Low Budget – Poolside

11 03 2012

Emerging from a cloud of cheap aftershave, Melbourne duo Low Budget return with their third release Poolside. Picking up where their 2009 sleeper hit Laserdisc left off, Poolside finds Low Budget continuing to hone their trademark boogie-driven bass-heavy brand of hip hop.

Early single A Hard Act To Follow features MC Gentleman Gene dropping quick-witted rhymes over DJ Debonair P’s greasy wild-west finger popping funk. Meanwhile, the second single Poolside finds Gene urging listeners to ‘slip, dip, dive’ into the shimmering depths of P’s pulsating, glossy production. With all vocals and production handled by the enigmatic pair of Gentleman Gene and Debonair P, the guest-free Poolside bears the trappings of the best straight-to-video movie – unpretentious, brainless, occasionally sleazy entertainment that doesn’t wear out its welcome.

Featuring ten songs (including new tracks and reanimated classics) blended together to create a seamless whole, the EP offers a listening experience that is uniquely cohesive. True renaissance men for the modern age, Poolside is independently released and distributed through Low Budget’s self-funded Gentleman’s Relief Records label, on myriad formats including vinyl, CD, digital download and cassette tape.

1. Black Tie Affair (Jacuzzi Mix)

The Psyde Projects – Orfd

14 11 2011
The Psyde Projects are happy to introduce to you their new single Orfd. The new EP leans towards a more electronic direction as you’ll notice with this single. Late last year The Psyde Projects went off on their first ever tour to promote their debut album, Welcome to Boomtown

After their very successful album launch, their hit single Kay-Pee-Em got picked up by Australia’s national music radio show, Triple J, which received great reviews and was played on high rotation!  This year they’re set to tour nationally again to promote their second 6 track EP aptly titled The Psyde Projects: Volume II. Whilst still staying true to the sampling culture of early hip-hop producers, this recent effort takes their sound into slightly more electronic territory.

Despite many other video clips today having big production costs, slick editing features, elaborate set designs and fancy graphics, we felt the need to take a slightly different path. One shot, one take. Cause that’s how we roll.

Low Budget – A Hard Act To Follow [Free Download]

7 03 2011

After a stellar 2009 in which ribald hip hop duo Low Budget released their sophomore longplayer Laserdisc to critical acclaim, slid their single Tailor Made into the AIR charts and won Triple J’s Unearthed competition to electrify Splendour in the Grass (not to mention notching up high-profile supporting slots for the likes of Nas and Redman & Method Man), the Melbourne pair is back in the laboratory putting the finishing touches on their latest piece of weird science – the forthcoming Poolside EP.

A Hard Act to Follow, the lead single from the EP, finds MC Gentleman Gene’s lothario flow skating with finesse over DJ/producer Debonair P’s finger-popping wild west funk. The result is a perfect illustration of the energetic back-to-basics approach that has both enticed a steady stream of fans and made the group a long-standing favourite on the live circuit. With A Hard Act to Follow, Low Budget delivers an enticing taste of what promises to be one of 2011’s most entertaining releases.

D’Opus and Roshambo – Past Time (2010)

24 02 2010

D’Opus & Roshambo are set to unleash some new material, and are spearheading it with their new single Come Find Out, featuring Chanel Cole on the hook (alternatively, off the hook, depending on how you look at it). Ross Garrett (D.Opus) and Rowan Thomson (Roshambo) met in 2003; D’Opus already an established DJ having supported everyone from the Jungle Brothers, Q*Bert, Mr. Thing and De La Soul, while emcee Ro had built up an impressive reputation for spreading the hip hop gospel through his long-running show on 2XX FM. Taking inspiration from the golden era of hip hop, classic funk and contemporary drum .n. bass, Ro & D.O came up with tight blend of story driven hip hop and rich musical diversity.

Having worked together for only a few months the lads released a promotional single The Question, which received national airplay on Triple J’s Hip Hop show. The duo’s first EP The Question was released in 2006 and distributed through legendary local imprint Obese Records. 2008 was a massive year for Ro & D.O, seeing the release of their full-length album The Switch (Mercury Switch/ Shogun).

Their single Million Dollar Bill proved to be a bona-fide Triple J favourite, spending a good portion of the year on high rotation, and being in the Top 100 most played songs on the station for the year. The duo received further support by being featured in JMag’s ‘Home & Hosed’ and Rosie’s Vox Pop saw her roaming the streets with Million Dollar Bill in hand. This culminated as D’Opus & Roshambo were chosen as part of Triple J’s Next Crop in November ’08 (alongside Cassette Kids, Pez, Philadelphia Grand Jury, Horrorshow, and Oh Mercy), with the second single The Basement, featuring Canberra indie-rockers Hancock Basement.

Far from being content with airwave representation, D’Opus & Roshambo played a flurry of shows in, supporting the likes of Krafty Kuts, Muph & Plutonic, TZU, Downsyde, Koolism, Low Budget and The Bamboos, and hitting the stage at Soundscape (Hobart) and Corinbank. Million Dollar Bill and The Basement also received rotation on ABC RAGE, JJJ TV and Channel V .

‘We’ve been very busy over the first few months of 2010 with a few major projects – the most significant of which is our second album ‘Past Time’which is nearing completion. It’s been another journey-and-a-half, but we are very happy with the way it is sounding and are very close to having it ready for release and giving it over to the people! Our second album has been a long time coming. It is the album I’ve wanted to make ever since I started this emcee thing. It is the type of record that has been in our minds waiting to be born and made real. Where ‘The Switch’ was about making the leap from EP to LP, from making casual songs to a full-blown full length record and taking ourselves more seriously, this new record will be our first cohesive album with a tangible theme at its core.
‘Come Find Out’ is the ‘we’re back’ and it is ‘business as usual’ tune – a throwback to the party braggadocio hip-hop tunes of old and paying homage to the classic Eric B & Rakim ‘def with the record’ concept, but with a modern D’O & Ro twist of course. It is about getting involved, getting into the vibe, checking out where our new sound is headed and joining us for the ride. Chanel jumps on board to give the hook an added disco-flavoured bounce and D’O's beat is full of thick rolling funk and a few surprises throw in for good measure.

2010 is upon us and D’Opus & Roshambo have something keen to share Come Find Out . You can grab the tune below or on the guys Triple J -Unearthed page here – don’t hesitate to drop a comment and let em know what ya think.

Funkoars Perform live with Ash Grunwald

7 02 2010

The Funkoars kicked off their Little Did I Know tour in Melbourne Friday night at the Hi Fi Bar. Hitting the road with Melbourne blues artist Ash Grunwald, the first leg of the tour was a night full of hip hop, roots and wicked live energy.
Melbourne duo Low Budget ripped up the first set of the night playing some dope hip hop tracks and getting the crowd into it from their opener, Freak Mystique to their killer closer, Tailor Made.
In between acts I spoke to The Funkoars’ DJ Reflux about performing live with Ash Grunwald.
“We’re not sure how the crowd will react to the shows, I mean, no one’s ever done something like this before… We’ve only had one proper rehearsal with Ash but we liked it enough we decided to launch a national tour together!”

Leaving the collaborative set til last, The Funkoars took the stage next and wasted no time getting the crowd hyped and rowdy. Before long, everyone was singing, “dirty money still paying the bills” and “this how hip hop supposed to sound”. Mid-set, MC Hons jumped into the crowd and crowdsurfed his way back onstage in time to finish one of his verses! Needless to say, this wouldn’t have worked if everyone’s hands weren’t already bouncing in the air.
A few other highlights of their set included the songs What I Want, Da Na Na, The Light You Burned and the crazy track What’s Your Malfunction.
Ash Grunwald was up next playing his own style of blues with two guys on MPCs and one on drums. The beats were huge and so was the singing as the crowd rocked out to Ash’s raspy voice and electric guitar riffs.
Ash and The Funkoars took the stage one last time, as promised, to blend their distinctive styles on the track Black Sally. Much to the crowd’s enjoyment (there were now at least five crowdsurfers and a decent moshpit) they played Show Money again as Reflux and Ash
had a play off from turntable scratching to guitar solo. The night closed with both groups’ latest single Little Did I Know and a hangover for many – just as the Oars intended.

We’d like to thank the newest member of our team at aaHH, Paul aka Joey Smiles, for hooking us up with this one. Look forward to some more great reading from this guy.

allaussie hip hop Interviews Trials from The Funkoars

4 02 2010

Emcee Trials, from The Funkoars’ spoke to allaussie hip hop recently as the group prepare to embark on a co-headlining tour with blues artist, Ash Grunwald. The tour kicks off in Melbourne this Friday night (5th Feb) and then heads up the coast to Sydney (12th Feb) and then on to Brisbane (13th Feb). We ask Trials about the move from Shogun to Golden Era, how The Funkoars teamed up with Ash Grunwald and find out what’s on the agenda for The Funkoars this year.

AAHH: Shogun unfortunately had to shut their doors recently. The Funkoars needed a new home and you seemed to find one pretty quickly at Golden Era Records, how has this transition gone?
TRIALS: The transition has been sweet. After Shogun closed it made it hard for a whole heap of people, obviously here and internationally, good guys, like Strutta and Ill Bill. It’s pretty wack, but we had no beef at all with the guys at Shogun, they were great and made it pretty easy for us. It’s just one of those things in this economic climate, I guess. With the move to Golden Era it’s given us another way to branch out, have more spots in Canada and The UK, and distribution wise. It’s good to have the resources of a major but without having their little sticky fingers involved. obviously to head over to Golden Era, with ya mates that you grew up with making hip hop, it makes things pretty easy.

AAHH: With the move to Golden Era we saw the release of The Hangover Premium Edition, which has the new track ‘Little Did I Know’ featuring Ash Grunwald. It’s an interesting dynamic, how did this relationship come about?
TRIALS:
Me and Sesta know the dude that does sound for the Hoods and knows Ash through his line of work. So we we’re talking about Ash and I told him that I liked what Ash was doing and he told Ash’s tour manager, turns out that he really liked our shit. So we starting emailing and at that time he was touring Canada. So he started doing up these rough little loops and he would send them over to me. We hooked it up so that when he got back from touring he came and stayed at my house for a few weeks. We made a fuck load of tracks. We used all the little rough fucking loops, and one of the first ones we worked on resulted in the new track, great timing for the Premium Edition really. So now I’ve started doing some production on Ash’s new album, so be on the look out for that.

AAHH: You have three huge shows coming up with Ash in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. Are you expecting some rowdy crowds?
TRAILS: They’re always good man. Melbourne is Ash’s hometown, so he has all his fans there, and we loving playing in Melbourne and up the coast, touring’s great. It helps that we all get on really well with Ash, and that we have similar musical tastes. I’ve never met a blues artist before that knows all the words to every Biggie song. It’s crazy! We’ve been messing around with something, so we may have to bust out a Biggie cover one night on tour. We’ll see.

AAHH: So The Funkoars have had a busy summer already, played a host of festivals, do you have a highlight?
TRIALS: OH Homebake was insanity. Incredible artists backstage and shit and then you had us HAHAHA. Sia was at Homebake and one of her spots were ruined by loud chants of ‘Fuck The Funkoars’. I sent Sia and email and was like, ‘Whats Happening Girl’? But no response yet!
AAHH: So you like to check out other acts at the festivals?
TRIALS: Yeah we check out the line up for sure, it’s good to catch the other bands.
AAHH: Who are you getting in to at the moment?
TRIALS: Oh the lads from Tame Impalar, those Perth guys….they are doing some dangerous psychedelic shit!
AAHH: So what’s keeping you busy for 2010?
TRIALS: Well I’ve just finished off the arrangements for Vents new album, it’s almost done. Just waiting for maybe one or two more joints, that should be dropping soon. Drapht’s also over here at the moment, he has been here for about a week. We’ve been working hard on his new album. That should be ready around July this year. Then maybe a Funkoars album later in the year!
AAHH: Are The Funkoars looking to work with any other ‘non’ hip hop acts on the next album?
TRIALS: Oh we’re never looking to work with any other artists as such, unless if like something fell into our laps….and it was some shit we liked!

AAHH: You’ve been making beats for years now and you have once mentioned that the beat you did for The Hilltop Hoods on the track, ‘Circuit Breaker’, was one of your favourite beats, is that still true?
TRIALS: Yeah it’s hard. Some of the work I’ve done with Drapht on his last album I’ve really enjoyed, some of the new stuff’s looking pretty good though. Circuit Breaker, and the story behind that track and how it was made….puts it up there with one of my favourites.

AAHH: Lastly, The Funkoars have just been announced to play at the Clipsal 500 alongside the Hilltop Hoods and Lowrider. All three crews are from Adelaide, are you looking forward to this hometown gig?
TRIALS:
Well I don’t know anything about cars really
HA but Adelaide’s always a great place to play. We like to save up all our good shit for Adelaide, we might play some new stuff or try some new things out. Adelaide always gets busy! We recently played a festival in Tassie with the Hoods and Lowrider, so we’re all pretty close. The drummer form Lowrider is always Trials ‘go to guy’ for drums HA!. Usually when we all get together we just drink whisky till we have seizes.

The Little Did I Know Tour kicks off with a massive night in Melbourne this Friday. Sydney and Brisbane need to look out the following week. If you haven’t got tickets for  any of the  shows, you can do so that by following the link here (via oztix.com.au.). As the flyer states, expect something special.
Low Budget support the Sydney and Melbourne legs, with Coalition Crew playing Brisbane.
