Urthboy – Smokey’s Haunt

17 07 2012

Urthboy has announced his much anticipated fourth album will be titled Smokey’s Haunt and is set for release on October 12. The bold first single, Naïve Bravado featuring Daniel Merriweather, has seen some heavy support at radio and was named iTunes Single Of The Week—raking in over 30,000 downloads in under a week, and quickly spiking to #1 most added (all indie) track at radio.

Although Hermitude and Count Bounce have been exclusive producers of all previous Urthboy material, Smokey’s Haunt is the first album where they’ve co-produced the entire album. The chemistry between all parties was electric, resulting in an invigorated sound and fresh spirit. Apart from putting the finishing touches on his new album, Urthboy has also signed a global publishing deal with the legendary Alberts Music. The Naïve Bravado Tour kicks off late August, where he will be joined by long-time collaborators Elgusto (Hermitude) and Jane Tyrrell for what promises to be an electrifying live show.

The tour’s main support is The Last Kinection—one of the true voices of Indigenous Australian hip hop. They will be joined on selected dates by triple j favourites Yung Warriors, Brisbane’s rising star Rainman and more. See listing below for full details. Tickets are on sale now.

allaussie hip hop ‘cover art of the month’: Hermitude – Hyperparadise

4 02 2012

HyperParadise is Hermitude hitting the bullseye of their artistic vision, a beautifully inventive record of future beats and electronica. It’s not just their meticulousness in production and musicianship, it’s the passion and love they have for instrumental music that makes them so special.

The songs are bubbling with personality: choruses leap out of songs demanding an emotional response, differing for each listener. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine the more notably adventurous R&B/soul vocalists wishing they could get their hands on the likes of All of You and HyperParadise. Speak of the Devil has been one of the standout dancefloor tunes of 2011; thrashed by Australian radio; and winner of triple j’s 2011 J Award for Australian Music Video of the Year.

It was also #9 in Rage’s Top 50 videos of 2011 and nominated for FBi’s SMAC Awards (Single and Video). Should we mention the international news yet? No. Save that one. Hermitude have nurtured an affectionate and fiercely loyal audience over the years, commanding respect from the best in the beats business (DJ Krush, Glitch Mob). They’re in a perfect position to take it up a few notches with the release of HyperParadise.

2012′s first allaussie hip hop ’cover art of the month’ features none other than Hermitude’s – Hyper Paradise. Released yesterday through Elefant Traks, the cover art was designed and produced by a collaboration of fine designers including Claire Nakazawa, Lucia Giuffre, Catherine McElhone & layout by DH. The work was a collage, aiming to create a tropical ‘hyper’ paradise.

Hermitude – Speak of the Devil Tour

12 09 2011

Hermitude are set to turn heads with their most playfully infectious song to date, Speak Of The Devil. With its contorting synth lines, fun chorus and slamming drums, it perfectly captures the energy and joy of the band. Featuring the voice of Sydney artist Chaos Emerald in Speak Of The Devil, Hermitude have developed a dedicated following for their pumping live shows and monstrously positive vibes. Catch them when they launch Speak Of The Devil in November – December.

Hermitude formed in 2001 when Blue Mountains duo Luke Dubs (Luke Dubber) and Elgusto (Angus Stuart) paired up with a shared love of beats and turntablism. The offspring of professional musicians, they’d performed together in jazz and funk bands since their early teens. Hermitude’s first EP was the vinyl-only Imaginary Friends out through Elefant Traks. They followed this up with their debut album in 2003 – the critically adored Alleys to Valleys. It established Hermitude’s reputation for impeccable production – esteemed radio figure Tim Ritchie called it “One of the best hip hop/breaks releases I’ve ever heard”.

Their second album Tales of the Drift followed in 2005 after numerous tours and support slots. Their Cuban-influenced rhythms (Elgusto undertook percussion studies in Cuba as a teen) had blended elegantly with their formal jazz and classical background breathing new life into their instrumental hip hop sound. The first single Fallen Giants took triple j by storm and sat on high rotation for months.  By now Hermitude had established their reputation for brilliant studio productions with an engaging and innovative live show – incorporating a confident, almost effortless musicianship with a deft grasp of technology. Over the next few years they toured Asia, Europe and the USA playing with underground hip hop artists and electronic acts (Krush, Kentaro, Aceyalone, Dizzee Rascal). In 2007 they released the Rare Sightings EP before embarking on their third album, Threads in 2008. Hermitude’s sound progressed into more electronic territory, embracing instrumental hip hop’s electronic relative ‘future beats’. Artists such as Glitch Mob and DJ Krush started dropping Hermitude songs in live sets. The first single on their fourth record dropped in early 2011 – the slamming Get in My Life. They followed this in September 2011 with the Summery monster Speak of the Devil. Hermitude’s fourth album will be released in Feb 2012.

Elefant Traks Welcome New Signing: Joelistics

9 03 2011

Elefant Traks welcome new signing: Joelistics!! His debut solo album is called Voyager and it drops May 6. From his time with TZU, Joelistics is regarded as one of the most charismatic frontmen in hip hop, one of the best freestylers to have never battled; a true storyteller influenced by shoegazer electronica and folk as much as classic boom bap hip hop.

Self-produced and written in France, Mongolia, China and Australia, Voyager taps into themes of travel, modern world paranoia and growing older.
The first single airs late March.  Elefant Traks believe he’s got an absolutely cracking record on his hands and we tend to agree.
………..
“We’ve been mates for ages – we’ve shared a lot of creative, outrageous and funny times – it feels like Joelistics is already part of the fam, he’s a natural fit for Elefant Traks and the album is sick.” Ozi Batla – The Herd
“I’m genuinely excited about him joining forces with ET as a fan more than anything. He’s always had mad charisma and I’ve no doubt that will shine through on the record.” Solo – Horrorshow
“Joelistics… talented, funny, wiseguy.” Elgusto – Hermitude

Joelistics grew up in Sydney, the offspring of a Chinese Australian father and an Anglo Australian mother, playing drums in punk and funk groups, but drawn to hip hop with its outspoken politics and ad hoc sonic cannibalism. At the beginning of the new millennium, Joelistics took the first of a series of ‘voyages’ around Australia, working as a fruit picker, visiting hippie festivals and hitch hiking across the country, eventually settling in Melbourne where he discovered a city going through a creative boom.In 2002 he founded TZU alongside Count Bounce, Yeroc and Pasobionic, signing to Liberation records the same year. Earning their stripes on the live circuit, TZU built a solid reputation on the back of their up-beat party rhymes, joining acts like The Herd, Hilltop Hoods and Bliss n Eso, as a vanguard of the second generation of Australian hiphop forging an identity both artistically and commercially.

After three ambitious records, multiple award (AMP, J Award) nominations, countless festivals and tours, TZU decided to take a breather. Joel embarked upon another voyage, living in Shanghai and Beijing; travelling through Mongolia; and eventually settling in Paris for six months. In between writing for online travel sites and teaching English, he began work on his debut solo album, Voyager.

Armed with a laptop, he wrote all the music on old headphones whilst riding the Trans-Mongolian railway, transiting through airports; and a winter in a one bedroom flat in the Montmartre district of Paris. In 2010 he returned to Australia and moved between Sydney and Melbourne putting the final touches on the album, inking a deal with Elefant Traks in early 2011. Joelistics has always drawn on influences from a wide variety of sources. As a solo artist his sound is grounded in the boom bap of hip hop whilst keenly revisiting his love of beat poetry, shoe gazer electronica and folk to create an album that is both introspective and electrifying. Entirely self produced with few guests, Voyager concentrates on themes of travel, modern world paranoia and growing older. Self-described as the ‘come down record of my late twenties’, his self-deprecating view allows the listener to discover for themselves the joyous optimism and redemption that co-pilots the album.

Indent 10 Year Tour Video – Featuring Urthboy

29 11 2010

If you missed out on the shows, or you just really don’t know what happened- Indent put on an all ages tour of Regional NSW to celebrate its tenth year of supporting the all ages music scene in NSW. They toured with Urthboy, along with Jane and Elgusto, and started the adventure in Newcastle. From there it was all hands on deck, making sure that we got to each town on time and all of that. Cessnock followed, and then Sydney on the Sunday. Tamworth was great fun- who knew the ‘ol country music town was full of hip hop heads.
Byron Bay greeted us with beautiful weather and an awesome turnout of young peeps, which was backed up by a fantastic show on the coastal town of Forster. The cold weather in Bathurst didn’t stop people from staying indoors, and the show in Wagga Wagga was more or less the same deal.
The final two shows on the south coast were set to be the biggest and the best, as these were the final shows of the tour.
In true south coast style, the crowd pulled through and filled out the Showground Pavillion down in Bega- an incredible night. And what better way to send out the tour than to pull out all stops for the final show down in Batemans Bay.

The Tongue – Alternative Energy

10 09 2010

Alternative Energy is the title to your second full length LP dropping today. How are you feeling about the finished product?
I feel like its my best work to date. I’m working with the best producers, I’m writing the best songs of my career, all the guests brought their A-game….I’m really proud of this album…

It’s a slick-looking package for sure, is there any meaning behind the title Alternative Energy?
The human race is headed for disaster….I don’t believe in that 2012 crap but all the signs suggest we need to change our ways. If we don’t find a better way to think/live/treat each other than we are in big trouble. We need to switch from greedy to considerate, from racist to accepting. We need to look for new ways of existing because our current approach is simply not working. Each one of us needs to find our own Alternative Energy.

You’ve just released an amazing film clip for the lead single The Show. What was the creative motivation behind this clip?
That video was a collaboration between myself and the director Prad Deep. We only had 8 days to script, organize and shoot the video…the fact that it turned as great as it did is a testament to Prad and his team’s professionalism. Their company is called Artifact (www.artifactdigital.com.au) They also did the Spit Syndicate “Starry-Eyed” clip, “Nothing To Loose” by Gully Platoon, “I Go” by Jess Harlen and the Astronomy Class”Where You At?”  video. Prad is going to be a big director in the future…I can feel it.

We really must mention the beats on Alternative Energy. We see tracks from Dizz 1, P Major, M-Phazes and Kid Fiction, but it’s Elgusto that we see you teaming up with most on AE. What did you think Elgusto could bring to your album?
El Gusto is simply a freak. If you listen to his catalog of music…all the Hermitude albums, all the production he’s done he’s done for Urthboy…there are so many styles, so many fresh sounds. I feel like he is truly original with his production. He’s definitely in the top 3 producers in Australia.
I have nothing but praise for all the other producers, none of whom I had worked with before. They all gave me amazing music, no question. I could write an each on why each of them is dope.
The aim of this album was for every beat to sound nothing like ‘Aussie hip hop’ as we know it. I feel like there are too many style of hip hop which are ignored here in Australia…theres too much ‘boom-bap’….while I’m a fan of Bias B, Pegz, Hilltops etc I don’t want the average listener to confuse me with them. I want my own sound. Think about it: If Dizzie Rascal rapped over standard ‘rap’ beats he would never have the success he’s enjoyed…it was by finding his own sound that he separated himself from the pack. I feel like we hit the mark with production on this album…its something fresh for your ears.
I wanted to make a record that would stimulate the listeners body and mind….kinda like when a girl talks dirty into your ear while giving you a really good hand-job.

Was it your idea to put the lyrics in the booklet. We see alot of artist shying away from that these days under fear of lyrical scrutiny.
I express myself through my writing…so I’d like people to be able to read what I write. If you hear a song on the radio once or twice you might miss the more subtle lyrics…if you are at a live show it’s often hard to hear every word. By giving you a lyric-booklet you can see exactly what I’m saying and what I stand for.

The track Proof Of Life gets right on that soulful tip, we loved your approach. How did you feel heading in to the booth to record this one?
Proof Of Life was scary for me to do- obviously I’m not a trained singer nor do I consider myself to be a particularly talented singer. But there are plenty of great artists out there who have average singing voices (Bob Dlyan, Kid Cudi, Tom Waits, Jay from Frenzel Rhomb). They may not sound sweet or hit every note but you can hear the passion and the emotion in their songs.
The music industry is full of people with perfect voices and nothing to say.
Also- I feel like Australian hip hop needs more people pushing the envelop…artists shouldn’t be scared to experiment and be themselves…thats how we progress. Too many dudes are putting on an act.
“Alternative Energy” is a cool album because its honest….on some tracks I’m taking the piss, on others I’m damn near crying in the booth rhyming about homelessness. Ask El Gusto…I was choked up while recording “What A Day” because the emotions are all real. People will have a much better sense of who “The Tongue” is after hearing this record.

Oxymoron is one of the stand out tracks lyrically. Here is an example for our readers: “Terrified of cancer, kill for a tan. Hate slave labour still buy the brand”.  Do you draw motivation from these types of social and political issues?
That track is about how ridiculous life is. We are all walking contradictions. I AM terrified of getting cancer but I try to get a tan in summer. I don’t eat burnt toast but I do smoke and drink…it makes no sense. We should all be able to admit how back to front our logic is….a lot of people who want to ‘save the whales’ are happy to eat deep-fried chicken.

You just got back from an overseas trip to New York City, what was the highlight?
The whole city is one big highlight. It really does make Sydney seem very tame and conservative in comparison. Every day there is something amazing going on- you go to a bowling alley and Questlove (from The Roots) is djing in the corner…you go to Central Park on a Sunday and Public Enemy are doing a free concert…people there really know how to have fun. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

I think people would have seen the vision by now, for those who haven’t, at your album announcement things got a little heated and you threw down with some jerk reporter. Will there be any repercussions from this?
He was a dickhead and I’m glad I popped his eyeball. The court case is next month…so lets wait and see what happens….although considering I just admitted I’m guilty (and its on tape) I’m pretty sure I’m going to jail.

Final words?
The single launch for “The Show” will be at the Sandringham Hotel next Friday the 17th in Newtown, Sydney.
We are announcing the national tour next week…I can’t give you details just yet but there’s a good chance it will be a co-headline tour with a big act on Obese Records…we’re coming to all capital cities

1.Alternative Energy is the title to your second full length LP dropping today. How are you feeling about the finished album man?
I feel like its my best work to date. I’m working with the best producers, I’m writing the best songs of my career, all the guests brought their A-game….I’m really proud of this album…

2.It’s a slick looking album for sure, is there any meaning behind the title Alternative Energy? Maybe some cosmic undertones here?
The human race is headed for disaster….I don’t believe in that 2012 crap but all the signs suggest we need to change our ways. If we don’t find a better way to think/live/treat each other then we are in big trouble. We need to switch from greedy to considerate, from racist to accepting. We need to look for new ways of existing because our current approach is simply not working. Each one of us needs to find our own Alternative Energy.

3.You’ve just recently released your film clip to the single The Show, which features some colourfully masked luchadors.
4. We really must mention the beats on Alternative Energy. We see tracks from Dizz 1, P Major, M-Phazes and Kid Fiction but it’s Elgusto that we see you teaming up with most on AE. What did you think Elgusto could bring to your album? Innervision beat just makes us want to break out all the crazy bboy moves.

I feel like we hit the mark with production on this album…its something fresh for your ears.

5. Did you want an album that  people could get their groove on to, or was that just more of a result of the guys you were collabing with?
I wanted to make a record that would stimulate the listeners body and mind….kinda like when a girl talks dirty into your ear while giving you a really good hand-job.

6. Another that plays a big part in the album is the don Joyride, do you feel a bit ripped off that he is featuring on another album dropping today? Nah just kidding what was it like recording with this guy? We keep hearing stories of how talented this dude is.
Joyride is the Nate Dogg of Australian hip hop. He’s a quadruple threat ; singer, rapper, DJ, producer. And he can play a bunch of different instruments…and at 6’10 he doubles as a bodyguard.

7. The album has been described as political, witty, poetic and globally minded and we’d have to agree.

8. The track Proof Of Life is gets right on that soulful tip. The whole album seems like you’ve just tackled it from a whole different angle from previous efforts, did you go into this album wanting to make something completely different from what you’ve done previously or does it come down to more of and evolution for yourself?
Proof Of Life was scary for me to do- obviously I’m not a trained singer nor do I consider myself to be a particularly talented singer. But there are plenty of great artists out there who have average singing voices (Bob Dlyan, Kid Cudi, Tom Waits, Jay from Frenzel Rhomb). They may not sound sweet or hit every note but you can hear the passion and the emotion in their songs.
The music industry is full of people with perfect voices and nothing to say.

Also- I feel like Australian hip hop needs more people pushing the envelop…artists shouldn’t be scared to experiment…thats how we progress.

9. The creative approach to the track Wargames see’s you and Joyride put a fresh spin on the old going out on the town type track. MIA’s hot right? HA Maybe a future team up?
MIA has got her thing going on…but to be honest thats kind of a personal joke as I was seeing a girl who looked like MIA for a while. I don’t know if she’s heard “Wargames” yet…

10. One thing we really enjoyed about the album is that you haven’t at all lost your classic sense of humor. It’s what made us fans, when we first caught you back in the BFS days. Do you think it’s important in life not to take yourself and life to seriously?
I think its important for artist to be themselves.

11. Oxymoron is one of the stand out tracks lyrically. Here are some lines “Terrified of cancer, kill for a tan. Hate slave labour still buy the brand” then further on in the track This is my home but I’m still an invader”. Do you find alot of motivation from these types of social and political issues?
That track is about how ridiculous life is. We are all walking contradictions. I AM terrified of getting cancer but I try and get a tan in summer. I don’t eat burnt toast but I do smoke and drink…it makes no sense. We should all be able to admit how back to front our logic is….a lot of people who want to ‘save the whales’ are happy to eat deep fried chicken.

12. You just got back from NYC, how was the trip any highlights?

13. There were recently reports in the media, and I think people would have seen the vision. At your press conference things got a little heated and you threw down with some reporter who just had no idea. Will there be any reprocutions from this?
He was a dickhead and I’m glad I popped his eyeball. The court case is next month so lets wait and see what happens….although considering I just admitted I’m guilty (and its on tape) I’m pretty sure I’m going to jail.

The Tongue – Alternative Energy

24 08 2010

Some are content to watch on as life unfolds: happy to experience the movement from a distance. Others burst into life, like a reptile breaking open its own shell in order to get things happening. The latter would aptly describe The Tongue, and this is his brand new album Alternative Energy.

Blessed with an infectious style and charisma, The Tongue has a knack for creating ‘sticky’ phrases that stay with you – wrapped inside hooky flows that suck you in. His style has an elegant complexity, dispatching pop culture references with acerbic wit, speaking straight to true hip hop heads but connecting with the casual listener. Bold enough to carry a flashy bravado but wise enough to temper it with sincerity: not all emo, nor all ego.

The Tongue has always promised much; his versatility as a freestyle MC is deservedly celebrated: he’s a very likeable frontman with a natural live presence. Alternative Energy is the album that captures The Tongue’s thirst for life’s curiosities and the vibrancy of his personality. Production comes courtesy of some of Australia’s best: Elgusto, M-Phazes, Dizz-1 and others have created a crisp and contemporary backdrop that moves haphazardly through bright and menacing moods. The Tongue talks of love and frustration; politics and bullshit; coming up and down in a city of sin. Lending vocals to the album are Gift of Gab, Urthboy, Ngaiire and Joyride.

The Tongue – Alternative Energy Press Conference

8 08 2010

It’s safe to say that this past week has been more, err interesting than most, and we respectfully request you keep in mind Elefant Traks’ generally good reputation as we pass on some less than flattering news.

The internet chatter circulating from an ‘incident’ that took place at The Tongue’s album announcement press conference has forced us to make a public statement addressing the issue. Elefant Traks has footage from the press conference that we have made available below in the interest of transparency. We unequivocally condemn any musician resorting to violence against music journalists and The Tongue has been disciplined for his behaviour.
The Tongue has been sent to New York City to receive advice from the Temple of Hip Hop, and therefore won’t be available for comment. He will be making a statement when he launches his first single, The Show on September 17 at The Sandringham Hotel, Newtown.

The Tongue – The Show

The Tongue – The Show (Alternative Energy Sept 10)

20 07 2010

The Tongue climbs back into the ring with the announcement of his explosive new single The Show.

Widely regarded as one of Australia’s most imaginative and skillful emcees, The Show mixes his signature sharp word-play with humour in equal measure to give us a taste of what we can expect from his forthcoming and most accomplished record to date Alternative Energy (Out September 10).

The beat is a big-swinging funk bombshell produced by Elgusto (Hermitude, Urthboy) who doesn’t seem to be capable of putting a foot wrong. A bold and energetic music video is in production to accompany the single and will be hitting screens shortly.
