Seth Sentry – Dear Science

7 02 2013

Just to put it in perspective, 2012 was a massive year for Seth Sentry… three high-rotation singles, an album debuting at #6 on the ARIA charts, triple j’s feature album of the week and Channel [V]’s Oz Artist Of The Year award… but seeing as though he got to kick off 2013 by driving a DeLorean, this is already the year to beat.

seth sentry dear science

Featuring said time machine, a host of characters and some highly dubious acting performances from Seth, Mantra, DJ B-Two, and Grey Ghost, the clip to Seth’s latest single Dear Science has everything. Well, everything except hoverboards, as the fan-favourite song points out. Directed by Grey Ghost and Nick Rieve, Dear Science takes an adult revisitation of a childhood moment and asks the important scientific question, ‘Where’s my Hoverboard?’

After an exclusive premiere on Channel V, the official Dear Science video clip was been unleashed. And while scientists of the world get right on that (technically they have until 2015 to make Seth a hoverboard), Seth Sentry is gearing up for another big year, starting off with the 2013 Melbourne Big Day Out. Following on from last year’s heavy touring schedule and performances at festivals like Homebake, Fat As Butter, Sprung and the first Channel [V] Island Party, this year will be even busier than the last, starting things off with the monster summer anthem that is Dear Science.

Taken from Seth’s debut album This Was Tomorrow (released through his own label, High Score Records, and celebrated by Time Off Magazine as “a landmark Australian hip hop record”) Dear Science follows in the tradition of Seth’s previous singles Float Away, My Scene and The Waitress Song with light-hearted wordplay and big sing-along chorus.

Produced by Trials (Funkoars, Drapht), Dear Science is exactly the kind of song that helped make 2012 so successful for Seth, and is the perfect way to get this summer cranking. Dear Science is the third single taken from This Was Tomorrow, out now through High Score Records.

Interview: Alex Williamson (The Loosest Aussie Bloke Ever)

31 01 2013

If you don’t know the name by now, you need to check yourself cunt. Alex Williamson aka The Loosest Aussie Bloke Ever is taking not only the internet by storm, but also carving his way to becoming one of Australia’s most in demand stand up comics. With upcoming shows at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and also The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Alex’s loose brand of comedy is proving to be a juggernaut.

Loosest Aussie

aahh: With over 25 million views on YouTube and over 150,000 subscribers, it’s hard to imagine YouTube without your video’s. What has it been like becoming a famous face on a platform like YouTube?
Alex: It’s whack. People stare at me in public and I can tell they’re thinking, “is that the sketchy cunt off the internet?”,  I just flip out because when you’re stoned everyday you already feel like everyone’s staring at you. But life’s the same. I’m broke as shit. I hang out with some fucking ferals at times also. Just whoever has weed basically.

aahh: You started performing stand up comedy back in 2007 and in 2009 you won the RAW comedy festival. Was that the point when you first thought “yup, I can make a go of this comedy stuff”?
Alex: Yeah I was always a bit of a performer in high school, did drama and all that shit, so I figured I could give stand up a healthy crack. I’d watched everyone from Seinfeld to Rodney Rude, and I was bloody obsessed with making cunts laugh (and MILF porn).

Alex W

aahh: You also did a stint on radio, is that because you thought you had a head for radio?
Alex: Oi get fucked mate, my head is symmetrical and shit, don’t give me that head for radio business! I only did radio because it’s one of the few media platforms you can just sit there flat-out wanking, whilst being a performer.

aahh: The title of your brand new Fringe show is Alex Williamson and Friends. How long did it take to come up with the name for that?
Alex: I didn’t even come up with the name. My manager came up with it because I fell asleep in a crack den for 6 nights and the deadline for the show name came up lol.

aahh: Tell us a bit about your “Friends”? Are they cool cunts?
Alex: Yeah man, I have these characters, Loose Aussie, who does shit like wear the same clothes two days in a row (he’s fucked in the head aye), and my other character is Musical Drug Dealer, who does songs about fingering teenagers and shelving pingas. It’s deep.

aahh: Speaking of cunts, we’ve just seen The Loosest Aussie Ever team up with a series of hip hop artists including Seth Sentry, Kerser and Eso of Bliss N Eso for a few short videos. What has it been like working with these guys and are you a fan?
Alex: I’m a big fan. I didn’t listen to much hip hop in high school, but I’ve really got into it last few years, and god damn it’s catchy and original shit. All the lads I’ve teamed up with so far are true pros (and sick actors turns out). I’m actually working on a comedy/electro/hip-hop/drug-trip album currently, so stay tuned.

aahh: We recently played the ‘cunt’ game on my mates Facebook wall, are there any movies you forgot to include in the ‘You Can’t Say That’ Video that need a mention?
Alex: “A Few Good Cunts” made me laugh my ass off. Some cunt tweeted that at me.

Musical Drug Dealer

aahh: We hear that your currently in LA, what are you doing over there?
Alex: Meeting all sorts of TV and film crews, as well as loosing money in Vegas and exchanging phone numbers with homeless people when searching for drugs. Fucking Hollywood baby.

aahh: We follow you on Instagram and no surprises to anyone, you’ve been loving California and it’s new marijuana laws. Are you planning to relocate to Cali specifically for that reason?
Alex: I’d love to do 6 months a year here. There’s just so many Cali sluts that need to be throttled by an Aussie lol you feel me?

aahh: To finish off, why should people come see you at the Adelaide Fringe & Melbourne International Comedy Festivals?
Alex: Coz I’m a real mother fucker, and there’s way too many fake mother fuckers out there. I can also ride my push bike really fast.

You can get more information and tickets to all of Alex Williamson’s shows by following the links below. Be quick, this shit will sell fast.

Put The Work In – Mr. Hill and Rahjconkas

15 10 2012

Amidst the continued stair-climb by Brisbane collective Born Fresh to set a foundation for quality local hiphop in the city; Mr Hill and Rahjconkas release Put The Work In, the first single from their forthcoming sophomore album Dead End Street.

2012 has been a busy year for the duo, following the successful reception of their debut LP The Feedback, with tours, guest appearances and collaborations presenting themselves consistently. Since January, the two have toured with label-mate Seven, 360, Seth Sentry, Illy and the Funkoars as well as supporting US successes Atmosphere and Evidence and locals Thundamentals, Urthboy and Spit Syndicate. There was even time for interstate headline and Victorian Flood Benefit shows, as well as Mr Hill grossing over 100 000 youtube views with a remix side-project with Seven.

Even with a plate so obviously full, the geographically disadvantaged boys put forth their new single Put The Work In just 9 months after the release of their debut LP. Put The Work In honour’s the ethic of the two and their peers, hinting at picking up the shovel and digging, rather than waiting for the world to come for them. With a very successful 2012 almost in the bag, quickly leap frogging others in the genre, Mr Hill and Rahjconkas are preparing to go even bigger in 2013.

Seth Sentry – ‘This Was Tomorrow’ debuts at #6 & is triple j’s feature album

26 09 2012

Melbourne rapper Seth Sentry has debuted at an impressive #6 on the ARIA Charts this week, with his first full-length album This Was Tomorrow. The album has been collecting a long list of glowing reviews, including from triple j radio as their Feature Album all of this week.

The huge national album tour has kicked off this week, including a much-talked about set at Newcastle’s Fat As Butter Festival. With the Queensland shows now ticked off, Seth has 6 Australian states left to visit. Dominating the airwaves with the infectious singles My Scene and Float Away, Seth Sentry has dropped one of the most anticipated albums of 2012 with his killer debut. The maiden release on Seth’s own label, High Score Records, This Was Tomorrow has found itself falling into the welcome arms of fans and industry alike.

Drawing listeners in with an unpretentious and utterly relatable voice, This Was Tomorrow leaves the conventions of Australian hip hop for new ground, and shows just how advanced Seth Sentry has become as an artist, and just how limitless the genre can be. Featuring production from Styalz Fuego (360), Trials (Funkoars, Drapht) and Matik (Pez, Bliss n Eso), This Was Tomorrow exhibits a perfect balance of classic hip hop samples and cuts, and live band energy.

The album’s second single, Float Away has projected Seth to a whole new level. The 70’s British comedy-inspired film clip received over 18,000 views in under a week. It was written by Jeremy Koren (aka Grey Ghost) with Co-Director/Cinematographer Nick Rieve and was claimed by Channel V as the ‘Ripe Clip Of The Week’ as well as ‘Indie Clip Of The Week’ on Rage. As a single, Float Away was cited by influential artist 360 as his personal pick for top 10 in the 2012 triple j Hottest 100.

Anything you could want to know about Seth’s personality is laid out in the album’s rhymes and turns of phrase, strewn across its head-nodding beats and bombastic choruses, right through to its pop culture references. This Was Tomorrow is a solid work of art that stands as both entertainment and culture… as songs you can switch your brain off and sing along to, or a window into the mind of a truly gifted artist.

Seth Sentry – This Was Tomorrow

6 09 2012

It’s been four years since Seth Sentry released his The Waiter Minute EP, that featured the huge hit single The Waitress Song. Seth is now ready to storm Australia with his debut LP This Was Tomorrow. Released today, Seth has already dropped two massive single’s from the album, in the form of My Scene and Float Away.

Seth describes his anxiousness in getting the release in to the hands of his fans. “I’m feeling excited and nervous, the album’s finished now, so I just want to get it out there.” Describing the concept behind This Was Tomorrow, Seth explains “I guess the album is pretty random in the topics that I cover. I talk about things that I want, where I am in my life and where I’ve come from. You could say it’s all about the past, present and future. In terms of the future, I have written a letter to science where I ask where the fuck my hover board is.” Since his debut The Waiter Minute EP, Seth’s identifies his biggest change, and that has been his confidence level. “When I first started working with Matik I was just trying to find my sound, something that I was happy with. I consider myself a wordy rapper and I have some pretty heavy influences, it took time to find the style that I was happy with. Coming into it this album, I guess didn’t have to do that searching. I was able to concentrate on making the music I wanted to make.”

The first single from the album was released earlier this year and was Seth’s way of letting everyone know he is on his way. My Scene, a light-hearted humorous track, raises questions of human identity and lifestyle. “I guess it’s easy to identify groups of people in society from an outside perspective. We can easily say ‘oh that’s a hipster’ or ‘that’s a business man’ but for me personally, it was a lot harder to pin down. I guess a lot of people find that’s the case, they’re not quite sure where they fit in amongst society and even with their peers. It was just where my head was at the time and also what I had seen. A lot of people say, ok I’m going to be like this and go out and purchase the ‘costume’. I had a friend who was a mad goth, I didn’t see him for a few years and then I bumped into him one day on the street and he was a full Rastafarian, with the dreads and coloured beanie to match. It’s just weird how people do that”.

Victorian producer and DJ, Matik produced Seth’s debut EP and is back again helping out on This Was Tomorrow. “Matik has produced five joints on this album, he’s a lot busier now then he was 10 years ago. I hooked up with Matik about 5 years ago when I was putting on a weekly club night. Matik was working with Pez back then, as a crew. I had got my hands on a demo they had at the time and there was this real cute track on there called Summer Days, which is now the Festival Song, but it was a little different back then. It was about surfboarding and riding scooters and all that. So I got them out.”

The second single from the album is titled Float Away and is produced by Styalz Fuego (360, Aston Shuffle) who also produces 5 tracks on the album. The film clip for Float Away is directed by Grey Ghost (Jeremedy). “Grey Ghost is the loveliest cunt, he is the best dude, like they nicest dude you’ll ever meet. He is also super creative, he can do it all. Draw, rap, sing, he is in a heap of a bands and wanted to try his hand at making videos. He directed one of Xavier Rudds videos and also worked with Matik. We had this idea of doing the clip in this crazy Woody Allen/Faulty Towers vibe, I love how it turned out.”

Float Away was the first track that Seth worked on with Styalz. “Styalz is amazing, all his beats, drums and horns are classic. When you work with him, he provides you with everything, the beat is structured, everything’s there, all the bridges, he is very fast. He is just one of those dudes that is always in the studio, he’s constantly inspired and inspiring, he’s a real pro. For Float Away he sent me this beat that was real cute and simple in style. Obviously not in structure. It wasn’t something that I’d consider my usual style. The beat had elements of pop, nothing against dudes doing that, I just prefer listening to heavy hitting classic’s, but this had something that drew me in. I wrote 3 different versions and performed 3 different takes and picked that track. I’m so wordy, it’s not easy for me to sometimes pull it back. In this track there’s an 8 bar verse a 16 and a 12, which are mammoth bars. I was thinking the track would be good for a single, it had a lighter sound and I didn’t have to sacrifice the lyrical side of things, none of this dumb shit.”

Seth Sentry’s new LP This Was Tomorrow will be released on September 14 on his newly created label High Score Records, with independent distribution through Inertia. You can pre-order now and score yourself some cool pre-order bonus’, if you hurry. Also just announced is his massive 14 date This Was Tomorrow album tour which includes stops at Fat As Butter and Sprung Festivals.I’ll be taking B. Two, who won this year’s DMC’s championships. He was defending his title from 08′ because there hasn’t been a DMC in Australia for the last 4 years. He is a beast and massively overqualified to be my DJ. I will also be bringing Grey Ghost.”

Seth Sentry – This Was Tomorrow

17 07 2012

It has arrived. The debut album from Melbourne MC Seth Sentry will be unleashed on September 14. The album, titled This Was Tomorrow, is a ground breaking and utterly relatable hip-hop masterpiece. To bring the album to the fans, Seth has announced a 14-date tour through cities and regional centres in September and October, including appearances at Fat As Butter and Sprung Festivals.

From the incredible success of The Waitress Song (2009), to the current radio smash singles My Scene and the brand new second single, Float Away, This Was Tomorrow is indicative of the exponential rate at which local hip-hop is evolving. Bold, atmospheric and almost orchestral; it is a grand and ambitious gesture from a humble and entirely creative artist. Not contempt with cashing in and selling out, Seth Sentry has laid the foundations for his future by setting up his own record label, High Score Records, with independent distribution through Inertia. This Was Tomorrow will be the label’s first release. The album comes down to how big a music fan Seth Sentry is.

Within the context of hip-hop, he is both a student and a master… a protégé. An aficionado who wanted to be a part of the world of music he could lose himself in as a listener. And even though it is still early in the game, Seth Sentry’s contributions to this world are already nothing short of outstanding. This Was Tomorrow will be released September 14. The This Was Tomorrow album tour happens throughout September and October. Tickets on sale August 2. Seth Sentry’s brand new single Float Away with production from Styalz Fuego, is available on iTunes now.
