Additionally you may be able to get your hands on one of the small number of the limited 7″ packs available at Wax Museum Records (Melbourne) released in conjunction with Record Store Day. We first heard a taste of this track in the works way back in April of last year, which you can still check out here. CD, sticker and digital packs still available.
In 2001 Brad Strut released his debut long player The Authentic LP, an album which marked a turning point in local hip hop. allaussie hip hop catch up with Australian legend Brad Strut as he returns home from the UK. Not only does Strut talk about his upcoming release, we also delve head first with Strut into the other projects he has been working on include Ciecmate’s – Chess Sounds Vol. 1.
aahh: After spending a few years over in the UK you’re back in Australia. How did you find the time spent in the UK and are you happy to be back? Strut: To be honest. It did take a little while to readjust back into Melbourne life. I was away for five years and had really gotten used to living in London. So many good times were had in those years abroad. It’s been getting near a year since returning and it’s only just now I can say that I’m back into the rhythm of the city that I’ve always called home.
aahh: What was it like to live in the UK? Personally, I’m grateful to the place for allowing me to exercise my ancestral rights to live and work there. I had some of the best moments of my life in the UK and Europe, wmet some great people, experienced some cool shit. As a Hip Hop fan, I really was in paradise. It seemed like every other week an act I’d been wanting to see live would be coming through, doing shows. It was amazing. As an artist, being based in London allowed me to perform at Hip Hop Kemp in Czech Republic 3 years out of five (attended the other 2/5 ‘cos it’s such a dope weekend.), launch my 2009 release ‘Fallout Shelter’ at the world-famous Jazz Cafe, play dates in places like Spain and Austria, York and Beroun, rock support spots for Guru *RIP*, Immortal Technique and Souls of Mischief, perform in Edinburgh during the festival, work and become good friends with people like Beat Butcha, Chemo, The Last Skeptik, Ghost, Skandal and link with many a UK artist I’d listened to over the years back home. It was a great time, well spent. It was the best experience of my life so far. No doubt.
aahh: You’ve wasted no time in getting busy, we’ll try to cover everything. Let’s talk about this upcoming project with K21, how did it come about and when are we likely to see this little gem drop? I connected with the man (K21) over the internet. He’d send me some beats and I’d sift through and occasionally write to some. I eventually demo’d a joint of his last year in London. We dropped it ‘Position’ as a leak on soundcloud for a week or two to gauge response from some heads and they felt it so…from there we sought about getting some kind of EP worked out. Intentions are for the project, titled ‘Fade To Dust’ to drop in the not too distant future. It’s different from my norm and pretty refreshing. An exciting guest feature will rock heads too. The press of ‘Fade To Dust’ will come in a limited edition box set of assorted goodness. Wax, CD, T’s etc numbered 1-500/500 and iTunes will also be available.
aahh: We’ve just featured an exclusive leak of a track lifted from Ciecmate’s latest album ‘Ciecmate Presents’: Chess Sounds Vol.1′. The track is titled ‘I Need Change’ is on a bit of a different tip. How would you describe the track and what do you think of Ciecmate as an artist? Ciecmate is one of the best artists we got I think. Super skilled in multiple aspects and a stand up person too. His development over the years has always been progressive and it’s really getting to a point now where he’s unfuckwithable. Don’t get me wrong, he always been nice. It’s just now, this year and the foreseeable next few. Dude is kicking ass. ‘Game Over’ was a big record this year in my opinion. The joint we worked for the project was recorded by Chemo in London. Ciecers had sent me some beats and I ended up picking the rockyesque banger, put three 16′s of raw honesty atop it and penned, wrote and sang the hook with a view to Chris getting an appropriately skilled singer to replicate my idea with a better range. I’m happy with how it’s turned out. I’m trying to be as honest as possible as an artist and this song fits within my vision. The hook won’t be everybody’s cuppa tea, though I’m cool with it. The verses and beat are undeniably smashers. Buy the product. Support the artists.
aahh: Another track we’ve recently seen a preview of is titled “Enough Of Me” here you’ve teamed up with Doc Felix for one of his upcoming releases? Similar type of deal. Doc is putting together a project called ‘Guilt by Association’. It’s due out next year. A while back he sent me some beats for his album, I felt that joint straight away. I had it penned and ready but had to delay recording the song as I was about to leave London for South America before coming home to Melbourne. When I got back, I got it done. I’m super happy with that joint too, can’t wait till people get to hear it.
aahh: Just the other day you were announced by Holscope productions as the brother of the lead role in the upcoming Australian film, based in Melbourne titled “Pinball”. How did this part come about and what do you feel about being on the big screen as compared to performing on stage? I ain’t gonna lie, I’m nervous as fuck about being on-screen. Stage feels very natural for me so I’m hoping some of the skill set is transferable. Randomly, an old school basketball friend contacted me on FB, the usual fare, hey mate, how’s life and all of that. As it turns out he makes movies now, videos too, did ‘The Festival Song’ clip of all things. Basically he told me he was working on a movie and asked me initially to write a song for the soundtrack to his movie. I was sent an early script to get a feel of the storyline. I read it and enjoyed it so much I emailed him back saying it was great and that if they had any bit parts I’d be happy to chip in as an extra. The director asked if there was any part in particular I’d like to play and I was thinking *crowds gathers around* part of script. I wrote back ambitiously that I’d love to play Kurt, a main part, ‘cos he’s a character I related to but any involvement would be a great experience. The next thing I know, I’m meeting with the director and lead actor and being offered the part. I’m super excited about the opportunity. The cast they have looks great and the tale, set in Melbourne is gangsta as hell. I get to drink, smoke, drive fast cars, shoot guns and bone a hottie. What more could you want?
aahh: Do you think you’ll be able to get an in with the sound guy and get him to put some of your tracks in the movie? No need. They will be.
aahh: As a member of the highly regarded Lyrical Commission crew, with Trem and Bob Balans how do view that time in your own life looking back? Man I’ve been blessed with good timing and a skill with words over percussion. I’ll forever be grateful for all the fond memories of my time with LC at our peak as a live performing group. We played some amazing shows back in the day. Trailblazed f’real! As a group we put out some dope records. We were there when the scene was in its infancy and we’re still fucken here, still fuckin’ shit up! Although, Bob doesn’t really do music no more, so the likelihood of any sort of live or recorded reunion in its OG format is small. LC will always be tho’. The Trem LP. I see that as LC. My music is LC. Personally, I wouldn’t change anything about LC, Trem, Bob Balans, J-Red, Rob Natural, the legacy, the memories. Nothing. LC for Life.
aahh: ”It’s mastery at its finest form, its like hip hop done to its original blueprint..” was how you described the new Trem album. Can you elaborate on that further? Simply stated, the album now speaks for itself. The video was recorded before the public heard FTTOHNL. It’s all rhetoric now. Proof is in the puddin’ of the Cd into the player. Play pressed, sit back, take it in. It’s mastery of a particular discipline followed to it’s originally intended blueprint. Trem has been my favourite MC since I was sixteen. I’m over 30 now. He’s never wavered in his beliefs on how this music should sound. I’m so happy to see the fruition of the masterpiece.
aahh: You feature on two tracks on the Trem album, firstly Russian Roulette with Kings Konekted and then the track Reminisce. Did you have any objectives heading into the writing of these tracks or did you just want to make some dope hip hop? Trem came at me with the beats and the directives. He had an overall idea of how he wanted these joints to go. ‘Reminisce’ was a no brainer really. Some take it back and recollect some of our earlier memories and lay it on track for eternity type shit. Cement memories music. That REAL shit, y’know?!! ’Russian Roulette’ was to be the connecting of LC and K Double on some roll the dice, spin the barrel, pull the trigger type business. Edgy, hard-hitting, eerie shit that no one can touch music. It’s good that heads who didn’t or don’t know, now know, just how dope Kingz Konekted are. So happy to do my bit on two tracks and be a part of it. A must buy if you haven’t got it yet!
aahh: Mid last year Unkut Recordings released a short couple of videos that was sort of a short documentary on you 2001 game changer ‘The Authentic LP’. Tell us about that and will we ever see a full Strut Documentary released? Josh Davis has been filming me and the crew for near on ten years. He has a cache of tapes and memories that we rarely get a look at. Who knows? Maybe something worthy will come out in a few years. Any nagging requests for a DVD or otherwise should be directed at him. He holds the key. Hahaha…. Add unkutrecordings on YouTube for the latest and greatest, ‘Animal Kingdom’ in particular of which he had a big part to play in. Amazing clip!
aahh: The question on everyone’s lips at the moment is when will we see another straight up Brad Strut solo release and how would you envisage that album taking shape in its sound and delivery? The answer to the question is a definitive yes. Work will commence 2012 on what will most likely be the jewel in the crown of my solo works. A finale of fury. I’m rounding up producers, concepts and general ideas right now. Expect it to be something special. I also have a book in the works about my involvement in the Melbourne and Australian Hip Hop scenes, circles and cliques. Gonna be a cracker.
aahh: Final thoughts comments and shit we’ve missed? I love my Mum and Nan. My partner is a gem. Rest in Positivity Robert Hunter. One Love!
Having dropped her exciting debut album Me, Me, Me and Him: The Secret Life of a Receptionist last year, Melbourne MC Class A is back and shows no sign of slowing down as she reveals new single Never featuring Ishu.
Her last record saw her collaborating with Aussie hip hop heroes M-Phazes, BVA, Urban Monk and Doc Felix, which gained loads of local buzz and saw her truly cement her position within the Australian hip hop scene. She’s shared the stage with the likes of Dilated Peoples, Jean Grae, Talib Kweli, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious) and J-Live, as well as national stalwarts The Hilltop Hoods, Urthboy, Mantra & Ozi Batla. The new track signals the beginning of a new direction for Class A, with a shady, moody electro beat coupled with Class A’s trademark, mellifluous flow. The track also features Ishu, with whom Class A is working on a new EP with. Watch this space…
“She presents a cool style to this scene with the ability to chop and change between rapping and singing, boasting and being insightful and being playful and serious. Her strength is in her versatility which, I feel, will overshadow a lot of other MCs, male and female.” – Triple J, Hip Hop Show’s Hau Latukefu
Local hip hop artist Requiem is moving forward into the digital era. Instead of swimming against the current the musician has decided to re-release his music online for free download. The rural Victorian born MC has uploaded his debut album Grassroots Anarchy onto popular music website Bandcamp for fans to download and share.
Grassroots Anarchy was released in 2009 to critical acclaim and helped the young wordsmith make his mark on the local scene. “Requiem could be one of the greats of the most emerging hip-hop scene in the world today,” said RapReviews.com head writer Steve Juon. The album was a socio-political protest record about the state of the world at large and the struggle of independent artists in the modern music scene. Three years later Requiem said he wants to move on to new projects and let a wider audience hear his first album before dropping the follow-up. “I’m proud of that album but I’ve moved on to make even better music so I’m letting anyone who hasn’t yet heard the debut do so,” he said. “But I still have love for physical copies of albums and I am not trying to cheat anyone who supported me by buying a copy, so the actual CD is still for sale.”
Those interested can now choose to either get the digital version online for free in high quality mp3 or order a copy of the album from Requiem’s website. Up and coming Perth producer Eddy Extract has lent his talent to an ill remix of lead single Apeshit! and this is included on the re-release online.Requiem is currently working on his new release Digital Blues, an EP with production exclusively from well-known UK producer Beat Butcha. “I’m hoping to put out Digital Blues early next year,” he said.
Executed by Full Clip (Heata & Discourse)Midlife featuring Joyride produced by DJ Bonez taken from the album Biaslife. Bias B has been an unrelenting presence on the Australian Hip Hop scene spanning over decades. The Melbourne Hip Hop innovator returns to the mic with another tenacious testament to his craft in the form of Biaslife.
The 5th solo release to his name, Biaslife solidly exhibits a maturity and discernment only obtainable after time, persistence, and unrequited dedication to one’s art. Bias has come a long way since his pioneering debut album Beezwax in 1998, just like his local scene. Although Aussie Hip Hop is expanding and changing around him, Bias still continues to hold his own as one of the first, and one of the best.
The album credits an array of seasoned artists such as Lazy Grey and Len One, Bigfoot, Ciecmate, Fluent Form, Maundz, and Eloqour. The soothing vocals of Joyride and Tali are featured, as well as production mastery from the legendary Lazy Grey, DJ Bonez, Doc Felix, The Statesmen, Aux One, Geko and Discourse. Midlife, the first single from the album, is illustrative of Bias’s constant battle to find equilibrium between family and artistry. With outstanding production by DJ Bonez accompanied by the soulful voice of Joyride on the hook, Midlife epitomizes that classic Bias B sound.
In comparing Bias’s past works to Biaslife, the new album stands alone when it comes to subject matter. Steering away from a comfort zone of local Hip Hop politics, Bias B has chosen this time to delve into broader themes. Exploring world issues in the Doc Felix produced When I Sleep and reflecting on the tragedy of suicide in How Did I End Up Here, whilst also expressing a love for life in tracks like In Love With The Music and Whenever You Need Me (dedicated to the mother of his two children). The release of Biaslife will be accompanied by a national tour from June through to August.
Track Listing 1. In Love with the Music 2. Midlife 3. When I Sleep 4. How Did I End up Here 5. That Feeling 6. Melbourne City 7. Here I Come 8. Drop a Thought 9. Runnin’ the Track 10. Rap Life 11. Whenever you Need me 12. The Last Song

Here is the brand new clip for A-Dictions track Lost For Words taken from the 2010 Release Walkin’ Alone, distrbiuted by Obese Records. Find our album review below and the link for the interview below that.
Walkin Alone is the title to Melbourne duo emcee’s Breach and Boltz. Many will recognise these two, with previous mixtape releases under their belt, some may also remember Boltz’ classic Wishlist release from years back. Walkin Alone is an album which combines the observations of city life, relationships, the future and even the 7 deadly sins into a hip hop painted outline of Boltz and Breachs reality. Walkin Alone the title track to the album has Breach and Boltz asking the hip hop community to join them on a journey or they will be going it alone. Lewis One provides the beat to the lead single and was the answer to our A-Diction – Walkin Alone competition. We had three copies to giveaway and those winners have been announced below.
As the level of pressure increases on groups to produce quality debut albums, no shortcuts we made on Walkin Alone. The list of producers include some of Australia’s best, M-Phazes, Jase, Lewis One, Mules and Whisper. Behind the mic the guys are joined by a range of respected emcee’s with Haunts and G-Force making memorable contributions; in addition to Scott Burns, Billy Bunks, Whisper, Raven and Fraksha who appear on the posse cut track Capital Vices. We should also mention the amazing vocals from Vida Sunshyne and Bekah.
“Routine is another word for habit,
do something enough and you’ll forget why you began it
God damn it now your old and gray
and still searching for a dream that’s been thrown away.
Kanyes definition of a man, is everything I’m not made me everything I am,
but as for me I thinking more honestly everything I’m not,
is everything I wanna be.
My advice is life your life, never let em say you’re not doing it right….”.
As we progress through the album it’s clear that Boltz and Breach have paid considerable attention to the overall flow and structure of the album. Each and every track builds on the last, offering something new and exciting for your ears enjoyment. It’s with this dynamic flow that A-Diction are able to present an amazing ‘walk’ throughout the album and the lives of Breach and Boltz. We found ourselves wanting to listen to the album from start to finish every time, rather than jumping in at say track 4 then skipping 5 songs to our favorites. Obviously there are some clear highlights including the track Consistent feat.Bekah, with Mules delivering some absolute fire on the beat. It’s then backed up by an outstanding M-Phazes produced track titled One Fact. Both tracks will be keeping those chriopractors in business over the next few months.
“I manufacture tracks proper not just a, monotonous records that get forgotten in seconds.
See its a habit of my that in the back of my mind,
I got these thoughts and they just happen to rhyme,
to have you clapping in time, I bless you with the rapping that’s fine,
I’ll come to your rescue like your were trapped in a mine…”.
The humorous Wingman“goes out to single guys” and has A-Diction discussing the plan of attack for any successful Friday and Saturday night. Whisperdoes a brilliant job on the beat with the bouncy feel tying in nicely to the theme of the track. Next track worthy a mention is the Drop The Beat (Remix), featuring G-Force and Vida Sunshyne. This is one of the most impressive remixes we have heard in a long time. Enough said?
Jase delivers with a funky soul filled beat on Ladies and Gentlemen. We also pay the “That’s What She Said” joke….nice work fellas. There has been much talk about the posse cut track Capital Vices (prod. M-Phazes) feat. Fraksha, Billy Bunks, Scott Burns, Whisper and Raven. We all love a posse track but the way A-Diction tackled this one, was as an original concept as we’ve seen. Each of the 7 seven rappers undertake one of the 7 Deadly Sins with each spitting a verse to great results. This will surely go down as one of the best posse tracks of the last few years. Mules exceptional production work continues on the track Just You, which sees Breach and Boltz slowing things up with a nice soulful joint about the inner workings of friendships.
The ease for which A-Diction are able present a vast range of styles and pull off each and everyone is a testament to the skill and hard work that the guys have put in to prepare for this debut. At no point did the sound seem out of their depth, in fact the album was quite inviting and appraochable….sorta like that really hot chick who’s easy to get along with. The track Unbalanced is a dark tale of humanity and the pain that ‘some’ share throughout the world. Trillholds it down for his only produced track on the album and once again A-Diction continue to deliver some great verses:
“The 3rd world starves the situations hectic,
while western obesity’s become an epidemic,
the greed and gluttony I’ve seen in my country
to me, it just seems to be a beast that is ugly.
Seems strange that we,
can still find things to complain about and its so crazy how,
we stress over the rent or new mortgage,
but we aint never had to worry bout a food shortage….”
Backed with some impressive artwork by renowned illustrator R. Lyons, great beats from Australia’s best producers and also the dynamic duo that is A-Diction,Walkin Alone is set to awaken the sleepers.A-Diction deliver an amazing album that’s meant to be listened too and enjoyed. The guys have grabbed 2010 by the scruff of the neck, slapped that bitch up and left a nice big Walkin’ Alone imprint on her check. (We don’t condone violence against numbers). We really can’t fault this effort – all in all get some! We score A-Diction’s – Walkin Alone 4.3 out of 5.
After 2 years of hosting Melbourne’s hip-hop video magazine The Burning Underground and gaining local praise for his group 27 Politics, the single letter emcee aptly named T is set to take centre stage for his solo debut.
Titled The Place Where I Wannabe, T takes listeners on a sound scaped journey though 7 songs and collaborates with close friends along the way. While maintaining his aggressive delivery we do see a more conscious and politically aware T and this is no more apparent then on Money Women Power Greed, whereby fellow MC’s Vishus and Gzutek appear to speak their minds on the titles topic.
However, it’s at this point where real life takes a backseat and a surreal realm starts to seep though. Doc Felix delivers us a warm blend of cuts though-out the release and additional vocals by Mz. Wood & Grinny only help but accentuate the unique sound.
From start to finish production is handled entirely by multi-talented Mr Boomkat and his left field approach to crafting beats leaves us with a funk driven boom bap musical.
Tracklist: 01. Intro 02. I’m Back 03. Damage (Feat. Mz Wood) 04. Money Women Power Greed (Feat. Vishus & Gzutek) 05. Understand The Music 06. Yesterday (Feat. Grinny) 07. Place Where I Wannabe
