TZU – Beautiful (Ta-ku Remix)

5 12 2012

After the release of TZU’s third studio album, Computer Love, in the Winter of 2008, Joelistics, Countbounce, Paso Bionic and Yeroc decided it was time to take a break. It was time to live, time to do the things they couldn’t whilst touring a critically acclaimed, j award nominated album.

Things like smelling the roses, making babies and travelling the world. Now, a few years on, the clouds have parted, the flame has reignited and TZU have once again suited up, ready to release their fourth studio LP, Millions of Moments.

Millions of Moments sees TZU delving further into the electronic direction they explored on Computer Love. As colourful collection of original and charismatic tunes, these ‘millions of moments’ are set in Australia at vastly differing times.

The narrative follows the adventures of Persephone. Our mysterious protagonist trials a drug called Chronos, which sends her hurtling through time (Doctor Who style) to inhabit the consciousness of an array of alluring folk.

The passing of time sees TZU in superb form. There is a depth to this eclectic LP that burrows deeper and resonates more intensely than ever before. The band is more confident, more assured, more poised. Joelistics’ vocals buck and sway, blossoming into song, his story-telling bursting with social conscience and far reaching wonder.

Countbounce’s multi-layered production is flawless, cinematic and rich. Upbeat numbers like flagship single Beginning of the End and the elastic Nowhere Home are complemented by evocative scores Heart of Darkness and Running from Zardoz.

New single Beautifuland Criminals and Murderers heave with turbulent lyrics and dark electronic pulses, alongside those more poignant, as in The Window. And Sydney songstress Holly Throsby adds a haunting fragility to the glacial, Breakthrough. Here we have a stunning remix from beatsmith Ta-Ku, flipping TZU’s latest single Beautiful

Sietta – Way Down In The Hole

5 12 2012

James and Caiti from Sietta are about to take a songwriting break over the summer holidays in preparation for their follow up album due for release next year. Not only have they been busy touring with TZU over the last few months, they performed at the Opera House for the one and only night of Dr Seuss Meets Elefant Traks. And what a night it was!

If you’re in Darwin around December 7, then you’ll probably want to catch Sietta at The Happy Yess for their last show of 2012! And what a better way to see the year out with an intimate, limited ticketed show at one of Darwin’s iconic community venues, the Yess. Oh, by the way, this gig will be the first show the guys will be filming professionally. So you if you wanna be in an exclusive first time ever shooting, Grab tickets before they sell out! You can do that here.

Sietta have just released an exclusive free track for those who have joined their monthly newsletter. The track Way Down In The Hole is a cover of Tom Waits track made famous by the hit HBO television show The Wire. Here’s what Sietta had to say about the track.

“Before writing our debut album we sunk our teeth into a lot of media. Music, movies, comedy, art and TV shows. HBO’s The Wire happened to be a favourite between us. We realised that both of us never fast-forwarded the opening credits. Tom Waits had something to do with that. His iconic song ‘Way Down In The Hole’ was interpreted by 5 different artists (including himself) and used as The Wire’s theme song. (S1 – The Blind Boys Of Alabama, S2 – Tom Waits, S3 – The Neville Brothers, S4 – DoMaJe, S5 – Steve Earle) On completion of all 5 seasons of The Wire, we knew the song pretty well and added our version to our repertoire. Please enjoy our lo-fi version of Way Down In The Hole!” – Sietta

Pataphysics – Subversive (Out Now)

10 09 2012

His music has tackled everything from neocolonialism to racism but Pataphysics – AKA outspoken soul hip-hop artist Patrick Marks – deems his debut album Subversive, a musical assault on Australia’s anti-terrorism laws, as a collection of his best work yet.

44 anti-terrorism laws were passed by the Australian Federal Government between 2001 and 2007 and Marks passionately opposes those he feels infringe on freedom of speech. “With  Subversive, I wanted to shout out against these laws that breach civil liberties and human rights, and test boundaries as far as I could.

With heavy subsonic beats and potent lyrics, it’s insurgent rap at its most compelling. In one of the tracks, Treason, Marks actually breaks the Australian Terrorist Legislation, an Australian first for a released song. And in One More Thing, his powerful lyrics demand accountability for those in power and vigilante justice when the system fails to do so. On this track, we hear Arundhati Roy’s words on resistance rhythmically aligned by Pasobionic (Tzu).

So determined was Marks to do his protest justice, he spent seven years perfecting Subversive, which he describes as “hip-hop with soul, at times with a post-bop edge”. It also features his trademark trumpet, creating a highly unique sound compared to other rappers on the scene.

Marks wrote, produced, recorded and mixed the entire album himself, with cameos by hip-hop  royalty such as Rob Swift and Stic.Man (Dead Prez). “It’s rare to have artists of this calibre be interested in collaborating on an independent album. I feel very honoured.Marks says New York legend Swift collaborated with him on Cause It, the track he nominates as his “standout” on the album. “The turntable mastery of Swift on this song is just awe inspiring.”

TZU – Beginning Of The End

19 05 2012

TZU introduce their new single, Beginning of the End their finest, seamlessly merging musical genres and sounds, whilst tackling current global issues head on to create a glorious alternative pop statement. It follows the story of a man who time travels into the future and sees the effects of mankind’s destruction of the Earth – the literal End of the World.

If you’re going to write a song about the end of the world, you want to make it as grand and amazing a tribute to the entire species and all of history (as you can)”, says singer and writer Joel Ma of the tune. And grand Beginning of the End certainly is, complete with a horn section AND a choir! The single is taken from the bands’ fourth studio album, which will be released in the second half of 2012. The new album will see TZU delve further into the electronic direction they explored on Computer Love and ensure they stay two steps ahead of the rapidly expanding pack.

Their last album, the bulk-ace Computer Love was a triple j feature and saw them nominated for the AMP shortlist, the J Award Album of the Year, and an APRA for Best Hip-Hop Artist.

TZU have also just announced an extensive national tour that will see them showcasing new material along with many TZU classics, throughout May and June. No strangers to the touring arena, TZU always deliver live, and have played all of the major Australian music festivals over the years, including Falls, Meredith, Big Day Out and Pyramid Rock to name but a few.

Check out the killer new clip for Beginning of the End, directed by Dimitri Basil. Click through here to look at the comic that complements the song, which sees the central character Persephone – a time travelling drug addled thrill seeker – entering the consciousness of the last man on Earth…

An ode to Brisbane’s notorious night spot of the same name, the tune and clip were inspired by and filmed amongst the grit and circumstance found in abundance on any seedy inner-city nighttime adventure. In Rainman’s own words: ‘It’s a pretty jaded and sarcastic portrait of the epicentre of Brisbane’s nightlife that is Fortitude Valley. It’s a place I definitely have a love/hate relationship with, having had some of the best times in my life there, along with the worst – and a whole heap in between.’

The release also comes with the announcement that Rainman has officially become a newly minted member of the Born Fresh Records family, joining label mates and album co-conspirators including producer Cam Bluff and MC’s Tommy Illfigga, Yuin Huzami, Seven, Mr Hill and more. The Valley follows on the success of recently released first single Darlin’ which was received strongly across the country; receiving triple j airplay, FBI Radio (Sydney) rotation and widespread praise for what critics are calling a “classic slice of hip-hop” (Sherlock Ohms.org).

Joelistics – The Shining EP

4 03 2012

Following on from Joelistics’ debut from 2011, Voyager, is his electro mutant 7 track remix EP featuring new single The Shining. The Shining picks up where Joelistics left off, forging ahead and pushing his sound further outside the realms of hip hop, into a land of pulsing electro and lush electronica.

He hasn’t abandoned the backstory though, with remixes plunging the EP back into hip hop. The charisma and adventurousness of one of our best lyricists shines through in this reimagined format. Lending their remix touch to Joelistic’s material include TZU band-mate Count Bounce, Monkey Marc, Indie dance outfit Rufus, electronic hip hop producers Damn Mroda, Ishu and more.

Voyager was a real quiet achiever in 2011, with songs such as Glorious Feeling and Days only just missing out on the Hottest 100 and having a strong impact on radio and the live scene. The Shining EP is a digital release which dropped Feb 24,. with a limited edition CD available at shows and through Elefant Traks webstore.

Tickets are now on sale for the Running To Shine National Tour featuring Diafrix and Joelistics. You can purchase tickets  and find out more information on that here.

Sietta – No Longer Hurt: Official Video Clip

26 10 2011

Be prepared to be impressed by the fiery electronic soul of Darwin duo Sietta, made up of producer/instrumentalist James Mangohig and vocalist Caiti Baker. Their début album The Seventh Passenger is turning heads in all the right directions.

Both experienced musical childhoods: Caiti travelled throughout Australia to blues and folk festivals with her blues musician father, absorbing dog-eared record collections stocked with Etta James, Memphis Minni and Aretha Franklin; while James sat on wooden church pews with gospel music soaring around him. Caiti spent her entire teenage years recording herself on her dad’s 8 track digital recorder, learning to sing by building harmonies over hip hop tracks; James learnt the bass, performing in numerous bands before honing his skills as a producer. The influence of soulful, spiritual music, helped shaped them: their upbringings bookended by a chance meeting in Brisbane in the mid 2000′s, and the uncanny fact that they were both born in the same Adelaide hospital.

Their first official release was a remix for TZU’s Computer Love remix album, coming off the back of James’ role as bass player in the live band. This was followed up with The Come Back Easy Play EP, a collection of 4 songs developed in the studio with Count Bounce (Ash Grunwald, Urthboy).

Brand new film clip for the track ‘No Longer Hurt’ liffted from Sietta’s LP – ‘The Seventh Passenger’.

Over the course of 18 months Sietta cut their teeth on the road, supporting the live soul of Lowrider to the bass heavy electronics of Mark Pritchard, as well as festivals, showcases and headline shows across Australia. They began to establish themselves as an act that shines brightly alongside live bands or in an electronic setting. In 2010 Sietta began work on their debut album with an inspired set of ideas leading Caiti’s powerful vocals and James’ deep swinging electronic/hip hop production. Once again, Count Bounce (APRA and AIR Award winning, ARIA nominated) was brought in to record and assist with production. The sheer strength and texture of Caiti’s voice could easily be taken down a pop path, but Sietta felt at home in the depths of menacing electronic bass and drums, where beauty doesn’t mean picture-perfect; and lightness is never as illuminating as it is in blinding darkness. It’s in the refreshed imagining of dubstep and blues, hip hop and electronic soul that Sietta tackle themes of empowerment, love, hurt and mental health.

Elefant Traks had always remained within earshot of Sietta’s activities, signing the duo in 2011 after falling in love with the sound they’d created. That sound is ambitious electronic soul drenched in blues and hip hop, a striking record with no peer in Australian music.

Welcome to Sietta’s The Seventh Passenger.
