Interview: Allday – Loners Are Cool

10 04 2013

Still buzzing from scoring a place in the triple j Hottest 100 with the track “So Good” and playing a host of summer festivals including Big Day Out, Allday releases his EP Loners are Cool, a sophisticated take on contemporary hip hop. Allday’s clever observational style and melodic lyrical flows slide over beats from the likes of producer One Above (Hilltop Hoods, Illy) to create Australia’s exciting answer to Drake or Frank Ocean.

Allday_EPFrontSML

aahh: What a big 12 months it’s been for you, moving to Melbourne from Adelaide, appearing in the triple j Hottest 100 and also releasing a couple of mixtapes plus a brand new EP. Has this been the craziest 12 months ever?
Allday: Believe it or not it has been the least crazy 12 months ever, basically everything in the last 12 months has taken a lot of work and not a lot of partying. Looking back at every other year of my life and the various bad decisions I’ve made, this ranks as the tamest.

aahh: I want to ask you about your E.P A Skateboard Soiree. You teamed up with beatmaker C1, how did this relationship develop?
Allday: Actually he contacted me on Facebook and it went from there. He’d seen a video of me rapping into a webcam that was on youtube. We just kicked it, had similar interests and influences and we knocked the E.P out in about 3 weeks. He had just quit his job to focus on music and I’d just moved to Melbourne. Kind of seems like fate.

aahh: Did you expect the response you received for ‘A Skateboard Soiree?
Allday: Not at all, if we expected that to happen we probably would have spent a bit longer on it. At the time we just wanted to chuck something out for fun. I probably had 10 or 20 serious dedicated fans and I was basically doing it for them. Luckily Triple J liked it, some bigger artists like Bam Bam & 360 helped out and posted it and it got bigger than expected.

aahh: So Good, is a track that was really one of your break out tracks, it also appeared in the hottest 100 earlier in the year. What do you think it is about this track that people related to so much?
Allday: I think the theme, although it’s about mental illness kind of, is also kind of universal. Because the theme of the song is really ‘things aren’t perfect but I’m going to make a choice to deal with them and enjoy my life.’ Also it goes ‘mono mono mono’ and gets stuck in your head.

aahh: Moving on to the brand new EP, Loners Are Cool. What did you want to accomplish with this release?
Allday: Firstly I wanted to really make my song writing more direct and meaningful. Songs like Otto and That Phone Is A Brick are fairly polished as far as concepts and wordplay go and I guess I just wanted to test myself and go down that road. When I was writing the E.P I hit a wall where I didn’t know what to write about, I make pop influenced hip hop but I don’t want to say ‘having fun at the beach yada yada yada’, unless I can do it in an intelligent or a new way. I feel like I did that, and I made a better finished product than any of my older stuff. With that in mind though I feel like I can still get a lot better.

aahh: The debut single from the album features Brady James and is titled Girl In The Sun, tell us a bit about the track and clip, we hear you teamed up with a Swedish beatmaker for this one?
Allday: Girl In The Sun is a love song bout the early stages of a relationship. I guess I tried to capture that feeling when you’re just so deep that everything in your life seems like a movie montage. We went for a one take video because we wanted to keep it light and engaging. Woodz made the beat, he made two others on the E.P too. He hit me up about beats from Sweden, god knows how he even came across my music, and I loved his stuff.

aahh: Momo from Diafrix appears on a track titled ‘Single Mother Song’, what did he bring to this track?
Allday: MoMo just has a silky voice and is an amazing musician. I really wanted to get MoMo on the E.P because we became good mates after touring together. I learnt heaps about how to not only be professional but also be a good person from the Diafrix boys, definitely some of the best people I’ve come across in the industry.

aahh: One Above produces the track ‘That Phone Is A Brick’, what was it like working with him? He’s produced some amazing tracks lately.
Allday: One Above is an absolute monster, I bugged him for a bit to get beats even though he was too busy and probably didn’t want to give any to me. He’s actually from right around my area in Adelaide too and we have a lot of mutual friends. It’s crazy to have someone who musically talented in our scene and I definitely lucked out getting him on a beat.

aahh: You are currently on a ten date tour around Australia, tell us about that, is this your first tour of this size?
Allday: It is my first headline tour, I love getting to go different places and meeting fans. It’s definitely the easy part of being a musician. The difficult part is that my DJ Mikey Hundred and I are both legally retarded when it comes to maps and navigation so we end up exploring weird parts of the country. One time we also saw a guy do a hit and run in his car and we tried to chase him down instead of going to sound check.

aahh: You had the Adelaide launch held at the Ed Castle on the weekend, what was that like?
Allday: It was a pretty crazy show, the stage got rushed and a few people were going nuts. It’s always good to come home and hang in Adelaide. It definitely has a different vibe to other cities, but unless you’re from there it’s difficult to see its appeal sometimes.

aahh: Is there an album in the works? Where are you at with it?
Allday: I’m going to drop a free mixtape first then head toward an album. I just want to make sure it’s a really good product when I put it out. So I’ve basically recorded 0 tracks, written 0 tracks and locked down 0 beats. But it’s forming in my mind.

Illy Announces National Tour

18 06 2012

Off the back of his new smash single Heard It All, snowballing emcee Illy has announced a huge national tour throughout August and September. As well as major cities, the tour hits towns as far and wide as Toowoomba, Dubbo and Falls Creek, and will be the first chance for fans to hear material from Illy’s soon-to-bereleased third album Bring It Back, live and in the flesh. In support will be Chasm Soundsystem feat. Scryptcha.

Illy’s sophomore album The Chase spawned the powerful and well-loved singles Cigarettes (triple j Hottest 100 #25), The Chase and the Gold-selling It Can Wait feat. Owl Eyes (triple j Hottest 100 #29). It took him on two sold out headline tours, an endless list of festival bills and scored both ARIA and AIR Award nominations. Illy has thrown more fuel on the fire with Heard It All. The album features creative collaborations with his local hip-hop peers including M-Phazes, Pez, Trials (Funkoars), Mantra and Reason.

Illy said, “Bring It Back is a record I’ve had in mind for some time. Usually I work with a very small team so being able to branch out and work with lots of new people has resulted in a really different sound. There are a bunch of songs on Bring It Back that I can’t wait to do live, so getting back out on the road can’t come quick enough!”

In support is Chasm Soundsystem, one of the leading hip-hop producers in Australia who has worked with local heavyweights such as The Herd, Resin Dogs, Dialectrix, Thundamentals, Urthboy and Skryptcha. Chasm’s new album This Is How We Never Die is out now through Obese. Tickets on sale 9am, Tuesday 19 June. See below for dates and venues. Heard It All is available now on iTunes. Drapht – The Life of Riley: Drops April 1 + Download ‘On & On’ for FREE

31 03 2011

Triple J, Drapht,The Ayems Records and Fidelity Corporation are incredibly proud and happy to announce the release of Drapht’s new studio album The Life of Riley, as well as the tour to launch said album around the nation. It’s been a long time coming and a hell of a process but we assure you, The Life of Riley has been worth the wait.

To quote the man himself, “Never in my life have I put so much time and energy into one single thing. Mentally, the making of this album broke me and drove me to the brink of insanity on so many different occasions, a song wasn’t worthy of the record unless it did so.”
The Life of Riley will be the first release on Drapht’s own label The Ayems, which is distributed through Sony Music. “The concepts and subject matter around The Life of Riley are based on living the life you want to live, not abiding by society’s pressures and no longer working for the man. So I thought it would be a fitting time to start my own label The Ayems. The Life of Riley will be released on April 1st.

The Rapunzel single was the first taste of The Life of Riley and was a very very big track at radio, as well as coming in a healthy #12 on the Triple J Hottest 100. We are proud to announce that Rapunzel has now been certified platinum on the ARIA single charts. The Life of Riley is an incredibly diverse album with material derived from a wide range of influences, and adds to what is already a broad musical palette over the breadth of Drapht‘s back catalogue.

Of course the best way to celebrate a new album is to get out and tour it, and Drapht is leaving no stone unturned on that front. We are very happy to announce that not only is Drapht heading out on the Groovin’ The Moo Festival to take it to the regionals, he is getting his full live show together to showcase The Life of Riley to the nation. It’s a large tour with a large line-up, with Drapht enlisting his good friends Mantra and The Tongue as supports to help give the album the launch it deserves. Dates are below, and relax Sydney, we have a special date for you to be announced soon!

Urthboy’s Top 8 for 2009

14 01 2010

Urthboys Top ummm 8 for 2009.

1. Fashawn – Life as a Shorty
Flipping the Inspectah Deck line from C.R.E.A.M, Fashawn gets his autobiographical on in this swinging beat from Exile. I love this tune and this whole album (Boy Meets World), it’s half science and half west coast swaggering street talk – enough so that you can’t peg him into any one scene. I grew up on political rap; NYC bragging rap; gangsta rap; Native Tongues cool shit – so I love hip hop that represents a cross section of these styles. I highly recommend this record (it’s one Stones Throw).

2. Brother Ali – Fresh Air
It’s all about the vibe in this uptempo nugget, and even a bit of slap bass can’t bring this banger down. Ali delivered bigtime on this record ‘Us’ – good times and struggle rarely get communicated with such perfect pitch and flavour. I defy you to hear this tune and not crack a smile. I say all this from the perspective of someone who never really dug Ant’s production (his snares have always grated me). Dope.

3. Mos Def feat. Slick Rick – The Auditorium
In a 2 year period when a lot of formerly great rappers made big comebacks (Raekwon, Q-Tip, Pharoahe) Slick Rick has quietly ushered himself in the backdoor – and this cameo took the cake. Mighty Mos holds it down as per usual (one of the best ever imo) and the Arabic strings courtesy of a weird re-hash of an instrumental Madlib tune let the semi-surreal lyricism of Slick Rick win the day.

4. Raekwon – About Me
He stunned everyone with this album – a big return to form after his last shoddy record. There are numerous ill tunes here but About Me wins simply cos of a monster Dre beat (imagine Wu Tang with Dre production – owww!) so even if Busta ain’t in his sharpest form the tune still makes little people want to make big noise out of their car stereos (like me)!

5. Beirut – Nantes
My brother put me onto Beirut ages ago but I never really went there – he said Beirut was sorta Unkle Ho but done indie. This is a fantastic album, melancholy east indie – horns splashing in a sea of instruments. I dig the living shit outta this song.

6. Horrorshow – Walk You Home
When I originally got excited about Horrorshow I often wondered how their thoughtful and gentle lyrics would go down in the hip hop scene. Oddly enough, they’ve been one of the revelations of the last 18 months in a scene that is often dominated by a very blokey output. On Walk You Home, Adit samples a Sufjan Stevens banjo part and all the pieces come together beautifully when Solo’s “if not the one, than you’re the first” line still sums up why I’m such a fan of this duo.

7. Buck 65 (feat. Sufjan Stevens) – Blood Part 2
Buck 65′s hip hop credentials have never been in question in my head, especially after seeing him rock the simultaneous MC and DJ live show – I respect anyone who can hold that shit down. Saying that, I don’t check for him now and I didn’t really like him that much back in the day. This tune is spoken word over a stripped back beat with Sufjan providing a massive chorus – notice Buck never losing his rhythm whilst spilling out scene after scene of lyrical imagery – always something new revealed each listen. It’s intense, dense and memorable.

8. Thundamentals – Sleeping on your Style
Title track of their 2009 album – I reckon they got this one right. The darker beat (reminds me a little of Hermitude) contrasts well with their warm back and forth vocal delivery. The tightness of the overall album is fresh but it also felt a little samey to me if listening to it all in one sitting. These guys have a mad live show and a definite musical approach that sets em apart from most Oz groups. Looking forward to seeing what these guys do next. Blue Mountains represent!

You can vote for your top 10 or  of 2009 via Triple J Hottest 100. Voters can also enter a competition to win ‘The Golden Ticket’, a pass to every JJJ-supported gig and festival for the whole of 2010! BUT HURRY! Voting closes this Sunday, January 17th so please vote for some hip hop. You can do that here.

Also if you missed it last year, Urthboy was nice enough to give out a few free downloads to end a great year of hip hop.

Skryptcha’s Top 10 of 2009!

22 12 2009

After a poor showing last year, it’s time to get some aussie hip hop in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2009. Each week leading up to the countdown allaussie hip hop will provide you with a selected Australian artists  ‘Top 10′ of the year.

To kick things off we have Skryptcha, the 22-year-old Sydney MC who released his Left To Write EP earlier in the year which featured hits like Food For Thought and a fav of ours Turtles. Here’s a bit on what Skryptcha had to say about his upcoming album titled ‘One Way’ due for release early 2010.

Expect some insane production from the likes of my man Chasm, M-Phazes, Jase & Ante Escobar, among others.  Almost half of the album has been produced by the legendary Domingo from NY and I can tell you, these beats are going to blow a lot of people. Domingo’s been an absolute legend in working with me on arrangements for the bangers and I can’t wait to play this new shiet to everyone!!!

Skryp’s Top 10 for 2009.
Thundamentals – The Mash
The Thundas had a huge year.. I absolutely loved their album and this was my favourite joint off it. Probably the catchiest, funkiest joint to come out of Oz hip hop this year. Tuka & Jeswon really smashed this track with some incredible flows. The beat grabs you right from the minute it drops in, it’s definitely the perfect track for Summer.

Hilltop Hoods – Still Standing
This was my favourite track off the Hoods’ massive album ‘State of the Art’. The whole album was killer but it’s the beat that really grabbed me on this track. I’m a huge fan of reggae style sounds and Suffa absolutely murdered the beat, the raps are well beyond killer too!

La Roux – Bulletproof
La Roux makes some really different music, which is sick and this track pretty much has it all. A really catchy techno beat with some fat synths and a hook that really grabs the listener. I just really love how different she is and this track was definitely a stand out for this year.

Mos Def – Auditorium feat Slick Rick
The ruler is BACK! Haha, I was so pumped to get my hands on a brand new Mos Def album this year. He’s one of my favourites of all time and was definitely at his soulful best on this one. This beat is absolutely incredible, Madlib kills it with the middle eastern sample.. The track’s topped off by some Slick Rick domination, I didn’t really know how he’d sound next to Mos but it’s killer, his verse is so chilled like the dude just knows he’s the shit. Dope, dope track!

Royce Da 5’9  – Dinnertime feat Busta Rhymes
Shiiettt, this track blew me away completely when I first heard it! The beat is huge with some massive horns pumping through your ears & Royce’s flow on this track is one of the best you will ever hear. He’s an absolute beast and completely slays this. So dope to hear Busta smashing itagain too. I’m a massive fan and an even bigger fan of this track!

Jay-Z feat Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind
This was song of the year for me. A true anthem in every sense of the word, Jay & Alicia Keys pay homage to the ‘home of hip hop’, New York. Another killer beat with a massive hook from Keys. I love Jay’s imagery on this track, from the Knicks to Yankees to Broadway, to the whole NY vibe. This song is just large, real takeover feel to this one!

The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition
This is one really hypnotic track, the type of song you just get completely lost in. The voice of the lead singer Dougy, is pretty damn incredible and just glides over the fast paced drums. A pretty huge song for this year and one that plenty of people have fallen in love with, with good reason.

Sarah Blasko – We Won’t Run
Sarah Blasko is one incredible artist and she totally nailed it with this album. I’ve been a huge fan of Peter Bjorn & John for quite a while so to have Bjorn Yttling from the group produce this album was always going to deliver something pretty special. The production on this track is bananas. I love a good strong bassline on any track and this one is just so chiller, Blasko sits on it really nicely. The track builds up really smoothly to the hook too, which really launches the whole track to the next level with some nice keys behind it.

Eddie Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros – Home
This track was probably the biggest surprise of the year for me. It was one of those tracks that I just heard in the car one day and was instantly sucked in by it. A good solid whistling section is always something that catches a listener haha and this grabs you from the first second. The female vocalist on this track has such a like 60′s folk voice, it sounds like something from a completely different decade, which is why I think I dig it so much. It’s a completely hippied out track with some beautiful lyrics.

Jay-Z – Death of Autotune
This was the first taste I got of Blueprint 3 and I was completely geed after hearing this. Jay put the auto-tune trend to bed. The beat from No ID is bananas with that swinging guitar running back and forth you can’t help but nod your head to this one, the horns that come in are hectic too. Lyrically, this track is a real stand out, ‘This is Sinatra at the Opera, bring a blonde’. Haha, it was dope for Jay to come out like this and really attack what a lot of artists were doing the States, artists he’s probably been involved with in the past too. Dope to see a boss getting on top of another ‘trend’ on such an amazing beat.

What a killer year we had in 2009! Can’t wait for the next one!

Stay tuned next week for another artist’s top ten of the year and make sure you get you vote on in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2009. Follow the link here to vote.

Check out below, some of the aussie hip hop artists top 10 for the year. We will do our best to bring you some other artist’s opinions + also allaussie hip hop’s top 10 for the year.

Chasm & Vida Sunshyne
* Blakroc – Aint Nothing Like You ft Jim Jones & Mos Def
So much soul to this joint, the music is beautifully arranged and played, Mos Def murders the hook in the most soulful way and Jim Jones actually sounds really dope flowing over this track, perfect combination.

* Major Lazer – Hold The Line
Killer combo of surf guitar, dancehall rhythms, crazy sounds and Santigold, awesome.

* Kid Cudi – Day n Nite (Crookers Remix)
This remix gives the track that much more impact than the original, heavy synth work, a straight banger.

* Thundamentals – I HIP HOP
Bassline and bottom end is so dope on this track, DJ Morgs kills the beat, this track is one of the freshest of ’09 Australian rap.

* Redman & Method Man – A-Yo
Red and Meth manage to pull off a west coast style, summertime jam really well with this joint! Makes you wanna jump in the car and cross town to the beach bumpin this one, feel good music.

* Raekwon – New Wu
Rae made the Wu relevant again with this album and this first single, the old Wu flavour that everybody has been waiting years for returned, smoked out blunted soul at its best.

* Jay-Z ft. Alicia Keys – Empire State Of Mind
Epic tribute to New York, love this tune, Alicia Keys murders the hook and the beat is massive.

* Million Dan – Kill Dem ( Shortee Blitz Dubplate)
Killer killer rhymes from our favourite UK MC over a Busta Rhymes instrumental, damn this is unreleased but is a hot track – check it out at http://www.myspace.com/milliondan

* Gully Platoon – Gully Kicks
Big tune from the Gully side, three of the best rappers in Oz putting it down on a crazy beat, too large.

* Speech Debelle – Better Days
Great lyrics and so much style flowed on this beautiful Plutonic Lab production.

Kween G
KillaQueenz

* Swizz Beats – Who’s Real?
Love Swizz beats production and this is an important question.

* Drake – Successful
This guy has blown up this year and this was a song a woke up to in 09 ” I just wanna be Successful”.

* Tech 9 feat Mims – Rock n Rollin
Have you heard the clever rhyming in this? They use Rock Stars to describe all kinds of things.

* MC Lyte – Rocking With The Best
MC Lyte has been dropping some nice tunes this year and its great to have one of the longest standing female MC’s still in the game.

* Wu-tang Clan feat Sadat X – Sound The Horns
What can I say this track is Phat!

* Slaughterhouse – Microphone
Royce da 5’9, Crooked I, Joe Budden and Joel Oritiz put iy own for the microphone one of my fav albums this year. This track kills it.

* A&E | Little Young
Masta Ace and Edo G dropped an album recently called Arts & Entertainment this track is pure truth talking about all these bubble gum and it’s produced by M-Phazes.

* Emma Donovan – Ngarraanga
A local sister with such a strong angelic voice this song touched me because of its message to the stolen generation.

* Redman & Method Man – Hey Zulu
It’s Meth and Red. They are always banging the illest tracks. Blackout 2! Great album!

* KRS & Buckshot – Survival Skills
This is head nodding music. Two super lyricist’s on one album with features from the best of em…. Straight Skillz!

Hau Latukefu
Koolism – Triple J Hip Hop Show
* Mos Def – Revelations
A complete artist. Raps, sings, acts – man, don’t you hate those sorta guys? Mos strips it back on this one. A slinky beat and Mos just killing em with the rhymes: “Skywalker, baby, ain’t no jackin’ my hammer/ Got a whole lot to say so I ain’t talking to them”

* Beanie Sigal ft. 50 Cent – I Go Off
The Broad Street Bully doing exactly what the title says. The tune is raw hip hop at its finest. Soon as the beat kicks in, it makes you screw up your face. 50 Cent having a go at Jay-Z also adds to it’s ‘I don’t give a f*ck’ attitude. Nasty.

* Wiley – Off the Radar
Wow. Ol’ Eski Boy really let loose on this one. Sounds like he really wanted to shut up the haters once and for all with a vicious flow and lyrics that seem to go on for days. And days.

* Q-Tip – Getting’ Up
“Sent you a message, sent you an email…”. This is just a beautiful song. From the Black Ivory sample to the simplistic rhymes to the harmonies in the chorus. This is the track that your girl loves so much you wonder if she’s thinking of you or Q-Tip when she sings it around the house.

* Daniel Merriweather – Red
I always thought this guy had an incredible voice but just hadn’t found his own style yet. But when I heard some tracks that were going to be on his stunning debut album, ‘Love & War’, I was gob smacked. This particular tune has it all. Emotion, depth, character. Big fella kills it.

* Jay-Z – DOA
It was like Jay knew exactly how I felt; “Enough with all this auto-tune already!”. Sean Carter may not have been able to come with the lyrics and delivery, however, if it weren’t for a monster beat provided by Kanye West’s mentor, No ID. The track just bangs and you know when Jay says something is finished, it pretty much is. Cristal, anyone?

* Statik Selektah ft. Styles P & Talib Kweli – The Thrill is Gone
The track reminds me of something De la Soul would have done in the early 90′s. Not to say that it sounds dated, but it has that soulful, jazzy hip hop vibe that was circulating at that time. Was good to hear P and Kweli on the same track, too. Something you would play during the summer and reminisce about the golden oldy hip hop.

* Sean P – Car Thiefs
I’m a big fan of Sean Price. He can be considered a hardcore hip hop artist but he also has a great sense of humour (which a lot of hardcore MCs lack). There are plenty of tracks I could of picked, but I’ll run with this one.

* Royce Da 5’9 – Shake This
Something special happens when Royce and DJ Premier get together. Here, Royce steps up his pen game (is that possible?) and Premier reaches beyond his trademark production sound. ‘Shake This’ reminds me of Nas’ classic track, ‘One Mic’.

* De La Soul – La La La
De La still mashing it 20yrs in the game. Which is a mean feat in hip hop. This track is vintage De La. Intelligent, funky and catchy. A cruising late-night type of tune.
