The Herd announce A Thousand Lives – New tour & video

The Herd get set for an action packed 2012 with the announcement of a cross country stampede and the release of video for their third single, A Thousand Lives. A Thousand Lives’ nostalgic narrative sees The Herd at their story-telling best. The uplifting track is taken from the critically adored fifth album Future Shade.

The new video is a ‘to camera’ piece utilising a projector to juxtapose the members’ previous lives. The video announcement coincides with announcement of the A Thousand Lives Tour, which takes place in March/April 2012 (see below for dates). This tour the hip hop pioneers will bring something a little different to their performance, as The Herd weave the stories and context of their 10 year history into each night through a combination of narrative and video. They will be joined by Thundamentals – fast gaining a reputation for their explosive live shows and party jams which has seen them support the likes of Big Boi & ARIA Award-winning Drapht. The Herd will also be active over summer at Woodford Folk Festival (28th and 29th December) & at the Pyramid Rock Festival (30th December).

The Herd – Future Shade Tour feat. Sietta

Forming like Voltron, The Herd blaze across the country on the Future Shade Tour with the newest Elefant Traks signees Sietta as well as a swag of great acts in each city including Jimblah, Impossible Odds, Acumen and many others. Not only that but you can get the first song from Future Shade when you buy your ticket!

The Herd are set to unveil their fifth album, Future Shade. In the lead up to the release The Herd are releasing an 8 Part series on all aspects the album, check out Part 1 with Jane Tyrrell here. Part 2 (below) features Urthboy talking about his love of fast cars and artist management in Elefant Traks. He describes how Grandma’s Song from The Herd’s upcoming album came about.

The Herd – Future Shade

It is the most complete realisation of the band’s vision, and their most carefully produced record to date. From a love of ‘90s hip hop (Red Queen Theory) to Eastern European soul (Grandma’s Song); from a Sufjan influence (My Sister’s Palace) to the incomparable (Signs of Life), Future Shade is underpinned by hip hop, but is not contained by any genre.

At their essence, The Herd have always explored the personal and the political: but the fury of a song like 77% has given way to the subtlety of a song like Shihaba, detailing a family member’s encounter with racist customs officials in Europe. The rage hasn’t dimmed though – it bubbles away, masked by melody, cheer and self-deprecating honesty. The same reason they’re loved by lawyers and labourers alike is on show here.

Individually, they’ve garnered multi-award nominations for their solo records; toured here and overseas while overseeing a celebrated roster of talent at Elefant Traks. As a group they’re greater than the sum of it all: their last record charted in the top 10; they’ve been nominated for ARIA and J Awards; have a half a dozen Hottest 100 songs and won a couple of AIR Awards. Above and beyond industry recognition, their observations and social statements have left a mark on Australia’s cultural landscape. As the ever impressive Australian music scene flourishes, one thing is certain: there is no group quite like The Herd. With the release of Future Shade, the party band is back and sticking the knife in.

The Herd – Signs Of Life (2nd single from upcoming album ‘Future Shade’)

The Herd are set to unveil their fifth album, Future Shade, with a national run of dates this August and September. The news comes as the second single from the record, Signs of Life, got its first airing on triple j this afternoon. Support at the shows will come from new Darwin duo Sietta. Details below:

Saturday August 6th sees The Herd’s first official show of the new album and it’s their only snow show. The Herd have previously done 4 shows in Jindabyne in their stellar career and they’re some of the loosest beastliestly awesome gigs ever. Plan your trip to the snow so you can party with them.

Tickets released this Friday June 24.
The Herd – Future Shade will be released August 26.
