Quakers is a 35-member hip-hop collective centered on a core trio of producers – 7-Stu-7, Katalyst and Fuzzface, who is better known as Geoff Barrow of Portishead. Russia With Love, a new track featuring Coin Locker Kid, is up for free download, production by Katalyst.
“When I made this beat, I knew who to send it to, the track is in 7/8 and seemed like it might be a bit of a challenge, but Coin Locker Kid came up with the goods the first time round.” – Katalyst.
Quakers’ self-titled debut album is in stores now, a new clip for the track Russia With Love feat. Coin Locker Kid has just dropped you can check that out above. The clip was shot by CLK & a friend on a digi stills camera, edited laptop style.
Stones Throw debuts the most exciting hip hop project since Dilla and Madlib joined forces for Jaylib – a 40+ track album from production outfit Quakers, featuring Golden Era crate dug beats and visceral verses from the likes of Dead Prez, Jonwayne, Aloe Blacc and so many more.
Quakers consists of local beatmaster Katalyst, Fuzzface (a.k.a. Portishead‘s Geoff Barrow), and 7-Stu-7, a triage of venerable producers in their own right whose combined efforts prove boom-bap is far from dead. Fuzzface is better known as Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, a long-time Stones Throw supporter in touch with Peanut Butter Wolf since championing the Jaylib album back in 2004. 7-Stu-7 is Portishead’s engineer and in-house producer at Invada Records in the UK. Katalyst is one of the most respected producers in Australia and a partner in Invada Records.
Disillusioned with much of the hip-hop around them, the like-minded producers set out to create the type of rap record they’d want to listen to. That meant gathering one of the most varied arrays of talent ever seen on a hip-hop record. Rather than just sending beats to the hottest names of the moment, the producers sought out genuine collaborators, regardless of whether they were legendary or simply stumbled upon around the world wide web. Invitations were sent out to golden era legends such as Prince Po and The Pharcyde’s Booty Brown, indie rap titans such as Dead Prez and Phat Kat, and of course some of StonesThrow’s finest: Aloe Blacc, Guilty Simpson, MED and newest signings Jonwayne and Dave Dub all make memorable contributions. There are also some lesser known talents present: band-favorite Coin Locker Kid, Lyric Jones, Estee Nack & more hold it down with their more celebrated peers.
Yet for all the vocal talent, it’s often Quakers’ stellar production that takes center stage, tying together the albums 40+ tracks into a cohesive whole. Heavy beats come thick and fast, from the horn-heavy stomp of Fitta Happier to the devastating synthesizer abuse of Belly of the Beast and beyond. Quakers music first appeared in Banksy’s 2011 film Exit Through The Gift Shop and, in case you’re wondering, the name comes from ‘earthquake‘. They’re here to shake the foundations.
This months aahh album art award has to go to the Quakers CD. Featuring a beautiful 2 CD layout and killer design, the cover could have been a nightmare with the 40+ track list, instead we have all the artists layed out on the back with an easy to read tracklist on the inside fold out. If you want to check out more download the Hip-Hop Quake Mix by Katalyst, a 40-minute set featuring some of the work that has inspired the project. You can get that from iTunes here or the Stones Throw RSS feed here. More information on that can be found here.
Born from an Indonesian father and a white Australian mother, Sydney resident Mr. Clean aka Andrew Wiradilaga, has been doing his thing in the Sydney scene since the late 90′s. Finding his name with stable crew Ear Infection which consisted of Sleeping monk, APEX (R.I.P) & Az One.
Around the beginning of local Hip Hop’s prominent rise to radio and othe forms of media, Mr Clean became a proud father to his 1st born son. Rap took a back seat, it wasn’t until 4 years later that a combination of elements brought him back to hunger. The rise of his friend and producer Katalyst and the buzz of certain artists, you could probably say it was a mixture of support and frustration that pushed rapping back to the forefront of his mind.
So now a father of 3, yes 3, another two beautiful daughters, Mr Clean is defiantly back for some hard yak. He has been the guest on some notable local releases, including Celcius’s 1st album, Dirtbox Kings mixtape and the extended version of All You’ve Got on Katalyst’s – Whats Happening 12 inch. Mr Clean also appeared on Katalyst’s latest studio album Deep Impressions. The track Black Dragon had been hand picked by triple j’s head honcho Richard Kingsmill and is now getting a little extra play. Mr Clean has just come off national tour with Katalyst & Steve Spacek.
Mr Clean has been working on a full length album for the past two years and it is nearly complete. Working with producers Katalyst, Colourd Noyz, P Money, Sandro & Smokin Jodes. His new video Hard Yak b/w Casket is the 1st single off the forth coming album due out mid 2012 entitled With A Vengeance. With many more things to come please give it up for the blue collar salesman, Father and Sydney spitter Mr Clean, some say better late than never… and in this case it is an ultimate example. You can grab the first single Hard Yak b/w Casket for free download below.

Internationally renowned, ARIA nominated producer Katalyst returns with new album Deep Impressions, set for release today via Invada Records / Remote Control. The follow up album to his highly acclaimed 2007 album What’s Happening, a former triple j feature album, Deep Impressions is Katalyst’s third full length album and his most impressive work to date.
The latest product of his audiophiliac obsession, Deep Impressions deconstructs and distils soul, hip hop, funk, jazz, reggae and electro influences into what is perhaps most accurately described as “the Katalyst sound“. Deep Impressions is a reflection of the large variety tunes that influence Katalyst’s own musical direction. On the title of the album, Katalyst says, “Writing music for me is a continual process so when it came time to put the third Katalyst album together I looked at the songs I had written and recorded for the new release. As a body of work it was clear that many styles of music have made a deep impression on me as a producer. Hence the name of my album.”
On Deep Impressions, Katalyst collaborated with the likes of Los Angeles hip-hop artist Bootie Brown (of The Pharcyde), Sydney’s own KweenG (KillaQueenz), underground legend Mr Clean, and upcoming North Carolina MC Coin Locker Kid. Katalyst also teams up with long-term collaborators Stephanie McKay (USA), Steve Spacek (UK), Hau (Koolism), and Jade MacRae.
Katalyst is Sydney-based producer Ashley Anderson, one of Australia’s most prolific producers. Over the past two decades Katalyst has risen to the top of the Australian hip hop and electronica scenes, receiving multiple ARIA and J Award nominations along the way. His reputation as one of Australia’s best producers has seen him collaborate with the likes of Geoff Barrow of Portishead, Aloe Blacc, Dead Prez, Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, J-Live, Finale, Frank n Dank, Diverse, Ugly Duckling, and Steve Spacek (who together form Space Invadas). Katalyst has performed alongside The Roots, Jack Johnson, Jurassic 5, DJ Shadow, The Black Eyed Peas and Mix Master Mike and Ben Harper, and has also performed at Splendour In The Grass, Big Day Out, Homebake, The Falls Festivals, and Good Vibrations.

Katalyst also dropped a free mixtape today tilted Back To Basic’s Vol. 1, which you can grab below by using the down arrow in the player. This is what Katalyst had to say about this little project.
“As I prepare to release my 3rd album, Deep Impressions, I put together this mix to share some of the music that had made an impression on my over my 20 years of collecting. I have drawn extensively from this resource in the creating of my own music, as have many that have gone before me. This is a collection of tunes that have been used in the creative process to make what we know as hip hop. Many of the songs are themselves classics that have a beautiful and still poignant message and vibe. Others contain fleeting moments of beauty that have been captured and reinterpreted to make modern day classics.Apart form a few sneaky edits (to highlight the moments used by some of the best producers to have turned on a sampler) the tunes are as they appear on the original wax. This series is dedicated to one of my music inspirations and heroes The Left Rev Eugene McDaniel’s who passed away 29th July 2011. If your reading this and don’t know who the great man was…… do yourself a favour and get familiar! This is Part 1…. more in the series to follow so stay tuned… “Peace, - KATALYST
