To celebrate the release of Black Stones, Lowrider will take their renowned live show on the road, hitting a series of spots all across the east coast throughout March and April and kicking things off in their hometown of Adelaide on Saturday February 16th. Since their debut release in 2008, Lowrider has embarked on an exciting transition from intimate hometown venues to sold-out national headline shows to coveted support slots on national tours for Alicia Keys, Lupe Fiasco and John Legend. In 2012, the band headed to the US for highly acclaimed performances in LA and at Austin’s famed SXSW festival.

Now in 2013, Lowrider present the fruit of their labour – Black Stones. For band members Joe, Scott, John and Paul, Black Stones scraps any grand preconceptions and allows the undeniable chemistry between the four of them to take control. Simple, focused and proud.

Lowrider – Days Of Boredom

5 12 2012

Adelaide four-piece Lowrider make an emphatic return with first single Days of Boredom, a gritty, confronting piece of alternative-soul that serves the first taste of their upcoming LP Black Stones.

days-of-boredom

Recorded over the past year between Red Bull’s Studios in Los Angeles and Chapel Lane Studios in Adelaide, Black Stones, the bands third studio album, is set for release on Friday 15th February 2013 through Illusive.

Without judgment or pretension, but perhaps a little frustration, Days of Boredom touches on modern life’s obsession with technology and social media over a catchy key riff, rolling basslines and a dense wall of crashing drums. It sets the tone for Black Stones, a stripped back and no nonsense approach from the band, showing distinct sonic progression from their previous material.

To celebrate, Lowrider played a sold out, intimate one-off show at Higher Ground in their hometown of Adelaide, December 1st. In addition to the new single, album and show announcement, Lowrider and Red Bull have partnered to release four behind-the-scenes videos (each Tuesday for the next month) showcasing their time at the Los Angeles Red Bull Studio and this year’s SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, exclusively on Red Bull Australia’s website.

LHA – Split Decision (Out Now)

23 09 2011

Sydney-based hip hop duo, LHA, announces the release of their debut album, Split Decision. Written and produced entirely by the duo, the album perfectly captures the ethos of LHA; soulful, catchy, heartfelt music to move body and mind.

LHA comprises Australian emcee Adikkal and Korean producer LeeHahn. Captivated by the idea that a song should move you inside and out, LHA make music full of provoking grooves. Crossing cultures and fusing elements of soul, funk on the bedrock of hip hop, they produce a distinct sound that, while gathering eclectic influences from music’s fringes, upholds an appeal for music fans across the globe.

Born and raised in Sydney, emcee Adikkal is a skilled freestyler, who draws on years of live experience with hip hop/funk/rock band, The Suitable Few. Having played alongside some of the biggest names in local hip hop including The Herd and Downsyde, he is as well versed live as he is in the studio. Effortlessly weaving honest and considered lyrics over LeeHahns’ production, Adikkal creates a powerful musical blend that is both sweet and raw.

Born in Seoul, Korea, LeeHahn moved to Australia 17 years ago. Having honed his talents as producer for Korean hip hop outfit J Daiz, LeeHahn brings a meticulous and soulful ear, combining live instruments with hard-hitting drums and cleverly chopped samples. The result is nothing short of expert.

Since releasing their debut EP It’s Time in 2009, LHA has received recognition and acclaim from critics and fans both locally and around the world. Their track That’s Just Life won a spot in the final 5 for the Launch Your Band competition, and was rated in the top 20 in its category in the International Song Writing Competition.

The duo has played extensively throughout Sydney, alongside artists such as Australian hip hop/soul band, Lowrider. Building on the hi-vibe of their recorded music, they enlist the assistance of their extended musical family – guitarist Nikko and bass player Gurg – to deliver not just a performance, but an explosive, live hip hop experience.

The first track from Split Decision, Keep It Movin, is a sophisticated, and stylish groove, with a video to match. Created by renowned Korean graphic artist, designer, VJ, professor and author, Parpunk, the clip is three and half minutes of animated music video class. This is cultural collaboration at its finest, and LHA clearly has it down pat.

The brand new single, This Is Your Life, is at radio this week. Ignited by the powerful lyrics of Adikkal and his fight for self-actualisation, the track is driven home by the soulful but commanding beats of LeeHahn. Directed by Kane Yoon, the video is another stylish offering from the duo, who find elegance in the ordinary with ease. The end result is powerful and inspirational.

Joelistics – Voyager Records Episode 2

20 05 2011

This is the second episode of Voyager Records, Joelistics’s new series. Things are pretty bad in the future, everyone is pretty much dead. In amongst this post-apocalyptic backdrop, Joelistics decides to open a record store with six records and a box of cdr-s. This is his story.

The adventures of Joelistics continue in Voyager Records Episode 2
http://www.joelistics.com
Written and directed by Peter Brennan

Introducting Voyager, the debut solo record from producer, rapper and singer Joelistics (TZU)

Regarded as one of the most charismatic lyricists in hip hop, Joelistics is one of the most gifted freestylers to have never battled; a true storyteller influenced by shoegazer electronica and folk as much as classic boom bap hip hop. Self-produced and self-assured, Voyager was written in France, Mongolia, China and Australia, tapping into themes of travel, modern world paranoia and growing older.

As part of TZU, Joelistics garnered AMP and J Award nominations and toured the country countless times, playing every major festival. In solo mode, he relishes the freedom to creatively stretch out, exploring universal themes through a laconic personal insight. On the song Head Right he throws down “I’m half Caucasian, still very Asian, a mad variation of what you call Australian”. While the intoxicatingly evocative Heart Remains, shows he’s not just an observer, but rather, part of the land: “the languid heat make sleepless nights, lazy speak, mosquito bites, old timers who drive the road trains rolling cigarettes single handed …I saw it all clear from a house on a hill in a country far away and I thought to myself till the day that I die that’ll be where my heart remains”.

Did we forget to mention this is all wrapped up in some damn catchy shit?

This is a hip hop record that can’t be ignored by those not into the genre. Any preconceptions can’t be applied to the ambition and musical fearlessness that is Voyager by Joelistics. Fresh from captivating crowds on the sold-out Herd tour, Joelistics is gearing up to do it all again – this time joining Lowrider on their Hold On national tour. Joelistic’s debut solo record Voyager is out May 20 on Elefant Traks and his new single Glorious Feeling in now playing on Triple J and is available for purchase below.

Lowrider – Round the World (Remix feat. Suffa MC)

9 11 2010

The crowd went crazy for Lowriders new remix of Round the World featuring Suffa MC of the Hilltop Hoods on Friday the 5th at the Gov! The only way to hear this new single is on your radio, so if you missed out make sure to request it on your favorite radio station.

Bigger. Brighter. Bolder: Just three words to nail the irresistible sound of hot Adelaide quartet Lowrider’s second album, Round the World.

Having forged a reputation as one of the most mesmerising live acts around and with one acclaimed album already under their belt, the foursome of Paul Bartlett (drums/beats), brother John (piano/keys), Joe Braithwaite (vocals) and Scott Duncan (bass) are at the top their game and ready to take their unique blend of soul and funk to the world.

Since forming in Adelaide in 2004, Lowrider have supported some of the biggest acts in Australia and the world (Christina Aguilera, Lupe Fiasco, Alicia Keys). Also performing countless festivals including Big Day Out, Blues and Roots, Pyramid Rock and A Day On The Green. After proving they could match it with the best on stage, it was that smooth spontaneous live sound they wanted to capture on the album, embellished with the almost limitless possibilities the studio can bring.

The stunning result intertwines threads from the four members’ different tastes and backgrounds into a seamless whole. The band has built on its proven formula by adding echoes of Motown and Stax, Latin tinges and slinky funk to create a compelling catalogue of love songs, haunting ballads, party jams and even socio-political comment.

The first single, Here We Go, is an irresistible invitation to the party (“come right in and take a beer, it’s all on us!”), with a driving bass line and wicked horns that will have you thirsting for more. At the other end of the spectrum is What Keeps You Here, a heartfelt, rhythmically intriguing piano-driven ballad that gives Joe’s soulful vocals a chance to truly shine.

The astute, scathing, Latin-infused Twenty Thirteen sees the band questioning society’s slavish devotion to the corporate dollar (“don’t become the cattle of the rich man”), and the sweeping strings and sparse handclaps of the lush, epic Break Me display the band’s sensitive side.

Upbeat, inspirational Hold On, with its swirling organ intro (“Hold on to me, a time will come when you see the best of me and we’ll go higher”) brings to mind the best of vintage soul whereas the gentle, jazzy album closer Keep The Pace provides a thoughtful and fitting finale.

Lowrider – Here We Go

5 05 2010

Here We Go is the first taste of Lowrider’s sophomore album, Round the World, which is due for release in early July.

After their first official release, 2008’s Diamond Amongst The Thieves, was near unanimously praised as one of the finest Australian albums of the year (‘there are truly no missteps on Diamond Amongst The Thieves’ – Drum, ‘This album is one of those rare gems in Australian music’ 9/10 – Sauce), there has been a huge level of anticipation for its follow-up.
With a little help from New York’s legendary Chops Horns, Lowrider have returned with a bold, neck-breaking, hard-hitting party jam. Round The World is an eclectic masterstroke, and one that the Adelaide four-piece wanted to kick off with a bang. Enjoy!
