Big Village – Big Things Vol. 2

10 07 2012

Big Village Records are genuinely thrilled to announce the forthcoming release of Big Things Vol Two. Dropping August 10th, Big Things Vol Two is the labels latest compilation and features all exclusive new tunes from Big Village founding members Tuka (Thundamentals), Ellesquire, Daily Meds, True Vibenation and Loose Change, as well as collab tracks and solo tunes from Reverse Polarities, Suburban Dark, Rapaport, Klue and Tenth Dan.

In what can only be described as a gargantuan undertaking by anyone’s standards, to celebrate, they’re taking the whole damn label on the road for a national tour to launch said album– that’s nearly 20 of Sydney’s finest MCs, DJs and Producers.

Big Label: Since its beginnings in 2010, Big Village has been a collectively run and forward thinking label that has focused on raising the standard of quality and diversity in the Australian hip hop landscape. Big Village was originally created by 13 predominantly Sydney based hip hop artists, MCs, DJs and Producers (namely Daily Meds, Loose Change, True Vibenation and members of Thundamentals, Tuka and Jeswon), many of whom had already been working together for years. Hence, all seeking a platform to release high quality hip hop music, they combined their networks, skills and support to create their own record label, owned and run by the artists it represents.

Big Things Volume Two will be Big Village’s 8th official release and the list of achievements across those releases has been exceptional. Suffice to say that for starters, between all Big Village Acts, main projects and side projects inclusive, there’s been about 10 tracks on triple j rotation since the labels inception.

Here’s a taste test of the Big Village posse’s live video Be My Guest. All audio and video was recorded live from one  single take on a rooftop and illustrates the diversity and skills of the various artists, as well as the joy and natural chemistry between them as label mates.

Big Album: Big Things Vol Two is as creatively adventurous as it is maturely executed, a darkly tinged buffet of bass heavy tunes that range in style and content but share a no bullshit attitude to making hip hop music. Released in May last year, Big Village’s first label compilation Big Things Vol 1 was both the triple j hip hop show ‘s and FBI ‘s Album Of The Week. The label itself was nominated for a 2011 SMAC award for Best Collective (FBI radio)

Big Tour: Big Village has undertaken the audacious task of taking their entire label on the road for the Big Things tour across September / October.  The tour will feature the full roster of current label acts including Tuka and Ellesquire performing a dual headline set, Daily Meds fresh from their Happy Daze album release and tour and True Vibenation who also recently completed their own national tour.  Coming along for the ride are Loose Change, Reverse Polarities and speed-draw-freestyle-rap-gameshow Sketch The Rhyme, featuring Big Village members Rapaport, P.Smurf and Jeswon

That’s a lot of people, but then that’s why it’s called the Big Things tour folks. The tour also represents the first time proper that the Sydney based label will truly unfurl itself at a national level, so look out. From the Annandale to The Oxford Arts Factory, the last 4 Big Village presents shows in Sydney have all sold out.

The Big Village fam invites you to come and experience this travelling party and get a sense of the groups undeniable passion and respect for both each other and the wider hip hop community.

Tour Dates:
Sept 14th @ OAF – Sydney
Sept 22nd @ Northcote Social – Melbourne
Sept 28th @ Connistan Lane – Brisbane
Oct 5th @ The Cambridge – Newcastle
Oct 6th @ Gearins – Blue Mountains

Ask…The Tongue

20 09 2011

With the recent release of his free download the Sextape, Elefant Traks member the Tongue has been swamped with a host of emails and facebook messages asking for advice on all facets of relationships and sexuality. In an effort to respond to all his fans, The Tongue has sent aahh a copy of some of the more popular and not so popular questions, we present to you Ask…The Tongue.

Long term relationships – worth the effort or overrated?
The Tongue: The best thing in the world is being in love with someone great. Sex is awesome but love is more powerful and deeply satisfying. So I would say ‘worth the effort’…..as long as the person you are trying to be with really special….and the good times outnumber the arguments. If you disagree listen to my song “Sucka For Love”…it’s on The Sextape and covers this subject in detail

Is internet porn good for a healthy relationship?
The Tongue: There’s a line from the mixtape about this ‘brain-washed by porn only dirty mind’s interest me’. I think porn is helpful as long as its realistic. But if you can only get off on gang-bang porn, then a regular sex-life might seem a bit boring. Personally I just like seeing two (ok, sometimes three) people really enjoying sex…no other types of porn really interest me…guess I’m kind of old-school like that…

Ass or titties?
The Tongue: Ass.

Is there anything you can do to change or increase your sex drive?
The Tongue: Be healthy….and make sure you are really into your partner. If they turn you on mentally and physically, sex drive shouldn’t be a problem.

Whats the best/wost sexual experience you’ve ever had?
The Tongue: Best- a few years of making love to my girlfriend. We learned how to push each others buttons perfectly….(although sadly the relationship is now over). Worst- Too much to drink at a party, met a girl and had a one-night stand, stupidly didn’t use a condom, very awkward “please don’t have my child” conversation the next day. Thankfully it was a false alarm. Phew!

What causes sexual dysfunction in women?
The Tongue: Women are taught by the media to hate themselves…they are taught that there is something wrong with them (too fat, too skinny, too short, wrong hair color, wrong dress etc). You can’t be sexually confident if you don’t believe in yourself. Ladies, if you are reading this…stay away from all the ‘beauty magazines’ they pitch at you…they are praying on your doubts and insecurities…be free! Be confident! Be you!

Whats you signature move in bed?
The Tongue: “She called him ‘The Tongue’ because he swirled it like commas”- from White Sugar (feat. Bias B) on The Sextape

Can too much masturbation hurt your sex life?
The Tongue: As long as you are still having sex….masturbate all you want.

My penis is curved. Is that normal?
The Tongue: To quote Michael Franti from Spearhead “all the freaky people make the beauty of the world”. Who knows…maybe your perfect girl has a curved vagina…

Is it necessary to take “safe sex” precautions when you are having sex with just one partner — or with someone you know well?
The Tongue: YES! Having a kid is a life-long commitment, until you are ready for that commitment, STRAP IT UP! As for STD’s…they are very common nowdays so if you are out there having sex with lots of different partners you will come into contact with something sooner or later. With that said, I think a lot of people overact to STDs….there is a lot of needless stigma. Most of them can be cured easily or are so minor/common they are hardly worth worrying about…except AIDS of course…that would be no picnic…

The Sextape features Seven, Nick Lupi, Toe-Fu, Ellesquire, Bias B & Omar Musa.

Ellesquire – Ready (Out Now)

10 08 2011

Big Village is very proud to announce the release of Ellesquire’s debut solo album Ready. Ellesquire is a rapper whose lyrics come across with an honesty and charm that is rarely heard within the local hip hop scene. Ready combines his smooth, flowing delivery and storytelling style with sample-heavy, lo-fi beats from prolific local producer P.Major.

The sound pays tribute to 90s hip hop, while keeping a fresh feel by experimenting with atypical rhythms and melodies. The album’s lead single and title track Ready has helped Ellesquire generate a buzz as one of the most interesting artists to emerge on the local hip-hop scene in 2011. Ellesquire first joined the Big Village family with his group Loose Change (Ellesquire, Rapaport & P Major) who dropped their debut album in 2010 through Big Village records, the album generated a strong level of hype and resulted in the crew sharing the stage with groups such as Gift Of Gab, Urthboy, Horrorshow, Ozi Batla and Thundamentals.

Ellesquire has been honing his craft for over ten years, and it shows. His first few years of making music were spent recording in his bedroom with no intentions of showing anybody and while his audience has grown since, his writing still maintains its deeply personal quality that tends to draw listeners in and get a true understanding of his personality, wit and charm. At 17-tracks long Ready is a fair offering of crunchy beats from P.Major who is also well-known on the Sydney jazz scene and soulful vocals from Ellesquire who explores topics from working life and love to a cheeky look at his (not always successful) attempts to pick-up women.  His talent doesn’t just stop at rapping though, the album see’s Ellesquire effortlessly singing hooks with a strong sense of melody and soulful tone.

Big Village reps Daily Meds (P.Smurf, Mikoen and Roleo), Loose Change (Ellequire & Rapaport) and True Vibenation (Verbaleyes) live on JJJ’s Hip Hop show with Hau. Dropping some verses from Big Village’s ‘Big Things Vol. One’ compilation as well as some exclusive material over Big Village productions.

The album’s lead single Ready is available for free download from bigvillage.bandcamp.com, and the album is available from all good record stores now through Other Tongues distribution.
