Interview: Kings Konekted – Class, Corruption & The Campaign

15 05 2013

Kings Konekted garnered a cult following among fans and hip hop luminaries alike with their 2009 pre-album release Trails to the Underlair. Looming at the edge of the underworld’s shadow, Kings Konekted are now passing off copies of their debut EP The Campaign under a jacketed arm: six tracks of street corner discussions and heavyweight production by Stricknine, Prowla and Trem.

Kings Konekted Campaign cover

aahh: The Campaign is a relentless 6 track appetiser to the highly anticipated full length album Corrupted Citizens, due later in the year. Did you think it was important to get some new music in to the hands of the heads before the new album was released?
Kings Konekted: Definitely, we had already recorded most of those joints & written to them a year or so before, so those particular tracks weren’t really fitting the cohesiveness of Corrupted Citizens in terms of the sound. The E.P seemed the perfect solution for something in-between, and once we heard those 6 tracks together it sounded correct. Trem, Prowla & Stricknine on the production blended like a fine wine.

aahh: How would you describe the tone of the brand new EP?
Kings Konekted: It’s a very concentrated and controlled overall sound. We wanted the sound of the campaign to compliment the lyrics and their approach. It’s a very serious sound. A lot of time was put into the mixing and mastering of tracks to match the raps precisely and to emphasize certain bars.

aahh: Tell us a bit about the production on the EP and who you worked with?
Kings Konekted: Well the lead single “Repertoire Strong” was handled by me (Stricknine) and the rest by Trem & Prowla who have been Class A family since 2005, when I was doing albums with Thirstin Howl and MF Grimm. Trem helped a lot with the mastering and 2nd opinions on the MF Grimm LP (2007), as did Prowla, who also dropped a beat on that album. Prowla actually did a remix for the lead single/12” “5 Finger Discount” from the Thirstin Howl III & Rack-Lo album I did in 2005 as well. So they have been watching and helping the boys craft their music since they came on board, and it was pretty much decided from day one that they would be involved and we are all forever grateful that they are.

aahh: Emcees featured on The Campaign not only include the super talented Brad Strut and Lazy Grey, we also see an appearance from US artist MF Grimm. In your own eyes what was it that these artists brought to the release
Kings Konekted: Each guest brings the correct product to the table, most of the guests had our verses to reference the tone. It definitely provided a lot more versatility to the overall sound. And again – Lazy, Grimm and Strut are also considered family with us, so even though they are feature MC’s and feature producers on this EP they are all part of the crew and you can expect to see us working closely in the future.

aahh: The video clip for Repertoire was cut with the track Good Blood & Hand Shakes, what was the concept behind that decision?
Kings Konekted: The concept for the clip arose as to not having decided on a single to release. Strick came up with the idea based on an old clip from GZA (Wu Tang). He did the same and used 2 tracks in one clip (Shadowboxing/4thChamber). That clip in turn gave birth to the idea that we could maybe blend two tracks. Originally we only planned for it to be a promo, but once we started brainstorming, the idea with a storyline was incorporated and it grew from there. We approached Heathen Steelburg to help with the camera work and capture our ideas. It really just fell together in our favour.

aahh: Tell us a bit about how you all became involved in the hip hop scene?
Kings Konekted: We had all been playing & listening to rap since early primary school days, though our (Culprit & Dontez) first encounter with the Brisbane scene really came about through the graff writers. We’d herd Lazy’s “on or off tap” later in 2000 which really grew on us. Other writers & crews were talking about lazy doing shows in Brisbane so some of our older brothers took us along and that’s were it all really started. We had no ambitions of being on stage at that time.

aahh: Can you give us any details on the upcoming album, Corrupted Citizens. Will it follow in the same tone as The Campaign EP?
Kings Konekted: The CC Album is a matured version of our original sound. It is definitely a different tone to that of “The Campaign”. It’s deep, its funny, its intense, its vivid & somewhat a lot more versatile. It’s a documentation of Culprit & my life through the last ten years all on one album. It touches on a range of emotions and is geared for our listeners to relate. We have put everything we had on every verse, every beat and every aspect of this album.

aahh: You’ve recently signed to Class A Records, home to such artists as Thirstin Howl & Rack Lo, MF Grimm, Chino XL and more. What does it mean to you as a crew to sign with a label that has quality artists such as these?
Kings Konekted: To be on board Class A is an honour. It’s an important move who you work with and we’re happy with how were progressing. Quality music is our priority and we all correspond with that. We certainly work at different paces but we all stay focused. There is a lot of expectation to live up to both under the name Class A and Kings Konekted, and we don’t let it slip our minds.

aahh: You recently played ‘Stand Up’, in your hometown of Brisbane. What was that like?
Kings Konekted: Stand Up was an indicator of growth amongst the Australian scene. The crowds now are from all walks of life, which we think is  a positive. The Scene needs to go through this period in order to grow. The night for us was a true success. All respects to the organizers (469 Underworld) for making this happen. It was an honor to grace the stage with so much talent. Tom Thum is a maniac performer who really shines when he is live. Lazy Grey just gets better with age, a true master of ceremonies, he was so clear and precise you can really see his experience in vocal control. We were lucky enough to open the KK set with him & that’s a moment we won’t forget!

aahh: Will we see some vinyl coming out of the Kings camp soon, and how viable do you see the vinyl industry in Australia?
Kings Konekted: Vinyl is definitely happening for the E.P that is being pressed as we speak. We should have more details over the next few weeks which we will announce via http://www.classarecords.com and our social networks etc. Vinyl at present seems to becoming popular again, even JB Hi Fi is asking us for vinyl now, it’s a pleasure not many are willing to part with, its done a complete 360!

aahh: Speaking of vinyl you guys worked with Trem on his FTTOHNL record. What was it like being apart of the select few artists who got up on that record?
Kings Konekted: To be honest it’s still sinking in. It was really just a blessing, Strick had already established connections with Trem and he had sent him some of our demos. Trem was very realistic with his feedback which lifted us to push out better verses. He was hearing our progression over the years i guess and we got stronger lyrically and live. We later got to meet and that forged a friendship. It’s crazy to think we were young fans going nuts on the early LC stuff and are now working so closely with him.

aahh: Do you guys expect to tour the country with the LP, and if so where would you guys like to take the record?
Kings Konekted: Well we have locked in a few more shows for June/July. We are playing in Brisbane again with Masta Ace & Marco Polo (Sat – June 15), and we are also playing in Melbourne with Brad Strut (Fri – July 12) which will be a massive double headliner! And we have almost locked in another headline spot for Sydney (Sat – July 6). And we are still waiting to hear back from Trem about a full Aus tour with him which will be amazing for all involved. But that hasn’t been confirmed yet…

Kings Konekted – The Campaign

2 04 2013

Looming at the edge of the underworld’s shadow, Kings Konekted pass off copies of their debut EP The Campaign under a jacketed arm: six tracks of street corner discussions and heavyweight production by Stricknine (Thirstin Howl, Tim Dog, KRS One), Prowla  and Trem. These are tales of treachery, trust and hidden malefactions conducted in broad daylight.

Kings Konekted Campaign cover
Partners in crime from an early age, Indigenous Australian/Italian Dontez and Serbian/Australian Culprit forged their bond through exposure to the self-perpetuating cycle of violence and crime devouring the western suburbs of Brisbane. Bearing witness to a crumbling community, Kings Konekted illuminate the visceral, ugly reality that passers by prefer to ignore. Theirs is a world hidden in plain sight; one ruled by a code of silence, dirty money and thirst for respect.

Production of The Campaign is handled by elder statesmen Stricknine, Prowla and Trem. Standout tracks include the frenetic Repertoire, hostile opener Good Blood and Handshakes, and the intricately layered Debts and Conflicts.

On lead single Repertoire, Stricknine weaves layers of ominous strings and an urgent harpsichord loop through thick drums and a foreboding bassline. Dontez delivers a ferocious rebuke, setting the stage for Lazy Grey’s scalding feature, thick with cultural references that only a veteran can deliver. Culprit’s final verse is a searing warning to pretenders to the throne, with Stricknine’s precision cuts demonstrating his trademark flair for sample selection.

KingsKonekted4
“It’s the winners, losers, beggars, choosers, innocent and guilty, dealers and the users: we’ve sewn up this industry and started from a thread.”

The sinister atmosphere of Good Blood and Handshakes, followed by the sharp ambush of The Round Table (feat. Brad Strut) displays Prowla’s cavernous and impenetrable production at its best. ‘Secular Security’ (feat. MF Grimm) draws us inexorably towards The Campaign’s standout, Repertoire. Typically refined and densely layered production from Trem on The Standard and Debts and Conflicts brings the EP to a chilling close, with Stricknine’s cuts slicing to the bones.

Kings Konekted garnered a cult following among fans and hip hop luminaries alike with their 2009 pre-album release Trails to the Underlair  They are the only Australian group to be signed to Class A Records, whose alumni include MF Grimm and Thirstin Howl III, and were the only up and coming artists featured on Trem’s seminal For The Term Of His Natural Life LP.

The Campaign will be released nationally on CD and iTunes on April 19. An extremely limited run of vinyl will be available for online pre-orders and in selected independent stockists. Kings Konekted will tour with Trem for his national album launch in 2013.

FRE$HEEP – Antidepressants

17 12 2012

For the past 16 years, DJ Sheep has been recognised worldwide as a DJ, turntablist, 3-time DMC DJ Champion, hip-hop journalist and record dealer. Having dabbled in beat-making in the past, it’s been over 10 years since he touched the MPC to make a beat, preferring to supply samples and records to producers around the world such as Jake One, Paul Nice, Edan, Southpaw Chop, DJ Shadow, DJ Babu, Cut Chemist, Buckwild (D.I.T.C.), Egon (Stones Throw), DJ Revolution and many others.

Fre$heep

Reaching a very dark moment in his life, DJ Sheep decided to focus his efforts and energy into his first release collaborating with long-time friend, Matty Fresh (The Ginza Crime Library) forming the production crew FRE$HEEP. Their debut album Antidepressants features 14 tracks, sourcing some of the dustiest soul records and drum breaks in DJ Sheep’s extensive, world recognised record collection, known as the Bulletproof Crates.

The album was made in a marathon 8 sessions over 8 days, using a total of 14 x 45s and 14 x LPs. This time frame was a huge effort for DJ Sheep, who hasn’t touched the MPC in over 10 years. FRE$HEEP followed their hip-hop sensibilities and made a throwback album to the past with hard drums whilst combining dark and moody soul as blueprint for the album’s trademark sound. The album features some original samples used on the project as well as interludes, bringing a mixtape feel to the project. It’s more of a listening album from start to finish, rather than a CD of just instrumentals.

The album features some guests of the highest calibre including Roc Marciano, J-Zone – who makes his debut appearance as a live drummer, Terntable Jediz (R.I.P.) and Chief Chinchilla. The album also features shout-outs from some of DJ Sheep’s personal friends in the industry who he’s collaborated with over the years: Biz Markie, Lord Finesse (D.I.T.C.), Grandwizard Theodore (The inventor of the Scratch / Zulu Nation), Trem (Lyrical Commission), Necro, Animoss (Arch Druids), Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks), Vanderslice and a special introduction to the album from Chief Chinchilla & J-Zone (Old Maid Billionaires).

This album has a very deep meaning and the music was made to help those who deal with depression and uplift their spirits and also bring back the sound of the 90′s that’s missing with hip-hop today. The drum breaks are loud in the mix, and the samples are dusty and crackly. This album will appeal to diggers, music fans, soul lovers and people that love the Boom Bap sound. It will appeal to fans of Pete Rock, Dilla, The RZA, Mobb Deep and Large Professor, and artists with a similar sound.

The front and back cover artwork was hand made by one of the most respected graffiti artists in Australia: MALIS (750 Rebels), making his debut for a full album cover.

FRE$HEEP have described the sound on this album as boom bap soul. They hope you enjoy this album as much as they enjoyed making it. It’s music for the soul that’s hard-hitting and accessible to not just hip-hop fans, but lovers of good music. This release has currently sold out in all formats, CD and 7″. Although, you may be able to pick up a copy here and a few other places if you do the diggin’.

1. Champix Dreams, Codeine Thoughts feat. J-Zone & Chief Chinchilla
2. Good Morning Depression
3. Where You Been?
4. Wake Up, Don’t Cry
5. People Talkin’ feat. Terntable Jediz (R.I.P.)

Xidus Pain (UK) & Johnny Crates (AUS) – Crates of Pain LP

6 06 2012

Crates Of Pain is a raw uncut hip hop album entirely produced by Melbourne’s Johnny Crates, starring the premium writing abilities of Xidus Painfrom the UK. Featuring guest spots from songstress Renee Soul on Know The Way and cuts by Peterborough DJ, beatboxer and producer Shure Fya, who blesses the album with some prime cuts on Pen Play, Play Pen as well as Game Genie.

The track Game Genie is a packed with countless double entendres and metaphors over smooth hypnotic beats. The concept of the track is based around the old school game Genie Converters for Sega Mega (Genesis). The game genie enabled the player to cheat through a varied sequence of codes, due to the track been written in a complex sequence, the listener can decipher the codes, or just take the song on face value.

This project came about after UK rapper Xidus Pain (a member of Chess Move Cartel crew and Guerrilla Republik) was given the beat album Diggaz For Life by Dr Shrink & Idem, after which Xidus wrote to one of Idem’s beats.

Melbourne hip hop producer extraordinaire Johnny Crates, previously known as Idem, has a rich history with Australia’s underground elite hip hop artists which dates back to the ’90′s. Including working alongside the likes of Prowla, Trem, Raise, as well as fellow Positive Direction group members Seany B (also of The Statesman) and Ron Rugged. It has been 15 years since his last collaboration with an emcee.

The beauty of Crates of Pain lies in its variation of styles, each song is approached differently, yet still manages to blend well. Whether you’re a hip hop head or not, the wordplay, beats, and unique fusion of two very different artists, will have your head nodding.

P.Link – In My Element

6 02 2012

Hailing from the notorious district of South Auckland, New Zealand, P.Link & his mother crossed the Tasman at the tender age of 3 in search of greener grasses. Settling briefly in Melbourne’s outer east, His fam quickly decided that coastal life was for them after a weekend visit to his future home – Phillip Island. Along with his partner in crime, J.Mac, P was consumed by the artform and the natural progression to penning their own material was made.

A few years later alongside local MC’s – Downpat, Eazy, Lystic, Drummer – Lorne, Keyboarder – Brez & DJ – A-Tap they formed the 8-piece Tranquil Artillery. After many beer-fueled, school night Jams, Tranquil made their stage debut in 2003. After making a little noise locally they set out for Melbourne city, earning themselves a solid live rep including shows with – Lyrical Commission, Bliss N Eso, 360, TZU & countless others. After a few years honing his stage presence with Tranquil, P.Link took some time out from the group to concentrate on his new Project – The Aphilliates, consisting of himself, J.Mac & DJ Rellik, he aimed to take it back to the raw Melbourne sound he was raised on.

Within a little over a year they recorded and independently released The Aphilliates Mixtape & once again started earning themselves a solid live rep under the new moniker. While promoting the mixtape P also started gathering up old & new material to put together a small solo release. What started as a side project soon turned into his main focus and before long he had recorded a 6 track EP entitled In My Element.

In My Element is furious 6 track EP, recorded by Must at Pang Productions, featuring production from the man himself – Must, The King – Trem One & Canadian AphilliteEngineer with cuts from DJ Rellik and one guest spot from fellow Rawthentic stable mate – J. Mac.

In My Element gives the listener a brief introduction to the Melburnite behind the mic, through graphic tales of heartbreak, friendship, betrayal and everything in between. Riddled with cuts and proper producto, In My Element stays true to the art with P.Link displaying a huner and presence very few ‘newcomers‘ can match.  In My Element is available now through independent record stores, online via Soul Calp and coming soon digitally via iTunes.

Tracklist
1. Tell em its P – produced by Must
2. In my element – produced by Must
3. Welcome 2 Melbourne – produced by Trem
4. Told me she loved me – produced by Engineer
5. Its a shame – produced by Must
6. Fatal attraction feat. J. Mac – produced by Trem
