N’fa Jones: New single ‘Wayooy’ feat. Roots Manuva & M-Phazes

13 12 2011

N’fa Jones frontman of genre bending local hip hop collaboration 1200 Techniques is back on Australian shores with a new EP in hand, Babylondon. You would have seen him already, with recent collaborations on Drapht’s Bali Party, taken from the AIR and ARIA Award winning album Life Of Riley.

As well as with 360 on a deeper album cut Hope You Don’t Mind from the AIR Award winning album Falling & Flying. N’fa’s not just back to Party Party Party, he also brought some almighty tunes home with him and has just dropped his brand new single Wayooy, featuring stellar collaborations with Roots Manuva and M-Phazes, download it for free now at www.nfajones.com. and stream it below. Fittingly named after a Jamaican Rasta term ‘Wayoy’, generally used as a call out for people to gather together in joyous celebration, the track was written and recorded in Roots Manuva’s living room in London and features M-Phazes signature production, providing the perfect summer beats to cruise to.

London City, for which he jokingly refers to as Babylondon after the fallen biblical city of Babylon, in the modern times of London, created the inspiration for N’fa’s new EP. Having spent the past couple of years writing and performing in London’s underground haunts, N’fa performed everywhere from Cargo, Notting Hill Arts Club across to 93FT East, Strawberry Fields Festival and a guest spot on Glastonbury. Smashing rooms and festivals under the guise of his UK project aptly titled ‘No Fixed Abode’ they were awarded ‘Best Live Impact Band’ at the Camden Crawl Emerging Artists Festival.

This is what N’fa had to say about his latest single Wayooy feat. Roots Manuva (prod. by M-Phazes):
N’fa: I had been seeing M-Phazes around the scene at various parties and shows, turns out he had moved in down the road from me in St Kilda. He’d always come and get coffee where I was often working. He hit me up to do a tune for the Oz Home Grown hip hop record that featured myself, Phrase and Illy. I wrote and recorded my parts and the hook real quick M-Phazes put on another beat he’d been working on. Then we thought, lets write a tune just for the hell of it, this became the “Keep Running” song off his Good Gracious record, the first song toward that record actually.
I was getting in his ear saying “bro, why you always just making beats for rappers abroad..? You should make a solo album with instrumentals, and your fav local MC’s, make it about you, and build it up for here. You should also push your creative sounds, like flipping some dub plates. Well, he did, and smashed it. Think he felt like he owed me for pushing him or something, and called me up one time…
He was like “I flipped a dub plate, and you gotta do something with this when ya ready” Well, I found myself at Roots Manuvas flat in London vibing to some beats, he was working on songs for his new record. May I just say, that Rodny Manuva has the worst filing system for his songs. His whole hard drive crashed, we lost loads of tunes we were working on, and he had to start again!! Haha, crazy fella! Well.. We recored ‘Wayooy’ for my project (I kept hold of those files) and Boom.. It sounded heavy… Was a cool session.. Fast too.. M-Phazes was pretty happy with it indeed! I love this one – N’FA

You can catch N’fa touring across the Australian summer playing…

M-Phazes – Good Gracious album review

14 04 2010

M-Phazes has quickly established himself as one of the country’s top producers. After 2 years of nights locked away, computers humming, beats banging and unhealthy dietary intakes (not confirmed), a masterpiece has emerged. Good Gracious is the heavily anticipated debut album from lauded Gold Coast beat-maker M-Phazes.  This 15 track LP features appearances from some of Australia’s most respected hip hop artists including Drapht, Mantra, Dialectrix, Pegz, Delta, Muph and Plutonic, Phrase, Spit Syndicate, Forthwrite, Bliss N Eso, NFA, Illy, 13th Son and Nine High……we could easily stop there.

Good Gracious is concofinay of hip hop styles riding under the one banner that is producer extraordinaire M-Phazes. Good Gracious takes you on a musical tour of the Australian Hip Hop landscape leaving no destination unvisited. Dirty drums, banging bass, electric guitar riffs, layers thicker then 5 day old milk, electro pop and a few beer glasses…it sounds like the remnants of a big night out, but it’s something quite different…

For a debut album M-Phazes has gone far and beyond any expectations. To bring together 15 artists on any one project is a mean feet in itself, but to deliver quality on track after track is something to be applauded. M-Phazes uses the huge variety of artists to his advantage and presents an album packed with personality and style. Good Gracious crushes your preconceptions early and reaffirms M-Phazes hunger for creativity and originality.

..I know this kid whose been digging through the crates for ages, born and raised gold coast of all places, ordinary joe goes by the name of Mark better know to most as M-Phazes….

The opening track For What It’s Worth featuring Horrorshow emcee Solo quickly brings the un-knowledged M-Phazes listener up to speed. This soulful boom-bap styled track quickly builds pace, craftily weaving the habits of a die-hard emcee with the unrelenting drive of a budding producer.
M-Phazes teams up with Mantra, on the appropriately titled track The Freak Show. Mantra is lyrically dangerous and implacably flawless (be sure to check out his debut solo release Power Of The Spoken) but M-Phazes and his DJ lead carnival style drum band is a beat to behold.

..we come from the streets and move on the pavement and you still don’t recognise truth in my statement, this bad blood needs purification slash my wrist and spill it on the music of Phazes….

Blind Man with Obese head honcho Pegz, features a brilliant little sample taken from Traffic’s track of the same name. This raw gritty track holds nothing back, it’s Pegz at his finest. Music Box places Phrase in a Justice inspired, electro pop layered beat. This track brings a unique flavor to an already massively diverse album. As we progress through the CD it becomes more evident that M-Phazes is a man on a musical mission, it’s time to pack away those headphones, play this album loud.

Tracks such as Goodbye Gravity, Triumph, Home, Take It From Me and That’s What We On are stand outs that break from their stereotypical shackles. Every note on Good Gracious has been meticulously arranged, every sample throughly searched for, every detail firmly scrutinized. Quality is the overall theme here and M-Phazes successful hits the nail on the head. While many production albums leave you feeling like it’s a rinse and repeat process, Good Gracious is in no uncertain terms a delectable audio feast.

This album has a little something for everyone, frist class production, first class emcees and first class craftsmanship. Good Gracious is a true snap shot of the Australian Hip Hop scene , taken through the eyes of M-Phazes. We give M-Phazes Good Gracious a plump and healthy 4.7.

Brooklyn Bridge – Bekay feat. Masta Ace (Prod. by M-Phazes)

20 02 2010

Australian producer M-Phazes is set to drop an absolute banger in the form of his production album Good Gracious. It will feature some of Australia’s top emcees including Drapht, Bliss N Eso, Phrase, Illy, Pegz, Muph n Plutonic, Delta, Solo, Spit Syndicate, Dialectrix, Mantra, Nfa, Nine High, Forthwrite (360 n Pez), 13th Son and Haunts. Good Gracious will be out on February 26 through Obese Records (check the previous post we did regarding this release here). If your not already excited, then here’s something to wet your appetite. M-Phazes recently produced a track for US emcee Bekay feat. Masta Ace. The track “Brooklyn Bridge”, which you can stream below or purchase on iTunes, is a prime example of why M-Phazes – Good Gracious will be one of 2010′s most exciting albums.
The Brookylyn Bridge remix is featured on The Hunger Pains Remix EP from Bekay. The remix EP, which dropped Feb. 9 through the Brooklyn-based indie Coalmine Records also features three other remixes that include production and features from DJ Babu, DJ Qvali, Dilated Peoples, Sha Stimuli and Push! Montana.

Matt Diamond, head of Coalmine Records, had this to say regarding the release of The Hunger Pains Remix EP.
“As a label, Coalmine places a strong emphasis on the producer as well as the artist and there’s not a better way to breath new life into a previously existing record than by creating a remix. The idea to release The Hunger Pains Remix EP is inspired largely from the days of when classic albums would be followed up with a 12″ or vinyl EP that would contain otherwise nearly impossible to find remixes. The concept of collecting and ‘digging’ for those hard to find gems is an element of the culture that has shifted from record stores to downloads. Although the experience has changed, the end result is the same…dope music.”

Tracklisting
1. I Am (Remix) feat. Dilated Peoples
2. I Am [Nodfactor.com Remix] (prod. by DJ Qvali)
3. Brooklyn Bridge [Part II] feat. Sha Stimuli & Push! Montana
4. Brooklyn Bridge feat. Masta Ace (M-Phazes Remix)

Torcha & B-Don – Frozen State LP

15 02 2010

A work ethic unmatched, Sydney emcee Torcha teams up with producer B-Don for his third release in less than a year. Following new albums under the Hyjak & Torcha name along with the debut of his rock group A Broken Silence, Torcha & B-Don round out the trifecta with the new LP Frozen State, a hybrid hip hop album influenced by its elements of hard rock, classical, and chart topping tunes.

“Torcha’s new LP Frozen State with musical genius B-Don cements his place at the forefront of Australian hip hop. This is his third full LP release in less than one year and the sound developed has gone from strength to strength” – John Payne, VP, Death Row Records

Collecting the best elements of his previous work, Torcha & B-Don blend the graceful acoustics of piano-led interludes (the opening salvo of “On The Map”) and rock guitars with hard hitting hip hop beats and Torcha’s surefire lyrical flow. From contemporary issues to political, from the laid back to the serious, Frozen State is a slice of the world Torcha has been exploring (from Australia to Europe, from the Americas to Asia), all distilled with his distinct lyrical outlook, giving the album plenty of ground to cover.

With his blues leanings intact (“Internet Age”) and hip hop roots still packing a punch (the Hyjak & Feva guesting on the title track), Frozen State is another defining statement in the Australian Hip Hop landscape. Unafraid to test new ground (“Cross That Line”) while remaining close to home (lining up guest spots from N’FA, 2Furious, and S.Q.Z), Torcha & B-Don have created the next big stepping stone in the genre’s already noted history.

Track listing:

M-Phazes – Good Gracious! New Album (Feb 26)

14 01 2010

M-Phazes is the perfect example of a diamond in the rough.  Born and raised in the Gold Coast of Australia and relatively isolated from Hip-Hop culture, M-Phazes has carved a strong niche for himself that has allowed his production to be heard on a global scale.

Drawing inspiration from legendary producers such as Battlecat, Pete Rock and the late J-Dilla, M-Phazes has has formulated his own sound over the years that can be defined by soulful melodies coupled with loose, smacking drums.

Landing his first U.S. placement in 2005 on Supastition’s “Chain Letters”, M-Phazes has been on a steady climb and hasn’t looked back.  In March of 2008, M-Phazes earned himself a first place victory at Sha Money’s prestigious One Stop Shop Producers Conference Beat Battle, an event that’s held annually in Phoenix, Arizona.  M-Phazes‘ production was judged by a panel of legendary producers and artists that consisted of DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Swizz Beats, DJ Toomp, No I.D, Hi-Tek, Don Cannon, Chamillionaire and of course, Sha Money.  M-Phazes blew me away with his sound” – Jake One.

The last round of the battle was held on Sunday, March 9th, a date which marked the 11th anniversary of the passing of the late Notorious B.I.G. In remembrance of this date, M-Phazes prepared a track titled ‘Brooklyn‘ that was played in honor of the late Biggie. From the first kick to the last snare, this tribute beat caused the entire judging panel and audience to literally leap out of their seats!  This track received a standing ovation that secured M-Phazes victory.  Shortly after, this tribute beat went on to become the backdrop for Joell Ortiz’s forthcoming single off his new album which has since been licensed for the major motion picture Brooklyn’s Finest featuring Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke & Wesley Snipes (directed by Antwon Fuqua, Training Day).

Since the One Stop, M-Phazes has received an Aria Award for his production on Bliss N Eso’s “Flying Colors album, has had his production featured on two college chart topping singles, has signed a landmark deal with Mushroom Publishing and has landed several placements, including a major label placement with Amerie (Feenix Rising Entertainment/Island Def Jam Music Group) as well as a co-production credit alongside super producer JR Rotem (Belugah Heights) for his artist Mann.

To date, M-Phazes has built a very strong discography that includes placements with several key players in today’s hip-hop marketplace that include Pharoahe Monch, CL Smooth, M.O.P., Mela Machinko, Royce Da 5’9″, Emilio Rojas, Heltah Skeltah, Donny Goines, Cory Gunz, Elzhi (Slum Village), Freeway, Marvin Priest (son of Maxi Priest), Termanology, Sean Price, Sadat X and more.

M-Phazes is living proof that no matter where you’re from, you can make an impact on the rest of the world.  As his dreams become a reality, M-Phazes places no boundaries on his craft that he hopes will allow him the opportunity to work with artists that define a wide brush stroke of today’s urban music climate.

M-Phazes will be once again bringing the bangers when he drops his new album titled ‘Good Gracious’ in February this year.

M-Phazes has worked with a whole heap of hip hop artists on this one, including: Drapht, Bliss N Eso, Phrase, Illy, Pegz, Muph n Plutonic, Delta, Solo, Spit Syndicate, Dialectrix, Mantra, Nfa, Nine High, Forthwrite (360 n Pez), 13th Son and Haunts.

This will surely be on of the top albums of 2010, we know it’s early but we have faith! You can check out a sneak preview in the video below.

Heath Ledger directed N’Fa clip released

2 11 2009

Nfa_allaussie hip hop

Aussie Hip Hop Artist N’fa Forster-Jones, best know for his work with 1200 Techniques, and also a boyhood friend of Heath Ledger, has released a music video Heath directed shortly before his death.
N’fa posted the 3 minute, 31 second-clip for his song Cause An Effect on his YouTube and MySpace pages on Thursday, along with a video in which he explains how the project came about.
Ledger, the celebrity-shy star of Batman blockbuster, “The Dark Night,” and the posthumously released “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” shot a handful of videos for low-profile artists he liked. Ledger died aged 28 in New York from an accidental drug overdose in January 2008.
N’Fa, who had been friends with Ledger since they were toddlers in the Australian city of Perth, said the video was shot in one day in the garage of Ledger’s beachside apartment.

“He gave me a call one morning, as he often did at crazy hours, and he’s like, ‘N’fa, I’ve got this idea for a video,’” the rapper says in the online posting.
“He was basically running around directing me each shot,” he said. “It was a really cool day.”
“Every day I count my blessings that I got to have him direct this piece of art,” he said.

The video was first shown at a collection of Ledger’s work at the Rome Film Festival earlier this month.
Check out the clip below.

HYJACK AND TORCHAS – Back after 5 years

10 06 2009

hyjack and Torchas

Five years after the release of their debut album Drastik Measures, Sydney-based duo Hyjak N Torcha make their much anticipated return with Gold Coast producer Mules alongside guest production from the likes of Jase and Jetlag. Across 15 introspective tracks, Unregrettable tackles the demons and issues they’ve battled in nearly half a decade, and with it, they’ve found clarity and musical maturity.

Buoyed by a new found lyrical urgency and a desire to tackle global issues, Hyjak N Torcha set their sights on empirical tyranny What’s Wrong With the World?, life’s simple escapes, Everyday Escape, and personal reflection (the MURS guest-starring single No Regrets). Driven by its polished production, Unregrettable is an unmistakable step forward that embraces hip hop’s love of global genres, yet never once forgetting traditional roots and styles.

Alongside noted names like N’Fa (guest starring in the track Today Was), SQZ, and MURS, Unregrettable is proof that the duo are a pillar in the foundation of a scene reaching new heights. There is a new breed of Australian hip hop making noise, boundless and limitless, but as Hyjak N Torcha prove with Unregrettable, legends never die.
