Slaughterhouse – Australian Tour 2013

4 01 2013

Slaughterhouse Australian Tour 2013, with special guest ScHoolboy Q and Full Tote Odds. Shady Records Hip Hop super-group Slaughterhouse, are celebrating the release of their sophomore album “welcome to: Our House”, with their very first Australian Tour.

SlaughterHouse Australian Tour 2013

The group consisting of four of the most prolific lyricists the rap game has ever seen in Detroit’s Royce da 5’9,’ New Jersey’s Joe Budden, Long Beach, California’s Crooked I and Brooklyn’s Joell Ortiz, have been steadily touring the USA and Europe in 2012 to packed houses and phenomenal reviews. Joining the super-group is currently one of the hottest and most hyped lyricists to come out of LA, Black Hippy Crew’s ScHoolboy Q, who is leading the way in a generation of emerging new MC’s. Australian Hip Hop group Full Tote Odds, whose debut album Place Your Bets has recently been released on Obese Records, are also along for the ride.

For four guys with their own separate successful careers, Slaughterhouse has accomplished a huge amount as a collective in the five years since they formed. The foursome came together in a most unusual way—beginning with an intense rap battle between Joe Budden and Royce da 5’ 9” that gave way to a mutual admiration society and eventually a song featuring all four members, titled “Slaughterhouse”, which appeared on Joe Budden’s 2008 digital album, Halfway House.

The group found critical acclaim, success and a cult following with their first releases Slaughterhouse and Slaughterhouse EP. Under the guidance of one of the greatest MCs ever, Eminem, the groups much-deserved success culminated with the release of their 2012 Shady Records debut “welcome to: Our House”, which came in at #2 on the US Billboard Charts. Says Eminem of the group, “When I hear these guys, I wanna step my game up, and when they hear each other, it’s a competitive atmosphere and that’s better for Hip Hop.”

For the first time in a long time, Hip Hop can genuinely say that a new generation of MC’s have arrived. Sure, there are those who helped birth the culture and music and people who can say they grew up with it. But now, you are witnessing perhaps the first generation that can say they were raised on Hip Hop almost exclusively. If you don’t agree, you’re probably not listening to enough ScHoolboy Q.

Noting Notorious B.I.G., Nas and 50 Cent as his biggest influences, the California lifestyle can easily be heard in his voice, slang and content. His ability to mesh the two allows a delivery that makes him standout on every track he spits on, and has caught the attention and respect of fans and the industry alike. As a member of the Black Hippy Crew, alongside Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q dropped his debut album Setbacks in 2011 on the Top Dawg Entertainment Label, to major critical acclaim. His follow up, Habits & Contradictions dropped in 2012.

Featuring members Levelheaded, Slats, Eslev, Ross Read and DJ Hacksaw, Adelaide Hills Hip Hop collective Full Tote Odds have been making waves nationally with their singles Southern Wind, What’s Going Down and Adrenaline receiving airplay across Australia. Fresh off the Homebake Tour, Full Tote Odds released their debut album Place Your Bets in November, and will tour the country in support of the release throughout 2013.

Profecy – Walk With Me

20 08 2012

After a highly praised presence in the Australian hip-hop scene with his previous release Let The Music Play in 2010, the emcee Profecy, has been busy in the studio working on his follow-up release expected for release late September. The first single Walk With Me from the EP of the same title goes live today, for free download. Walk With Me is a a critique of the modern adversities of today’s generation and is an utterly life-grounded piece.

Profecy grew up in Lismore, on the NSW coast, and with little to no scene he found a way to go at it alone with a makeshift garage studio. Here he learned the subtle balance in delivering rhymes over a given beat – something he would later become quite astute at. He has since moved to Brisbane to pursue his music career.

Walk With Me is produced by American hip hop producer DJ Corbett, who is responsible for producing for hip-hop heavy weights including Saigon, Royce Da 5’9 and Bun B. Corbett not only provides the backdrop for Profecy’s melodic flow, he also shares his vocal talents on the chorus. It’s a bass-heavy, chilled-out track yet provides a deep emotional message.

Jay Daniels – The Drop-In

11 09 2011

Joshua “Jay Daniels” Neal (born August 23, 1990) is a 21 year old writer, rapper and singer from Sydney, Australia. At the age of 16 Jay began writing lyrics and recording songs out of his own bedroom. Jay developed his own style throughout the years, and improved his craft as he posted his music on various hip-hop forums, receiving feedback from other unsigned artists across the globe.

2010 was the year which Jay decided he really wanted to push things forward, which began with Jay building his own home studio, which he had worked towards setting up over a period of time. Jay began recording his first project The Drop-In in August, 2010. Early in the process, radio presenter Christo, whom at the time was working for The Edge had shown interest in Jay’s record Man Of The Hour. The song was soon after featured on The Edge’s unsigned hype mixtape, promoted on air and via their official website. Meanwhile, Jay rocked his first open mic set at the Loft Bar in Sydney, and shortly after, Jay teamed up with fellow Sydney hip-hop artist Carter (formerly known as Syko). Together they performed shows in various locations around Sydney’s western suburbs.

Carter & Jay began working on music together, which resulted in a song from Carter’s debut album titled My Own Worst Enemy. Shortly after the two released a free viral record titled Change. This provoked a strong buzz surrounding the two artists collaborations. In a defining moment in his early career, Jay teamed up with Hip-Hop Legend Royce Da 5’9″ for the very successful Long Way Home record, produced by UK beat-maker Charlie Hilton. The song was featured on all the biggest hip-hop blogs across the internet. 2DopeBoyz, NahRight, Hear-It-First, HipHopDx & DJBooth were among the list of well known websites to support the record. At the time, this would serve as the first official release from his upcoming project.

Jay was hungry for more exposure, and began emailing various promoters around Australia, he finally came across the Kings Cross venue, Bank Nightclub. Jay had his first nightclub performance on a Saturday night, peaktime. At the time, Jay Daniels teamed up with local film crew Question to shoot a video for his record Too Many People that he wrote for himself & fellow Sydney artist Lana Rita. The video was released online via youtube and facebook, and gained Jay much of the local attention he’d been looking for. After previous turn downs from local radio, Jay Daniels’ record Ain’t From Round Here was accepted by Sydney’s The Edge 96.1 for airplay in August 2011. Jay has successfully wrapped up his first project The Drop-In, set for release in later this month.

Taken from Jay Daniels upcoming project, The Drop-In.

With the support and encouragement from fans and friends, and a strong confidence in what he does, he’s ready to push his music career further than ever before. Keep your eyes peeled.

A-Diction – Walkin’ Alone (August 6)

12 07 2010

The name A-Diction says it all; wordplay, cleverness, and an overall obsession with the previous two points.
Born and raised in Melbourne, the duo consists of emcee’s Breach and Boltz. Breach, the precise wordsmith with focussed flow and witty punchlines, and Boltz, the crooner known for his explosive debut album The Wishlist, which featured international heavyweight Royce da 5’9” and local producer extraordinaire M-Phazes.

Yet, having released a number of well received works (2005’s To be Announced EP; last year’s The Three Year Itch mixtape and more recently the In Good Company mixtape), the group have never released a full length LP; until now.
Their debut album, Walkin’ Alone, was painstakingly crafted from the rough and tumble reality of Melbourne life, and is best summarised by the events that led up to its release; it is an album that is bipolar in its thinking, a colourful swatch book of memories and observations that flitters between the lows of poverty and despair, and the highs of friendship and hilarity.

Years in the making, the LP has left no stone unturned when it comes to actively seeking musical collaborators; A-Diction have spared no expense in working with the likes of M-Phazes (Drapht, Bliss N Eso), Jase (Phrase, Daniel Merriweather, Pegz), Whisper (Equills), Lewis One (Twice As Nice) Mules (Hyjak N Torcha, Choose Mics) and enlisted the vocal talents of Vida Sunshyne and Bekah.

Behind the mic they are joined by a broad spectrum of respected and up and coming emcee’s with Haunts and G-Force making memorable contributions; in addition Scott Burns, Billy Bunks, Whisper, Raven and Fraksha join A-Diction on a posse cut that is sure to be an instant underground classic. Meanwhile Doc Felix, DJ Mathmatics and DJ Juice provide some world class cutting on the album.

Available nation wide through Obese Records Distribution on August 6th 2010, the album, 4 years in production, reinforces the adage that good things come to those who wait, and clearly demonstrates the power of quality over quantity. Backed with some impressive artwork by renowned illustrator R. Lyons, Walkin’ Alone is a definitive all in one package; a fitting debut for artists with ten times the commercial success, let alone two poetic Melbourne partners in rhyme.

M-Phazes – Good Gracious! New Album (Feb 26)

14 01 2010

M-Phazes is the perfect example of a diamond in the rough.  Born and raised in the Gold Coast of Australia and relatively isolated from Hip-Hop culture, M-Phazes has carved a strong niche for himself that has allowed his production to be heard on a global scale.

Drawing inspiration from legendary producers such as Battlecat, Pete Rock and the late J-Dilla, M-Phazes has has formulated his own sound over the years that can be defined by soulful melodies coupled with loose, smacking drums.

Landing his first U.S. placement in 2005 on Supastition’s “Chain Letters”, M-Phazes has been on a steady climb and hasn’t looked back.  In March of 2008, M-Phazes earned himself a first place victory at Sha Money’s prestigious One Stop Shop Producers Conference Beat Battle, an event that’s held annually in Phoenix, Arizona.  M-Phazes‘ production was judged by a panel of legendary producers and artists that consisted of DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Swizz Beats, DJ Toomp, No I.D, Hi-Tek, Don Cannon, Chamillionaire and of course, Sha Money.  M-Phazes blew me away with his sound” – Jake One.

The last round of the battle was held on Sunday, March 9th, a date which marked the 11th anniversary of the passing of the late Notorious B.I.G. In remembrance of this date, M-Phazes prepared a track titled ‘Brooklyn‘ that was played in honor of the late Biggie. From the first kick to the last snare, this tribute beat caused the entire judging panel and audience to literally leap out of their seats!  This track received a standing ovation that secured M-Phazes victory.  Shortly after, this tribute beat went on to become the backdrop for Joell Ortiz’s forthcoming single off his new album which has since been licensed for the major motion picture Brooklyn’s Finest featuring Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke & Wesley Snipes (directed by Antwon Fuqua, Training Day).

Since the One Stop, M-Phazes has received an Aria Award for his production on Bliss N Eso’s “Flying Colors album, has had his production featured on two college chart topping singles, has signed a landmark deal with Mushroom Publishing and has landed several placements, including a major label placement with Amerie (Feenix Rising Entertainment/Island Def Jam Music Group) as well as a co-production credit alongside super producer JR Rotem (Belugah Heights) for his artist Mann.

To date, M-Phazes has built a very strong discography that includes placements with several key players in today’s hip-hop marketplace that include Pharoahe Monch, CL Smooth, M.O.P., Mela Machinko, Royce Da 5’9″, Emilio Rojas, Heltah Skeltah, Donny Goines, Cory Gunz, Elzhi (Slum Village), Freeway, Marvin Priest (son of Maxi Priest), Termanology, Sean Price, Sadat X and more.

M-Phazes is living proof that no matter where you’re from, you can make an impact on the rest of the world.  As his dreams become a reality, M-Phazes places no boundaries on his craft that he hopes will allow him the opportunity to work with artists that define a wide brush stroke of today’s urban music climate.

M-Phazes will be once again bringing the bangers when he drops his new album titled ‘Good Gracious’ in February this year.

M-Phazes has worked with a whole heap of hip hop artists on this one, including: Drapht, Bliss N Eso, Phrase, Illy, Pegz, Muph n Plutonic, Delta, Solo, Spit Syndicate, Dialectrix, Mantra, Nfa, Nine High, Forthwrite (360 n Pez), 13th Son and Haunts.

This will surely be on of the top albums of 2010, we know it’s early but we have faith! You can check out a sneak preview in the video below.

Skryptcha’s Top 10 of 2009!

22 12 2009

After a poor showing last year, it’s time to get some aussie hip hop in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2009. Each week leading up to the countdown allaussie hip hop will provide you with a selected Australian artists  ‘Top 10′ of the year.

To kick things off we have Skryptcha, the 22-year-old Sydney MC who released his Left To Write EP earlier in the year which featured hits like Food For Thought and a fav of ours Turtles. Here’s a bit on what Skryptcha had to say about his upcoming album titled ‘One Way’ due for release early 2010.

Expect some insane production from the likes of my man Chasm, M-Phazes, Jase & Ante Escobar, among others.  Almost half of the album has been produced by the legendary Domingo from NY and I can tell you, these beats are going to blow a lot of people. Domingo’s been an absolute legend in working with me on arrangements for the bangers and I can’t wait to play this new shiet to everyone!!!

Skryp’s Top 10 for 2009.
Thundamentals – The Mash
The Thundas had a huge year.. I absolutely loved their album and this was my favourite joint off it. Probably the catchiest, funkiest joint to come out of Oz hip hop this year. Tuka & Jeswon really smashed this track with some incredible flows. The beat grabs you right from the minute it drops in, it’s definitely the perfect track for Summer.

Hilltop Hoods – Still Standing
This was my favourite track off the Hoods’ massive album ‘State of the Art’. The whole album was killer but it’s the beat that really grabbed me on this track. I’m a huge fan of reggae style sounds and Suffa absolutely murdered the beat, the raps are well beyond killer too!

La Roux – Bulletproof
La Roux makes some really different music, which is sick and this track pretty much has it all. A really catchy techno beat with some fat synths and a hook that really grabs the listener. I just really love how different she is and this track was definitely a stand out for this year.

Mos Def – Auditorium feat Slick Rick
The ruler is BACK! Haha, I was so pumped to get my hands on a brand new Mos Def album this year. He’s one of my favourites of all time and was definitely at his soulful best on this one. This beat is absolutely incredible, Madlib kills it with the middle eastern sample.. The track’s topped off by some Slick Rick domination, I didn’t really know how he’d sound next to Mos but it’s killer, his verse is so chilled like the dude just knows he’s the shit. Dope, dope track!

Royce Da 5’9  – Dinnertime feat Busta Rhymes
Shiiettt, this track blew me away completely when I first heard it! The beat is huge with some massive horns pumping through your ears & Royce’s flow on this track is one of the best you will ever hear. He’s an absolute beast and completely slays this. So dope to hear Busta smashing itagain too. I’m a massive fan and an even bigger fan of this track!

Jay-Z feat Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind
This was song of the year for me. A true anthem in every sense of the word, Jay & Alicia Keys pay homage to the ‘home of hip hop’, New York. Another killer beat with a massive hook from Keys. I love Jay’s imagery on this track, from the Knicks to Yankees to Broadway, to the whole NY vibe. This song is just large, real takeover feel to this one!

The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition
This is one really hypnotic track, the type of song you just get completely lost in. The voice of the lead singer Dougy, is pretty damn incredible and just glides over the fast paced drums. A pretty huge song for this year and one that plenty of people have fallen in love with, with good reason.

Sarah Blasko – We Won’t Run
Sarah Blasko is one incredible artist and she totally nailed it with this album. I’ve been a huge fan of Peter Bjorn & John for quite a while so to have Bjorn Yttling from the group produce this album was always going to deliver something pretty special. The production on this track is bananas. I love a good strong bassline on any track and this one is just so chiller, Blasko sits on it really nicely. The track builds up really smoothly to the hook too, which really launches the whole track to the next level with some nice keys behind it.

Eddie Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros – Home
This track was probably the biggest surprise of the year for me. It was one of those tracks that I just heard in the car one day and was instantly sucked in by it. A good solid whistling section is always something that catches a listener haha and this grabs you from the first second. The female vocalist on this track has such a like 60′s folk voice, it sounds like something from a completely different decade, which is why I think I dig it so much. It’s a completely hippied out track with some beautiful lyrics.

Jay-Z – Death of Autotune
This was the first taste I got of Blueprint 3 and I was completely geed after hearing this. Jay put the auto-tune trend to bed. The beat from No ID is bananas with that swinging guitar running back and forth you can’t help but nod your head to this one, the horns that come in are hectic too. Lyrically, this track is a real stand out, ‘This is Sinatra at the Opera, bring a blonde’. Haha, it was dope for Jay to come out like this and really attack what a lot of artists were doing the States, artists he’s probably been involved with in the past too. Dope to see a boss getting on top of another ‘trend’ on such an amazing beat.

What a killer year we had in 2009! Can’t wait for the next one!

Stay tuned next week for another artist’s top ten of the year and make sure you get you vote on in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2009. Follow the link here to vote.
