This is a brand new track called Public Consumption from Elefant Traks crew Horrorshow. This little gem was cooked up recently and has now cracked over 1000 downloads in less then 24 hours. Attending Fort Street High School, whose musical output includes Josh Pyke, Unkle Ho (The Herd) and Joelistics among others, both Solo and Adit were heavily involved in bands, ranging from jazz through to rock.
Along with fellow school mates and current One Dayers, Spit Syndicate, they embraced hip hop as the genre made big strides in Australia. Horrorshow have officially solidified their position in the ranks of Australias finest. Check out the new range of Horrorshow merch available at Groovin The Moo and the Running On Air Tour. Each item comes with a free bandtag download card which includes two unreleased acoustic recordings (American Girl and Waiting for the 5.04) from the recent show @ The Basement in Sydney this year. It also includes the brand new song Public Consumption as well as a few songs from the Inside Story and Grey Space albums. You can’t get these acoustic songs anywhere except this sick little card.
Proudly presented by Channel [V], NOVA, and MySpace, the fifth Annual Jagermeister Independent Music Awards (formally known as the Jagermeister AIR Awards) will be held on Friday October 1st at The Forum Theatre in Melbourne.
The event is a rare opportunity to join great Australian Musicians and the Industry at large, as they celebrate success with the Award winners, and enjoy performances by some of the country’s most sought after artists.
The Jagermeister Independent Music Awards are Australia’s only official independent music awards, rewarding the country’s highest achieving independent artists across all genres, in any given year.
The evening will feature performances from those purveyors of punk, hardcore rockers The Amity Affliction; new indie darlings and vintage-alt-pop stars Cloud Control; virtuosic jazz pianist Joe Chindamo; indie wunderkids and brit-rock exponents British India; the intoxicating world-renowned singer-songwriter Sally Seltmann; and a hip-hop extravaganza from M-Phazes with Illy, Muph & Candice Monique, Solo and Mantra which promises some electric on-stage collaborations.
Awards to be presented during the evening include Best Independent Dance / Electronic Release, Best Independent Artist, Best Independent Hip Hop/Urban Release and Best Independent Hard Rock/Punk Release among others, with a number of high profile special guest presenters on hand to help with proceedings.
Now in their fifth year, The Jagermeister Independent Music Awards continue to grow and are now recognised as a barometer for future ‘big’ acts. Previous winners include Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, The Hilltop Hoods, The Herd, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Gotye, British India, Sneaky Sound System and John Butler, many of whom have gone on to major commercial and critical success subsequently.
Given the depth of such Label and Artist success, Independent Music can no longer be viewed as just small or emerging. Independent labels are currently estimated to have 80% of titles on shelves and online, and continue to have the biggest winning scorecard every year from the ARIA awards to triple j’s Hottest 100, while also providing the bulk of talent to the Australian festival circuit each year.
Curated and created by the Australian Independent Record Label Association (AIR), this year’s Jagermeister Independent Music Awards will be the jewel in the crown of ‘Melbourne Music’, a 10-day music festival programme presented by The City of Melbourne. AIR is a (non-profit, non-government) national trade association promoting and representing the interests and development of Australian independent artists, labels and music companies in Australia and throughout the world.
To win a double pass to the gig change your status on Facebook to: “I want to go to the Jagermeister Independent Music Awards” and tag AIR | Australian Independent Records. You could rub shoulders with industry and catch an awesome lineup including British India, Cloud Control, Amity Affliction and M-Phazes.
This is a quick look behind the scenes with one of Australia’s biggest hip-hop producers M-Phazes at a rehearsal with Muph, Mantra, Candice, and the D²Drumline for the upcoming AIR Awards at the Forum un Melbourne on October 1st.
Elefant Traks is pleased to announce Horrorshow’s Walk You Home Tour with 8 shows nationwide this August/September.
The horse that is Horrorshow’s live reputation has bolted! Their Inside Story tour earlier this year was a smashing success playing to over 4000 people including 2 sellout Sydney shows (the first selling out 3 weeks in advance) at the Factory.
The buzz around Horrorshow keeps growing: their evocative, ego-free hip-hop continues to strike a chord with a diverse and growing legion of devoted fans. They were recently featured in J-MAG for the tattoos fans have made out of their lyrics. After appearances supporting Hilltop Hoods in England and Germany (July check below), as well as a spot on the sold out Splendour In The Grass, Horrorshow will be perfectly prepared for a thrilling tour to complete an amazing run since their Inside Story album came out in 2009.
In support is Melbourne’s rising star Seth Sentry, whose Waitress Song was one of 2009′s best loved tunes, coming in at #31 on triple j’s Hottest 100. Fresh from an Unearthed J Award nomination, Seth’s debut album is now very much anticipated.

Horrorshow supporting the Hilltop Hoods in Germany and UK
Yes, you did read that right. In a few weeks time, Horrorshow will be playing a series of shows right here in Europe with Australia’s own, the almighty Hilltop Hoods!
The Hoods are playing a bunch of festivals including Openair Frauenfeld with the big homie Urthboy, as well as some shows with D12 and a handful of their own headline club dates which they’ve asked the guys from Horrorshow to join them for.
Horrorshow will also be supporting them in London (July 13), Heidelberg (July 25) and Munich (July 26). Needless to say the guys are very excited for these shows, so if you’re going to be in Europe go party with them! Also if any of you have crew over in England or Germany please hit them up and tell em to come along and check out the guys first attempts to take their music to the rest of the world.
Nick Lupi from the Spit Syndicate catches up with allaussie hip hop to talk about their new release Exile, touring, competing with hip hop legend Ozi Batla plus more:
aahh: Exile has just dropped lads, congrats on the release. Brilliant is something that comes to mind. Tell us a little about the album? Nick Lupi: Big ups Jim, thank you – glad you like it. I much prefer to let the music speak for itself rather than try to describe it with words, but in terms of the album, it’s the culmination of a lot of late nights and long studio sessions – myself, Jimmy and Adit all put a lot of work, time and love into it. We’re stoked to have it out there, especially since it had been so long since our last release.
aahh: What were some of the main inspirations behind Exile and how did you draw on these in the creative process? Nick Lupi:The obvious answer for inspirations behind the albums comes from the experiences that we’ve had over the past two years: traveling overseas, touring the country, real life shit like moving out of home, balancing work, music and study, personal relationships, the general goings on of the world at large. We are firm believers in putting lyricism at the forefront of writing songs – that’s the sort of music we like to listen to, where the words count just as much as the music. We drew on all of the aforementioned experiences that we’ve had over the past two years and wrote the album.
aahh: Starry Eyed is the lead single from Exile, it is also the title of the national tour which we will talk about a bit later on. What was the reason behind picking Starry Eyed for the lead single and tour title? Was it simply because it was your favorite song off the album? Nick Lupi: I wouldn’t say it’s our favourite song of “Exile” – although we do dig it – it was the lead single because it’s the most (maybe only) radio-friendly song we had on the album. We didn’t make the album with radio songs in mind (something we should probably start doing if we want any serious airplay!). Starry-Eyed was the last song we wrote, it came together in the last few weeks before we had to mix and master the record, Adit came through with this catchy, swinging piano-driven beat and the song was built around that. We named it the Starry-Eyed tour just because the song is enjoying a few spins at the moment on radio.
aahh: Exile has been described as being a ‘very accessible’ album for even the non hip hop fans? Do you think that this is correct or do you think that Australian Hip Hop has reached a point where people realise that this isn’t just a few Australian guys trying to be American? Nick Lupi: I think that point was reached a few years ago, I think “The Calling” was probably the album that deaden that stereotype for many mainstream listeners. “Exile” is quite a dense album lyrically but we tried to make the songs easy on the ear as much as possible, so it’s a big compliment to be told it’s described as “very accessible”.
aahh: The album was released on the same day as one of the kings of Australian Hip Hop Ozi Batla’s – Wild Colonial and still managed to debut at #8 on the ARIA charts and #3 on Air. What did you guys think of that? Nick Lupi:You’re right, Ozi is very much a king of Australian hip-hop – so it’s a bit daunting to be dropping on the same day as him. To have both records drop on the same day and chart within the top 10 is great to see – we were stoked with it, it’s a good look for Sydney hip-hop. Big shout outs and much much respect to Ozi, Sandro and the Elefant Traks crew – they’ve been holding down Sydney and beyond for 10+ years, it’s crazy shit.
aahh: There has been a lot of discussion lately surrounding the term ‘Urban’ and it’s application to the Australian Hip Hop music scene. What is your point of view on this subject and does it at all affect you as a performing artist/crew? Nick Lupi: I couldn’t care less about what they call Australian hip-hop. I agree the term ‘urban’ is a bit messy and very dated and I can see how people might have a problem with it, but I wouldn’t say it has any sort of effect on us.
aahh: 12 Dates have just been announced for the national Starry-Eyed tour. What are some of your favorite destinations around Australia and who will be some of the support acts? Nick Lupi: We had an absolute ball on the last tour we did with the Horrorshow boys, pretty much every date was wicked so it’s hard to pick favourites. Melbourne is always a favourite, Brizzy too, we had an amazing time over on the West Coast last time as well (Mojo’s at Fremantle – god damn!). All will be revealed in the next few days, so I can’t tell you all of them. But the supports for Sydney will be Thundamentals, Skryptcha (overage) and Skryptcha, Daily Meds for all-ages.
aahh: Spit Syndicate are members of the OneDayer Crew which encompasses Adit and Solo from Horrorshow. What’s it been like owning the last 12 months with these two? Especially after their Inside Story release? Nick Lupi: “Inside Story” has got to be one of the strongest local releases to come out in the past five years, in my opinion (which of course is a little bit biased). It’s a little bit scary being in a crew with Solo and Adit because they are such absolute freaks in what they do, but at the same time I couldn’t be prouder.
aahh: Triple J recently held a comp in conjunction with M-Phazes and Unearthed, DJ Joyride entered as an emcee, he also features on one track on the album. Quite a talented guy you have behind the decks. Will we see more from Joyride in the future? Nick Lupi: Man, Joyride is seriously ON SOME SHIT. He’ll be the first to tell you that he couldn’t do a scratch routine to save his life, but is most certainly one of the most talented cats I’ve ever come across. He does try his hand at rapping from time to time but where you’re going to see him shine is with his band, Joyride and the Accidents (Adit is also in this band, so is Jono from Made in Japan). The man is a crazy songwriter and he is going to blow the fuck up, gotta do as many gigs with him as we can before that happens..
The ‘Starry-Eyed National Tour’ is guaranteed to be the biggest tour yet from one of the country’s most exciting hip-hop groups – do not miss this tour when it rolls through your town.
Touring throughout July, tickets on sale now from here.
The buzz around Horrorshow is staggering: they’ve swept up everyone from Triple J kids to purist heads and indie hipsters. Their new album Inside Story was JJJ Album of the Week & Hip Hop Album of the Year (SMH) and their joint launch with Urthboy sold out the Metro Theatre in Sydney.
The evocative brand of earnest, ego-free hip-hop announced by their debut album The Grey Space, earned them an ARIA nomination for Best Urban Release. Coupled with acclaimed recordings is their growing reputation for explosive live shows, most recently winning over a swag of new fans during 25 shows (over 7000 payers) on the Spitshine Tour.
If you’re talking hip hop, Horrorshow are a group to watch.
It’s now time to announce the winner of the double pass to catch Horrorshow perform on their nation wide, Inside Story Tour featuring Spit Syndicate (selected dates).
We had a huge response to this comp and it was quite interesting to see what songs were rated amongst fans.
The winner of the double pass, to take along a friend to see Horrorshow is M.Densely of Springwood QLD. Michael and a mate will be attending the Brisbane leg of the tour (hope to see some photos). Here are the three tracks that Michael picked as his favourite and a little paragraph on why these songs.
M. Densely’s top 3 tracks off Inside Story:
Neighborhood Hit – Dope bassline, laid back steezed out flow with a nod to hip hop roots of graff in the suburbs. Makes me wish i could go back to Melbourne in the 80′s when the most important thing was getting together on a Saturday at Richmond station and swapping paint, markers, laces and new styles with other writers.
The Rain – Eerie hook and deep lyrics combine to paint a picture of hope and lost dreams. Skillful track.
Thoughtcrime – The most accessible track for most of my mainstream friends. This has been responsible for me introducing heaps of people to the new sound of aussie hip hop. Rhymes full of punchy alliteration and crystal clean beats and samples tied together with a hook that everyone is humming along to by the second chorus. “see there’s music that makes you dance, and music that makes you feel. No longer am I sure which one is more real” beautifully describes the battle we all go through at stages trying to balance our love for traditional hip hop with the new styles and flavours we get hit with every day.
Please note that Horrorshow’s Sydney show at The Factory (Feb 26) sold-out last week.
As a result a 2nd second show has been confirmed for April 10, again at The Factory Theater (All-ages).
Thanks to all the people that entered, winner was drawn randomly. Shout out to the Elefant Traks fam.
It”s time to bring the second edition of our monthly cook up. This time around we’re featuring Adit from the dynamic duo, Horrorshow.
After a massive six months for the guys with the release of their second full length album, Inside Story plus an ARIA nomination for their debut record, The Grey Space and a support on Urthboy’s Spitshine tour, there has been no rest for the lads and it’s only about to get more hectic. To coincide with the monthly cook up, allaussie hip hop are happy to announce that Horrorshow will embark on their very first headline Tour in Feb-March 2010.
Horrorshow have seen a rapid but organic rise over the past 12 months, their second album featuring as Triple J Album of the Week and FBi sunsets Album of the Week. Their swelling fanbase is about as eclectic as they come, hip hop heads, indie kids and hipsters have all embraced their evocative brand of earnest, ego-free hip hop.
Don’t miss this chance to catch their growing reputation for explosive live shows. Please note W.A dates will be confirmed shortly. Tickets on sale Dec 18th.
For your chance to win a double pass to the Inside Story Tour (closet show to the winner) check out Adit’s dope dumpling recipe below. It’s sure to spice up your weekend.
Momo Recipe (Nepali Dumplings) Filling:
1kg Pork Mince
4 Tomatoes
2 White Onions
5 cloves of garlic
2.5 inches of ginger
2 Spring Onions
2 Coriander bunches
½ teaspoon Turmeric
2 teaspoons Cumin Powder
3 teaspoons coriander Power
2 teaspoons Chili Powder
1 pinch of Ajinomoto
3 tablespoons of oil
3 tablespoons of salt
1 teaspoon of black pepper
Pastry:
1 kg flour
water
Golbera ko achar (tomato chutney):
8 Tomatoes
3 cloves of garlic
2 tablespoons of salt
½ coriander bunch
Spring Onions stems
2 tablespoons Chili Powder (or according to taste – you can also put in as many chillies as you desire again depending on taste)
You need a steamer, a few big bowls, a blender!
Momo 1. Start by dicing the white onions and tomatoes as finely as possible. 2. Cut off the stems of the spring onions and coriander, leaving only the leaves. 3. Dice the leaves of the spring onions and coriander as finely as possible. Keep the stems for the tomato chutney. 4. Grate the garlic and ginger as finely as possible. 5. Place the mince in a bowl. 6. Add all the finely diced ingredients and the rest of the ingredients/spices. 7. Use your clean hands to mix it all. Make sure all of the mince is mixed in with the rest of the ingredients, leaving no trace of raw meat. 8. Pour 1 kg of flour into a large bowl. 9. Add small amounts of water as necessary mixing with your hands to create dough. Be careful not add too much water too soon. The dough should be thick and tough. 10. Wrap the dough tightly in cling wrap to let it set. 11. Carefully take out small amounts of dough at a time. 12. Roll each small amount of dough thinly, and use a medium-sized cup about 2 inches in diameter to cut out circular shapes. This will be our momo pastry. 13. Use a finger to dip in a bowl of water and gently apply to one side of the momo pastry. 14. Use a teaspoon to take out small chunks of our momo filling and place in the momo pastry circles – on the moistened side. 15. Take one end of the pastry and join it with the opposite end (forming a semi-circle of sorts). 16. Slowly fold in small increments from one end of the pastry to the other. It can help to moisten the edges and gently clasp together the edges once they have been folded. 17. Continue until you run out of filling or pastry, whichever comes first. 18. Start boiling water for the steamer. Wait until water is boiling 19. Place momo in the steamer, and allow to cook for roughly 15 minutes. Make sure you check though! The momo is cooked when the outside is shiny and moist. To double-check just slice it open and see if the filling is cooked. 20. Enjoy!
Golbera Ko Achar 1. Place tomatoes in a grill and heat for approximately 20 minutes at 150C or until skin is slightly burnt. 2. Place grilled tomatoes into a bowl. 3. Grate in all garlic. 4. Add the stems from the spring onions and coriander. 5. Finely dice the coriander leaves and add. 6. Add salt and chili powder 7. Use blending device and blend until consistency is smooth. 8. Serve with momo.
All you have to do to enter the comp is, tell us your top 3 songs off the album Inside Story, put your name, address and which show you’d like to attend in an email and send it to allaussiecomps@gmail.com. The entries that match allaussie hip hops top 3, will then go into the final draw for the tickets, the winner from there will be chosen at random.

Whoever said South Australia was the home of aussie hip hop may have something to say about this. New South Wales has had some quality releases this year and there is no exception with this one.
Sydney siders Horrorshow, made up of Adit and Solo, are set to release their second full length album titled Inside Story today. We have been spinning this album for about a week now and let me say, we haven’t even scratched the surface of this truly remarkable album. The album has a depth, in both content and style that has to be applauded. The album contains 13 tracks, and features fellow One Dayer crew members Spit Syndicate and also Elefant Traks compadre Jane Tyrrell.
The album cover features a nap sack spewing out a photo montage of what seems to be photos of Solo and Adit’s personal experiences. It’s this style of sharing personal moments, where Horrorshow truly seem to hit their strides.
After opening the cover, we find a nice thick lyric book. The layout and design of the lyric book is top notch, it’s a great addition to the album. After flicking through some of Solo’s lyrics, you quickly realize that the writing skill of this 19-year-old, is well beyond his years.
After pressing play I find myself not skipping the usual cliche intro track but instead, attempting to rap along with Solo’s sampled version of The Message by Grandmaster Flash, this had me hooked instantly.
With all of the 13 tracks having a length of over three and half minutes except the interlude, it really is a massive effort from Horrorshow to fill the time with quality lyrics and beats that aren’t boring, dry or dull. Instead Inside Story is quite the opposite, the album offers one of the most refreshing, exciting and stunning listens of the year. I don’t think I can use the word exciting one more time, but what really got us going the most about this album was its depth and it’s lyrical truthfulness, can’t stress this enough. The title, themes and artwork are as they suggest, an Inside Story on the life and times of Adit and Solo.Horrorshow presents the listener with a clear picture of not only inner Sydney life, but also life as it is growing up in Australia. Solo and Adit announce early on that they are back to give the Grey Space a paint job….. well fuck me, I think they have knocked down what was the Grey Space and rebuilt it with the killer updated version of what is now the Inside Story.
It really was a hard task to review this album. To give you, the reader a real taste of the issues dealt with by Horrorshow, would take 10 more pages. The lads really have captured something special here.
Highlights from the album include:
The Interlude track Nothing To Be Done. A special mention must be made for an interlude track that you don’t skip on after the third listen. Solo’s writing ability. “You see – kids get bored / kids kill time / so as long as there’s kids on this planet/ kids will rhyme”. We have come to the conclusion that Solo was a very bored kid.
Track 1-13 we shit you not, I have yet to press skip once!
Inside Story has the depth of a Herd album, the polish of a Hoods album and a truthfulness that’s been unheard of for a long time.
Without sounding over the top, Inside Story is the complete aussie hip hop package. Everything ties in nicely, from Solo’s flow and subject matter to Adit’s production and moody beats. Horrorshow bring back something we’ve missed in aussie hip hop lately and that’s a great story.
Overall this album should not be slept on, if you missed The Grey Space, then don’t miss out on one of 2009′s finest releases, Horrorshow’s Inside Story. This album is one to buy for sure. The lyric book alone is worth the purchase price and is a great read. I give Horrorshow – Inside Story 4.25 out of 5. It really blew us away, look out SA!
Later on today I will update this post with a link to the album on iTunes. In the mean time head over to the Horrorshows website here. Below you can check out the track list and times.
