Cortext is a WA hip hop artist who has been making noise around the state for a while now. The Perth based/South West raised lyricist has been apart of several projects over the last few years, as well as releasing two collaborative CDs, Champion Music, with SMA crewmate Chekid, and Ill Recognise Ill, with long-time friend and collaborator Aero.D.
Cortext latest effort comes in the form of two disc release titled Streaming Consciousness 2.0. Featuring a host of artists including Ulla Shay, Bsyde, Crispe, Bryte MC, Porsah Laine, Fatty Phew, Graphic, Greeley, Bitter Belief and more. Productions duties are handled by the man Cortext himself, with help from Pyrex Uno, Eddy Extrackt and Matt Rafle. Cuts are provided by Rob Shaker. Trials kicks the system into def-con 1 mode with Daydream Of A Killing and Tornts wires up the beat for shock and awe with InTerrorGate. Conseps and Beats lay down heavy covering fire on The Stampede which sees the Clan, AE, Trials and Evolve absolutely smash through the speakers and run wild through your cities blocks taking no prisoners.

Clandestien again display a depth of skill which lies beyond the norm; alongside such esteemed marksmen as Brad Strut featured on ‘The Offensive‘, an onslaught of vicious spiticism. The Funkoars and Vents on ‘Daydream of a Killing‘, a foray into the twisted writings of rap’s most heinous. As well as Billy Bunks and Briggs on ‘The Joint‘. When Hunter was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2009, the last thing he expected was the huge outpouring of respect and support from the music scene he helped to build. Fans and big name artists alike rallied for the fundraising campaign Heat for Huntz, raising thousands of dollars for Hunter and his four year old son Marley. Now aged 35 and unsure what his future holds Hunter has traded booze for daily cancer fighting juices and is working on four concurrent albums, including a compilation fundraising album supporting supporting children with cancer. He raps philosophically on youtube about his fight, tweets daily about hip hop and his medical battle, and gives candid interviews about his music, his past, and his newfound lover of being sober. Scott Kent, also known as rapper Wolverine, adopted the persona of the famous Marvel comic creation, full of rage and the unbreakable metal adamantium, long before Hugh Jackman brought the character to movie screens. And while Jackman honed his craft at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Kent also spent years honing his in Perth, except he did it in cyphers, studios and live shows around the city. With the release of his 3rd solo album, Street Music, players nationwide are soon going to need adamantium speakers.
Any notions that Wolverine is just another rapper who has thrown together an album can be quickly discarded; his new release has been almost five years in the making and during this time he has accumulated a staggering hundred plus tracks.
A relentless, dark tone runs through most of Street Music, and he excels when he draws on his real life experiences to tell stories on The Poor Boy, Back In The Day and Go Thru Hell.
Production on the album was handled by Wolverine himself and his DJ Rob Skaker.
But the stand out tracks are the one’s were Wolverine unleashes his wrath and seems to devour everything before him, The opening Wolfs Hunting is a barrage of hate as the man himself spits, “Dont hold back, this is anger rap”. Reborn and Aint Fuckin’ Around seem to cut through the speakers, but it’s not all doom and gloom,pure lyrical talent is showcased on tracks such as Street Legend, Burn and the two collaborative gems; Road Warriors with Graphic from Clandestein and the highly addictive Higher Calibre with Dazastah.
He has also performed at some of Australia’s premier live venues, and his intense live show has seen him share the stage with acts including Blackalicious, Method Man, Redman, Gza, Muggs, Foreign Legion,Brad Strut, Art of War, Downsyde, Hospice Crew, Bias B, and the Funkoars.
It’s been a long road, but with a national tour coming up and another album titled The Maestro in the works, Wolverine is about to be unleashed into the national spotlight.
