Fluent Form, Maundz, and Eloqour. The soothing vocals of Joyride and Tali are featured, as well as production mastery from the legendary Lazy Grey, DJ Bonez, Doc Felix, The Statesmen, Aux One, Geko and Discourse.
Midlife, the first single from the album, is illustrative of Bias’s constant battle to find equilibrium between family and artistry. With outstanding production by DJ Bonez accompanied by the soulful voice of Joyride on the hook, Midlife epitomizes that classic Bias B sound.

In comparing Bias’s past works to Biaslife, the new album stands alone when it comes to subject matter. Steering away from a comfort zone of local Hip Hop politics, Bias B has chosen this time to delve into broader themes. Exploring world issues in the Doc Felix produced When I Sleep and reflecting on the tragedy of suicide in How Did I End Up Here, whilst also expressing a love for life in tracks like In Love With The Music and Whenever You Need Me (dedicated to the mother of his two children). The release of Biaslife will be accompanied by a national tour from June through to August.

Ishu presents the new single “World Domination feat. Elf Tranzporter”

7 02 2011

Following the successful release of his album A World in Progress and single Progress feat. Mantra, Ishu is releasing a second single titled World Domination feat. Elf Tranzporter.

An up-tempo hip hop tune driven by regal horns and dramatic strings, with the highly skilled veteran Elf Tranzporter on the mic. Elf Tranzporter, well known for his politically charged lyricism both solo and as part of the Melbourne hip hop outfit Combat Wombat, delves into events and ethical issues in the pharmaceutical industry and conniving corporate takeover strategies.

Much like the rest of the album, World Domination feat. Elf Tranzporter was born from Ishu’s recent travels through Europe and Asia. Collecting samples and field recordings along the way; Ishu found inspiration in every country he visited, immersing himself in local culture and sketching beats in bunk beds all over the world. Other artists on the album include Mantra, Hau (Koolism), Lotek, Class-A, Dyl Thomas (Polo Club), Pataphysics and more.
