Skryptcha 2011 Wrap Up

23 01 2012

For Skryptcha, 2011 was a year of travel, experience and studio time –with his head down since early January 2011 working on a new album. All year long Skryptcha has been exchanging with producer from New York called Illmind, who he met up with whilst in the US in April to discuss plans for the album and work on tracks.

During his time abroad, Skryptcha visited places like New Orleans, Memphis & New York, drawing inspiration from the cities. Even though much of his time was spent in the studio, Skryp still found space to tour a large part of the country, playing shows in Perth, Melbourne, Jindabyne & Sydney. Skryptcha also found time to help out of Sydney artist Dutch’s track Best Day feat. The Tongue, and Alise Fedele. You can download Best Day for free below, using the down arrow in the player (100 downloads available).

With contributions from vocalists like Daniel Mifsud, Rachael Berry, DJ Joyride & Bastian Bones, as well as fellow Obese brothers Illy & Spit Syndicate, the new LP will be entitled Mindful.

Spit Syndicate – Exile (Interview)

18 06 2010

Nick Lupi
from the Spit Syndicate catches up with allaussie hip hop to talk about their new release Exile, touring, competing with hip hop legend Ozi Batla plus more:

aahh: Exile has just dropped lads, congrats on the release. Brilliant is something that comes to mind. Tell us a little about the album?
Nick Lupi:
Big ups Jim, thank you – glad you like it. I much prefer to let the music speak for itself rather than try to describe it with words, but in terms of the album, it’s the culmination of a lot of late nights and long studio sessions – myself, Jimmy and Adit all put a lot of work, time and love into it. We’re stoked to have it out there, especially since it had been so long since our last release.

aahh: What were some of the main inspirations behind Exile and how did you draw on these in the creative process?
Nick Lupi: The obvious answer for inspirations behind the albums comes from the experiences that we’ve had over the past two years: traveling overseas, touring the country, real life shit like moving out of home, balancing work, music and study, personal relationships, the general goings on of the world at large. We are firm believers in putting lyricism at the forefront of writing songs – that’s the sort of music we like to listen to, where the words count just as much as the music. We drew on all of the aforementioned experiences that we’ve had over the past two years and wrote the album.

aahh: Starry Eyed is the lead single from Exile, it is also the title of the national tour which we will talk about a bit later on. What was the reason behind picking Starry Eyed for the lead single and tour title? Was it simply because it was your favorite song off the album?
Nick Lupi: I wouldn’t say it’s our favourite song of “Exile” – although we do dig it – it was the lead single because it’s the most (maybe only) radio-friendly song we had on the album. We didn’t make the album with radio songs in mind (something we should probably start doing if we want any serious airplay!). Starry-Eyed was the last song we wrote, it came together in the last few weeks before we had to mix and master the record, Adit came through with this catchy, swinging piano-driven beat and the song was built around that. We named it the Starry-Eyed tour just because the song is enjoying a few spins at the moment on radio.

aahh:
Exile has been described as being a ‘very accessible’ album for even the non hip hop fans? Do you think that this is correct or do you think that Australian Hip Hop has reached a point where people realise that this isn’t just a few Australian guys trying to be American?

Nick Lupi: I think that point was reached a few years ago, I think “The Calling” was probably the album that deaden that stereotype for many mainstream listeners. “Exile” is quite a dense album lyrically but we tried to make the songs easy on the ear as much as possible, so it’s a big compliment to be told it’s described as “very accessible”.

aahh: The album was released on the same day as one of the kings of Australian Hip Hop Ozi Batla’s – Wild Colonial and still managed to debut at #8 on the ARIA charts and #3 on Air. What did you guys think of that?
Nick Lupi: You’re right, Ozi is very much a king of Australian hip-hop – so it’s a bit daunting to be dropping on the same day as him. To have both records drop on the same day and chart within the top 10 is great to see – we were stoked with it, it’s a good look for Sydney hip-hop. Big shout outs and much much respect to Ozi, Sandro and the Elefant Traks crew – they’ve been holding down Sydney and beyond for 10+ years, it’s crazy shit.

aahh: There has been a lot of discussion lately surrounding the term ‘Urban’ and it’s application to the Australian Hip Hop music scene. What is your point of view on this subject and does it at all affect you as a performing artist/crew?
Nick Lupi: I couldn’t care less about what they call Australian hip-hop. I agree the term ‘urban’ is a bit messy and very dated and I can see how people might have a problem with it, but I wouldn’t say it has any sort of effect on us.

aahh: 12 Dates have just been announced for the national Starry-Eyed tour. What are some of your favorite destinations around Australia and who will be some of the support acts?
Nick Lupi:
We had an absolute ball on the last tour we did with the Horrorshow boys, pretty much every date was wicked so it’s hard to pick favourites. Melbourne is always a favourite, Brizzy too, we had an amazing time over on the West Coast last time as well (Mojo’s at Fremantle – god damn!). All will be revealed in the next few days, so I can’t tell you all of them. But the supports for Sydney will be Thundamentals, Skryptcha (overage) and Skryptcha, Daily Meds for all-ages.

aahh: Spit Syndicate are members of the OneDayer Crew which encompasses Adit and Solo from Horrorshow. What’s it been like owning the last 12 months with these two? Especially after their Inside Story release?
Nick Lupi: “Inside Story” has got to be one of the strongest local releases to come out in the past five years, in my opinion (which of course is a little bit biased). It’s a little bit scary being in a crew with Solo and Adit because they are such absolute freaks in what they do, but at the same time I couldn’t be prouder.

aahh:
Triple J recently held a comp in conjunction with M-Phazes and Unearthed, DJ Joyride entered as an emcee, he also features on one track on the album. Quite a talented guy you have behind the decks. Will we see more from Joyride in the future?

Nick Lupi: Man, Joyride is seriously ON SOME SHIT. He’ll be the first to tell you that he couldn’t do a scratch routine to save his life, but is most certainly one of the most talented cats I’ve ever come across. He does try his hand at rapping from time to time but where you’re going to see him shine is with his band, Joyride and the Accidents (Adit is also in this band, so is Jono from Made in Japan). The man is a crazy songwriter and he is going to blow the fuck up, gotta do as many gigs with him as we can before that happens..

Spit Syndicate – Exile May 14th (Starry-Eyed Download)

20 04 2010

Leaving behind the hype and buzz of their ARIA-nominated debut, the long awaited second album from Sydney’s Spit Syndicate is the continuation of the duo’s growth as tastemakers in Australian hip-hop. After a hiatus dotted by real life, touring and overseas travel, Spit Syndicate return with Exile; a rich, progressive sophomore album replete with groove, substance, and the pair’s trademark sleek aesthetic.

Inspired by the clarity of mind borne out of travel, the feeling of suffocation by one’s everyday surroundings and the displacement sometimes required to get right, Exile invites you to a world away from the mundane and uninspired. It pits the listener against the surrounds of comfort and familiarity and supplants it with thrill, excitement, and flirtation; evoking ideas of escape, both physically and mentally.

Nick Lupi (22) and Jimmy Nice (23) have carefully crafted rich, textured songs; catchy melodic lines woven with the lyrical dexterity for which the duo are widely regarded. The pair move seamlessly between self-reflection, triumphant flexing, vivid story-telling, and bleak yet poignant observation, displaying an acute awareness of the road in front of them and the world around them.

The journey is buoyed by the album’s soulful yet ultimately banging production, the bulk of which is handled by Adit (Horrorshow). Adit lends his prodigious talent as the album’s executive producer, resulting in a polished, cohesive body of work: epic yet delicate grooves, live instrumentation and slamming drums. Superproducer M-Phazes also contributes to Exile, as do rising beatsmiths J-Squared (Melb) and Cam Bluff (Bris). Guest vocalists are restricted to Spit Syndicate’s One Day family; the freakishly talented Solo, the ever-so-soulful Joyride (Spit Syndicate’s DJ) and the divine Sarah Corry provide layered, warm and sometimes haunting vocals on Exile.

Touted by hip-hop heads and legends alike as a group to watch when they burst onto the scene, Spit Syndicate display a level of growth in Exile which proves that such praise, hype and expectations were not misplaced. Fresh after taking their notoriously high-energy live show around the country on the wildly successful Inside Story national tour with close friends Horrorshow, Spit Syndicate are poised to take the listener into exile.

Track listing:
01. Exile
02. Crooks and Crimescenes
03. Showtime (ft. Solo)
04. Exhale
05. Starry-Eyed
06. Pretty Girls Make Graves

Horrorshow Inside Story Tour – Melbourne Show Review

21 03 2010

Joey Smiles hits the Horrorshow - Inside Story Tour in Melbourne here’s what he had to say:

Horrorshow and Spit Syndicate took to the stage in Melbourne on Friday night for some unforgettable live hip hop. The sold out show nearly tore the roof off The Evelyn Hotel and was testament to the growing fanbase these groups have been receiving across the country. Doors opened about 9:30pm and Melbourne local Tys opened up with some tight, original raps over some well-known instrumental tracks including Roots Manuva’s Witness The Fitness and DJ Shadow’s chilled masterpiece Midnight In A Perfect World.

Spit Syndicate’s Nick Lupi and Just Enuff were up next. Joined by DJ Joyride, the boys wasted no time getting the crowd into it by playing tracks off their debut album Towards The Light. The venue was definitely not the biggest but the packed in punters were all hyped and hands were in the air from the very beginning. Looking around the room, I was surprised to see so many Melbourne artists in the crowd. Seth Sentry, Muph, Pez, M-Phazes, Geko, Diafrix and Illy all showed up to support the groups and they were not disappointed.
Next up in the set the guys played some new songs from their upcoming sophomore Exile . They played Crooks and Crimescenes first up which had a catchy chorus followed by an ode to graffiti, Kings Way. After a few more tracks and a fresh freestyle, they closed the set with the song Lost Boys and the crowd bounced like they were on pogo sticks.

Horrorshow’s DJ Adit and emcee Solo came on just before midnight and opened with some of their harder tracks like Inside Story and Uplift before playing the more catchy songs like Thoughtcrime, The Show, She and Solo’s heartfelt Walk You Home which went down very well with the ladies – and there were certainly a lot of them there!

Melbournians were treated to a special performance when Horrorshow played a new song from M-Phazes album For What It’s Worth. Other highlights included Waiting for The 5.04, No Rides Left and Truth Be Told. Not long after this, Solo welcomed Spit Syndicate back onstage to do some songs together including a new banger from Exile and the tracks Neighbourhood Hit and Choose None. Melbourne emcee Illy also joined the two groups onstage for the first ever live performance of Red Light, Green Light with all four emcees present.
Horrorshow closed the night with the solid track The Rain around 1:15ish after a long and energetic set. Both groups thanked the crowd and seemed genuinely humbled for the energy Melbourne showed.

Spit Syndicate – The Tongue – Chasm & Vida Update

25 11 2009

Three of Sydneys premier acts are teaming up to see 2009 off with a massive night of slamming hip-hop and reggae-infused jams. On Friday the 18th of December, the Oxford Art Factory will host Spit Syndicate, The Tongue and Chasm & Vida Sunshyne in what is sure to be one of the biggest nights on the local music calendar.

After bursting onto the Australian hip-hop scene last year with an ARIA-nominated album and two national tours, Sydney wonderkids Spit Syndicate have been relatively quiet in 2009 as they prepare their sophomore record. They are breaking their 12-month hiatus with their first headline show of 2009, showcasing some new material as well as rocking the crowd with some established favourites. Accompanied by the larger than life DJ Joyride, the SS live performance involves banging beats, live instrumentation and a whole lot of energy.

The Tongue is one of Sydney’s most celebrated MCs. Initially known for his freestyle/battle skills he was quickly snapped up by iconic hip hop label Elefant Traks and has since released an EP (“Bad Education“), mixtapes and a full length album Shock And Awe. His radio-hits include “The Punch”, “Real Thing”, “Bad Education” and “Animal Crackers”. He has collaborated with the likes of Urthboy, Bertie Blackman, Katalyst, The Bag Raiders, Muph And Plutonic etc and supported international acts such as Dizzie Rascal, Pharoahe Monch and Public Enemy. His latest mixtape “The Tongue Is Dead” can be downloaded for free here and his much-anticipated second album will be released in 2010.

Chasm and Vida Sunshyne have recently released one of 2009s most groundbreaking records, Move, a critically-acclaimed album which traverses the global spectrum of soul, reggae, and hip hop. Chasm Sydney-based producer-extraordinaire Chasm (of Beyond the Beat Tape and Astronomy Class fame) has teamed with -by-way-of-Ghanas Vida-Sunshyne, a powerful and extremely talented performer who has spent the last year touring the world with the Mista Savona Band. Together they are an electric collaboration of musical talent; and their dynamic, genre-smashing live show is an experience not to be missed.
