Mailer Daemon – Always On The Grind (feat. Jeswon, The Tongue, & P Smurf)

4 04 2013

Persian blooded, American born, Malaysian bred, and Sydney based beat-maestro Mailer Daemon has established himself as an exciting and innovative producer. Having emerged from a deep long secluded winter in the studio with talk of an amazing debut record, the entree lead single for which does not disappoint.

mailer daemon

With a Depeche Mode meets Kanye musical palette, Mailer crafts an anthem with Always on the Grind. The record stars three top Sydney MC’s: Jeswon, The Tongue, & P Smuf; our protagonists paint a narrative journey into the world of job-juggling Sydney musicians. Sharing the story of untold bedroom artists, expressing the idealism of oppurtunistic dreamers, and voicing the relentless passion required in the path for success; Always on the Grind packs the punch of a familiar anthem.

Innovation and diversity have been Mailer Daemon’s ethos through his musical journey from Indie-Electro (Just Where You Want Me ft. Nik Valentino), Indie-Hop (Keep On Moovin ft. Peach), and Electro-Pop (Bad Move Baby Ft. Catcall). Not to mention a solid slew of remixes for artists such as Bag Raiders, The Panics, Killa Queens, & The Herd.

The lyrical vision, theme, and format of this latest offering have been craft-fully aligned and refined to resonate with the Australian audience at large; the beat is supported by a sonic-scape that characterises the trending fusion-centric Sydney club sound. The hook cuts through infectiously and immediately, hosting a design that is strong for the radio format as well as a solid club-banger.

Always On The Grind demonstrates Mailer’s ability to craft modern pop music with street aesthetics; further solidifying his sound as accurately representing fresh Australian hip hop, holding relevance in the ever-evolving club climate, and keeping ahead of the times through trend-setting musical innovation.

Stay tuned for the release dates of Mailer’s Debut EP and accompanying live headline national tour.

Sketch The Rhyme – Adelaide Fringe

17 03 2013

Featuring visual artists, hip hop MCs and a full live band, Sketch The Rhyme is a brilliantly unique game show where freestyle rapping meets fast paced illustration and live animation in a number of hilarious improvised games, inspired by Pictionary, Celebrity Heads and Mr Squiggle. Sketch The Rhyme is a fresh, fast and funny interactive hip hop game show where speed drawing meets freestyle rapping to the sounds of a live band.

sketch the rhyme adelaide

Inspired by Mr Squiggle and Pictionary, this game-show-with-a-twist is made up of a series of playoffs between the artists and the rappers. The artists speed-sketch pictures relevant to a theme, topic or clue and project them onto a large screen for the rappers and audience to see. The MCs then freestyle their response in rhyme, whether its improvising a story, guessing the catch-phrase or trying to deduce the identity of the dead celebrity drawn before them. The audience plays the vital role of judging the rounds – their cheers letting the rappers know they’ve guessed correctly.

Big Village is proud to present the first East Coast tour and Adelaide Fringe Festival season of Sydney-based live art hip hop gameshow Sketch The Rhyme. The strikingly entertaining show pits teams of artists and rappers against each other in a fast-paced, MC-driven battle of wits, played out with the accompaniment of a live band, and not-so-serious nods to famed drawing duels: Pictionary and the legendary Mr Squiggle.

Conceived by Big Village Records MC, label manager and creative director Rapaport, Sketch The Rhyme was developed during the 2008 Underbelly Festival, Carriageworks, through collaborations between esteemed visual artists, freestyle MCs and improvising musicians. Spurred on by the sheer fun and creativity of those initial brainstorming sessions Sketch The Rhyme has gone onto to feature at Edinburgh Fringe Festival [2011], Woodford Folk Festival [2009 & 2010], Melbourne Fringe [2009] and the Sydney Comedy Festival Great Debate.

Bringing together Big Village MCs Rapaport, P.Smurf from Daily Meds and Jeswon from Thundamentals Sketch The Rhyme teams the label mates with artists Claire Nakazawa, Duckman, Sam Clouston, Edgarr and Mie Nakazawa, whose expertise in a range of visual disciplines from street art and graffiti, to comics, cartoons and painting creates one hell of an engaging hip hop show.

Ishu – Way To Go feat. Mighty Joe

22 10 2012

A killer flow from California’s Mighty Joe, paired with Ishu’s big beats and sample trickery, Way To Go is the first peek at the new album Hand Made, due for release in November, 2012.

Produced after they met in Melbourne and worked on the MoneyKat album release, the track discusses the topic of which direction to take in life, with conscious lyrics and driving hip hop beat.

An apt topic for the duo, who met when Mighty Joe was travelling from his native land of the USA, not long after Ishu’s debut LP A World In Progress which was written whilst travelling abroad. A World in Progress enjoyed support nationwide earning the producer a spot on various stages including the Dub Shack at Peat’s Ridge Festival, and the support slot for Joelistics Voyager tour. The main single Progress (feat. Mantra) was chosen as Catch of the Day on triple j’s ‘Mornings with Zan’ show.

The new album Hand Made will be available in November and features artists Mantra, Jeswon (Thundamentals), Candice Monique, One Sixth and Omar Musa. Equal parts dancefloor ready hip hop and downtempo electronic soul grooves, Hand Made’s production ranges from chopped sample based melodies to synth infused rhythms, drawing the listener in to an epic soundscape from start to finish.

Sky’High – Forever Sky’High (Out Now)

25 05 2012

Some people just won’t get it. They’ll see the rough and miss the diamond. Others will hear the raw aggression and recognise the ideas, hooks and melodies are undeniable proof of one of the most exciting voices to emerge in local hip hop yet. Sky’High diversifies and illuminates the possibilities of what’s going on here, giving volume to an Australian voice the mainstream generally shut down.

The creative fearlessness of Sky’High’s debut not only hits the mark but crashes through it. Whether it’s the grime of Reign, or the hip hop of Don Dada or Forever Gone, she remorselessly smashes it outta the park. But it’s when Sky reveals her vulnerability in the brutal yet achingly beautiful ‘Nuclear Love’ that the listener stops dead in their tracks.

This is why else world-renowned NZ producer P-Money pursued her—the first Australian act he’s overseen. It’s why Elefant Traks got on deck and why Duck Down artist David Dallas collaborated on the album. It’s also why Rolling Stone and Sydney Morning Herald pinpointed her out as an artist to watch.

Sky’high is not the softly-spoken female you’re expecting. There is no other genre that could unearth someone as special as her. Uncompromisingly tough and endearingly cheeky, Sky’High’s invigorating talent will disarm you and challenge your perceptions.
What do you see in the rough?

Thundamentals – Foreverlution: ‘Paint The Town Red’ Video Clip

14 09 2011

Building upon Sleeping On Your Style’s outstanding production, eclectic musical influences and compelling rhymes, Foreverlution is, as the title would suggest, a deliberate blend of timeless organic tones interspersed with more contemporary sounding influences.

Producing almost the entire record, DJ Morgs has really stepped up-to the plate. In the words of Tuka: “the content itself reflects our growth as a band and also the knowledge/skills we’ve managed to gather since our self-titled debut was released in 2008. In this life, it appears that change is the only constant. The one thing you can truly be sure of is that everything will eventually change. The ideology behind Foreverlution casts a positive spin on this concept. Rather than watching the world go by or letting yourself fall into a state of complacency, involve yourself within it. Learn from your past with the intention of moving forward and growing into a better version of yourself. As the world evolves, evolve with it.” From the ominously dulcet foghorn that intro’s opening track Holla through the big band enthused bombasticism of Calm In The Chaos, lead single Paint The Town Red and the Parisian swell of Check My Fresh (feat. Vida-Sunshyne), the first half of Foreverlution drips with 1920′s speakeasy soul.

But though this and an old school RnB flavor permeate the record right through to the laid back Sunday afternoon slide of closing track Easy, contemporary influences also ride high throughout, from the future beat and blip electro splice of Dimension 3 through the rolling dubstep bass of Thunda Cats feat. Dysphemic. All in All Foreverlution is, as best described by Jeswon: “a contrast between elements that will remain classic “Forever”, and elements that suggest an “Evolution” into something greater and as yet undefined”.

For the cover art for the album the band worked closely with their artist (Pencil Rebellion) to develop strong imagery that would further emphasise this Foreverlution concept. Namely, a thematic continuation of the young boy portrayed on the Sleeping On Your Style cover art who has now grown into a pioneer space traveler equipped with advanced technologies, armour and space craft, a visual metaphor for the growth in the music. The band were presented with two cover possibilities from the artist but as they couldn’t decide, asked Facebook fans & Twitter followers to vote on which the preferred should be. The vote again went straight down the middle and hence the decision was made to run with a dual cover.

Check out the most recent Thundamentals Interview regarding the album Foreverlution here.
