International collaborations are rare enough, but rarely does the world get a chance to admire the creative output of two such overbearing characters as M-Phazes (Australia) and Emilio Rojas (US). Together they are Phaze One, a throwback to the days of hip hop group collaborations that produced a single pioneering sound; a collaborative effort that follows in the footsteps of DangerDoom, Jaylib and the masterful relationship of the Foreign Exchange.
After two years of prophetically crafting their imminent self-titled release, in 2011 the stage was finally set for the two artists to throw back the curtain and reveal the fruits of their labour. Both have enjoyed considerable solo success; M-Phazes is a musical phenomenon in his own right, with a definitive signature style that has seen his production on albums alongside Pharoahe Monch, Talib Kweli, M.O.P, Grammy Award Winner Amerie and a plethora of acclaimed musical pioneers.
Emilio himself is no stranger to the golden aura of success; having been described by DJ Green Lantern as one of America’s most anticipated up and coming artists, he’s released a string of successful mixtape’s that have drawn the considerable talents of Grammy winners and platinum musicians. His latest work is a testament to aspiring artists, and his diligent work ethic has seen him collaborate with Shady Records signee Yelawolf, chart climbing sensation B.o.B, as well as Styles P, Nottz, Killer Mike and a whole stable of influential musicians.
To put it bluntly, Phaze One isn’t an Emilio Rojas or M-Phazes release featuring the talents of their other half, it is a true collaborative effort where both artists are in tune to the rhythm of each other’s well timed and well placed steps. Briggs new single So Dangerous is out now on iTunes.
Not only does Trials of the Funkoars contribute vocals to So Dangerous he also put together a remix exclusively for the single release.A filmclip for the single will follow in February, until then you can get So Dangerous by clicking here.
From the moment Briggs dropped his self-released debut EP, the brilliant and groundbreaking Homemade Bombs (2009), it was obvious to everyone that this marked the arrival of a powerful and unique voice on the scene. His indigenous roots and his rural upbringing in the small country town of Shepparton (Victoria) gave him a perspective like no one else. Powered by a rapid-fire, melodic, direct approach, Briggs was as funny as he was deep.
It was this rare combination of characteristics that lead to him being embraced by some of the wiser and more experienced heads in the local scene. The newcomer was invited to open for the likes of Adelaide’s Funkoars and Perth’s Drapht; this was followed by a spate of support slots for visiting international artists including Necro, Ghostface Killah, Dilated Peoples, M.O.P. and Pharoahe Monch.
Then came a great opportunity – the opening slot on a sold-out national tour with the Hilltop Hoods. The Hoods instantly connected with Briggs and were so impressed by his performance they took him along on their 2009 European tour, and eventually offered him a home at their fledgling label Golden Era Records. All this has paved the way for the imminent release of his debut album, The Blacklist. While Homemade Bombs gave us a taste of what he can do, The Blacklist is nothing short of brilliance. It’s a genuinely unique symphony of words, thoughts and sounds that have the potential to propel him onto the national stage overnight. The album features a plethora of bangers but the standout by far is the breathtaking lead track The Wrong Brother. Briggs got a bit of help making The Blacklist from a few of his hard-hitting colleagues. The production genius behind Homemade Bombs – namely Jaytee, 76 and the Funkoars’ Mr Trials – are back at it again, but this time they’re joined by the likes of Suffa, Merlin The Wizard, Pokerbeats and Kelakovski. Guest vocalists include Hilltop Hoods, Trials and Dylan Smith (of Direct Influence).
Who can guess what’s gong to happen once Briggs drops The Blacklist? All we know for certain is that it’s going to make you laugh, jump and possibly seek medical attention.

M-Phazes is the perfect example of a diamond in the rough. Born and raised in the Gold Coast of Australia and relatively isolated from Hip-Hop culture, M-Phazes has carved a strong niche for himself that has allowed his production to be heard on a global scale.
Drawing inspiration from legendary producers such as Battlecat, Pete Rock and the late J-Dilla, M-Phazes has has formulated his own sound over the years that can be defined by soulful melodies coupled with loose, smacking drums.
Landing his first U.S. placement in 2005 on Supastition’s “Chain Letters”, M-Phazes has been on a steady climb and hasn’t looked back. In March of 2008, M-Phazes earned himself a first place victory at Sha Money’s prestigious One Stop Shop Producers Conference Beat Battle, an event that’s held annually in Phoenix, Arizona. M-Phazes‘ production was judged by a panel of legendary producers and artists that consisted of DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Swizz Beats, DJ Toomp, No I.D, Hi-Tek, Don Cannon, Chamillionaire and of course, Sha Money. “M-Phazes blew me away with his sound” – Jake One.
The last round of the battle was held on Sunday, March 9th, a date which marked the 11th anniversary of the passing of the late Notorious B.I.G. In remembrance of this date, M-Phazes prepared a track titled ‘Brooklyn‘ that was played in honor of the late Biggie. From the first kick to the last snare, this tribute beat caused the entire judging panel and audience to literally leap out of their seats! This track received a standing ovation that secured M-Phazes victory. Shortly after, this tribute beat went on to become the backdrop for Joell Ortiz’s forthcoming single off his new album which has since been licensed for the major motion picture Brooklyn’s Finest featuring Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke & Wesley Snipes (directed by Antwon Fuqua, Training Day).
Since the One Stop, M-Phazes has received an Aria Award for his production on Bliss N Eso’s “Flying Colors album, has had his production featured on two college chart topping singles, has signed a landmark deal with Mushroom Publishing and has landed several placements, including a major label placement with Amerie (Feenix Rising Entertainment/Island Def Jam Music Group) as well as a co-production credit alongside super producer JR Rotem (Belugah Heights) for his artist Mann.
To date, M-Phazes has built a very strong discography that includes placements with several key players in today’s hip-hop marketplace that include Pharoahe Monch, CL Smooth, M.O.P., Mela Machinko, Royce Da 5’9″, Emilio Rojas, Heltah Skeltah, Donny Goines, Cory Gunz, Elzhi (Slum Village), Freeway, Marvin Priest (son of Maxi Priest), Termanology, Sean Price, Sadat X and more.
M-Phazes is living proof that no matter where you’re from, you can make an impact on the rest of the world. As his dreams become a reality, M-Phazes places no boundaries on his craft that he hopes will allow him the opportunity to work with artists that define a wide brush stroke of today’s urban music climate.
