Runforyourlife wins 2012 Hilltop Hoods Initiative

Emerging Hip Hop group Runforyourlife has been announced as the winner of the Hilltop Hoods Initiative for 2012. With the support of the Hilltop Hoods and the Australian Performing Right Association (APRA|AMCOS), Runforyourlife has won a kick-start to their career, with $10,000 going towards the release and promotion of their first solo album.

MC Suffa of Hilltop Hoods said, “Thanks to APRA and our judging team Hau, Raph, Nish and Ran-Dee, they do a great job every year. Congratulations to the Hip Hop/Soul collective Runforyourlife, they make some great music and are very deserving recipients.”
As part of the prize package, Runforyourlife will also receive valuable legal advice courtesy of David Vodicka and Media Arts lawyers and also receive a Shure Microphone prize pack.

Emerging artists deserve every opportunity to make their mark and develop their career,” APRA|AMCOS Director of Membership Milly Petriella said. “We are proud to partner with the Hilltop Hoods to offer Australian Hip Hop artists the chance to win this wonderful initiative.”

Runforyourlife is a two-year-old musical collective of electronic hip hop soul proportions that showcases an evolving roster of some of Australia’s finest underground soul singers & MC’s.  At the foundation of Runforyourlife are two forward thinking beat-maker/Producers J-Smith & The Dutch. Drawing influence from J Dilla, Flying Lotus to the smell of burning vinyl, their style matched with undeniable arrangements, hooks & melodies will convince any listener that there is something worth listening here with the potential to shake up the standard pop formula. At the vocal helm their feature artist family include Syreneyiscreamy, NFA, Remi, Nadee, Nai Palm, Cazeaux OSLO, Zulu Flow, 1/6, Jamima Jonez plus many more in a live show with a full band that is pure fire and soul.

MC/Producer Koolta Wins The 2011 Hilltop Hoods Initiative

Emerging South Australian Hip Hop artist Koolta has been announced as the winner of the 2011 Hilltop Hoods Initiative. Kultar Ahluwalia, aka Koolta, is a 22yo South Australian MC/Producer. With an all-round skill set, Koolta employs a DIY mentality, handling all his own production, writing, recording and mixing.

Making music since the age of 15, Koolta has shared the stage with such artists as Urthboy, Drapht, Funkoars, Foreign Beggars and C Rayz Walz.

 Koolta receives $10,000 from Hilltop Hoods and APRA to release and promote his debut LP. He also receives a prize pack valued at $1000 from DC clothing and legal advice from David Vodika of Media Arts Lawyers.

The Hilltop Hoods Initiative – 10 grand for you?

The Hilltop Hoods Initiative will give one emerging Australian hip hop artist a career starting opportunity to the beat of $10,000. The grant is aimed to fund costs associated with manufacturing and releasing a CD of at least five original songs. Proudly brought to you by Aussie hip hop giants The Hilltop Hoods and APRA, it is open to an emerging Australian hip hop artist who has not released an album professionally/ commercially.

Handpicked by The Hilltop lads, the judging panel features Aussie hip hop’s most influential figures:
* Hau (ACT) – Artist (Koolism), JJJ Presenter (The Hip Hop Show)
* Nish (SA) – Grafitti Artist, Community Worker
* Ran-Dee (NSW) – Manager (Def Wish Cast), Radio Presenter (Alchemy Radio)
* Raph (VIC) – Artist, Clothing Label Owner (Blank Clothing), Author (Behind The Beat)
Applications are open December 10, 2009 and will be closing 22 February 2010. The worthy recipient will be announced 31 March 2010.

Who can apply?
To be eligible for the HTH initiative you must be:
- Emerging Australian based Hip Hop artists or groups who have not released an album professionally/commercially.
- Applicants of any age (but it is expected that you will be in the early stages of your career).
- Applicants must be Australian citizens or must have been legal residents of Australia for the past two (consecutive) years.
- Previous recipients of the HTH Initiative are not able to apply.
- Applicant must be an APRA member or have at least made application to join APRA. For more information on joining APRA go to http://www.apra-amcos.com.au
- APRA employees (and their immediate families) are ineligible to enter.

What is the grant for?
The grant is for costs associated with manufacturing, marketing and distributing a CD of at least five original songs. This can include:
- Mastering
- CD artwork/design
- Marketing and promotional materials
- Postal and administrative costs associated directly with the project
- Manufacturing
Please note, the grant does not cover:
- Recording costs
- Merchandising
- Equipment purchases
