New Music: Mr Hill & Rahjconkas – ‘Dead End Street’ feat. Muph

31 03 2013

After a highly productive debut year in 2012, March 2013 sees the 2nd single release for one of local hip hop’s hardest working up and coming duo’s Mr Hill & Rahjconkas. In the space of one year they have firmly made a place for themselves in the industry and gained respect and accolades from genre veterans.

Dead End Street feat. Muph

2013 is shaping up to be no different. Since the release of their first single in October 2012 Put The Work In, popularity for this young duo has gained increasingly. Being chosen by triple j unearthed to play at Brisbane’s hiphop festival Sprung, saw the boys perform on a major platform with overwhelming support.

These “Next Crop” artists are back with their latest single and title track to the new release. Dead End Street. An energetic brass section with catchy vocal samples line a once again powerful chorus delivered by Rahjconkas. Again showing their solidarity with veteran artists, Australian hip hop legend Muph (Muph & Plutonic) has thrown a guest verse down for this single. Speaking about where he has come from as an artist to where he is now.

With Mr Hill being based in Brisbane QLD, and Rahjconkas in Wagga Wagga NSW, collaborating is always difficult. But with several short trips to each other’s homes this album has again come together quite easily in the space of 10 months. Proving to the critics their constant drive and work ethic. Set to release May 17th around the country, this is the second taste of what this new and highly anticipated album will sound like. High energy, charismatic, yet at times deep and thought provoking.

Mr Hill is currently on tour until April with his best friend Seven as they travel the country supporting Australian icon Drapht on his uni-verse tour. They are again planning on hitting the road in June on their own headline tour to all major capital cities following the release of Dead End Street.

Smiles Again – How ‘Bout You Stop Being So Funny & Say Something Serious

10 12 2012

After two mixtapes and two critically acclaimed albums with Mind Over Matter the debut solo offering from Smiles Again has landed in the form of his new EP How About You Stop Being So Funny & Say Something Serious.

smiles again stop being so funny

One half of Sydney based hip hop duo Mind Over Matter, Smiles, 23, has played shows alongside Willow for the past 5 years. Together the boys have sold out shows nationally and toured extensively as both a headline and major support for artists such as Bliss n Eso, Method Man & Redman, Drapht just to name a few. Solo, Smiles expresses a very different side of himself lyrically. The Serious EP is the sister to its 2011 predecessor How Bout You Stop Being So Serious & Say Something Funny - a 9 track effort which showcased Smiles Again’s more comedic and imaginative side.

How Bout You Stop Being So Funny & Say Something Serious definitely lives up to its name. Smiles touches on personally revealing topics ranging from his year out of high school, his experiences working in a youth refuge, to witnessing his best friend lose himself to drugs to finally having his own problems dwarfed by a close friends brain tumour diagnosis. The release is an emotional journey featuring some of the countries most promising artists including repeat collaborator Jon Reichardt, William Singe and Johnny Utah. Musically the EP features contributions from Rahjconkas, Konfuzion and more.

Obesecity 2

6 08 2012

10 years ago, at a time when Australian hip hop was still struggling to be heard, Obese Records released Obesecity. Invited from all corners of the country, emcees and producers hungry to showcase their skills contributed tracks, unbeknownst of the powerful ripple effect it would create.

Bolstered by the humble independent label, the compilation birthed a generation of hip hop heavyweights, recognised today as the true pioneers of a flourishing industry. Hilltop Hoods, Muph & Plutonic, Bias B, Pegz, the late Hunter and more united to give the growing genre a voice.

To celebrate its anniversary Obese Records is extremely proud to present Obesecity 2. A dual-disc compilation showcasing the brightest and most promising new artists in Australian hip hop, handpicked alongside the genre’s most revered underground acts. With emphasis on the label’s distribution roster and independently established acts, Obesecity 2 will benchmark the scene once more.

The range of artists featured on the compilation varies both stylistically and geographically. With moments of progressive, electronic production, next to the more traditional sounds of BBQ rap boom bap. Obesecity 2 exhibits the extensive sonic landscape now occupied by the genre.

The diversity noted in the subject matter is reflective of age, circumstance and inclination, laid forth by the nation’s most unconventionally outspoken social conscience. Obesecity 2 is not only an ode to its genre-defining predecessor, but a time capsule, which will undoubtedly be prized for its conviction in this age of mass production and impersonal media.

Obesecity 2 – Track List Revealed

25 07 2012

The range of artists featured on the compilation varies both stylistically and geographically. With moments of progressive, electronic production, next to the more traditional sounds of BBQ rap boom bap. Obesecity 2 exhibits the extensive sonic landscape now occupied by the genre.

Obesecity was released 10 years ago when the Aussie hip hop genre was very unpolished and misunderstood. Crews from across Australia had been linking up for shows and various other reasons, but the scene was relatively insular and invisible to mainstream society. What Obesecity and Culture of Kings managed to create, was a unity and strength, which in its exceptional nature forced people to sit up and take notice. Since that point, Australian hip hop hasn’t really looked back. We are now a thriving industry, and part of what defines modern Australia. Obesecity 2, in essence, is about reflecting on all of it, and realising how far we’ve come.” – Pegz

Seven – Floated EP

1 02 2012

Buoyed with the success of single Good Thing, Seven continues his run into 2012 with the release of his second EP, Floated. Floated is a step-up for the Gold Coast emcee, distanced from the fickle politics of the scene, Seven has continued his trademark upbeat and honest take on the genre.

The EP covers successes, failures, long nights and unhealthy addictions to game consoles over a mixed bag of talented producers. Seven and M-Phazes again team up on synth-heavy My Way with the assistance of Yale vocalist, Stefan Emslie. Brisbane label-mate Cam Bluff (Vegas Aces) also contributes along with Mdusu, J-Squared and Rahjconkas.

The second single to be released from Floated is Get UP, a large synth banger, somewhat estranged from Seven’s usual style. However, Seven and J-Squared complement each other perfectly on the track assisted by Brisbane songstress Claire Walters. The tune tells of Seven’s largest epiphany circa 2009 which broke him from the action less surf/ps3/drink rut in which he was planted. The film clip, shot by Sydney’s Kacie Anning is below.

Seven hits the road on main support duties for 360 throughout February and March and will headline his own tour in May. Download link for the Seven – Floated EP will be available right here Feb 2nd, 12noon.

Tracklisting
1. Floated
2. Good Thing ft. Mr Hill
3. Path of the Sun
4. Get Up
5. My Way ft. Stefan Emslie
6. Get Up
7. Her Song (Rahjconkas Remix)
