Horrorshow – Unfair Lottery

8 05 2013

You could forgive Horrorshow the temptation to return as if in triumph with their new single Unfair Lottery. Their consistent outshining of expectations to date suggests something special in the chemistry between lyricist Solo and producer Adit

horrorshow unfair lottery

Where others may be swept up in delusions of grandeur, Horrorshow dig deeper into our collective psyche, looking for pre-polished signs of life. Unfair Lottery finds them with a renewed sense of purpose, crafting a thoughtful song tackling the idea of privilege—a theme often overlooked in local hip hop culture. This is not a song of guilt, it’s a refreshingly honest play on being “male, middle class and white”.

Adit acts as a conductor employing glissando-laced strings and operatic sopranos with a cinematic array of samples and live instrumentation. He’s a producer inspired, credited with the bulk of Spit Syndicate’s recent album and truly a studio fiend in great form. This is the first taste of the highly anticipated third album from Horrorshow.

Dr. Seuss Meets Elefant Traks

19 09 2012

Featuring over 25 musical performers onstage from The Herd, Hermitude, Sietta, Joelistics, Unkle Ho, Urthboy, The Tongue, Jimblah, Jaytee of The Last Kinection and more, Australia’s renowned musical collective Elefant Traks are taking over the Graphic circus with a tribute inspired by the whimsical spirit and imagery of Dr. Seuss.

Throughout over 60 years of children’s classics such as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the wildly imaginative and surrealist universe of Dr. Seuss has enthralled generations. He continues to be one of the world’s most instantly recognisable and best loved visual storytellers.

‘All ready to put up the tents for my circus… and now comes an act of enormous enormance! No former performer’s performed this performance!’ – excerpt from Dr. Seuss’ If I Ran the Circus

Since making their live debut over a decade ago, Elefant Traks artists have entertained far and wide, capping off 2011 with Hermitude winning triple j’s Video of the Year. Australia’s most innovative label will now play with the iconic work of Dr. Seuss in a specially commissioned show for Graphic 2012.

Maintaining their motto to make ‘challenging yet adventurous’ music, the Elefant Crew are set for a fresh injection of Dr. Seuss’ prescription for fun in this fantastically imaginative performance.

Elefant Traks Welcomes New Signing Jimblah

10 09 2012

The most striking thing about Jimblah is not his ability to sing, rap and produce beats, it’s the eyebrow-raising fact he does them all so well. His flow alone outshines most MCs, but his tone and singing style are so memorable, so drenched in soul, it’s music for the heart.

Then consider his signature dusty, chopped-up melodic productions and you begin to understand Jimblah is truly a special talent. Elefant Traks have watched him with great admiration and believe his album Face the Fire should be in everyone’s collection. It transcends hip hop, soul or indie music scenes, or even radio; it’s an album with the rare quality of being able to hang back a little, as though not desperate for your attention, knowing that you’ll be drawn in before long. It’s that good.

So Elefant Traks did the right and proper thing, they’re releasing it for free at www.jimblah.com. Jimblah was the inaugural winner of the Hilltop Hoods Initiative and was last week’s triple j Unearthed Artist of the Week.

‘Since dropping one of my favourite local tracks of the year ‘Capitol City’, Jimblah continues growing and progressing. I can’t wait to see where he takes his music next’ — Suffa (Hilltop Hoods).

Jimblah’s new record will be released on Elefant Traks in 2013.

Sky’High “Forever Sky’High” Album Launch Tour

30 06 2012

Grindin’ & Elefant Traks invite you to the live experience of Forever Sky’High, the debut album from Sky’High, the most unexpected signing to the Elefant Traks label yet. Some people just won’t get it. They’ll see the rough and miss the diamond.

Others will hear the raw aggression and recognise the ideas, hooks and melodies are undeniable proof of one of the most exciting voices to emerge in local hip hop yet. Sky’High diversifies and illuminates the possibilities of what’s going on here, giving volume to an Australian voice the mainstream generally shut down. The creative fearlessness of Sky’High’s debut not only hits the mark but crashes through it. Whether it’s the grime of Reign, or the hip hop of Don Dada or Forever Gone, she remorselessly smashes it outta the park. But it’s when Sky reveals her vulnerability in the brutal yet achingly beautiful Nuclear Love that the listener stops dead in their tracks.

This is why else world-renowned NZ producer P-Money pursued her—the first Australian act he’s overseen. It’s why Elefant Traks got on deck and why Duck Down artist David Dallas collaborated on the album. It’s also why Rolling Stone and Sydney Morning Herald pinpointed her out as an artist to watch.
Sky’High is not the softly-spoken female you’re expecting. There is no other genre that could unearth someone as special as her. Uncompromisingly tough and en- dearingly cheeky, Sky’High’s invigorating talent will disarm you and challenge your perceptions.
What do you see in the rough?

Tour Dates

Thursday 5th July – Coniston Lane, Brisbane
