Mantra – Speaking Volumes Tour Comp

3 11 2011

Mantra is fast becoming one of Australia’s most eminent hip hop artists. After setting a new bench mark with first solo effort Power Of The Spoken, the Melbourne emcee is back with an explosive new release entitled Speaking Volumes. Combining both musical proficiency and articulate character, Mantra has delivered a seamless, holistic album.

Speaking Volumes exhibits the intricate philosophizing idiosyncrasy of Mantra’s rhymes. His vehement lyricism with its tapestry of subject matters is vividly transposed by its musical accompaniment for the album’s entirety. Publicly, yet astutely labelled ‘your favourite rapper’s favourite rapper’, it was no surprise that an inundation of accomplished names stepped forward to contribute. Speaking Volumes features an impressive array of guest artists such as Promoe (Looptroop Rockers, Sweden), Drapht, Urthboy, Illy and many more.

Production-wise, the album boasts a stylistically diverse selection of sounds; each producer bringing his own realm of sonic brilliance to the fore. Speaking Volumes credits beats from the likes of M-Phazes, El Gusto and Mista Savona among others. To celebrate the release of what is sure to be one of the Australian Hip-Hop releases of the year, Mantra is hitting the road with a brand new live show. Widely regarded as one of the best live performers in the country, he will be performing tracks off the new album, as well as some old favourites.

Joining the line up in selected cities will be Hip-Hop mastermind Tommy Illfigga, who recently dropped his full-length album Walk A Mile. Tommy is one of Australia’s most exciting exponents of Hip-Hop culture; not only a prolific MC and producer, but also a world-renowned beat-boxer. Also joining Mantra is In Good Company featuring Syntax, Whisper and Breach.  The IGC guys have just dropped their debut self titled LP and are a live performance not to be missed. Mantra – Speaking Volumes

24 08 2011

Mantra is fast becoming one of Australia’s most eminent hip hop artists. After setting a new bench mark with first solo effort Power Of The Spoken, the Melbourne emcee is back with the explosive new release Speaking Volumes. Combining both musical proficiency and articulate character, Mantra has delivered a seamless, holistic album.

Speaking Volumes exhibits the intricate philosophizing idiosyncrasy of Mantra’s rhymes. “This is the first time I’ve recorded an album I was so in control of. I knew how I wanted it to sound and worked together with the producers and guest artists to make it happen.” - Mantra

First single release (as heard on Triple J) Got Me Wrong feat. Parvyn Kaur Singh offers a brazen glimpse behind the misconceptions and snap judgements public figures are often prescribed by the public. Boasting production by the masterful Mista Savona and the enchanting flourishes of Hindi-style vocalist Parvyn Kaur Singh, Got Me Wrong is characterized by its exotic melodies and bass-heavy, driving beats. Produced by Vegas with additional production highlights from Hattori Hunzo, the ever the riddling jester, Mantra continues to deliver impressive skill served with a side of moral confrontation in Nobody Knows I’m Famous. A witty, fundamentally self-deprecating track, making mockery of a seemingly shallow music scene. Perfect Thing, with its selfless and generous insight to love’s mystique, by rap standards may in fact be the most risqué track on the album. The song possesses a sensual fullness featuring Mantra’s enamored croon on the hook.

Speaking Volumes is a true testament to both Mantra’s observance of social psychology, and his deep reverence and aptitude for language. With his careful approach in addressing poignant themes, this album is certain to live up to its namesake.

It’s a far more musical album, an album of songs, as opposed to “rap” songs. I also collaborated with a lot more guest vocalists, and worked more closely with the producers to get the sound I was after.’ – Mantra

Urthboy – The Sneakquel Tour (Adelaide Leg Review)

13 05 2010

Elefant Traks giant Urthboy, Jane Tyrell and Elgusto (Hermitude) hit Adelaide last weekend, bringing an in your face, energetic live show that had the punters out of control.  Joining Urthboy on The Sneakquel Tour this time round is Melbourne emcee and lyrical magician Mantra. Local lads Mase and Mattic kicked the night off, warming up the crowd early on. It was then on to Koolta who performed tracks of the recently released Deportation EP, both groups were well received by the eager crowd. You could tell that the atmosphere was hyped, a real sense of excitement hung in the air. Locals were anticipating Mantra’s first official appearance in Adelaide and needless to say the ever impressive Urthboy show.

Next up was Mantra, with DJ Wasabi joining him on the ones and twos. Soon Wasabi had the familiar intro to Mantra’s Power Of The Spoken blasting through the speakers. Mantra backed up Power Of The Spoken with the boom bap styled track Perfect Little Island. Mantra soon had the crowd chanting back to his every command before knocking it back a gear with the chilled out Live It Out. Mantra went on to flex his skills on some ‘battle rap shit’ then threw in some nice freestyles for good measure. Other highlights from the set included the track I Wanna Go Home, Flightpath (could have been more prepared for this) and of course the massive tracks I Hereby Stand plus the M-Phazes hit, The Freak Show.

We were quickly wondering how Urthboy could possible top that, little did we know what was in-store. Urthboy burst on to the stage, after a short drinks break, with explosive power. The electronic opener Spitshine soon had Urthboy, Jane and Elgusto kicking into a 3 way b-boy dance that was a good look. It was pretty much hit after hit from that point on. Nuthin’ I’d Rather Do, ShrugginJane and her amazing voice, Hellsong, Ready To Go, Jane and her amazing voice (did we mention that) and Served. The whole time Urthboy was pumping around the stage like a man truly feeling the music, the crowd responding with just as much enthusiasm. We have it on good authority that Urthboy’s energetic live stage show is causing permanent damage to his already injured body, we hope he doesn’t slow it down too much though.

The dynamic that Urthboy, Jane and Elgusto share on stage is something truly special to find, not only in hip hop music but any musical genre. Urthboy has unquestionably cemented his spot amongst the cream of the crop within the Australian music scene, two AMA nominations back that up. The show continued with Elgusto taking the spotlight with a great performance on the beat pad, remixing an old pop favourite. The sirens then sounded as The Gov started shaking to its foundations with the huge bass line of the classic track The Signal. The guys closed out what was a massively enjoyable night with the popular, We Get Around and Over Before It Began, leaving the crowd in awe of Urthboy and the Elefant Traks massive.

Make sure you catch Urthboy and the whole crew including Mantra on The Sneakquel Tour, coming to a town near you. These are the remaining tour dates:

Mantra’s Power Of The Spoken Triple J’s feature album

12 04 2010

Mantra’s debut album, Power of the Spoken, is driven by the importance of the verbalized thought; a way to paint ideas, thoughts, and opinions in its most effective form. In the opening title track, he breaks down the very word “mantra” as a concept- chanted and recited through history as “phonetic outreach” and distilled here as an introduction to his own; “spoken word as a weapon.”

Power of the Spoken
is an electric hip hop album that isn’t afraid to embrace worldly elements. From the mystical Eastern influences of the title track to the multi-lingual and piano-based Fall Guy, the album features production by Mista Savona, Count Bounce and M-Phazes. The latter of whom produced the album’s first single, I Hereby Stand, a stand-out track powered by hard-hitting percussion and razor sharp flow. The track is the album’s right hook, the telling of Mantra’s credentials up to now- the blood and sweat spent on years of playing shows and the tireless work of becoming one of the finest emcees in the country.

In Mad With It, Mantra (with guest Jeremedy) takes an ironic jab at a world gone crazy, while in the aforementioned Fall Guy, he takes a somber look at personal vulnerability; someone wracked with anxiety and depression, finding a way to cope through lyrical catharsis. Perfect Little Island is a fine example of Mantra’s unique ability to display his vision of the world, backed by brooding bass-heavy beats skittered with tinges of more electronic diversions; a dynamic combination of gritty musical textures and urgent thought.

Like Perfect Little Island, the album isn’t about broadcasting a message, but rather exploring the word and the language as the most effective tool for discourse translated by hip hop. Power of the Spoken represents diversity in style linked thematically by a strong belief in what it proclaims. His talent is undeniable and this, the Mantra takeover, resonates with the unquestionable power of the spoken word.

Power Of The Spoken by Mantra is Triple J’s feature album all this week.
