Watch: Citizen Kay – Yes!

11 04 2013

Canberra hip hop artist Citizen Kay is enjoying a rapidly growing profile thanks to some radio airplay and well received shows over the past couple of months. He’s even been added to the line-up of Groovin The Moo’s Canberra leg.

Yes!

At the age of 14 his music teachers and peers recognized his potential as a musician, however hip-hop came into play in a big way and his love of rap and the recording of it took centre stage. Since 2008 Kay has become well known for rapping in the Capital. He has written, produced and recorded songs for himself and collaborated with many others, gaining a reputation as’ the go-to guy’ for other artists around town. He is also known for his collaborations with another ACT hip-hop artist, Meddskii.

Kay’s own output also kicked off, his 2nd mixtape featured a track called Villain by Verbal which he posted on his triple j Unearthed page. The Unearthed digital station picked up on it quickly with positive reviews. From that point on Kay moved forward as an artist, he changed his name to Citizen Kay with the notion of providing beats for a whole world of people. Citizen Kay is currently working on tracks for his debut EP and another mixtape.

One of the songs he wrote and recorded was Ansah Brothers featuring his younger brother, Genesis Owusu. After receiving attention from both triple j and triple j Unearthed for this track, Kay released his first official single, Yes!. Yes! is lifted from his debut same-named EP due for release this month.

Citizen Kay has also just been announced as local support for Matt & Kim (USA) as they head out for their Groovin The Moo sideshows this May.

Win A Backstage Songwriting Workshop With Seth Sentry At Groovin’ The Moo

8 04 2013

One year shy of their 10th birthday, regional roving festival Groovin The Moo has a special treat in store for Maitland. MusicNSW has teamed up with Groovin The Moo for a special opportunity for emerging MCs and producers: an exclusive backstage songwriting workshop with one of Aussie hip-hop’s finest – Seth Sentry!

SETH-SENTRY-IMG-3

The sold-out Groovin The Moo takes place on Saturday 27 April at Maitland Showground, starring Tegan and Sara, The Kooks, Tame Impala, Flume, Urthboy, and loads more. This workshop is a great opportunity for emerging musos to score feedback from the guy who brought us The Waitress Song and Float Away.

Groovin The Moo and MusicNSW are looking for talented MCs and/or producers of all ages –and all expertise levels – to enter via email. You’ll win tickets (if not already a ticketholder) and a spot in our workshop, where you’ll hear Seth share expertise and lend advice for your career and music. There’s 12 places up for grabs: head to www.musicnsw.com for entry details and competition T&Cs.

Seth’s back on Aussie soil this month, after a recent, all-conquering trip to the USA. At Austin’s South By Southwest (SXSW) the “Dear Science” MC beat out American rappers Devin Miles and Snow Tha Productin in a one-song, major corporate sponsored rap battle. The result? Seth won an opening slot at a killer live gig featuring hip-hop legends LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Ice Cube and Doug E. Fresh, as well as landing the support for LL Cool J’s upcoming US tour. Seth also won a spot performance on US talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live”.

Win a spot at MusicNSW’s backstage songwriting workshop with Seth Sentry – entries are open now! Head to www.musicnsw.com for more details. Entries close April 19th.

Citizen Kay Announces new single ‘Yes!’

12 03 2013

Originally born in Ghana, then moving to the Capital of Australia while still very young, Citizen Kay has grown up with an ambition to make his way into the music scene. Beginning as an aspiring songwriter with a love of hip-hop, he began rapping under the name ‘Kay‘.

citizen Kay Yes!

Not long after teaching himself how to rap, he decided to start teaching himself how to make beats and the art of recording. As time went on, Kay gained more experience making beats, finessing his rapping style and writing and recording his music. His reputation spread and before long he was working with other aspiring artists and musicians in the ACT. Music has been a big part in the life of Kay. Before becoming engrossed in hip-hop he was known as a guitarist and multi instrumentalist.

At the age of 14 his music teachers and peers recognized his potential as a musician, however hip-hop came into play in a big way and his love of rap and the recording of it took centre stage. Hermitude – The Villain

22 11 2012

Hermitude’s astonishing rise is set to continue as they announce a new single and 2013 tour. They’ve released worldwide (Regal/Parlophone & Astralwerks), sold out countless shows across Australia and internationally and in the process catapulted themselves into the festival circuit with spots at Groovin The Moo, Parklife and Homebake.

Their production work has been in solid demand with remixes for The Presets, Missy Higgins and co-production credits on Urthboy’s acclaimed Smokey’s Haunt album. They won an AIR Award for Best Dance/Electronic Release and have been nominated for two ARIAs (Best Dance Release & Best Video) and a j award for Australian Album of the Year.

The Villain is the fourth single from HyperParadise. It’s a dark and pulsating piece of beat wizardry, designed to destroy club & festival PAs. The accompanying music video directed by Kess Broekman-Dattner, sees Hermitude continue on with the dance theme made famous by their j award-winning video for Speak of the Devil, only this time there’s a heist-like twist.

They will be supported by South Africa-via-Australia’s Jonti, a star on the rise whose Sine & Moon album was released on the legendary Stones Throw label. Jonti returns home to Australia having just supported Gotye across North America and Europe.

360 – ‘Child’ goes Gold!

18 05 2012

360 has continued to make waves over the past month. A really positive and successful trip to the UK to commence writing for his next album also saw his first ever UK show in London; a sold out one at that. Sixty’s prolific Tweeting throughout the trip revealed some exciting collaborations are in the works for album #3.

Upon his return Sixty took off on the regional Groovin’ the Moo festival tour and has been smashing them so far. Bendigo, Townsville, Maitland and Canberra all yielded bouncing, absolutely jam packed tents and wild audience responses. The audience’s cheers in Maitland reached 119dB (that’s louder than the PA folks!). Bunbury this weekend followed by Darwin then right out on the essentially sold out 17 date national Flying Tour, which kicks off with triple j’s One Night Stand in Dalby at the start of June.

Demand for tickets on The Flying Tour has seen almost every show sell out lightening fast. The Come Together festival sold out in a matter of days and a second 18+ Sydney show at the Metro also sold out quickly. Now, less than a month out from the first date of 360’s June Flying Tour unprecedented demand for tickets has forced the upgrade of the Wollongong Waves venue. The Wollongong show, which will take place on Friday June 9, will now be upgraded to the largest venue within the Waves Nightclub complex at the Towradgi Beach Hotel. The extra tickets go on sale Thu May 24.

The current single to be unleashed from the multi-platinum Falling & Flying album is Child. The tune has hit gold status and scored day adds with a swag of the Nova stations. Hopefully there’s more where that came from.
