The Great Gatsby – OST

27 04 2013

Drawing on his unique and unrivalled position in popular culture, Jay Z (with collaborator and the film’s executive music consultant Jeymes Samuel) has worked with Luhrmann and his team on the project over the past two years, translating the Jazz Age sensibility of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel into the musical equivalents of our own times, through the blending of hip-hop, traditional jazz and other contemporary musical textures.

The Great Gatsby

Luhrmann stated, “F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel is peppered with contemporary music references specific to the story’s setting of 1922. While we acknowledge, as Fitzgerald phrased it, ‘the Jazz Age,’ and this is the period represented on screen, we-our audience-are living in the ‘hip-hop age’ and want our viewers to feel the impact of modern-day music the way Fitzgerald did for the readers of his novel at the time of its publication.”

“The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of one’s introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion. It’s ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist. The imagination Baz brought to ‘Moulin Rouge!’ made it a masterpiece, and ‘Romeo + Juliet’s’ score wasn’t just in the background; the music became a character. This film’s vision and direction has all the makings of an epic experience,” JAY Z said in a previous statement.

Jay Z’s own “No Church in the Wild,” which he was recording when he and Luhrmann first came together, is included in the film, along with his original “100$ Bill.” The first single to drop is the hauntingly melodious track “Young and Beautiful,” from recent Brit Award winner for Best International Female Solo Artist, Lana Del Rey. Del Rey collaborated with Luhrmann in creating the song.

Del Rey said, “It was an honour to work with Baz Lurhmann on his amazing adaptation of one of the most extraordinary books ever written. The movie is highly glamorous and exciting; Rick Nowels and I were thrilled to write the song for the film.”

Luhrmann also worked personally alongside good friends and collaborators Florence Welch, of Florence + The Machine, and The xx. Each of the artists worked to picture.

The highly eclectic soundtrack also features songs performed by such artists as Beyoncé x André 3000; Fergie + Q Tip + GoonRock; Coco O. of Quadron, Gotye; Nero; and Sia. Moviegoers will also recognise a few favourites with a new twist, such as Jack White’s interpretation of U2′s “Love Is Blindness,” Beyoncé x André 3000 collaborating on Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black,” and Bryan Ferry’s new take on a couple of classics: his own “Love Is The Drug,” and, with Emeli Sandé, Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love.” New songs by Florence + The Machine, Lana Del Rey, Nero, will.i.am and The xx were written for scenes in the film, and appear on the soundtrack.

The score is composed by Luhrmann’s regular collaborator, Craig Armstrong, who worked with the director on “Moulin Rouge!” and “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet.” Both the standard album and the deluxe edition will be released worldwide by Universal Music. In Australia, the soundtrack will be released on May 10th.

The full track list for “The Great Gatsby” standard soundtrack album is as follows:

1. 100$ Bill – JAY Z
2. Back To Black – Beyoncé x André 3000
3. Bang Bang – will.i.am
4. A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got) – Fergie + Q Tip + GoonRock

Dutch x Sia – Don’t Mean A Thing

10 04 2012

Emerging from Sydney’s hip hop scene, Dutch is currently working on his full length debut album. With a collection of 7 years of involvement in the Sydney Hip Hop world and a growing musical partnership with respected Sydney based producer Espa, Dutch is fast becoming a highly regarded artist with unquestionable potential.

In 2008, Dutch released a self titled mixtape and promoted this through performances at various Bondi venues such as The Eastern and The Beach Road Hotel, in 2009 Dutch worked solely on his upcoming album whilst performing around Sydney. In 2010, Dutch supported Phrase on his acclaimed Clockwork tour. Dutch creates potent yet laid back songs that reveal a tenacious aspect to his views on life. His lyrics are so honest they reveal the thoughts people have but never say. They are relatable and poignant yet are not lacking in a sense of humour.

Currently in the early stages of producing his first full length solo album, his seamless ability to perform on any platform and create rhymes to impress are part of the raw talent Dutch possesses. Here we have a free download from Dutch, a rework of Sia’s – Don’t Mean A Thing (Prod. DC Beats).

Hilltop Hoods – I Love It Feat. Sia

19 12 2011

The Hilltop Hoods have treated fans to not only one brand new film clip for their lead single I Love It, taken from the upcoming Drinking From The Sun LP, due February 2012. The clips, produced by 3 different production companies each bring a unique take on the track. Check them all out below.

Hilltop Hoods – I Love It Feat. Sia – Carl Allison & Nick Kozakis Version
Kozakis and Allison bring together a perfect fusion of direction and visuals to compliment any production. Having worked together on high and low end projects they are making a solid impact on the film & media industry. Allison brings a cinematic eye and a unique twist to his work aided by Kozakis’ innovative vision for direction.

Shot guerilla-style on a tight budget, Allison and Kozakis took a dark, stylistic approach in their rendition of ‘I Love It’. In this clip the Hoods roam the highways picking up unfortunate hitchhikers.

Hilltop Hoods – I Love It Feat. Sia – Animal Logic Version
Animal Logic is one of the worlds leading design, visual effects and animation companies. They have worked on such films as The Matrix, Moulin Rouge, 300 and Happy Feet. When creating their interpretation of ‘I Love It’ Animal Logic chose to let the viewer see the world through the eyes and imagination of a child.

Turntables become fascinating landscapes, and entryways into underground worlds, as two young children let their creativity bring their fantasy worlds to life.

Hilltop Hoods – I Love It Feat. Sia – Blue Tongue Version
The collective Blue Tongue Films was founded some 15 years ago. This gifted group of directors came together with a philosophy that by using their individual skills and strengths they could benefit each other’s projects.

Nash Edgerton (Spider, The Square) took the helm for this depiction of ‘I Love It’. Nash takes the Hoods on a journey searching through the majestic rainforest south of Sydney. Beautifully shot in the Royal National Park, this video looks more film than filmclip.

Hilltop Hoods – ‘I Love It’ Feat. Sia

25 11 2011

Hilltop Hoods make their highly anticipated return to the airwaves this month with their brand new single ‘I Love It’ Feat. Sia, which is set to drop through their own label Golden Era Records/UMA today, with production by South Australian newcomer One Above.

The single features arrangements from Jamie Messenger performed by the Bacchanalia String Quartet. It also features a special guest performance by Sia in her first collaboration with the Hoods. Their first single since 2009 and the first taste of their impending album, Drinking From The Sun, the single release also coincides with the bands first live appearances in almost 18 months as they head out on the road with Eminem in December and Big Day Out in January.

Due out February 2012 Drinking From The Sun speaks to the experience of being part of an underground culture that’s risen from obscurity to gain mainstream recognition. Even though this album is more introspective than their previous releases it maintains a balance of moody tracks and party joints that the Hoods are best known for. The album also has a fair amount of live instrumentation, and will feature a number of local and international guests.

The forthcoming release looks set to build on the success that has seen Hilltop Hoods win multiple ARIA awards, achieve double platinum album sales and play to sold out venues around Australia as well as overseas.
