Katalyst announces 3rd album ‘Deep Impressions’ and drops a free mixtape ‘Back To Basics Vol. 1′

10 08 2011

Internationally renowned, ARIA nominated producer Katalyst returns with new album Deep Impressions, set for release on the 16th of September 2011 via Invada Records / Remote Control. The follow up album to his highly acclaimed 2007 album What’s Happening, a former triple j feature album, Deep Impressions is Katalyst’s third full length album and his most impressive work to date.

The latest product of his audiophiliac obsession, Deep Impressions deconstructs and distils soul, hip hop, funk, jazz, reggae and electro influences into what is perhaps most accurately described as “the Katalyst sound”. Deep Impressions is a reflection of the large variety tunes that influence Katalyst’s own musical direction. On the title of the album, Katalyst says, “Writing music for me is a continual process so when it came time to put the third Katalyst album together I looked at the songs I had written and recorded for the new release. As a body of work it was clear that many styles of music have made a deep impression on me as a producer. Hence the name of my album.”

On Deep Impressions, Katalyst has collaborated with the likes of Los Angeles hip-hop artist Bootie Brown (of The Pharcyde), Sydney’s own KweenG (KillaQueenz), underground legend Mr Clean, and upcoming North Carolina MC Coin Locker Kid. Katalyst also teams up with long-term collaborators Stephanie McKay (USA), Steve Spacek (UK), Hau (Koolism), and Jade MacRaeKatalyst also dropped a free mixtape today tilted Back To Basic’s Vol. 1, which you can grab below by using the down arrow in the player. This is what Katalyst had to say about this little project.

“As I prepare to release my 3rd album, Deep Impressions, I put together this mix to share some of the music that had made an impression on my over my 20 years of collecting. I have drawn extensively from this resource in the creating of my own music, as have many that have gone before me. This is a collection of tunes that have been used in the creative process to make what we know as hip hop. Many of the songs are themselves classics that have a beautiful and still poignant message and vibe. Others contain fleeting moments of beauty that have been captured and reinterpreted to make modern day classics. Apart form a few sneaky edits (to highlight the moments used by some of the best producers to have turned on a sampler) the tunes are as they appear on the original wax. This series is dedicated to one of my music inspirations and heroes The Left Rev Eugene McDaniel’s who passed away 29th July 2011. If your reading this and don’t know who the great man was…… do yourself a favour and get familiar! This is Part 1…. more in the series to follow so stay tuned… “ Peace, - KATALYST

Oxfam Australia presents: 3 things’ Hip Hop Approach

14 06 2011

3things, an initiative of Oxfam Australia, is back and joining forces with some of Australia’s best rappers, beat boxers, DJs, VJs and graphic artists, to create a hard-hitting hip hop event with a huge social conscience.

It’s the Hip Hop Approach – a 3things event that gets Australian hip hop acts talking about their opinions and solutions to global poverty and injustice. Artists will jam on the 3things they can do to help change the world for the better, demonstrating the 3things philosophy – that we can change the world, 3things at a time. Across two cities, 3things’ Hip Hop Approach will feature over 20 Aussie artists and acts. Both shows will be hosted by Kween G (of the KillaQueenz), and will feature visual jams by VJ Spook (VJ for the likes of Bliss N Eso and Snob Scrilla).

Sydney’s bill features OziBatla, Dialectrix with Joe New and Plutonic Lab, Tuka, The Last Kinection, DJ Gabriel Clouston, plus beatboxers Rivals and LC Beats. Melbourne’s bill includes The Tongue, Thundamentals, Joelistics, DJ Wasabi, plus more local MCs to be announced. On the night, hip hop heads can leave their mark on the live mural or drop 3things they can do to help change the world on the 3things handy cam. By the end of the event, hundreds of ideas on tackling global issues will accumulate – highlighting that our small actions combined can have a significant impact on bringing about a world without poverty. It’s an all-in jam, where anyone can have a say.

Tickets to 3things’ Hip Hop Approach are $5 on the door at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory, and at St Kilda’s Prince Bandroom. All proceeds will go to Oxfam Australia. 3things’ Hip Hop Approach coincides with the launch of the new look 3things website, 3things.org.au. 3things aims to build a generation of Australians who are aware of and taking action on global issues, by offering simple, personal and practical ways for young Australians to get involved and bring about positive change.
