Interview: Allday – Loners Are Cool

10 04 2013

Still buzzing from scoring a place in the triple j Hottest 100 with the track “So Good” and playing a host of summer festivals including Big Day Out, Allday releases his EP Loners are Cool, a sophisticated take on contemporary hip hop. Allday’s clever observational style and melodic lyrical flows slide over beats from the likes of producer One Above (Hilltop Hoods, Illy) to create Australia’s exciting answer to Drake or Frank Ocean.

aahh: What a big 12 months it’s been for you, moving to Melbourne from Adelaide, appearing in the triple j Hottest 100 and also releasing a couple of mixtapes plus a brand new EP. Has this been the craziest 12 months ever?
Allday: Believe it or not it has been the least crazy 12 months ever, basically everything in the last 12 months has taken a lot of work and not a lot of partying. Looking back at every other year of my life and the various bad decisions I’ve made, this ranks as the tamest.

aahh: I want to ask you about your E.P A Skateboard Soiree. You teamed up with beatmaker C1, how did this relationship develop?
Allday: Actually he contacted me on Facebook and it went from there. He’d seen a video of me rapping into a webcam that was on youtube. We just kicked it, had similar interests and influences and we knocked the E.P out in about 3 weeks. He had just quit his job to focus on music and I’d just moved to Melbourne. Kind of seems like fate.

aahh: Did you expect the response you received for ‘A Skateboard Soiree?
Allday: Not at all, if we expected that to happen we probably would have spent a bit longer on it. At the time we just wanted to chuck something out for fun. I probably had 10 or 20 serious dedicated fans and I was basically doing it for them. Luckily Triple J liked it, some bigger artists like Bam Bam & 360 helped out and posted it and it got bigger than expected.

aahh: So Good, is a track that was really one of your break out tracks, it also appeared in the hottest 100 earlier in the year. What do you think it is about this track that people related to so much?
Allday: I think the theme, although it’s about mental illness kind of, is also kind of universal. Because the theme of the song is really ‘things aren’t perfect but I’m going to make a choice to deal with them and enjoy my life.’ Also it goes ‘mono mono mono’ and gets stuck in your head.

aahh: Moving on to the brand new EP, Loners Are Cool. What did you want to accomplish with this release?
Allday: Firstly I wanted to really make my song writing more direct and meaningful. Songs like Otto and That Phone Is A Brick are fairly polished as far as concepts and wordplay go and I guess I just wanted to test myself and go down that road. When I was writing the E.P I hit a wall where I didn’t know what to write about, I make pop influenced hip hop but I don’t want to say ‘having fun at the beach yada yada yada’, unless I can do it in an intelligent or a new way. I feel like I did that, and I made a better finished product than any of my older stuff. With that in mind though I feel like I can still get a lot better.

aahh: The debut single from the album features Brady James and is titled Girl In The Sun, tell us a bit about the track and clip, we hear you teamed up with a Swedish beatmaker for this one?
Allday: Girl In The Sun is a love song bout the early stages of a relationship. I guess I tried to capture that feeling when you’re just so deep that everything in your life seems like a movie montage. We went for a one take video because we wanted to keep it light and engaging. Woodz made the beat, he made two others on the E.P too. He hit me up about beats from Sweden, god knows how he even came across my music, and I loved his stuff.

aahh: Momo from Diafrix appears on a track titled ‘Single Mother Song’, what did he bring to this track?
Allday: MoMo just has a silky voice and is an amazing musician. I really wanted to get MoMo on the E.P because we became good mates after touring together. I learnt heaps about how to not only be professional but also be a good person from the Diafrix boys, definitely some of the best people I’ve come across in the industry.

aahh: One Above produces the track ‘That Phone Is A Brick’, what was it like working with him? He’s produced some amazing tracks lately.
Allday: One Above is an absolute monster, I bugged him for a bit to get beats even though he was too busy and probably didn’t want to give any to me. He’s actually from right around my area in Adelaide too and we have a lot of mutual friends. It’s crazy to have someone who musically talented in our scene and I definitely lucked out getting him on a beat.

aahh: You are currently on a ten date tour around Australia, tell us about that, is this your first tour of this size?
Allday: It is my first headline tour, I love getting to go different places and meeting fans. It’s definitely the easy part of being a musician. The difficult part is that my DJ Mikey Hundred and I are both legally retarded when it comes to maps and navigation so we end up exploring weird parts of the country. One time we also saw a guy do a hit and run in his car and we tried to chase him down instead of going to sound check.

aahh: You had the Adelaide launch held at the Ed Castle on the weekend, what was that like?
Allday: It was a pretty crazy show, the stage got rushed and a few people were going nuts. It’s always good to come home and hang in Adelaide. It definitely has a different vibe to other cities, but unless you’re from there it’s difficult to see its appeal sometimes.

aahh: Is there an album in the works? Where are you at with it?
Allday: I’m going to drop a free mixtape first then head toward an album. I just want to make sure it’s a really good product when I put it out. So I’ve basically recorded 0 tracks, written 0 tracks and locked down 0 beats. But it’s forming in my mind.

Young & Dumb feat. Bertie Blackman

15 10 2012

Chance Waters is set to burst back onto the Australian music scene with his sophomore record Infinity, due out November 2, 2012 (Permanent Records/Shock). His debut album Inkstains saw him crowned a triple j unearthed featured artist and touring the country regularly, both as a headline act and in support of Australian mainstays such as Bliss N Eso, Illy, Drapht, Pez & 360, and international heavy-weights including Method Man & Redman, DJ Premier and The Beatnuts.

On the back of an enormously successful lead single Maybe Tomorrow which saw high rotation on triple j, an international theme song sync on National Geographic’s ‘Doomsday Preppers’ and a video clip which scored Indie Of The Week on rage, Chance returns with Young & Dumb. Young & Dumb is the second single to be taken from Infinity and features enchanting Australian songstress Bertie Blackman. The song was produced by recent hit machine One Above (Illy, Hilltop Hoods/Sia) and has just been added to playlist on triple j.

On the collaboration with Bertie Blackman: Chance Waters has always been a big fan of Bertie Blackman’s work, and in a strange coincidence, her new single went to radio on exactly the same day as Maybe Tomorrow, the first single lifted from Infinity. With the song concept in mind, Chance needed the right female vocalist to complete the track. He felt Bertie and himself were moving in parallel directions with their production, sound and unusual pop aesthetic. After numerous Skype conversations and emails, a friendship was forged, and the rest is history.

Bertie Blackman and Chance Waters are currently working on an ambitious crowd sourced Young & Dumb video concept. In celebration of the already successful release of Young & Dumb, Chance Waters is happy to announce he will be hitting the road in October and November, kicking things off in dusty Darwin on October 19. Full dates below, with supports to be announced soon! If you’d like to be in the film clip for Young & Dumb, check out all the details here

Chance Waters – Young & Dumb feat. Bertie Blackman

20 09 2012

Chance Waters has come back swinging with Young & Dumb, the under-your-skin-catchy follow up single featuring enchanting Australian songstress, Bertie Blackman, which was exclusively premiered on triple j’s Good Nights with Linda Marigliano tonight.

On the seemingly unlikely collaboration, Chance Waters explained that once he had the song concept in mind, he needed the right female vocalist to complete the track. He felt that Bertie Blackman and he were moving in parallel paths in their production, their sound and unusual pop aesthetic. After numerous Skype conversations and e-mails, a friendship was forged and thus commenced this exciting collaboration.

With production from recent hit machine One Above (Hilltop Hoods – I Love It, Illy – Heard It All) who also takes credit behind the boards for his work on Maybe Tomorrow and featuring horns and strings by members of Unearthed darlings Lime Cordiale & Cogel, the collaboration is seemingly pre-destined to be one of the biggest songs this summer.

Bertie Blackman and Chance Waters are currently working on an ambitious Young & Dumb video concept together.

Young & Dumb will be available to purchase on iTunes tomorrow, Friday September 21.

Illy – Heard It All Review

22 06 2012

Following the success of his sophomore LP The Chase, fans have already begun counting down the days towards the next Illy album. With the drop of Illy’s newest single Heard It All, we all know that it can’t be far off. Heard It All, having been released a fortnight ago, is already in popular demand amongst staunch Illy fans and new comers alike.

Illy uses Heard It All as an opportunity to investigate his inner convictions, while questioning the whole notion of creative originality. The track excels with Illy’s personable delivery and strength of conviction. Illy seems to be a man who has his feet planted firmly on the ground, using the track to acknowledge his fans continued support. Heard It All is perfectly paced lyrically and production wise, where the artistry continues.

South Australia’s One Above (the man behind Hilltop Hoods‘ hit single I Love It feat. Sia) delivers another uplifting backdrop. His concoction of strings will sure to get all watering at the mouth. One Above’s cinematic stylings laid underneath sincere vocals and a hook that all will savor seals the deal for another Illy win. Illy – Heard It All is available digitally now through Obese Records. Illy – Heard It All

23 05 2012

Illy returns in 2012 with his surefire hit of a single Heard It All from upcoming third album Bring It Back. Following the success of career defining sophomore LP The Chase, fans have been anticipating the next Illy release with baited breath.

Heard It All embraces the irony of releasing something original, when everything seems to have been done before. Personable and full of conviction, in this track Illy investigates what he stands for, while aknowledging his fans for their ongoing support.

I was having a really tough time getting inspired to write recently. I wrote this (Heard It All) in response to the feeling that I wasn’t going to be able to deliver what was expected of me. It’s pretty much about accepting the fact that the latest, or newest stuff going on, is all a product of shit that came before, and that that’s not really a bad thing.” - ILLY

With production from One Above (the man behind Hilltop Hoods’ hit single I Love It feat. Sia), the beat is clean and uplifting. The use of strings throughout gives the song a cinematic feel lifting Illy’s sincere vocals on the catchy hook.  After only one week of high rotation on triple j, the track isalready in popular demand. Illy the hit machine has done it again! Illy – Heard It All is available digitally now through Obese Records. Grab it from the link below.

Chance Waters – Maybe Tomorrow

16 05 2012

Following the success of his first single Infinity, (currently sitting at over 20,000 views on YouTube), Chance has had his head down in the studio and this week will release his new track, Maybe Tomorrow from his soon to be released album, Infinity.

Produced by One Above, the new single demonstrates Chance’s lyrical potency and his potential to push the typical boundaries of the hip-hop genre with an up-beat tempo, off-beat rhythm, piano-rock influences and live instrumentation.

Following widespread national acclaim under the appellation Phatchance, Sydney hip hop artist Chance Waters is losing the alias and going ‘au naturale’ with his given name. Chance is facing a ride on a wave of aftershock following his previous success that can only further shake up the Australian hip-hop scene, as we know it.

Chance’s debut album Inkstains saw the artist claim Featured Artist spots on triple j Unearthed and Music NSW as well as topping charts in AMRAP’s Most Ordered To Air Chart. After sparking a rave of support including The Australian Newspaper labeling him as “an intelligent lyricist and masterful storyteller”, Chance is well on his way to becoming a best-selling artist invigorating “a breath of fresh air” (Rave Mag).

Chance is undeniably cementing his place as a “burgeoning hip-hop star” (Dom Alessio, triple j) and carving the path for Australian hip-hop as he goes.

Chance is currently on tour:
Saturday 18th of May – Evelyn Hotel – Melbourne [with Seth Sentry]
Saturday 19th May – FBI Social – Sydney

Chance Waters: To Infinity & Beyond

1 05 2012

Following the release of the title track from his soon to be released sophomore album, Infinity, Sydney hip-hop artist Chance Waters (formerly Phatchance) announces that he will hit the road for a series of East Coast shows this April and May. Infinity is produced by Adelaide artist-to-watchOne Above, who recently produced The Hilltop Hoods’ #1 Single ‘I Love It ft. Sia’ as well as numerous songs from Chance’s debut LP, Inkstains.

Recently you have departed from the Phatchance title to perform under your real name Chance Waters. What was the reasoning behind the name change?
Honestly it was a personal thing, when people asked me what I did and I explained to them I was a musician and told them my stage name was Phatchance I felt like there were all these connotations and assumptions that a name like that carried with it, it’s a really light hearted name, it’s pun based and for a fair while it hasn’t been heaps indicative of the type of music I make. As I’ve gotten older and have matured as an artist I’ve been growing away from a lot of the style elements and influences that I came up with, I felt like by changing to something neutral I’d have a little more freedom in terms of peoples expectations and would also have an opportunity to reintroduce myself somewhat.

You have a new album coming up titled Infinity. Can you give us any brief details on this release?
Definitely! I’m really excited to get it finished and get it out to people, it’s looking like it will be a 12 track album and it should be out sometime in July, there’s a pretty wide range of sounds and I think it’s a little different to anything else that’s going on locally at the moment, at least in terms of production, we’ve approached it from as musical a perspective as possible, there’s a lot of bridges, pre-choruses and instrumental changes, things I think should get more of a run in Australian hip-hop, and I’ve tried to keep my standard of writing as high as possible from start to finish, so I’m feeling really positive about putting it out and seeing how people receive it.

We’ve seen the first track released from the upcoming LP which is also the lead single to the album, titled infinity. Tell us a bit about the track and who you worked with on this one?
‘Infinity’ encapsulates a lot of the ideas I wanted to cover in the album, it’s produced by One Above with a little additional instrumentation from Jon Reichardt (Guitar) and Kieran Owens (Bass), behind the scenes we put a huge amount of time and effort into the production side of things and One Above made a million small changes and additions to the song before we went to mastering. From a production perspective it’s sort of indicative of where I’m trying to go with the record, not bringing the drums in till the very back half of the song and creating as much texture as possible in the instrumental made it a really interesting song to work with, it’s probably not the most radio friendly number we could have chosen as a lead single but I wanted to release a song that was really true to where I wanted to go and Infinity did that perfectly.

You dropped a film clip for the track Infinity, do you feel as comfortable expressing yourself in video form as you do say making a track or writing some lyrics?
Definitely! I love the process of making a video and trying to represent the concepts in a song in a visual medium, I think it’s part and parcel with being a musician now, that you need to be able to do something interesting with both your live performance and your video work, I’m probably not as good as knocking out regular clips as some artists are and I can’t murder the rapping at camera thing like some dudes do, but I love the idea of doing something cool for the key songs on an album. The Infinity clip was probably our biggest production to date, which is funny given how simple the actual video is, but I think visually there were some really nice ideas and the aesthetics of the dancers and the lighting really complemented the concept for me, which is what we were aiming for, so I was heaps happy with how it turned out.

In 2009 we saw the release of your debut LP, Inkstains. How do you think Infinity compares to that release?
I’d like to think it’s a way better record in general. There’s a lot more balance, which was a deliberate thing, I tend to get into this pattern of writing melancholy song after melancholy song, so I tried to pepper the album with a few beat choices that I wouldn’t normally run with, which lead to some interesting results because in a couple of cases there’s quite up-beat production and it’s contrasted with my more macabre writing style, the next single, which is called Maybe Tomorrow, is a perfect example of that. Think jingly piano rock meets cynical arsehole making fun of the end of the world. I also tried to experiment a lot with tempo and song writing and tried to push the boundaries a bit. It’s not totally finished yet but I’m really proud of what we’ve done so far and I think it should resonate with the people who liked my earlier releases as well as hopefully opening up my listening base a bit.

At the end of last year, the I Forget Sorry team released 5 mixtapes each one from one of the artists on the roster. Yours, Approaching Infinity featured a Gotye remix where you teamed up with One Above once again. Tell us a bit about the track and why you picked the Gotye track to remix?
That song has probably been one of the best received tracks I’ve ever worked on, One Above murdered the remixing side of things and it was a really cool concept to write to. Gotye’s one of my favourite artists and I’ve been a little obsessed with his music for years, so the second I saw the video I knew I wanted to do it, I never expected him to be kind enough to send us the stems though. Obviously the success of the track was mainly about piggy-backing what was always going to be a massive hit, but we were lucky in that we got in early and I think we did something a bit different to all the other remixes that were floating around, so people picked it up and ran with it. I still get Google Alerts about that track getting played on radio in Europe and it definitely introduced a lot of new people to my music, which is really surreal, I’d love to do more official remix work in the future but right now I’m primarily focused on finishing the album and getting some new originals out.

You are also off on a tour around the country, are you looking forward to the dates, and what can heads expect at your live show?
Yes! I’m heaps excited about the tour dates! I just merged Melbourne shows with Seth Sentry, and he’s one of my favourite rappers full-stop, and I was also lucky enough to score main support for TZU in Adelaide which I’m kind of pegging onto the tour, so there’s a lot for me to look forward to. In terms of my live show it depends on the date, in Adelaide I’m doing a more standard set with just myself and One Above, which will be heaps of fun as I’ve never shared a stage with him, but for most of the tour I have a bassist and keyboard/banjo player and for Sydney and Melbourne I’ve also got a violinist/singer joining me. I’ll be playing a mix of older tracks from Inkstains and Inkstains (Acoustic) as well as some songs off the mixtape and a few untested tracks from the new album, I’m particularly excited about wheeling those out for the first time and seeing what works and what doesn’t.
