Seth Sentry – Science, Shooters & SXSW

15 03 2013

2012 was a massive year for Seth Sentry… three high-rotation singles, an album debuting at #6 on the ARIA charts, triple j’s feature album of the week and Channel [V]’s Oz Artist Of The Year award… but seeing as though he got to kick off 2013 by driving a DeLorean and currently on his North American Tour, this is already the year to beat.

SETH-poster-TukanEll

aahh: How have the last few months been in comparison to this same time last year?
Seth Sentry: Oh last year I was doing fuck all, struggling to write the album, smoking pot and playing a lot of video games, which is a  good thing. This year I’m getting fit for the tour and doing shows in America.  It’s a pretty drastic change, but I’m getting use to this transition.

aahh: The album has been doing really well, has it come close too or exceeded your expectations?
Seth Sentry: Oh far exceeded, I set my standards real low. To be honest I did the album for myself, I wrote the songs I wanted to hear. I didn’t really think of anyone else, well anyone outside of my fam.

aahh: Dear Science has been a huge hit. Do you find that half the challenge as an artist is to somehow balance the fine line between knowing what your fans like and expect, and how you can still be creative and productive as an artist?
Seth Sentry: Not really, when I did the EP I over thought it, a lot. I didn’t expect a lot of people to be in to it, and with the release and popularity of the Waitress Song, it really did my head in for a bit. My fans have really got to know me by now, they know what to expect, and are used to my style. I don’t have to be pretended, and if they don’t like it, it really doesn’t bother me.  I did rap for years without success. People think I just got really lucky, from my point of view it’s been 10-15 years of really hard work.

aahh: The Dear Science film clip,  is a great laugh. It looks like you got a few mates to help you out on this one?
Seth Sentry: Yeah it was awesome man. Grey Ghost directed this one and he is a super talented dude, he raps, sings, draws. He’s annoying. It pisses me off those sort of people. He directed my first clip My Scene, which turned out great, he had a real vision for this one. With the Waitress Song film clip I really hated the outcome, I took a backseat for that one and this time around I thought I’d take a front seat approach. I was able to fight for a few more things that I wanted. At the end of the day, it’s hard to trust someone with your work, but I fully trust the guys and what they wanted to do.  And I got to drive a DeLorean without a license.

aahh: Your upcoming National tour is titled the Dear Science tour. A lot of artists talk about tours being the highlight of the whole album release process, would you agree?
Seth Sentry: Yeah definitely man, I do like the studio though. I don’t find it as much of a pain in the ass as some others. The writing part of the album is usually pretty bad. I live in my room for days and days, smoke a lot of cigarettes it’s pretty dark. Really, what’s better than being able to meet the people who know all the words to your tracks, it’s such a great part of the process.

aahh: Do you have a favourite track on tour you always look forward to performing?
Seth Sentry: I like doing Vacation, it’s the one we start with, Dear Science with that Trials beat. To be honest the heavier stuff is my favorite shit. I’m a rapper and I’m competitive, it’s a sport to me. Softer stuff is cool and challenging but when it comes to live, I want to perform the music I enjoy listening too as a fan.

aahh: Trials is a beast right?
Seth Sentry: Yeah, I’ve always wanted to work with Trials, just never happened. This time around I hit him up early and he sent this beat back and it had a sample from the game fallout 3, it was exactly my style. So I went up to Adelaide and we hung out for a few days, played games and shit. I’m definitely looking at working with him in the future work, he also helped me out on my recent Like A Version.

aahh: How did you find your triple j Like A Version appearance?
Seth Sentry: Awesome, it was really dope. We didn’t get much notice, I think it 2 weeks. Originally I was going to perform  Bulls on Parade. But then I picked Punch In The Face, by Frenzel Rhomb, I use to listen punk back in the day.I think it came out cool, it was all done in one, never really fucked around with that. It was a bit of a challenge and my initial instincts were to say no, lets not do it. If I fuck it up it’d be so bad, it was a bit of a learning experience.

aahh:We also heard Lindsay McDougall perform a version of The Waitress Song?
Seth Sentry: Yeah that was pretty cool, I really liked his version.

aahh: You’ve just been announced to perform at South By South West Festival in Texas and also appearing at Canadian Music Week in Toronto, what was it like finding out that news?
Seth Sentry: It’s huge, never been overseas before and now I get to do it with raps. I’m heading to New York and LA, performing 5 shows and I’m over there for about 3 weeks. I’m going to catch some live hip hop, Hieroglyphics and Dead Prez. Should be really good.

aahh: With a few local hip hop artists heading in to the America market this year, do you expect to see some heads succeed in this market?
Seth Sentry: Not sure, conditions are just about right. I think people will struggle with the accent thing though. In saying that, I’ve got a few fans from the States on my Facebook. I think the good thing about Australian rap is that it’s still in this pure state where lyrics and flow are held in high regard, American’s can see that. In the USA now it’s almost the opposite, it’s a very contemporary rap scene. It’s all about the sounds you make you with your voice and rapping style. It seems to be more about the rapper then the raps or lyrics. I think in a lot of cases we are a lot more technical. People give me shit for a lot of my softer stuff, but that first verse on the Waitress Song is technical as fuck and I worked hard on that verse. I was very happy with it.

aahh: Yoy have also just been announced to play with Flume, The Rubens and Ball Park Music in triple j’s one night stand. Have you played many regional gigs before?
Seth Sentry: I’ve played a fair few, first tour we did we hit a large amount of regional locations. My manager is from regional WA, so I always try to visit those places. I Haven’t done much in QLD as I would have liked.

aahh: We’ve just seen episode 1 launch of ‘Questions With Seth Sentry’, tell us a bit about this series?
Seth Sentry: I really love playing games, I’ve got all these game titles and I’ve been collecting all these cool clips of gameplay. I thought fuck it, I should do some Q&A and people can see how sick I am and I also get to talk shit. I guess twitter and FB and the social media thing, it’s getting a bit hard to respond to everyone. My fan page has always been done by me and now it’s getting a big much. This way I can still connect with my fans and all that. Be sure to log on and send in some questions!

Seth Sentry was announced as the winner in the Doritos #Boldstage competition, which was held at SXSW today. Seth Sentry has now earned a spot on LL Cool J’s upcoming tour and also a performance on the US television show Jimmy Kimmel Live

Pez – Back In the Game Tour

14 03 2013

Pez returns to Australian stages for his first headline tour in more than 3 years. To highlight the important influence Pez has had on the Australian hip-hop scene, you need only to look at the two supports from that 2009 tour – a little known rapper named 360 and an upcoming MC named Seth Sentry.

back in the game

The Back In The Game Tour will roll through 21 dates nation-wide and provides Pez with the chance to unveil tracks from his long awaited sophomore album – including current single The Game.

Pez is a unique voice in Australian music – his records are grounded with a hip-hop ethic & infused with sweet melodies, but it is his more honest, soulful and direct lyrical approach that has allowed Pez to build a deep relationship & understanding with his loyal fan base. And that relationship is the thing Pez is most looking forward to reigniting on this tour “I’m excited to get back out amongst the fans and see how they respond to some of these new jams – both in a big festival settings and also the more intimate shows.”

The video for current single, The Game, was directed by Grey Ghost, and recently named Channel [V] Ripe Clip Of The Week. This artistic collaboration is indicative of the approach Pez has taken with the new album as the songs came together collaborating with an array of old friends and new names. Due for release later this year, the album, like this tour, promises to be something unique and very special. Fans can expect a highly evolved album full of banging beats, raw lyrics and the trademark Pez flow.

Pez has invited South Australian rapper, and current triple j favourite, Purpose to join him on the road, adding spice to an already killer night, and continuing a history of Pez throwing down and supporting the future of Australian hip-hop. But most importantly the Back In The Game Tour celebrates the re-emergence of Pez as an important voice across all genres of Australian music. You will not want to miss this.

* Purpose not appearing - Proudly supported by Live Solution, Oztix & Deezer.

Exclusive: Rapaport on FBi Radio

15 10 2012

Rapaport is one the most creatively diverse MCs in Australia and co-label manager of Big Village. For the last 8 years Rapaport has contributed extensively to the Sydney hip hop/ arts scene in various groups and artistic projects as an MC, manager, musician and producer.

Rapaport is a founding member of Loose Change with Ellesquire and P Major, and guitarist and front man of live band The Phonies, who released their debut EP Keeping It Fake in 2007. He is also creator and director of Hip Hop theatre, game show Sketch The Rhyme, which is a 12 piece live show of MCs, visual artists and band, who have performed at Edinburgh Fringe Fest 2011, Woodford Folk Fest 2010 & 2011 and Melbourne Fringe fest 2010.

This is a live radio session I did at FBi Radio on ‘The Drop’ with ‘Joyride’ in August. The radio session is very much on the style of UK radio sessions where I’be thrown in a whole bunch of material, old and new over some new beats that in really feeling. The first beat is ‘Buggn’ from the TNGHT EP by Hudson Mohawke and Lunar C, the second beat is Lighter by Champion. I really like the buzz of doing raps on live radio, I really enjoy challenging myself technically and seeing how polished I can make the overall performance“. – Rapaport

Most of these verses are taken from the Patterns mixtape which is available for free download from here.

Seth Sentry – ‘This Was Tomorrow’ debuts at #6 & is triple j’s feature album

26 09 2012

Melbourne rapper Seth Sentry has debuted at an impressive #6 on the ARIA Charts this week, with his first full-length album This Was Tomorrow. The album has been collecting a long list of glowing reviews, including from triple j radio as their Feature Album all of this week.

The huge national album tour has kicked off this week, including a much-talked about set at Newcastle’s Fat As Butter Festival. With the Queensland shows now ticked off, Seth has 6 Australian states left to visit. Dominating the airwaves with the infectious singles My Scene and Float Away, Seth Sentry has dropped one of the most anticipated albums of 2012 with his killer debut. The maiden release on Seth’s own label, High Score Records, This Was Tomorrow has found itself falling into the welcome arms of fans and industry alike.

Drawing listeners in with an unpretentious and utterly relatable voice, This Was Tomorrow leaves the conventions of Australian hip hop for new ground, and shows just how advanced Seth Sentry has become as an artist, and just how limitless the genre can be. Featuring production from Styalz Fuego (360), Trials (Funkoars, Drapht) and Matik (Pez, Bliss n Eso), This Was Tomorrow exhibits a perfect balance of classic hip hop samples and cuts, and live band energy.

The album’s second single, Float Away has projected Seth to a whole new level. The 70’s British comedy-inspired film clip received over 18,000 views in under a week. It was written by Jeremy Koren (aka Grey Ghost) with Co-Director/Cinematographer Nick Rieve and was claimed by Channel V as the ‘Ripe Clip Of The Week’ as well as ‘Indie Clip Of The Week’ on Rage. As a single, Float Away was cited by influential artist 360 as his personal pick for top 10 in the 2012 triple j Hottest 100.

Anything you could want to know about Seth’s personality is laid out in the album’s rhymes and turns of phrase, strewn across its head-nodding beats and bombastic choruses, right through to its pop culture references. This Was Tomorrow is a solid work of art that stands as both entertainment and culture… as songs you can switch your brain off and sing along to, or a window into the mind of a truly gifted artist.

Seth Sentry – This Was Tomorrow

6 09 2012

It’s been four years since Seth Sentry released his The Waiter Minute EP, that featured the huge hit single The Waitress Song. Seth is now ready to storm Australia with his debut LP This Was Tomorrow. Released today, Seth has already dropped two massive single’s from the album, in the form of My Scene and Float Away.

Seth describes his anxiousness in getting the release in to the hands of his fans. “I’m feeling excited and nervous, the album’s finished now, so I just want to get it out there.” Describing the concept behind This Was Tomorrow, Seth explains “I guess the album is pretty random in the topics that I cover. I talk about things that I want, where I am in my life and where I’ve come from. You could say it’s all about the past, present and future. In terms of the future, I have written a letter to science where I ask where the fuck my hover board is.” Since his debut The Waiter Minute EP, Seth’s identifies his biggest change, and that has been his confidence level. “When I first started working with Matik I was just trying to find my sound, something that I was happy with. I consider myself a wordy rapper and I have some pretty heavy influences, it took time to find the style that I was happy with. Coming into it this album, I guess didn’t have to do that searching. I was able to concentrate on making the music I wanted to make.”

The first single from the album was released earlier this year and was Seth’s way of letting everyone know he is on his way. My Scene, a light-hearted humorous track, raises questions of human identity and lifestyle. “I guess it’s easy to identify groups of people in society from an outside perspective. We can easily say ‘oh that’s a hipster’ or ‘that’s a business man’ but for me personally, it was a lot harder to pin down. I guess a lot of people find that’s the case, they’re not quite sure where they fit in amongst society and even with their peers. It was just where my head was at the time and also what I had seen. A lot of people say, ok I’m going to be like this and go out and purchase the ‘costume’. I had a friend who was a mad goth, I didn’t see him for a few years and then I bumped into him one day on the street and he was a full Rastafarian, with the dreads and coloured beanie to match. It’s just weird how people do that”.

Victorian producer and DJ, Matik produced Seth’s debut EP and is back again helping out on This Was Tomorrow. “Matik has produced five joints on this album, he’s a lot busier now then he was 10 years ago. I hooked up with Matik about 5 years ago when I was putting on a weekly club night. Matik was working with Pez back then, as a crew. I had got my hands on a demo they had at the time and there was this real cute track on there called Summer Days, which is now the Festival Song, but it was a little different back then. It was about surfboarding and riding scooters and all that. So I got them out.”

The second single from the album is titled Float Away and is produced by Styalz Fuego (360, Aston Shuffle) who also produces 5 tracks on the album. The film clip for Float Away is directed by Grey Ghost (Jeremedy). “Grey Ghost is the loveliest cunt, he is the best dude, like they nicest dude you’ll ever meet. He is also super creative, he can do it all. Draw, rap, sing, he is in a heap of a bands and wanted to try his hand at making videos. He directed one of Xavier Rudds videos and also worked with Matik. We had this idea of doing the clip in this crazy Woody Allen/Faulty Towers vibe, I love how it turned out.”

Float Away was the first track that Seth worked on with Styalz. “Styalz is amazing, all his beats, drums and horns are classic. When you work with him, he provides you with everything, the beat is structured, everything’s there, all the bridges, he is very fast. He is just one of those dudes that is always in the studio, he’s constantly inspired and inspiring, he’s a real pro. For Float Away he sent me this beat that was real cute and simple in style. Obviously not in structure. It wasn’t something that I’d consider my usual style. The beat had elements of pop, nothing against dudes doing that, I just prefer listening to heavy hitting classic’s, but this had something that drew me in. I wrote 3 different versions and performed 3 different takes and picked that track. I’m so wordy, it’s not easy for me to sometimes pull it back. In this track there’s an 8 bar verse a 16 and a 12, which are mammoth bars. I was thinking the track would be good for a single, it had a lighter sound and I didn’t have to sacrifice the lyrical side of things, none of this dumb shit.”

Seth Sentry’s new LP This Was Tomorrow will be released on September 14 on his newly created label High Score Records, with independent distribution through Inertia. You can pre-order now and score yourself some cool pre-order bonus’, if you hurry. Also just announced is his massive 14 date This Was Tomorrow album tour which includes stops at Fat As Butter and Sprung Festivals.I’ll be taking B. Two, who won this year’s DMC’s championships. He was defending his title from 08′ because there hasn’t been a DMC in Australia for the last 4 years. He is a beast and massively overqualified to be my DJ. I will also be bringing Grey Ghost.”

You can pre-order you copy of This Was Tomorrow by following the links below and also get your tickets to the This Was Tomorrow Album Tour, but be quick these will go fast.

Grey Ghost – Ghost In The Machine Mixtape

2 07 2012

Straight from a stint working with producers in LA, chipping away at his debut album, releasing a Mixtape and raising the roof off a handful of venues around the country, Melbourne emcee Grey Ghost has been having so much fun that he’s thrown a few more shows in the mix.

A string of dates at carefully selected venues through July have been announced which see Grey Ghost on a 4-week residency at the Workers Club in Melbourne every Wednesday in July, hitting Newcastle and then finishing back in Sydney at the Oxford Arts Factory on July 28.

The most recent of Grey Ghost’s offerings; the Ghost In The Machine Mixtape is a collection of bangers which you can download for free below. The Mixtape was  being leaked online one-a-day and features Grey Ghost twisting his rhythmic magic into the music of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Chemist, Lykke Li, The Beach Boys and The Black Keys to name a few.

Grey Ghost’s concept of the Mixtape was to sample from an entirely non hip-hop catalog as he is musically inspired by genres outside the urban realm. He teamed up with esteemed producer Matik (Pez, Seth Sentry, Bliss & Eso, Drapht) and got stuck into tunes that meant something to him, creating entirely new songs out of loops from electronica, rock and post punk. Grey Ghost is futuristic, retro and retro-futuristic all in one; rock music you can dance to, mixed with dance music that rocks. Creativity let off the leash.

Grey Ghost’s debut self-titled EP is out now. You can download the Ghost In The Machine Mixtape for free below.

Grey Ghost EP

15 02 2012

Arising from the death of Melbourne beat experimentalists The Melodics; Grey Ghost is a one-man journey through time, space and sound. From the natural poetry of Jeremedy’s urban parlance, to the kind of universal rhythms that awaken our inner primate; this is music, however technological, that remains unmistakably and beautifully human.

Debuting with a handful of songs that reiterate a definitive post-rap sound and ideology, Grey Ghost is a collision of the real world and the imagination – where opposing laws of musical physics are defied and then redefined. Futuristic, retro and retro-futuristic all in one; Grey Ghost is rock music you can dance to, mixed with dance music that rocks. Released October 2011.
