Ciecmate & Maggot Mouf are Known Associates

29 04 2013

For over a year these 2 contemporaries have locked themselves in the studio once a week to diligently shape and craft a new offering, Ashes To DustCiecmate & Maggot Mouf trade verses back and forth, bar-for-bar in an epic team effort that interlocks prose and sonic aesthetics seamlessly.

KNOWN_ASSOCIATES_-_Cover_Image

The joint delivery puts forth a tag-team approach reminiscent of a classic hip hop style that has not yet permeated Australia’s often individually focused scene. The insane turntable prowess of DJ No Name Nathan (2 x ACT DMC Champion) stitches the release together, officially making Known Associates a triple threat.

The production on Ashes To Dust is rich in melody, hypnotic drums, and deep bass. With a heavily atmospheric and diverse aesthetic, ranging from dark and brooding to bright and positive. The thematic landscape is all encompassing, covering a diverse range of relevant topics with a strong conviction and symbiosis. From party anthem Known Associates, to the thought provoking Beware Of Bio Chips, or the summertime soundtrack Short Shorts, this is no mere journey, it’s an adventure.

Ashes To Dust is a sure shot hit for discerning Hip-Hop aficionados, recent converts, and the occasional rap fan. Ashes To Dust featured guests include: Bias B, Conor Farrell, Gutz, Newsense & Scotty Hinds

“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return”

BTE is setting off 2012 with a 21st birthday bash at Melbourne’s Laundry upstairs! Come down and party like it’s a 21st birthday party with the BTE fam on February 18th. Everyone will be there and hitting the stage over the night so it’s sure to be big!

2012 looks to be a busy one, with the release of Tornts’s next album Concrete Slang. Tornts will undoubtedly bring forth his vivid imagery and stoic refusal to shy away from the brutal truth in another instalment from one of Australia’s most prolific and original styled no-nonsense artists. This will be followed by Maggot Mouf and Sammy Scissor’s new project; Running With Scissors, as well as a new offering from Gargoyle entitled Sink or Swim, both of the later scheduled from mid-year.

After that, who knows? Broken Tooth like to under promise and over deliver, however it can be confirmed that Swarmy and Newsense are both busy on their individual solo albums and Ciecmate is as relentless as always. Stay peeled.

20 01 2012

At BTE, 2011 has been the year of Ciecmate. With all of our artists being quite vigilant on the local show front, Ciecmate has risen above and beyond releasing both his debut full length solo album, Game Over, and a production album, Chess Sounds Vol. 1 highlighting local and international guests over his signature sounds.

Following on from the success of the two albums, Ciecmate toured the full country with the Funkoars in support of their new high energy album, The Quickening. Joining the tour with Ciecmate, and also officially joining the BTE fold was $2 Scratchies star, 2 x ACT DMC Champion, and general lord No Name Nath. Bigfoot & Tornts, Maggot Mouf, Diem and Gutz were all busy on the Melbourne front frequenting support slots on shows and radio appearances.

December also saw the release of a free download, Maggodatron featuring Maggot Mouf and Dekoda as you’ve never seen them before. With a number of releases lined up for 2012 including Tornts, Maggot Mouf, and whispers of a Newsense album, February will see BTE’s 21st official release and a massive 21st birthday party at the Laundry on February 18th. After Hours – Darker Days (Album Review)

21 07 2011

After Hours are back (after a long break) with their third release, an EP titled Darker Days. Available now on iTunes here, Darker Days is a departure from their earlier work – with a nastier, more evil sound. 11 tracks deep, packed with some serious heat – this is a release not to be slept on.

Darker Days features the talents of Pohetikut (Pagen Elypsis) as well as production from Trials (Funkoars), Newsense (Hospice Crew) and Debate (Train of Thought). As members of the illustrious Certified Wise crew DJ Jugular, Edits, Headlock & Integer1 are back with their third release Darker Days, a departure from their previous works. It’s been awhile between drinks, but the guys are back at the bar, so line em up! The lead single and title track from the album, Darker Days serves up come classic headnod shit by way of the After Hours camp. It may have been a few years since we last heard the sweet sounds of  South Australian hip hop from these lads, but it seems time has not wearied them. The track Nightmares, haunts whack emcees in their sleep and features some tight verses from all involved. It’s quite obvious that some serious time and effort went into crafting the rhymes for this album.

“Well it’s razor-sharp, I break your phrase apart like quotation marks
blazing grass, I play the cards I wait till inspiration sparks
make it last learn from my mistakes in the past
no fucking joke it’s cut throat leave your trachea scared”

The track Razor Sharp highlights that fact perfectly. Four and a half minutes of rap fire then a full minute of DJ Juglar scratching it up, rounding out this radio destroying track. A true hip hop fans will savour every moment . Twenty Star Jumps opens up with a murderous Headlock, setting the tone for the rest of the track with a great remix to feature later on in the album. Consume Or Perish takes a nice stab at consumer culture, questioning its effect on society and our daily lives. Falling Down swings along on a drum filled beat overlayed with some serious keys work The track All There Is and a couple of remixes tie out this great album. Overall the guys have gone a little nastier on this one but still use that classic After Hours formula, great samples, killer verses, hypnotizing beats and devastating cuts from the every impressive DJ Jugular. If you grew up loving the sounds of After Hours crew then this album will not disappoint. It’s classic After Hours.

Darker Days now available on CD at Clinic 116 (SA), Cold Krush (SA), Da Klinic (SA), 567King (NSW), Obese Records (VIC) and Taste-Y (FNQ) CD & Digital Album Online here via bandcamp.

Bingethinkers – Where Are They Now… (Feb 11th) (Preview Tracks Up)

24 01 2011

Over the past half-decade, Bingethinkers have built their reputation as one of Sydney’s most dynamic hip hop outfits- electrifying audiences with their remarkable live show. The group is comprised of MC Rinse on the mic, DJ 2Buck (Dialectrix, Gully Platoon) on the decks (and beats) and producers Aeon (a member of Sydney rock/electronica act Decoder Ring) and PSYKEone on the beats. This combination of high energy, boom bap production and razor sharp lyrics create an unmatched collection of individual talent sharing a single ethos.

Following up from the release of their ShelfLife Mixtape (2007), Bingethinkers formed LookUP with fellow Sydneysiders Scott Burns and Thats Them. After various mixtape appearances and an exclusive 12″ vinyl release in 2010, Bingethinkers embark on their long-awaited full length debut, Where Are They Now…

A fusion of classic 90’s hip hop with the futuristic sounds of glitchy electronica, Where Are They Now… is true artistic cohesion, a melting pot of musical influences that includes traditional instruments, soul, electronica, rock, dub, dancehall & funk combined to create a sound like nothing else; the Bingethinkers.

From the lead single The Bust feat. Dialectrix to the soul-tinged Get The Picture, it is clear that Where Are They Now… is more the sound of an established crew cementing their musical legacy rather than that of a fresh collective honing their craft. MC Rinse’s infectious flow is on full display in The Bottle, while the crew’s impeccable production and instrumental prowess gets the heartfelt send off in the closing Stick Around. In News Report, The Binge plays on the panic stricken paranoia and shock value of 24 hour news to the back drop of siren-fuelled production and hard hitting rhymes. They are but a small offering of the infectious personalities and gifted work presented on Where Are They Now…

After establishing their name in the underground for 6 years, Bingethinkers are ready to break the surface.

Adelaide hip hop crew Adroit Effusive are set to release their long awaited debut album – The Album.

‘Australian Hip Hop group to watch out for’ J-Mag, 2009.

The time has finally arrived for the quintessential dysfunctional hip hop family, Adroit Effusive. After toiling in the depths of underground hip hop, honing their skills, paying more than their share of dues, going through as many setbacks as one group could go through and making some of the illest music that nearly didn’t see the light of day, Adroit Effusive are ready. After years of being posed the question, ‘Where is the album?’ The Album is here. Adroit Effusive are set to deliver their opus.

Born out of the Australian hip hop melting pot of Adelaide, Adroit Effusive bring something rare to Australian hip hop in both their composition and their repertoire. The unique 8-man band, who are all capable of standing on their own feet as solo artists, crew-up to create a smorgasbord of production sounds and lyrical concepts to engage and get the head nodding to The Album.

It is an eclectic tapestry of boom-bap beats conducted by Adroit Effusive’s five beat makers, a thorough collection of 19 songs by all seven lyricists and razor-sharp relevant cuts by a master turntablist.

The soundscape on The Album is an amalgamation of layered psych rock, blues, hard rock, funk, Latin acoustic, jazz and classical sounds, all with a hard-hitting hip hop character. Lyrically however, is where Adroit Effusive really stray from the herd. This crew of big characters do not hold back on expressing their diversity on The Album. From the conceptual posse tracks Chump Change and Five Days of Work, to the role-playing lyrical feasts Espionage, War and Suspects, to the storytelling of Crossroads and A Beer and Big Talk, to the B-boy anthems Understood by Few and In the Street, to the retrospective No Aim and Yin Yang, Adroit Effusive come into their own. The songs on The Album are a testament to the depth, breadth and talent of Adroit Effusive.

After previously releasing two vinyl-only EP’s plus side projects by Conseps and Patti, Common Cause and Red Whine Presents…, Adroit Effusive are ready to go. After featuring on countless other albums and sharing stages with numerous international and Australian acts over the better part of a decade, the time has come. Adroit Effusive members Blockade, Conseps, Patti, Bornski, Motion, Devious Dev, Beats and DJ Ad-Fu have created something that justifies their long-time dedication to hip hop music in Australia. A solid nineteen tracks (115 minutes) in length, The Album is a celebration of the struggles of Adroit Effusive and the colourful characters that make up Australia’s most under represented crew. Under represented that is until now, as The Album sees the light of day.

The Album is distributed independently and will be available in independent record stores Australia-wide + iTunes.

The Album is the first single off the upcoming Adroit Effusive album of the same name; The Album, dropping in April 2010 Australia Wide.
Cuts by DJ Ad-Fu. Lyrics by Beats, Conseps, Blockade, Bornski, Motion, Devious Dev and Patti. Produced by Ad-Fu.

Emcee Simplex will drop his long-awaited solo joint on Obese early next year titled Audiobiography. One of this country’s most talented (and under-rated) hip hop talents to grace this country. Simplex’s solo album is slated for a mid-year 2010 release. The album is pretty much a collection of tracks that Simplex has been working on for a few years now, ideas he had wanted to get out from inside his head and inside his computer. Simplex also admits that he is using a bunch of beats that span around eight years of production styles. He is trying to keep the album as varied as possible.

Simplex will spit on pretty much every track on the release, plus a few guest emcees featuring. No word yet on who these guys are, but we’re sure there will be some big name amongst it. Simplex has recently signed a deal with Obese Records, and has reveled that it is a two-album contract. So expect to see a lot from Simplex over the next 12 months. Fans of Terra Firma, have been put on notice that the Simplex album is going to be ‘kinda different’, but shouldn’t stray too far away from the sound they have.

For more info on Simplex head here.
