Emerging from Sydney’s vibrant hip hop community in 2006, the duo known as Mind Over Matter quickly established themselves as artists to be reckoned with. Through their highly lauded mixtape For Our Hip Hoppers, they successfully built and earned a loyal fan base nationally. In 2008 Mind Over Matter released their Debut album entitled Keepin’ It Breezy to industry wide praise, culminating in a nomination for Australian album of the year in Triple J’s J Mag. With the success of this debut combined with their pre-established following cemented by back to back outstanding releases, emcees Willow and Smiles Again have toured the country extensively and have seen their following grow to heights that once didn’t seem possible.

After hitting sold out venues in a multitude of locations across the country Mind Over Matter have proved themselves to be one of the most highly charismatic, energetic, and creative live acts this country has to offer. To date the duo have played along side an incredible range of international acts including Jebediah, Masta Ace, Wordsworth, Planet Asia, DJ Crazy Caz (the late Tupac’s DJ), Mystro (UK) as well as Australian heavy weights Bliss n Eso (Mind Over Matter were selected as support for the trio on their National Get Loose tour and Flying Colours Tour), Muph n Plutonic, Pegz, Drapht, Downsyde, Pez & 360, Phrase & DJ Flagrant, Def Wish Cast and many more.

The dynamic Sydney duo have also performed at multiple festivals, both locally and interstate and have even hit stages internationally, travelling to Thailand as well as Osaka, Japan, performing some incredibly well received shows as well as filming a video for a collaboration track titled How We Get Down.  With the fantastic reception of their debut LP Keepin’ It Breezy, Mind Over Matter have been added to a multitude of radio play lists nationally, including Triple J, FBI and many more. Clipped Wings featuring Vast Aire, a stand out track from the album became the highly sought after single of the week on Sydney’s FBI 94.5FM, further validation of this crew’s talent and appeal.  Always staying focused and productive, M.O.M. featured on and hosted the Who’s Got Next Mixtape, a project showcasing some of Australia’s best up and coming talent and since then have completed their highly anticipated second mixtape, rightfully titled Free The Wolves.  In 2010 Mind Over Matter received huge recognition for their stand out feature verses on Bliss N Eso’s #1 Aria Charting album Running on Air.   As a result of the feature and surrounding buzz the group joined Bliss N Eso on all dates of their nationally sold out Down By The River tour.

Rappers In Wonderland
is the first single from their much anticipated sophomore offering, Just Like Fireworks – scheduled for release early next year. Rappers In Wonderland features an energetic, guitar driven beat with punching percussion and 60′s surf undertones; produced by their DJ, DJ Ila and mixed by Matik (Pez/Seth Sentry) the track sees Willow and Smiles exchange trademark clever, tongue in cheek wordplay. The song is rounded out nicely by an infectious, chant style chorus and serves as a polished and impressive reintroduction to the group.

Maggot Mouf – You’re All Ears (July 16)

30 05 2010

Maggot Mouf starting in 98 writing raps in government flats. He then moved on to the open mic and battle scene – holding it down throughout the ACT. After years of burning weak cunts and getting a name for himself, he co-formed Canberra’s alikeminds crew in 2002 and took the live show scene by storm supporting the likes of Jungle Brothers, Braintax, Disorder, Mystro, Lyrical Commission, Reason, and Hospice Crew just to name a few.

In 2005 Maggot Mouf relocated to Melbourne and met up with old Canberra counterparts, the Hospice Crew, which saw the recording of Read ‘Em and Weap. The song made it to the monolithic Visiting Hours project, and Maggot Mouf has since scooped up beats and worked on projects with numerous Hospice members and Melbourne locals. allaussie Hip Hop Interview US emcee Okwerdz

7 04 2010

You were born and raised in the US, tell us a bit about yourself and what kind of style you present through your hip hop?
Im from Stockton California, been rapping since i was 17 or so. Honestly my music represents alot of different things, i am influenced by alot so i really try to encompass everything. I’m still heavily involved in the freestyle scene, freestyling is how i started rapping in the first place so i will always be doing it and incorporating it in my live shows. Freestyle is truly one of my favorite parts of rapping.

The Source Magazine, honored you with the coveted “Unsigned Hype” award (same honor bestowed to legends such as Notorious B.I.G., DMX, Eminem) in March 2009. What was that like?
It was a crazy honor to me because I obviously grew up reading the Source magazine as a kid and Unsigned Hype was always something I wanted to get so it was dope to actually achieve that.

So what’s been keeping you busy lately?
I just dropped 2 compilations (Fresh Coast Non-Perishables vol 1-2) and a Mixtape (The Off Season) both available on Itunes and amazon.com. Now that those are out of the way I am working on the album now, should be fully produced by Hallway Productionz. They have been doing alot of Ice Cube and WC’s beats and various other shit for E-40, The Game, etc. And did I mention they are from ALSO from Stockton? cheaaa! haha

On The Off Season Mixtape you hooked up with a few international guest, from your perspective, UK emcee Mystro and also The Hilltop Hoods. How did this track come about?

I think it was maybe the 2nd time I was in Australia, for like a month, I was really getting into Australian Hip Hop and everyone was just telling me how awesome the Hilltop Hoods were and naturally when I heard The Calling and The Hard Road I loved it. Luckily we had a mutual friend and they had known about me as well so we linked up on there album. When I came out to the Hoods concert  with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, that’s when I met Mystro and we recorded the joint “Do Not”, the rest is history haha

What are your perceptions of hip hop in Australia?
Australia has always had a very hungry, open minded, and welcoming scene with bunch of really dope artists as well as a super flourishing battle scene. Its always a breath of fresh air everytime I come back, cannot wait till next time. for real.

Are we going to see you in Australia anytime soon?
You may see me in Australia sooner than you think! I cant really give out any details at the moment however but keep a look out!

You can grab The Off Season Mixtape featuring the Hilltop Hoods and Mystro track “Do Not” here via iTunes.

P.R – Pre Heated (Free Download)

10 02 2010

After 7 months in the making, the very hard-working Sydney producer P.R has completed the much-anticipated mixtape Pre-Heated hosted by the world-famous New York based DJ/Producer extraordinaire ‘Statik Selektah’.
Pre-Heated is a sample based Hip-Hop project, which brings forth a clash between a range of different genre/styles, fusing Soul and Jazz into production that would make the gods smile. What makes this project so unique is that each track has its own vibe and sound, such as one track gives listeners a gritty raw underground feel, while another track gives the listeners a relaxed soulful feel to just kick and nod their head to.
Pre-Heated boasts 13 solid tracks including the lead single “Better Off” with Sydney’s own 13th Son & Carlos “C-Major” Velasquez, “This The” featuring Staten Islands, NY, JoJo Pellegrino, Jon Conner & Sound Kamp’s The Iron Ghost, as well as appearances from Naledge from Kidz in the Hall (US), Chaundon from the Hall of Justus (US), Mystro (UK), Vice Versah (US), Adelaide’s very own R&B superstar Carla Waye, Melbourne’s Hip-Hop/Soul duo Cee & Bekah And many, many more.
“The title speaks for itself, this project will warm my listeners up and prepare them for my major album”, as quoted by P.R.
This first installment from P.R will give all listeners a taste of what’s to come, making way for the debut album The Chopping Board.

Track List

Curtains Up (Feat. Real Life)
The OZ Connect (Feat. Vice Versah)
Give It To You (Feat. Chaundon, Naledge & Carla Waye)

This The (Feat. JoJo Pellegrino, Jon Conner & T.I.G)

This Ones For You (Feat. Starr Nyce)
Better Off (Feat. 13th Son & C-Major)
All Day Long (Feat. Notion & Tommy Gunnz)
Not Like Me (Feat. Illnigma)

This is what P.R had to say about the track Better Off, featuring 13th Son and C-Major.
“I approached 13th Son through Myspace in late 2008/early 2009 because I felt 13th sons style suited my style of production more than any artist I had met in Sydney. My first approach was to get 13th Son on a track for a new album, which has now turned into my pre-album mixtape, due to a change of plans. After much talk, planning and going through the process of this collaboration, the result was a track that 13th Son wrote called ‘Better Off’. I had an idea to not only attract radios, but giving it a bit of a commercial feel, and that idea came with getting urban artist Israel on it, to sing the hook and bridge. That didn’t work out due to Israel having other commitments, but I met another urban artist through Israel called ‘Carlos Velasquez a.k.a C-Major’, which heard the track and immediately loved it, a week or 2 later, he came up with his parts, recorded them and sent them to me to mix. The result is what you hear on the track”.

You can download the track ‘Better Off’ by following the link here, or head here to grab the full Pre-Heated mixtape. The track Better Off does have a commercial feel, so if that’s not your thing, we suggest checking out a few other tracks on the list like, Aight Den and The OZ Connect feat. Boston emcee Vice Versah. Full covers below.

Cross Bred Mongrels – Certified Wise

25 08 2009

crossbred Mongrels allaussie hip hop

After a long time, Adelaide’s Cross Bred Mongrels are back with a new joint dubbed Certified Wise. Named after the famous crew which has bred some of Australia’s most successful and widely known artists, Certified Wise is the crowning achievement for long time Adelaide hip hop figurehead Flak.

In a distinguished career of building hip hop in Adelaide, Flak was responsible for the early development of such luminaries like the Hilltop Hoods and The Funkoars. And now with long time collaborator and partner-in-rhyme Flee, Flak continues the Certified Wise’ legacy firmly entrenched in the annals of Australian hip hop history.

Produced by DJ Debris, Certified Wise serves up a feast of slamming beats, smothered with the no-nonsense flow Flak and Flee are known for. Featuring guest collaborations with UK MC Mystro (on Killer Combination), Terra Firma’s Simplex (Certified Wise), Funkoars’ Hons (on the rolling-through-Adelaide themed How We Roll) and Melbourne legend Reason (the historical hip hop-leaning Party’s Never Over), Certified Wise is a hard-hitting, no-holds barred assault of classic hip hop infused with elements of jazz, blues, soul, and the right-hook prowess of the Adelaide streets.

Alongside DJ Snair, the Cross Bred Mongrels return to reclaim their rightful throne, inspired and hungry, their title of Australia’s heavyweight kings.
