Chance Waters – Maybe Tomorrow Tour

5 07 2012

This August Chance Waters is celebrating his recent success with his Maybe Tomorrow Tour. Chance will play a string of dates along the east coast throughout August following the success of the recent single Maybe Tomorrow. Maybe Tomorrow was added to rotation on triple j, and subsequently multiple stations nationally.

Upon its release the single flew to #9 on the Most Added National Radio chart and #4 on the Most Added Alternative National Radio chart. These achievements assisted Maybe Tomorrow to reach the latest height of #30 on the iTunes Hip Hop chart. In its 2 weeks in the AIR Radio Charts the single attained the highest spot of #11 and #2 on the Independent Distribution Chart.

On the event of Maybe Tomorrow receiving more than 20,000 track streams on Youtube, Chance released his video clip for the song which will no doubt hit a similar height.

Also on Youtube, Chance’s remix of Gotye’s international hit Somebody That I Used To Know has broken the overwhelming 150,000 views mark, and his previous single Infinity has hit almost 24,000 views. Recently the song has been synced to National Geographic’s trailer for its new series Doomsday Preppers which documents the day-to-day lives of people preparing for the end of the world. The trailer is currently playing to an international audience on National Geographic worldwide.

This tour is a chance for fans to catch the innovative Chance Waters headline shows for the first time along the east coast.

Chance Waters – Maybe Tomorrow

16 05 2012

Following the success of his first single Infinity, (currently sitting at over 20,000 views on YouTube), Chance has had his head down in the studio and this week will release his new track, Maybe Tomorrow from his soon to be released album, Infinity.

Produced by One Above, the new single demonstrates Chance’s lyrical potency and his potential to push the typical boundaries of the hip-hop genre with an up-beat tempo, off-beat rhythm, piano-rock influences and live instrumentation.

Following widespread national acclaim under the appellation Phatchance, Sydney hip hop artist Chance Waters is losing the alias and going ‘au naturale’ with his given name. Chance is facing a ride on a wave of aftershock following his previous success that can only further shake up the Australian hip-hop scene, as we know it.

Chance’s debut album Inkstains saw the artist claim Featured Artist spots on triple j Unearthed and Music NSW as well as topping charts in AMRAP’s Most Ordered To Air Chart. After sparking a rave of support including The Australian Newspaper labeling him as “an intelligent lyricist and masterful storyteller”, Chance is well on his way to becoming a best-selling artist invigorating “a breath of fresh air” (Rave Mag).

Chance is undeniably cementing his place as a “burgeoning hip-hop star” (Dom Alessio, triple j) and carving the path for Australian hip-hop as he goes.

Chance is currently on tour:
Saturday 18th of May – Evelyn Hotel – Melbourne [with Seth Sentry]
Saturday 19th May – FBI Social – Sydney

Phatchance – Inkstains (Acoustic) Out Feb 18th

2 02 2011

After a year packed with a massive touring schedule, including two national headline tours and supports for heavyweight acts like Method Man & Redman, DJ Premier and The Beatnuts; indie Australian hip-hop artist Phatchance is ringing in 2011 with the release of a unique, acoustic hip-hop offering titled Inkstains (Acoustic).

Crowned a Triple J Unearthed, MYSPACE.COM and SBA Music Featured Artist, as well as packing out venues nationally on his Inkstains and I Forget, Sorry! 2010 tours’, Phatchance has quickly become Sydney’s biggest unsigned hip-hop artist. Inkstains (Acoustic) includes acoustic renditions of popular songs from his debut album Inkstains (Build It Up, Mountain Of Glass,) as well as an entirely new track Infinity. The EP takes cues from the indie-folk revival and features instrumentation and harmony work reminiscent of Laura Marling, Boy & Bear and Mumford & Sons. The instrumentation is organic and lush; banjo ostinato’s revolve around mandolin and acoustic guitar textures and pay homage to hip-hop roots through thick double bass grooves and clever, introspective song writing. The disc breaks’ entirely new ground for Australian hip-hop music and introduces a score of new sounds for the genre – a typical ‘unplugged’ release this is not.

The lead single Build It Up features an interstate, Unearthed networked collaboration with independent Brisbane folk pop sweet hearts Charlie Mayfair, who lend their emotive three part harmonies to a song which captures the essence of young love and the inevitably contradictory emotions which come with it. At times Imogen Heap and at others Lupe Fiasco an infectious chorus, clever harmonies and tight performances merge in a single sure to turn heads on the national stage. Other stand outs include a previously unreleased offering Infinity taken from Chance’s sophomore album scheduled for release later this year – the track is movingly arranged and proves why Chance has earned labels such as ‘a masterful storyteller’ (The Australian) and ‘wisdom beyond his years’’ (Onion Mag).

The release will be launched with a full live band through a FREE, three week, acoustic residency at Sydney’s popular Oxford Art Factory on the 11th, 18th and 25th of February, before being taken across the country in a limited run of dates at intimate venues. Phatchance will be joined by stage partner Coptic Soldier, Charlie Mayfair and Sydney local Atlas B Salvensen.

Phatchance – Inkstains (Official Video Clip)

21 10 2010

Each year Triple J Unearthed in conjunction with NIDA select five of the most promising new artists from across the country to have a professional video clip directed for one of their tracks. This year Phatchance’s song Inkstains – a jam which has already proven popular on Triple J and community radio networks across the country – was one of those tracks chosen.

The video clip is directed by Stephen Nicolazzo and features cameos from Coptic Soldier, Johnny Utah and Smiles Again (Mind Over Matter). Quite frankly it’s messy, colourful and weird (probably in a good way). Phatchance is currently on the road with fellow I Forget, Sorry! members Coptic Soldier & Johnny Utah as part of the I Forget, Sorry! 2010 National Tour.

As luck would have it the release of the new video clip (currently doing the rounds on RAGE) coincides with the beginning of the tour, which will take the artists on more than 15 dates across the country, beginning in QLD and ending in WA in early December.

aahh: Your debut album Inkstains has had such a positive response, how are you feeling after dropping the album and getting a chance to tour around Australia?
Phatchance: I’ve  been overwhelmed with all the opportunities that have come my way since dropping the album, to be honest I didn’t really know what to expect, we went into the whole thing with very little budget and the mind set that it was going to act as a platform to my sophomore, it’s definitely exceeded my expectations in that regards. The touring has probably been the most fun part of the whole process, sometimes it’s really hard to envision the fact that people you don’t directly know are listening to your music, so seeing all these new faces at shows is really exciting for me.

aahh: The launch in Sydney obviously had a few heads turning with not only your music, but also the concept of the gig being a Face Paint Event. How did you come up with this idea and what was the motivation behind it?
Phatchance: Haha, if by a few heads turning you mean it sparked all out war then I’d say you’re probably right. A lot of things motivated me in developing the concept, primarily I wanted to put on a show that was interesting for punters and that was likely to help us fill a venue larger than my popularity should have allowed, I also wanted to do something cool with the theme of Inkstains, since we couldn’t have an ‘ink’ party (for OH&S reasons) I figured a face paint party was the next best thing. For better or worse it definitely generated a lot more interest in my music across the country, I think there’s a lot of natural tension between the traditionalists in the scene and the next generation of artists and I think in a lot of ways my gig brought that to the front and got people debating.

aahh: You’ve just announced that you’re about to set off on a second national tour, which is great news. The tour will also feature a Face Paint Event in Sydney on August 6. We hear it may be the last?
Phatchance:
Well, the second tour hasn’t technically been announced yet, we’re still finalizing dates, but it’s looking like it’ll run through September and October with spot shows peppering both sides, I’m very excited about the prospect and hopefully it’ll help generate some more interest in the album. The Sydney Face Paint Event probably won’t be the last one, but my assumption is this will be the last tour where we do the Face Paint shows and it’ll be the biggest of those that we do. I’m really interested in having themed gigs and parties in the future because I think they work well and are heaps of fun for punters, but since the Inkstains run is starting to wind down I’m keen to avoid becoming ‘The Face Paint guy’ and play with some new ideas.

aahh: Fellow I Forgot, Sorry! stable mate Coptic Solider will be joining you on this tour. What’s it like touring as an independant artist within Australia, do you rely on mates hooking you up with a place to stay?
Phatchance: Coptic will be joining me on all the tour dates and Johnny Utah (also of I Forget, Sorry!) will be supporting us on the bulk of the legs as well. If I had one word to describe the process it’d be messy, flights are rare (we do huge amounts of driving) and those times we do get to touch the sky it’s usually with Tiger, runs six hours late and we miss sound check. Friends couches and floors are definitely a big element, in most cases they’re actually cleaner than the dinghy back packers we stay and we pour any spare money into trying to organize and promote the best show we can. With that said I love it, there’s something so amazing about the whole experience and I’ve become addicted to the travelling, I’m really glad for all the friends I’ve made as well and you really see human generosity first hand in those situations.

aahh: Will we see any new material on the tour?
Phatchance: Definitely, we’re currently reworking a lot of the set and trying to incorporate new songs and remixes into the act. Hopefully we’ll travel with the band again to the key locations, we have some big ideas it’s just about nutting them out at this stage.

aahh: Any plans on the horizon for a follow up to Inkstains?
Phatchance:
I’m currently working on an acoustic EP which contains revamped tracks off Inkstains as well as an entirely new song. I’m also about a third of the way through writing the next album and am in the middle of sourcing beats and arranging features. I want this album to feel a lot more organic and progressive and I really believe my song writing has improved in the time since I finished Inkstains, I’m itching to get back in the booth and start seeing the tracks come together. I’m also recording new albums for Johnny Utah and Coptic Soldier and have been writing feature verses wherever I can spare the time.

Phatchance – Inkstains Review/Interview

27 11 2009

Today has seen the official release of Phatchance’s debut solo album, entitled Inkstains. As we do, allaussie hip hop has prepared a review of the album plus also some questions that we threw at Chance regarding his debut solo release, dropping via Obese Records Distribution. This project has been a real labor of love and features production from some of Phatchances’ closet mates including Adit (Horrorshow), Konfuzion, Akouo, Elgen, DJ Hoppa & One Above. It also features contributions from the likes of 360, Smiles Again (Mind Over Matter), Joyride & HR King.

Inkstains is 12 tracks deep, and comes in nice fold out cover. We must point out the dope foam CD holder and card diggipak, we all hate those plastic CD holders that break within a week of purchase. Phatchance describes Inkstains as a collection of moments that have shaped his life, and it’s this personal flavor that really had us listening time and time again. This is one album ‘joe blow’ could relate too. Stories of growing up, love lost, family problems  and alcohol abuse are common place in today’s society, Phatchance delivers on these topics with intelligent lyrics and killer beats, this album holds it’s own among the top releases of this year.

So you played the role of the man with many hats on Inkstains, what was it like recording mixing and mastering the whole project yourself?
Challenging and rewarding, it’s easy to be hyper critical while working on every aspect of a project, it’s also easy to prolong the process through laziness or stress, which unfortunately are both big vices of mine. In the end I actually had the project remastered at Studios 301 by a really talented engineer called Andrew Edgson, I’m super happy with the result, it’s always beneficial to have another set of ears put the final touches on the project.

You have been involved in the hip hop scene for what seems like a long time, has your contact book and previous experience helped in making Inkstains one of the year’s top debut releases?
It definitely helped, acquiring so many producers and rappers as friends I had a really strong contact base when going into the creation of this album, it also let me work in a really organic, friendly way, which is what I’m after with the music making process. I guess people will have to draw their own judgments in terms of whether this debut lives up to the hype, at the end of the day I’m happy with the final product, the rest is up to the public, music is such a subjective artform that I’m trying not to count any of my chickens until I witness public reaction first hand.

Lighter tracks such as Angles In My Ears and Inkstains (the title track) initially grabbed our attention, Phatchances presence on the mic throughout the whole album is solid. The Catchy Song featuring 360, Smiles Again and Joyride will prove to be a summer hit radio wise. Although it was with a few more listens that we really found Phatchance excel in those tracks with a little more depth. Mountain Of Glass, may divide some, but anyone who digs conscious hip hop will dig this.

The Catchy Song featuring 360 raises some interesting points on commercial music and radio. Where do you see the Australian hip hop scene and it’s future, in relation to the commercial sector?
I think that Australian Hip-Hop is slowly transforming from a small sub-genre of the Australian music scene to a primary part of the entire musical landscape. Whether this is good or bad for the quality of the music is, I guess, the big question. My biggest gripe with the proliferation of local hip-hop music through the media is the reliance on gimmicks, there’s very little room for alternative or more melancholy hip-hop to make a mark, particularly on commercial radio. This isn’t the fault of the artists but the fault of the media that foster that particular image of local hip-hop music, I think as the genre establishes itself more we’re going to see a much wider array of local hip-hop music in the public spectrum, which can only be a positive thing. With that said I enjoy happy summertime tracks as much as the next man, that song is as much an homage as it is an address, it’s all very satirical and light-hearted and to make that clear I thought it was really important to work with someone like 60 on it, who is also a close friend.

The title track Inkstains mentions performing live in front of a crowd, is this one of the more enjoyable process of releasing an album? You recently performed with The Funkoars what was that like?
I absolutely love touring, it’s one of the best parts of my life and I think I’ve clocked more than 25,000 KM’s in the past year traveling across the country to play gigs. The Funkoars show on the weekend was a lot of fun, it was all ages and in a place called Wangaratta, I had never even heard of Wangaratta, let alone did I realise we had fans in the area!

One of the clear stand outs, in this thoroughly enjoyable album, is the track Reflections. Featuring emcee Prime from South Australia, with production work from Horrorshow’s Adit. Phatchance and Prime both bring some raw honest hip hop on this track with verse’s that will tear your house down. Production from Adit is nothing short of brilliant. We were left to ponder the possibility of Horrorshow’s, Solo teaming up with Phatchance on a future track together, something we all hope to see. Some other tracks worth mentioning include I Don’t Know featuring Sam McNeill, Mountain Of Glass, Build It Up featuring H.R King, Angels In My Ears and Battlescars.

Now you worked with a lot of people on Inkstains, tell us about the track Reflections, how did you hook up with and what was it like working with Adit from Horrorshow and also emcee Prime?
Adit is one of my favorite producers in the country, we also grew up together and attended the same highschool so I’d been fiending for an opportunity to make a song with him. I can’t communicate how talented that dude is, in the one day we spent together in the studio he transformed the bones of that beat with some of the funkiest key playing I’ve ever seen. I have a huge amount of respect for Prime as a lyricist, that was one of the last tracks to come together on the album and I knew I wanted a feature on it, Prime was always in my mind as someone to get on the album so I’m really happy we could do that.

The whole album has a very personal flavor to it, Was it always your intention to go down this path or did it just evolve that way?
I think it’s important to write for the heart, I’m not strictly the kind of melancholy portrait the album paints me but when I sit down to write I want to write about things that touch me and for better or worse those things are often my personal problems. I operate under the knowledge I’m not the best rapper in the world, hell, I’m probably not the best rapper in my suburb. If I didn’t bring something new to the table there would really be no reason for anyone to listen to my music, I figure by trying to break down some of the stereotypes of local hip-hop music I’m offering myself the biggest chance to develop a supporter base, the whole process of writing is also very cathartic and has helped me get through a lot of things.

Phatchance lives and breathes hip hop, he raps about what he feels and what influences him, he loves sharing his stories, his passions and his hurts with all and he’s not scared to do so. Phatchance delivers with confidence, maturity and style. As he said himself he may not be the best rapper in the world, but its clear he knows his hip hop. This is a brave release, Phatchance really has taken risks with Inkstains, where others would have played it safe. It’s pretty difficult to be over critical of anything in particular. It may not be the cup of tea for some, but at the end of the day quality hip hop is quality hip hop.

If the quality alone didn’t win you over, I’m sure the free bonus disc that comes with Inkstains will, featuring fellow I Forgot, Sorry Crew members Coptic Solider and Mind Over Matter. This bonus disc comes with a decent selection of songs, and gives us a real taste of what the IFS crew are all about. Expect big things from these guys in the new year!

Now you have had some pretty kind comments from the Hilltop Hoods in regards to your music, has this added any pressure?
I wouldn’t say it’s added pressure if anything it helped me actually get the album finished. I’m operating under the assumption most of the album is probably not to those guys tastes, afterall many of the tracks are in a grossly different direction to the music they make, but since The Hoods formed the backbone of my musical education it feels great to have a wink and a nod from Suffa.

Will we see you performing around the nation with the I Forgot Sorry crew in the new year?
You better believe it, I’m currently booking a run of shows nationally for March, before then I’ve got spot shows under the NYE period and a spate of random performances before the end of the year. Next year I want to take my music everywhere that wants to have me, hopefully this album is received well enough to warrant that.

All in all, Inkstains is a top release. Phatchance has chosen well on the producer front and has collabed well with his sensible guest list. With crews of the likes of  Spit Syndicate and more recently Horrorshow – Phatchance, is clearly among the new school of Australian Hip Hop acts pushing for a more meaningful style of hip hop. With insightful rhymes, a truthfulness that will smack you in the face with a hammer plus a bonus CD freebie, how could you turn Phatchances debut solo effort down.  We rate Inkstains a large 4.08 out of 5.

Be sure to grab your copy from all the usual places.
