Drapht – ARIA Performance

16 12 2011

Drapht is still currently on cloud nine from a couple of weeks ago after taking home the ARIA for Best Urban Album.  It was his first year in attendance at the ARIAs and was lucky enough to have been asked to open the ceremony with a performance of Rapunzel which you can watch below.

Drapht is currently enjoying a couple of weeks at home in Perth, but is excited about what’s to come with his summer Festival appearances kicking off again on the 30th December in Rockhampton for the Oxford St Party and finishing up in his home town for the Perth Big Day Out on 5th February. These shows will be his last for a while, as he will be taking sometime out in 2012 to concentrate on a new album. Finally though, Triple J are inviting you to take part in the world’s biggest musical democracy – the 2011 Hottest 100! Drapth to headline Come Together 2011 feat. Mantra, The Tongue, Muph & Pluto, Urthboy, Illy & M-Phazes

4 05 2011

After seven years of providing a distinctly domestic soundtrack to June long weekend, Come Together keeps its focus on showcasing the best of homegrown talent with an exciting new twist for its eighth incarnation. Come Together returns in 2011, for one day only on Saturday June 11th. We’ve revamped, refreshed, recharged, renovated and are ready to roll out the musical movers and shakers with an all Australian hip hop line-up set to have the Big Top jumping.

Lining up front and center & fresh from nailing down the highest ranked hip hop single at number 12 on the Triple J Hottest 100, is hip-hop artist on the rise Drapht. Hailing from Perth, Drapht emerged onto the scene alongside fellow WA heavy hitters Downsyde and Fdel and has since established himself as an MC on the up having polished his on-stage antics alongside the likes of the Hilltop Hoods, Dilated Peoples and Koolism amongst others.
Rocking the stage with his sensational live band, Come Together will be the exclusive Sydney show on his Life of Riley album tour. With the help of his friends Jimmy Recard and Rapunzel. Drapht’s incredible live show is sure to bring the bounce to Come Together, leaving punters with a bigger grin than the face they walked in to the Park through. Joining Drapht at Come Together is Urthboy, alongside his two cohorts Jane & Elgusto. Acclaimed albums, awards, nominations and a recent European tour are testament to Urthboy’s status as one of the scene’s true champions, with his set sure to demonstrate exactly why.
Fellow card-carrying member of the hit making fraternity Illy will also be hustling up the highway from Melbourne to take part in this hip hop throw down. With his single It Can Wait continuing to rock radios around the country, Illy’s spitfire delivery is sure to have the masses heaving from the get go. Come Together 2011 also sees the familiar faces of Muph & Plutonic return to drop their brand of head nodding hi-jinks. With renowned producer Plutonic Lab swapping the switches for the skins and supplying the beats for Muph to play verbal wordsmith, this party starting one, two punch will deliver a set to remember.

With his calling card of soulful, boom bap beats M-Phazes arrives at Come Together with an ARIA in his record bag courtesy of his work with Bliss’N’Eso and also from his 2010 album Good Gracious. The Tongue will also be on hand to step in and step it up, ready to take the Big Top over with mic in hand and cypher at the ready. Sharpening his razor sharp flow in the battle arena, The Tongue broke through with his high rotation bangers The Punch and Bad Education and with his recent release Alternative Energy following the same path, The Tongue is one live performer not to be missed. The lyrically gifted Mantra has harnessed his word play and elevated himself into the upper stratosphere of Australian MC’s. With the recent release of his debut long player; The Power of the Spoken, Mantra is one of Melbourne finest.  With a roll call of Aussie hip hop hierarchy; Come Together 2011 has also chopped the ticket price with this year’s tickets at only $59 (inc gst and booking fee) which includes access to the Park’s rides between 1pm and 5pm on the day for Come Together fans. Come Together is a licensed all ages event. Doors open at 4.30pm, finishing at 11pm.

Consider yourself a L-plate Drapht waiting in the wings?
Triple J and Come Together are offering the opportunity for one talented hip hop Unearthed winner to flex their flow in the spotlight. Drapht – The Life of Riley: Drops April 1 + Download ‘On & On’ for FREE

31 03 2011

Triple J, Drapht,The Ayems Records and Fidelity Corporation are incredibly proud and happy to announce the release of Drapht’s new studio album The Life of Riley, as well as the tour to launch said album around the nation. It’s been a long time coming and a hell of a process but we assure you, The Life of Riley has been worth the wait.

To quote the man himself, “Never in my life have I put so much time and energy into one single thing. Mentally, the making of this album broke me and drove me to the brink of insanity on so many different occasions, a song wasn’t worthy of the record unless it did so.”
The Life of Riley will be the first release on Drapht’s own label The Ayems, which is distributed through Sony Music. “The concepts and subject matter around The Life of Riley are based on living the life you want to live, not abiding by society’s pressures and no longer working for the man. So I thought it would be a fitting time to start my own label The Ayems. The Life of Riley will be released on April 1st.

The Rapunzel single was the first taste of The Life of Riley and was a very very big track at radio, as well as coming in a healthy #12 on the Triple J Hottest 100. We are proud to announce that Rapunzel has now been certified platinum on the ARIA single charts. The Life of Riley is an incredibly diverse album with material derived from a wide range of influences, and adds to what is already a broad musical palette over the breadth of Drapht‘s back catalogue.

Of course the best way to celebrate a new album is to get out and tour it, and Drapht is leaving no stone unturned on that front. We are very happy to announce that not only is Drapht heading out on the Groovin’ The Moo Festival to take it to the regionals, he is getting his full live show together to showcase The Life of Riley to the nation. It’s a large tour with a large line-up, with Drapht enlisting his good friends Mantra and The Tongue as supports to help give the album the launch it deserves. Dates are below, and relax Sydney, we have a special date for you to be announced soon!

Drapht’s ‘Rapunzel’ Film Clip

24 11 2010

Check out the brand new clip from Drapht for his latest track Rapunzel. The track is produced by Trials from Funkoars and mixed by DJ Reflux.

It’s been a long time between drinks for west coast emcee and wordsmith Drapht. Having had a massive 08 and 09, most of 2010 has been spent teaming up with Brothers Grimm producer Trials working on the follow up.Drapht has been holed up in a home studio writing, crossing out, rewriting, cutting, pasting, cutting again, deleting, occasionally banging his head against a wall and then finally kicking back and smiling. The success of 2008’s Brothers Grimm, which spawned the massive radio hits Jimmy Recard and Falling (Jimmy Recard was the #2 most played track on JJJ in 08 and was #10 in the Hottest 100 as well as receiving Nova rotation and V Ripe Clip of the Week) has brought with it a range of pressures and expectations, not only from Drapht’s fans but also from the man himself, who isn’t exactly known for resting on his laurels and not moving forward.

So has it been worth the wait and the blood sweat and tears? Well, we can’t give you the whole picture until the album is out early next year (the album title is The Life of Riley by the way) but the first taste is about to be revealed. It’s called Rapunzel and it’s the perfect way to lead into summer, let alone an album.

To quote Drapht “The love hate relationship that is Rapunzel- a subject that I had that was extremely close to my heart, so naturally the song itself was one of the easiest to write, but one of the hardest to nail in the recording process. Has to be one of my favourites to date, has made me fall in love with her all over again!”

Rapunzel hit the radio Monday on Triple J and the judging by the response, it’s going to be another massive album. Stay tuned for the styling video, being worked on at the moment.

The best way for people to get an idea of the full scope of the album is to come along to the Rapunzel tour where selected cuts from the new record will get a showing, as well as a wide smattering from Drapht’s back catalogue.
It’s going to be the only shows this year, and it’s going to be big.
