Hau’s 2010 W’Rap’ Up

30 12 2010

Hau from the almighty Koolism crew has thrown together a belated Christmas message/2010 Wrap up for all the heads. Hau sent a little message with the track which you can read below.

Wrote it while coolin’ with my fam’ in Bega.
Recorded in the car using the lap top so, you know… it’s on some lo-fi business. Haha. The beat is from RUN DMC’s, ‘Christmas in Hollis’. A few random shout outs at the end… so if you didn’t hear your name and think I should’ve mentioned it, catch you next time.
Anyway, nuff talking and have a listen.”

Feel free to check Hau’s Rappertag here.

Koolism are considered to be one of Australia’s first ever hip hop groups. They formed in 1992, and consist of world-class DJ Danielsan, and equally as impressive emcee Hau. They were the first Hip Hop outfit in Australia to win an ARIA award for their album Part 3 – Random Thoughts in 2004.

The Umu is dedicated to the essence of original and classic hip hop. What does the album’s name mean you ask? As Hau puts it:

“‘Umu is a Tongan word for an underground oven. It’s a long and tiring process in which to prepare and to cook food slowly and thoroughly, but its results are rewarding and enjoyed by all who feast on it. That’s what I feel this album is like. A lot of time, money, heart and soul went into making this album. But after all that, the fruits of our labour are now ready to enjoy. And you know how Tongans eat, so you better get a big plate and fill it up!”

Koolism were, and still are one of the most respected hip hop groups in Australia. These veteran hip hoppers have toured extensively and supported some of the biggest names: De La Soul, Grandmaster Flash, J5, The Roots, Jazzy Jeff, the list goes on and on..as well as playing all the major summer festivals. The release of The Umu puts them back in the game and we look forward to all it delivers!
The Umu dropped Friday September 3.

Koolism – Behind The Scenes IX (Can’t Stand It)

1 07 2010

Koolism has started their journey back into the game and in this video you get to play fly on the wall and watch Hau laying down the first verse to Koolism’s new single, Can’t Stand It. Ignorant crew duck down!

Canberra’s finest, Koolism, are back! The mighty combination of emcee Hau Latukefu and DJ Danielsan Ichiban return more vitriolic, more pissed off, than ever. On Can’t Stand It, Hau takes fire at the Australian government’s policy of refugee detaining, the seeming hypocracy of lambasting Pauline Hanson but cheering for her on Dancing With The Stars and the general air of insouciance and apathy.

Can’t Stand It is the first taste of Koolism’s long-awaited fourth record The Umu which will drop later this year. (Aug/Sept) Be prepared to think while you dance.
Stay tuned for more production footage, recording sessions and other shenanigans from The Dojo Studios and KOA HQ, as the boys create their brand-spankin’ new album, The Umu (pron. oo-moo).

Koolism – Cant Stand It (Stream)

22 06 2010

Koolism have just leaked their brand new single Can’t Stand It. The track is making waves at the moment and has made a few ears twitch and a lot of heads turning.DJ Danielsan as always provides the backdrop to this up-tempo track, while Plutonic Lab chips in with the drums.

As for the words, emcee Hau, explains: “The lyrics were inspired by, to put it simple and plain, a lot of fuckery in this country. I definitely believe we have it a lot better than many places around the world, but at the same time, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to voice my opinion on particular things I feel are wrong. Since I have the opportunity to say something I feel is worth while, then I’;m going to capitalise on that. If you’re offended, then the shoe must fit. Wear it.”

Can’t Stand It is the tune to jump off their forth-coming album, The ‘Umu’ due out mid-2010. Below you can stream Koolism’s new track Can’t Stand It and also while your down there, check out the little doco about the name behind the album. ‘The Umu’.

Koolism New Track – Hanz High

12 01 2010

Koolism dropped a gem of an email today to those on their mailing list, calling it a belated Xmas present (cheers guys!).
I like the style Koolism use’s to deliver these types of free downloads (see Jam Master Jay Tribute post/track here). I hope we can expect to see some more freebies leading up to the release of The Umu, which is expected sometime 2010. Here is a little bit of what Hau had to say about the free track titled Hanz High (see artwork above).

This is just another example of what Daniel and I can come up with on the spontaneous tip.

We were working on ‘The ‘Umu’ in the Dojo, listening to a few records when Daniel came across a few bits and pieces that sounded like they could be a seed for a boomin’ track. He started collecting bits from here and there (naaah, no specifics with that one) and the tune started to develop into a monster.
Naturally, I started writing to it – firstly, in my head, then jotting ideas onto paper. The chorus served as the inspiration to the lyrics. The boomin’ “C’mon and raise your hands hiiigh!” could have been the driving force behind a great party track, but meh… that was too obvious. So I started thinking about the police and their overly aggressive approach to such insignificant things (as you will hear the tune).

A day or two later, we recorded the vocals. Upon completion, we both thought, “wow, this is a top tune”, but we couldn’t see it working cohesively with the rest of the tracks we have already done for the album. So, here we are. Instead of letting it gather electronic dust in the hard drive (like many other tunes we have done), we’ve decided to unleash it to you guys – the appreciative music fan. So next time you’re about to instigate a riot or warming up in the footy sheds, throw this on and get hype!

Oh, 10 points to the person who can guess the inspiration behind the intro.
