One Sixth – Electronic Mail (Out Now)

24 08 2012

One Sixth has been hip hop’s best kept secret for too long. Today, the brilliant young lyricist has released his highly anticipated debut album Electronic Mail through local indie label Pang Productions together with Obese DistributionAfter winning the prestigious Hilltop Hoods Initiative in 2010, buzz surrounding One Sixth’s first LP has been building rapidly.

Bolstered by his memorable on-stage presence, and frequent stand-out guest verses, One Sixth’s name is constantly dropped by the local hip hop elite (usually in the context of “most promising” or “favourite” Australian rapper).

Notoriously personable and comical, One-Sixth has connections among all facets of the scene, and a strong and supportive following as a result. Electronic Mail is a concept album themed around the poignant and increasing apparentness of digital communication. Together with the Nokia 3310 inspired album artwork, song titles such as ‘SMS‘, ‘LOL‘ and title track Electronic Mail, surmise the digital experience.

Working alongside some of the most exciting modern producers in the Australian game, including Dyl Thomas (Polo Club), Must Volkoff (Mata & Must, Pang Productions), Tony Wolf & the late Charles Parker, and Geko (GOATMOB, Crate Cartel).

The use of evocative samples throughout the album assist to colour the tracks with clever pop-culture cues while lyrically One Sixth shines. Instantly impressive for his stylistic dexterity and use of language, the underlying messages woven masterfully through the album allow stories to unravel more after each listen. With his dulcet tones draped over illustrative metaphor and double entendre, One Sixth bares his soul with the upmost conviction.

Guest vocalists include Mantra, Maundz, Lotus, The Tongue, Candice Monique, Class A, Dyl Thomas, Fluent Form and Raven. Lead single Round The Sun, produced by long-time comrades Charles Parker and Tony Wolf, encompasses a m lange of vintage vocal samples, driving bass lines and melancholy woodwind loops. The track is especially sacred to One Sixth representing one of the last opportunities to work with Charles Parker, who tragically passed away in 2011. ‘SMS (Six Million Stories)‘ is produced by the ingenious Must Volkoff, who produced, recorded and mixed the bulk of the album.

“I hope anyone who listens to the album can see how much respect I have for music, and for my craft. There are many dimensions to who I am as a person; I try to incorporate that idea into my music, because I think a lot of people can relate to that self perception.” – One Sixth

A sample heavy track, the full base line plods alongside strings nuances. Lyrically the track empathetically examines a series of unhappy stories; the concept derived from One Sixth’s interest in foreign films, and the SBS slogan ‘six billion stories‘. Track five on the album is the mesmerising ‘Around You‘, a highlight production from Dyl Thomas. Melancholy strings, heartbeat bass lines, and boom-bap kits set the cinematic backdrop for the track. The sensitivity of the femme fatale style sample juxtaposed with the assurance of One Sixth’s flow is a moving combination. With multiple interpretations, One Sixth is somewhat of an alluring enigma.

Brimming with heartfelt professions, Electronic Mail is a magnum opus, a work of art, crafted by a true connoisseur of his genre.

Ishu presents an amazing debut album: A World In Progress

21 11 2010

Back in 2008, Ishu garnered praise for the smooth, organic dub/reggae/dancehall flavours and laid-back vocals of his debut EP. Seven tracks which documented his time in Melbourne before heading abroad. Fast-forward two years later and he’s switching it up. A broadened sound palette has him charting new musical territory, using hiphop and electronic beats as his canvas. Culture-mashing boom-bap in a similar vein to local favourites Hermitude and with hints of big influences like Madlib, Hi-Tek and Bonobo, Ishu is now ready to unleash his debut album, A World In Progress.

Citing his environment as the main influence of his music, after traveling throughout Europe and Asia in 2008-09, it’s no surprise that Sydney-born hip-hop producer Ishu has returned to Australia with a bag full of fresh ideas and a new vision. Collecting samples and field recordings along the way; Ishu found inspiration in every country he visited, immersing himself in local culture and sketching beats for his forthcoming album release. Back in Melbourne, in his home studio, the finishing touches were made to bring the rough recordings to life.

This two year process produced the concept album, A World In Progress. A contemporary mix of world music soundscapes, down tempo electronic beats and heavy hip hop blends, it is an aural and sensory delight, that takes the listener on a journey. Scheduled for release in November 2010, this is an album that will appeal to hip hop and world music fans alike.

Ishu has enlisted some of Australia’s finest vocalists for the album, including Mantra, Hau, Lotek, Class-A, Elf Tranzporter, Dyl Thomas (Polo Club), Rachael Berry and Pataphysics. A World In Progress intro’s with atmospheric sounds recorded both locally in Australia and in Japan, the first and last stops on his musical journey. It’s here that Ishu sets the scene for this sonic journey; A World in Progress quoted in many languages, which are recordings of friends along the way, it is backed by a deep and heavy hip hop rhythm.

Each song on the album represents a different country visited…from the peaceful English countryside in summer contrasted with London’s coldest winter in 17 years, to India during the terrorist attacks of 2008, and the hectic city lifestyle of Hong Kong. With a portable recorder always within reach, Ishu captures the essence of places like Le Gare du Nord in Paris, the familiar Melbourne-esque trams in Basel Switzerland and the Islamic prayer calls in Istanbul Turkey.

In Prague Ishu recorded the giant metronome which stands in place of the former Soviet leader Stalin’s monument. “An interesting sight, producing an interesting sound…kind of ‘the beat of the people’, ironically very slow and mechanical”. It was this awareness of land and people that married Ishu to his tunes. Following the roots of his Lithuanian father he felt a natural connection there, meeting local MC Messiah, they together created a track with Lithuanian lyrics, that connects all races with a universal question, ‘So What Do You Really Want?’

A World in Progress, is the name, the motif, the question and the driving force behind this album. A release that can be classed as Hip-Hop, but do not be fooled in thinking this is where the musical genius stops. World music soundscapes and down tempo electronic beats make this album both fresh and original. The production is of an extremely high caliber and this only being Ishu’s second release, is proof of the talent of this young Australian producer.

Following in the footsteps of producers like Mad Professor, DJ Shadow and DJ Krush; Ishu has prepared a modern day live production of the new tunes using a computer and various other electronic contraptions. Blending each song into the next, Ishu gets hands on with the music, having full access to all elements of each song and endless effects possibilities. Always keeping things live and spontaneous, ensuring that every show is different from the last.

Made In Melburn – Friday April 23

14 04 2010

Witness one of the biggest collections of Melbourne hip hop talent as the Made In Melburn mini festival invades Billboard Nightclub. With live performances from Diafrix, Illy, Polo Club, the Psyde Projects and the Fresh Sox Breakers as well as DJ Flagrant (AV set), Cargo, Kuya, Sheriff Rossco, Ms Butt and more to be announced. Plus Melbourne’s best beat makers in the Producers Lounge including M-Phazes, Jase, Bonez, Doc Felix, Peril, Matik and more.
Dont miss this showcase of local talent as we celebrate the artists who represent Melbourne to the fullest.

DIAFRIX
Having formed in 2001 and already regarded as one of the most energetic live acts around, last year Diafrix’s debut longplayer Concrete Jungle was released to critical acclaim, with front men Momo and Azmarino and producer Ptero Stylus fusing soul, dancehall, African rhythms, funk, Australian hip-hop, rock and reggae to create a totally unique, but entirely harmonious sound.
Already renowned for their live performances, their show has been polished via a European tour in early 2009 where they played to full houses in intimate venues in cities such as Paris, London and Amsterdam, and more recently major local fesitcals like Big Day Out, Meredith, Good Vibrations, Falls Festival, Hot BBQ, and Kiss My Grass to name but a few, guaranteeing they will tear the roof of Billboard at the first Made In Melburn event on April 23rd…

ILLY
Having emerged from the underground MC battle-scene, Illy quickly caught the eye of the Crooked Eye crew, putting the young MC on a fast track to success due to the mentoring of crew mates Phrase and Daniel Merriweather, which in turn lead to a deal with hip hop heavyweights Obese Records. Illy’s debut release on Obese ‘Long Story Short’ saw the MC lauded as one of 2009’s most exciting hip hop prospects, with production from fellow Crooked Eye member M-Phazes as well as Jackson Jackson’s J-Skub. The result was some of the best produced hip-hop beats in the country, with lyrics that even when simple in delivery, maintained a complexity of message.
Since releasing his debut album, Illy has played countless gigs across the country, gained an entry in Triple J’s Top 100 for 2009 (Pictures at #66), started work on his follow up album, and is now undertaking another tour, Pictures 2010 which includes his final Melbourne show, Made In Melburn at Billboard on April 23rd.

POLO CLUB
After bursting into the public consciousness through the MTV Kickstart and Triple-J Unearthed Competitions, Urban Monk and Camelot The Cameleon wowed fans with their genre smashing debut album, The 13 last year. With idiosyncratic beat arrangement, deft lyricism and world-class bounce, Polo Club’s cross-over take on urban music and tight live shows have already made them fan favourites less than 2 years after coming onto the scene.

PSYDE PROJECTS
D-Fro, ILLResponce and Mr Moonshine are The Psyde Projects – a group that has an affinity with vinyl and the MPC and who love the flavour of the old skool. With all three members adept at beatmaking and drawing on different influences, they colour their music with syles and genres off a multitude of records, and make music littered with samples from diggers records topped with unpretentious lyrics.
Having gained a loyal following through live shows around town over the past two years, The Psyde Projects are set to blow up in 2010 with a number of projects on the go including a remix EP (out on Juno in March), a 45 and their debut album all set to drop before the year is out.
Witness The Psyde Projects tear the roof off with their catchy hook lines and full flavoured loops as MCs D’fro and ILLResponce deliver a lyrical onslaught on stage while Moonshine provides seamless blends and cuts to match.

FRESH SOX

This Melbourne based b-boy crew was formed in 2002 when Melbourne identities Mousa and Lamaroc joined forces to establish what is now considered one of the greatest Australian crews of all time, Fresh Sox. Combining power and footwork, the crew has grown over the years to now include both interstate and overseas members, guaranteeing a steady evolution in style which has seen them crowned Australian B-Boy champions 4 times, and invited to affiliate themselves with the Mighty Zulu Kingz 1973

Early bird tickets only $20 available from Billboard online, Moshtix, Ticketek, Wax Museum, This Is It and the usual outlets
