Lee Harnden – Catharsis

10 09 2012

750 Rebel and Ironlak writer team’s LINZ aka Lee Harden showcased his latest body of work Catharsis at Lightspace this August. With Karsniogenics CEO DJ Dcide taking on the role of event producer, combined with the many talents of their valued supporters and sponsors the show went off with a hella-of-a-boom!

Lee Harnden’s Catharsis is an exhibition of subversive explorations; a collection of portrayals that transcend the divide between Australian street culture and the grandeur of fine art.

As LINZ, an internationally acclaimed and Ironlak-sponsored graffiti writer with a career now spanning 20 years, Harnden’s movements have aligned him with celebrated Australian musicians, artists and sporting personalities. These figures, along with some closer to his heart, form the pith of his work; a realism characterised by the heightened juxtaposition of subject and technique.

There is a brutal honesty in Harnden’s work. While highlighting the rawness of gangland imagery he affords a sentimentalist portrayal of integrity and soul in each of his oil paintings. He achieves a unique exactitude through the medium but also draws upon a tremendous amount of depth, claiming more than a simple connection with his subjects.

Although some figureheads he depicts fall short of the limelight in the popularised mainstream, the romantic undertone of Harnden’s perception is revealed as every character he paints is essentially a hero in his eyes.

In his time and place, Lee Harnden is a catalyst of ‘subterranean representation’. Unfortunate for him as it is for many true artisans, his work will speak volumes much louder in generations yet to come.

Theory Of Face – Demz Sqidz EP Review

29 03 2011

At some point during 2010 the words Theory Of Face rippled throughout the community, it wasn’t long before those few words became associated with mentions of a master DJ, teaming up with a powerhouse of rhyme and production…..Cunts got scared and rightfully so.

It wasn’t until the guys over at Ironlak released their brand new Reload Cans, late last year, that the public truly became aware of the dangerousness they were facing. With the cover artwork produced by gaff artist Sofles, you could be confused into thinking that this release has something to do with graff…..don’t be fooled. Having shelved the alcohol for this release, Demz Sqidz is the pot smoking love child to Adfu’s (Adroit Effusive), and Trials (Funkoars) brand new exploration in the world of hip hop infused psycadellica, born from their  common love of stoner rock and spontaneity. The track that lead this wave of  banging drums and hip hop drenched in dirty guitar riffs was Cambodian Rock, one of the 6 murderous tracks you’ll find on this exceptional EP.

“We’re still pretty much just stumbling our way through learning our instruments at the moment so everything you hear under that banner is the bastard child produced at each session, start to finish, wrap up in a day and hopefully capture the moisty magic type shit”. – Trials

Don’t go into this album expecting slouch-ish production, cliche cuts or rhymes that sound like they were written by your average mid-day rapping stoner. The production here is first class. Adfu destroys the wax with devastating cuts and Trials hits the mic like a mad man sex addict, fapping off to Kate Miller-Heidke.  The guys really have brought things to a whole new playing field with the Demz Sqidz release, its undeniably tasty music. Demz Sqidz sounds evil, full of feedback, panic, mania and we are completely sure what type of music you’d call it, but people are going crazy for it!! Be prepared to be annihilated with you first hit, sit down roll up a fatty and start Facing the fuck out!!!

Theory Of Face serves up 8 out of 8 Sqidz legz for this one.

Sofles Exhibition: Adelaide Oct 7

22 09 2010
Ironlak and Bull and Bear are proud to present the South Australian debut of Russell Fenn aka Sofles, with a four-day exhibition in the heart of Adelaide city.
Notorious graffiti figure. Prodigious talent. Sofles has been both reviled and embraced by the media over his ten-year career, which began as a graffiti artist in Brisbane, Australia. After a well-publicized conviction in 2009, Sofles burst onto the scene with various sold-out exhibitions, collaborations with artists such as Anthony Lister, Ben Frost and Revok, and contracts with the likes of Red Bull, Myer, Adidas, and Toohey’s.
Returning from a tour of New York and Los Angeles, Sofles has chosen Adelaide for his first interstate exhibit, with new works on canvas featuring his signature mash up of aerosol, acrylics and oils, rendering evocative imagery in explosive colour. The progression from graffiti to canvas was a natural one, explains Sofles.
“Not much has changed, really. I’m painting every day, using the same tools, applying the same techniques, to a different platform, with a different audience. The work is finer, more considered, but my graffiti influence has been really well received.”
Sofles imagery is wide and varied, with collages of mind-bending abstraction melting into intricate form, perfect snapshots of the artist’s wild imagination. Sofles’ ability to create depth and detail with aerosol is unmatched, and combined with his bold use of colour renders pieces so distinctive they have firmly set Sofles reputation as one of Australia’s most watched contemporary artists.
This not-to-be missed exhibition runs at the Bull & Bear bar and restaurant from 6pm Thursday October 7th until Sunday October 10th.
