Dr. Seuss Meets Elefant Traks

19 09 2012

Featuring over 25 musical performers onstage from The Herd, Hermitude, Sietta, Joelistics, Unkle Ho, Urthboy, The Tongue, Jimblah, Jaytee of The Last Kinection and more, Australia’s renowned musical collective Elefant Traks are taking over the Graphic circus with a tribute inspired by the whimsical spirit and imagery of Dr. Seuss.

Throughout over 60 years of children’s classics such as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the wildly imaginative and surrealist universe of Dr. Seuss has enthralled generations. He continues to be one of the world’s most instantly recognisable and best loved visual storytellers.

‘All ready to put up the tents for my circus… and now comes an act of enormous enormance! No former performer’s performed this performance!’ – excerpt from Dr. Seuss’ If I Ran the Circus

Since making their live debut over a decade ago, Elefant Traks artists have entertained far and wide, capping off 2011 with Hermitude winning triple j’s Video of the Year. Australia’s most innovative label will now play with the iconic work of Dr. Seuss in a specially commissioned show for Graphic 2012.

Maintaining their motto to make ‘challenging yet adventurous’ music, the Elefant Crew are set for a fresh injection of Dr. Seuss’ prescription for fun in this fantastically imaginative performance.

Elefant Traks Announces an Industry first ‘CD Plus MPFree’

10 11 2011

Your favourite label is leading the way with a new system of album sales through the Elefant Traks online store called CD + MPfree. Get a CD or vinyl sent to your letterbox; receive the same album as high quality MP3s in your inbox, free and Immediately!

Downloads and cloud-based consumption is undoubtedly the future, but labels still sell more CDs than digital albums. This is about rewarding those who feel the liner note love and value lyric booklets or signed copies, or the joy of a parcel in the mail. It’s two for the price of one, without devaluing either. Not only are they free, but the MP3s are high quality (320kbps).

This is a permanent feature of the store, from our wonderful new signing The Last Kinection and their record Next of Kin to our Darwin stars Sietta. And yes, The Herd , Horrorshow, Hermitude, The Tongue, Urthboy, Joelistics, Ozi Batla, Unkle Ho, Astronomy Class and more.

Horrorshow – Public Consumption (Free Download) + New Merch

2 05 2011

This is a brand new track called Public Consumption from Elefant Traks crew Horrorshow. This little gem was cooked up recently and has now cracked over 1000 downloads in less then 24 hours. Attending Fort Street High School, whose musical output includes Josh Pyke, Unkle Ho (The Herd) and Joelistics among others, both Solo and Adit were heavily involved in bands, ranging from jazz through to rock.

Along with fellow school mates and current One Dayers, Spit Syndicate, they embraced hip hop as the genre made big strides in Australia. Horrorshow have officially solidified their position in the ranks of Australias finest. Check out the new range of Horrorshow merch available at Groovin The Moo and the Running On Air Tour. Each item comes with a free bandtag download card which includes two unreleased acoustic recordings (American Girl and Waiting for the 5.04) from the recent show @ The Basement in Sydney this year. It also includes the brand new song Public Consumption as well as a few songs from the Inside Story and Grey Space albums. You can’t get these acoustic songs anywhere except this sick little card.

The Herd Mark 10 Years With New Single & Tour

8 02 2011

Celebrating 10 years since their debut, The Herd perform their first live shows in two years this autumn. Their first single Sum Of It All drops in March from their fifth album, due August 2011. The Herd are a culturally diverse expression of modern Australia, but they bring with them that grand Aussie tradition of storytellers ready and willing to question authority. If you’ve seen them live, you’ll also be familiar with their ability to laugh at themselves and bring the whole crowd together. Witness the heart of Elefant Traks live on stage this April.

The Herd will be joined by special guest Joelistics
THUR, MARCH 31: CAMBRIDGE HOTEL, NEWCASTLE
FRI, APRIL 1: THE CORNER, MELBOURNE
FRI, APRIL 8:   THE ZOO,  BRISBANE
SAT, APRIL 9: THE FACTORY, SYDNEY
Tickets available from http://www.theherd.oztix.com.au or Oztix 1300 762 545

The Herd formed in 2001 after the core members of Elefant Traks record label decided to collaborate rather than submit individual tracks for a compilation. They retreated from the city for weekends and days off to record at a lakeside house on the Central Coast. What resulted was the self-titled album that featured the Triple J (national youth broadcast radio station) hit Scallops, a song that became an Aussie backyard anthem.
Mid-2002 The Herd put the final touches on the follow-up album, called An Elefant Never Forgets. What started out as a group of individuals working together had now developed into a tight and cohesive band, with members performing shows with each other constantly.
The new album was released in February 2003 amidst the invasion of Iraq by coalition forces. The first single Burn Down The Parliament hit Triple J radio just after the devastating bushfires in Canberra. Fans turned up to the launches in droves, and The Herd became a regular fixture on the road.

The second single, 77% immediately sparked controversy with print, electronic media and talkback radio hosts like Stan Zemanek. The Sydney Morning Herald ran stories on the song and The Herd while talkback hotlines rang hot with curious and furious callers wanting to know more. Despite the uproar, Triple J continued playing the song and hundreds of listeners requested it, eventually being voted into the Triple J Hottest 100.
After years of solid touring, and two solo albums from Herd members (Urthboy and Unkle Ho), The Herd set up a studio in inner west Sydney and created their most ambitious album to date, The Sun Never Sets featuring We Can’t Hear You and Under Pressure. The latter featured Jane Tyrrell, female vocalist and good friend, who subsequently joined the band after some memorable guest appearances at the first two launching shows.

Around October 2005, The Herd performed a cover of Redgum’s classic anti-war song I Was Only 19 on Triple J’s ‘Like a Version’. The song instantly connected with audiences and became the most heavily requested song on the station, leading to an extraordinarily moving film clipfeaturing members of the Vietnam Veterans Federation of Australia. Redgum’s John Schumann became a good friend of the group, recording and performing the song with The Herd. Countless radio, television and print stories followed (including a half hour documentary on Hack, Triple J’s current affairs program) and commercial radio picked up the song. It rated in the top 20 in 2006 Triple J Hottest 100 once again.
The Herd’s reputation as a fiery and electrifying live group only grew in 2006, with high profile spots on festivals, and sold out shows at Sydney’s Metro Theatre and Gaelic Club; The Corner in Melbourne and venues across Australia. In an unconventional set-up, The Herd perform with three MCs, two singers, an acoustic and an electric guitar, bass, piano accordion, clarinet, laptops and MPC 1000s. It’s big!

Elefant Traks 10th Anniversary DVD Review

20 09 2009

the herd dvd allaussie hip hop

Here we go people for the first allaussie hip hop review and its for the Elefant Traks 10th anniversary party Live at the Forum DVD.

As a part of the Elefant Traks 10th Anniversary celebrations, a concert was held late in 2008 featuring performances from The Herd, Hermitude, Urthboy, Horrorshow, Unkle Ho, Astronomy Class and The Tongue. The show was a one off and was professionally filmed and recored. The subsequent footage was turned into a DVD package that has a run time of 130mins and is jam packed with live performances.

The DVD’s cover artwork is made up of the album artwork taken from all of the performing artists, underlying the Elefant Traks logo. Opening the case, you are presented with a nice A5ish sized booklet featuring photos, track list and credits. Personally I would have liked to have seen a bit more effort placed into the booklet. I could have imagined a cool profile on each band with extensive photos of each. Additionally, a write up on the Elefant Traks rise to become one of Australia’s most influential hip hop labels, could have been an interesting read to say the least.

Moving onto the DVD. Right from the start the production and presentation reeks of quality. To watch The Herd live on my widescreen HD tv and 5.1ch surround sound was an exciting experience. The menu of the DVD is split into three different viewing sections; 1) The whole concert 2) Select groups 3) Blondies photos.I found this an excellent way of navigating through the menu.

After selecting the whole concert option, I was greeted by none other than Elefant Traks emcee The Tongue. The Tongue had hosting duties for the night and did an exceptional job. In between sets, The Tongue would interact with the punters and also offer some of his own colour commentary on the events appearing on stage. This offered a nice mix throughout the DVD presentation.

As all of the performances were red hot, I am going to mention below some of the more worthy moments that are worth checking out. If you would like to check out some of the highlights on the DVD, Elefant Traks have posted some of the same ones we have mentioned below. You can check those out by following the links.

Unkle Hoe
Senator Jim on the antenna, this was amazing to see. Catch the cool antenna mix at the end of the track Big Bag Rag.
Unkle Ho – Big Bag Rag here.

Astronomy Class
The Tongue joins Astronomy Class on stage. Nuthin Nice, School Daze and A Bright Tomorrow were all banging tracks. Gina Mitchell joins the guys on stage for School Daze and is one fine looking women with an even finer voice.
Astronomy Class – A Bright Tomorrow here.

Urthboy
Urthboy, Jane Tyrrell and Elgusto don the pirate outfits for the set. Urthboys The Signal is hard to go past as a major highlight and the crowd get right into it. The Tongues comment on Urthboys choice of outfit is a classic.
Urthboy – The Signal here.

Horrorshow
Solo and Adit are set to release their second album Inside Story on October 2, but the song No Rides Left is still a favourite of mine and the live version did not disappoint.
Horrorshow – No Rides Left here.

The Tongue
One of my favorite Elefant Traks artists, the heavily rotated tracks Bad Education and The Punch are clear standouts. We look forward to seeing some big things from the Tongue in the near future. Stay tuned for more on this.
The Tongue – Bad Education here.

Hermitude
Hermitude bring some crazy beats. The end of Cartridge Kingz features a cool keyboard and beat pad showdown from Elgusto and Dubs.
Hermitude – Cartridge Kingz here.

The Herd
How can I select a highlight from this set! Songs performed included, I was Only 19, Burn Down The Parliament, The King Is Dead and 2020 amoung others. The Herd really are a spectacle, that have to be seen live. This will be as close as it gets in your own living room.
The Herd – 2020 here.

All in all I must say we were quite impressed with the quality of the DVD, both in production and sound quality. The high level of production clearly makes up for the lack of effort with the booklet. The performances from each of the Elefant Traks acts are large and can be enjoyed by the average aussie music fan. As for an aussie hip hop DVD, I highly recommend this addition to any aussie hip hop collection, it’s a must have. I give the Elefant Traks 10th Anniversary Party Live at The Forum DVD 4 out of 5.

The Herd and Koolism

5 07 2009

Herd

We have done a post about this concert already (here), but it was such a long time ago that we thought we would refresh your memory about this one. The Herd are rolling through town for their last headline show in over a year.  It’s been a crazy 12 months, complete with top ten charting album, ARIA nomination, J Award for Best Video (2020), AIR Awards for Best independent Artist and Best Hip Hop album. Plus their national tour for Summerland was the biggest tour in their history.

This year was going to be the R & R year with no touring, but after repeated requests, they’re doing a one-off East Coast Tour and one of the main shows is Melbourne on Friday July 24.

Extra special guests for the tour are Koolism.

The tour coincides with the release of the Elefant Traks 10th Anniversary Party DVD – filmed in late November 2008 at the soldout Forum show. Artists on the DVD include Astronomy Class, Horrorshow, Hermitude, Urthboy, Unkle Ho, The Tongue and The Herd.

UNKLE HO – Subterranea

11 06 2009
unkhoe
Unkle Ho are set to release a limited edition EP called Subterranea. 1000 copies and you can pre order yours now. JB Hi-Fi have the album set for $9.99. Heres what they had to say about Unkle Ho.
Welcome to the wonderful upside-down world of Unkle Ho, and his perfectly unconventional new EP Subterranea. Neither poker-faced sophisticate nor court jester, Unkle Ho is the cloaked host from the future, entertaining a grand ball from the past. Predominantly electronic but enhanced with live instrumentation and a cut and paste aesthetic, Unkle Ho has evolved again, elevating the groove of each composition.
The same folks that kicked up their heels to the sounds of Roads to Roma and Circus Maximus will have five more reasons to seek out Subterranea. In his first release since moving to Jakarta, Unkle Ho introduces a Latin feel, an increased synth presence and some infectious vocal samples. Never fear, his beloved tubas, trumpets and violins merrily swing in the mix.
Out July 4!!

Track  Listing:
  1. Kindergarten
  2. Lime Juice
  3. Sarsaparilla
  4. Subterranea
