Soliloquy – Double Sided

12 03 2013

At just sixteen years of age, Soliloquy has accomplished more than most young aspiring rappers can even dream of, let alone will ever achieve. His debut performance was in front of a sold out venue, making a guest appearance on stage with New York Hip-Hop legend Pharoahe Monch.

Soliloquy Double Sided

In July of 2011, Soliloquy released his debut EP The Unveiling, receiving much acclaim from industry figures and the general public alike. He spent the following year honing his craft, working on new material and performing around Melbourne. 2012 brought yet another rebirth for Soliloquy, as he has matured lyrically and experientially. His second release Seven showed a more focused and concise lyricist, one with a discerning ear for structure and musical evolution.

Having received airplay and acclaim from triple j for his collaboration with Mantra, Jeremedy (Grey Ghost), Julez and DJ Flagrant on the Max Damage produced Set It Off, Soliloquy is more focused than ever.

Soliloquy’s third offering Double Sided, is a short but concise piece of work that was released early in 2013. Featuring guest verses from Dylan Joel, Remi and Elemont and production from J Smith & Dutch, Max Damage, Billy Hoyle and SilentJay, Double Sided proves Soliloquy to be a more measured lyricist, yet one whom still displays a knack for intelligent and thought provoking lyrics.

With a strong understanding of the foundations of Hip-Hop and respect for its’ future, Soliloquy proves that he intellectually surpasses his mere sixteen years and displays all the hallmarks of a long and prosperous career. Soliloquy’s latest EP Double Sided is available here.

Cam Bluff Interview: Real Beats

3 05 2012

After both artists had been doing their own things respectively, (Cam Bluff & 4thVegas Aces linked up officially mid 2010 and have been creating buzz ever since. The two have been crafting their sophomore EP at the same time as well as trail-blazing the live show circuit with many incredible acts such as Spit Syndicate, Illy, 360Seven and Mr Hill just to name a few.

We hear that Vegas Aces will be aiming to release a free EP at the end of the month, can you tell us a bit about this project?
Well this project has been in the making for the last 8 months. Its going to consist of 7 tracks and will be dropping May 7 for free download. Its going to be called Departure. We came up with the title after we noticed the change in the way we where making music. It refers to departing from what people know our sound as. We want to show people that we can be diverse. The last Ep consisted of the same attributes. This release is going to focus on many diverse and different aspects of todays hip hop, showcasing our talents as both artists and individuals.

The first tastes we’ve seen from this EP included the track Vs Up. Will the EP showcase a diverse range of your production styles or will it be similar to the Vs Up track?
The whole EP has a fresh, innovative, diverse approach to todays australian hip hop sound. We’ve tried to incorporate many sounds from all aspects of what makes hip hop enjoyable, same goes with the lyrics and song arrangements. You could say we have incorporated more electronic aspects to our songs.

Is there a plan for a full Vegas Aces LP?
We are currently working on an album and we are hoping for a late 2012 early 2013 release. I guess the EP will set the tone for the album.

You recently finished up touring with 360 on his ‘Boys Like You’ Tour which saw you hit a heap of stops around the country, what was that tour like?
The tour was incredible, every show brought something new to the table. It’s always fun touring with the Born Fresh Crew and we always bring it. I’ve got mad respect for 60. A lot of people neglect the fact that he is an ever evolving artist. His material is always fresh and interesting. Big things coming for the man.

While on the 360 subject, you also released the official remix of the 360 – Boys Like You. How did that come about?
I actually approached Flagrant in relation to wanting to release a remix. He mentioned this track along with a few others, though I decided to move forward with Boys Like You. We had previously released the Hearts A Mess Remix with 360 a few months prior, so I thought it would be fitting to drop this.

You’ve also started working with the ‘Business Man’ DJ Nate Flagrant, tell us a little about whats in store from this brilliant partnership?
We have a few things on the cards at the moment but can’t discuss anything just yet. We’ve been slowly branching into the US, so everyone should start to see some tracks coming out of that part of the world soon. He’s been a huge help during these last 12 months we’ve spent working together.

You’ve also got a beat EP in the works, tell us about that and where do you find the time to fit all of this in?
I’ve actually had this idea for a while now though. I’m actually going to try to drop something towards the end of the year. I might be getting some help on it from another up and coming producer, but more on that later. Man, working full-time and fitting all this in really takes it out of you.

You recently travelled over to the US. How was that experience?
The states were amazing. I initially went over my girlfriend lives there. Got to spend some time in Philly, which is an incredible city. The highlight would have had to have been NY. I got the privilege of meeting because Phat Garry (manager for DJ Premier). We met up in Headquarterz studios in Manhattan and spent the day going through the bulk amount of my beats, talking shop, and discussing the nitty-gritty of the business side of the music industry. It was crazy sitting there playing all my shit in the same room where all my influences and idols once stood and came from.

What are your plans for the rest of the year and for the start of 2013?
I’m actually working very closely with The Tongue on his next release due out early 2013. Keep an eye out for new Spit Syndicate, Illy and Sky’high. I’ll be involved on all projects with plenty more to drop by the end of this year. I’ll also be making the move to Melbourne in early 2013 to work closer with Flagrant and to focus more on my music production and relationships with fellow musicians.

We may have asked you this briefly last time we talked, but let us know what gear you are using at the moment?
I’m using Ableton Live, Native Instruments, Novation Key 49, Akai MPC 2000xl, and a shit load of software synths and plugins.

Boats, Rhymes & Life

28 02 2012

Melbourne’s first ever floating block party Boats, Rhymes & Life. Jump around to bangin’ beats and sure fire rhymes over 2 levels aboard the good ship Victoria Star.

Headlining the top deck is Mantra whose instant classic Got Me Wrong has become part of everyone’s play list over the last few months. Mantra will be rocking the boat with his crew Bam Bam and DJ Wasabi.

We also have DJ/Producer extraordinaire Nick Thayer headlining the lower deck. He has worked with some legendary international artists such as A Skillz and DJ Yoda on seminal labels like Bomb Strikes, Insane Bangers, Southern Fried and Hot Cakes. We think Nick adds a nice twist to the party.

We’re also super excited to have The Psyde Projects on board who are fresh from supporting Pete Rock! MC’s D-Fro, ILResponce and their DJ Mr. Moonshine are purveyors of that super funky golden era style hip hop. Their album Welcome To Boomtown is a must, if you love that old school party style hip hop.

Then there’s the super fresh DJ line-up… DJ Perplex, two-time Redbull Threestyle Australian Champion and three-time Australian DMC champion. A true turntable technician and chief party rocker. It doesn’t stop there, DJ Flagrant who recently won the Victorian heat of the Redbull Threestyle comp is on hand to make the party bounce. Did we mention sneaker freaker and superstar ‘she-jayM.A.F.I.A will also be dropping some serious heat?

DJ Prequel in the house! Having supported hip hop legends such as MF Doom, De La Soul, Odd Future and Grand Wizard Theodore you know Prequel will have the dancefloor heaving.

Zack Rampage is also on deck, you may have heard him spinning old school hip hop across the airwaves on PBS every Friday afternoon. Finally we have Claymore 74 who has been killing it, at the Fabulous Funk parties with The Soul City Sound System. Fat beats and a killer line-up on a boat? Hell yeah!

And remember what happens at sea, stays at sea!

DJ Flagrant – Pool Cleaner Video Mix

17 02 2012

Melbourne’s own DJ Flagrant is a synonymous entity within Australia’s music scene. Candidly nicknamed The Business Man, Flagrant built his reputation over his decade of experience in the many components of the industry.

Australian born / US raised Nate Flagrant began the pursuit of his hip hop career in the early 90’s after seeing DMC competitor Alejan meticulously scratch and blend records at a rave in Nashville, Tennessee. Starting out on a single Sony turntable, Flagrant spent many sleepless nights perfecting his sound to replicate the DMC flavor that had influenced him. After returning to his hometown of Melbourne in 1999, it wasn’t long before Flagrant’s name became synonymous within Australia’s Hip-Hop music scene. Over the past decade Flagrant has been uniquely instrumental in the many components of the industry.

Having not only DJ’d all over the world supporting artists such as Wu Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Jurassic 5, Lyrics Born, Busta Rhymes, DJ Shadow, Method Man & Redman, Mark Ronson, Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West and DJ Premier, the exceptionally multifaceted talent has also put work in both the battle scene and club circuit, competing in the DMC (and placing second in the Team Category of the 2003 DMC National Finals) and bringing the I.T.F. World DJ Battle back to Australia in 2004.

Always at the forefront of DJ technology, Flagrant has been one of the first DJ’s in Australia to embrace video turntablism. With the help of video DJ software, Flagrant cuts, scratches and mashes music video’s, youtube videos and your favorite movies effortlessly and fluently before your very eyes.

His video remixes on YouTube have gathered a lot of interest worldwide with his channel gathering over 390,000+ views and has led to work for countless corporate clients and some of the countries most renowned entertainment venues. Red Bull Thre3style National Final

10 10 2011

After five awesome state qualifiers that rocked dance floors across the country, DJ competition Red Bull Thre3Style is set to roll back into Sydney for the national final this October. The unique, international DJ contest drew massive crowds in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide in the last few weeks, with each city witnessing the hottest local mixmasters displaying epic skills on the decks.

The competition has just one key rule – that each DJ rocks the house by playing a selection of at least three genres or styles of music in a 15-minute set.
Crowned kings of the decks for their ability to get local crowds pumped, the winning DJs from each state will battle it out at Home nightclub on Friday 14th October for the coveted national title, with the winner representing Australia in the Red Bull Thre3Style World Final in Vancouver, Canada in December. The finalists are Butcher from Brisbane, Typhonic from Sydney, Flagrant from Melbourne, Ryley from Adelaide, Junior from Perth and three-time Australian DMC champion, DJ Perplex, who took out Red Bull Thre3Style last year and gained automatic entry to the national final for 2011. Each local winner was judged by industry insiders, including Aarom Wilson from Drum Media and Dan Zilber from FBI radio, beating off seven other local DJs to snare the win and pocket a cool $1,000 prize.

Whoever triumphs on the night will secure their place in the world final alongside the world’s best DJ talent from across the globe, and grab a further cash prize of $2,500. As in the qualifiers, each performer will be judged on creativity, track selection, skills, stage presence and most importantly, their ability to win over the crowd – so show your support for your favourite DJ and hit the dance floor at Home this October – it’s all set to be an unmissable night.

Participants may know all of the DJing tricks and techniques in the book, but if they can’t get the party started and fists in the air, they don’t stand a chance of winning!

Red Bull Thre3Style – Adelaide

2 09 2011

Red Bull Thre3Style is an international DJ contest hitting Australian shores. The competition serves to unearth Australia’s best DJs, who will go head-to-head in the ultimate DJ battle.

Red Bull Thre3Style is an invitation-only DJ competition, which will see five state qualifiers, held in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth throughout August and September. Each qualifier will host eight of the best DJs in that state, battling to make it through to the Australian Red Bull Thre3Style Final, in Sydney in October.

There is one simple rule – the DJs must play at least three genres of music in a 15 minute set, with one simple objective – to rock the house! There are no restrictions on which genres of music are chosen so long as the DJ can make them work together. The DJs are judged by an expert panel consisting of local music industry professionals. The judging criterion includes track-selection, technical skills, originality, creativity and most importantly, the DJ’s ability to bring the house down! It doesn’t matter if they know all the DJing tricks and techniques in the book, if they can’t get everyone on the dance floor, they don’t stand a chance of winning!

The winners from each of the qualifiers will take home $1,000 of cold hard cash and a trip to Sydney, to compete in the Australian Red Bull Thre3Style Final in October. The overall winning Australian DJ will score themselves $2,500 of fresh notes and an all-expenses-paid trip to Vancouver, to complete in the 2011 Red Bull Thre3Style World Final in December.

Punters will be in for a treat, with the competing DJs vying for your support on the dance floor, plus surprise headliners will be turning up the heat making it a night out you won’t regret!

Melbourne’s own mixmaster DJ Flagrant has already served up a fiery cocktail of technical skills and epic track selection to take out first place in Red Bull Thre3style in the Melbourne qualifier. Flagrant was one of eight of Melbourne’s finest DJs showcasing their skills in front of a packed house at favourite music venue, The Billboard.

Brisbane DJ and Born Fresh head honcho DJ Butcher took out the Brisbane stage and DJ Typhonic has also scored a place in the finals. Tonight is Adelaide’s turn. Aside from the eight DJ’s in Adelaide, the one and only Sampology will also be playing a special set. The judges for the Adelaide leg are Jamie Bennett and Leah Mencel. Without further ado, here are the eight finalists for the Adelaide qualifier of Red Bull’s Thre3Style DJ comp:

DJ Faint One
DJ Brad Lee
Loot & Plunder
DJ Ryley
