Urthboy – Smokey’s Haunt

6 09 2012

Co-produced by Hermitude and Countbounce, Smokey’s Haunt is an incredibly produced album of storytelling, flow and melody. Urthboy is at his peak, weaving tales of the city with his past and present; celebrating life with a collection of songs balanced by the tension of light and darkness.

The album should be experienced whole: Smokey’s Haunt is a meeting place of moods that are complete when connected together. The album comes with a 28 page booklet and triple panel digipack. It’s the follow-up album to Spitshine and The Signal, both finalists in the Australian Music Prize. Spitshine won the Australian Independent Award for Best Urban Album; The Signal was nominated for a J Award.

The guests on the record all bring a vitality to their songs. Alex Burnett’s soaring beauty in The Big Sleep is a showstopper; Bobby Flynn’s haunting comfort in Hey Dianne is unforgettable and long-time collaborators Jane Tyrrell and Mark Pearl (Texture Like Sun) are stunning.

There are only a few rappers guesting: the legendary Delta shows why he’s a king in the local scene; while young guns Solo and Jimblah both deliver the greats.

Urthboy – Knee Length Socks

28 08 2012

Urthboy presents the second single form his upcoming LP Smokey’s Haunt, titled Knee Length Socks. The track is an ode to being out of place; of 90s britpop’s weird influence on Urthboy’s songwriting and ultimately about his love of hip hop.

The track was sent out to all ‘Urthlings‘ as an exclusive preview before it’s premiere on triple j. The bold first single, Naïve Bravado featuring Daniel Merriweather, has seen some heavy support at radio and was named iTunes Single Of The Week—raking in over 30,000 downloads in under a week, and quickly spiking to #1 most added (all indie) track at radio.

Although Hermitude and Count Bounce have been exclusive producers of all previous Urthboy material, Smokey’s Haunt is the first album where they’ve co-produced the entire album. The chemistry between all parties was electric, resulting in an invigorated sound and fresh spirit. Apart from putting the finishing touches on his new album, Urthboy has also signed a global publishing deal with the legendary Alberts Music.

The Naïve Bravado Tour kicks off this Thursday, where he will be joined by long-time collaborators Elgusto (Hermitude) and Jane Tyrrell for what promises to be an electrifying live show. The tour’s main support is The Last Kinection—one of the true voices of Indigenous local hip hop.

They will be joined on selected dates by triple j favourites Yung Warriors, Brisbane’s rising star Rainman and more.

Urthboy – Naïve Bravado feat. Daniel Merriweather

31 05 2012

Teaming up with incredible Daniel Merriweather, Urthboy sidesteps peers while exhibiting his trademark sharp flow, songwriting talents and that knack for well-crafted hooks. The concept of Naïve Bravado is like a lamb with a lion’s heart; a broken down car needing a jump start. It’s not a false courage if it leads you out of the mess.

Anchored in running bass lines, ominous horns and monstrous percussive drums—all concocted by the brilliant collaborative production of Count Bounce and Hermitude. Urthboy has kept a frenetic pace since the release of the AIR award-winning, ARIA and AMP nominated Spitshine (2009); with 2011’s Future Shade album from The Herd; and bringing the house down with his rendition of Stagger Lee at Straight To You, triple j’s Nick Cave Tribute concerts.

Naïve Bravado is out now. Taken from Urthboy’s new album, out October 2012.

Tom Showtime – The Jam Thief

10 04 2012

Tom Showtime’s – The Jam Thief is an eclectic fusion of jazzy hip-hop, down tempo beats and nu-funk. The explosive leadoff single Spaces & Places featured the international input of legendary US rapper Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), UK ex-pat Lotek and Ash.One (AUS).

Evidently, this multifaceted talent did not plateau there; the lead single was merely a taste of his stellar album a year in the crafting. With a range of standout tracks including Nature Horn Killer (Tom’s tribute to Charlie Parker), Jazz Biscuits and The Every Sound Track, The Jam Thief takes the listener on a sample heavy journey displaying an array of Tom’s favourite sounds. With distinctive cover design by RekaOne of Melbourne’s legendary Everfresh crew, the artwork is an essential counterpart to The Jam Thief’s music perfection.

Siting inspirations such as DJ Shadow, Mr. Scruff, Quantic and Bonobo as well as a fervent obsession with sampling old funk, latin and jazz – there was no doubt that Tom Showtime was soon to be heard. This dexterous character also claims the labels Saxophonist, Cafe Owner and Gramophone Enthusiast.

Tom’s earnest aspiration has seen him generate some stellar opportunities in his music career to date; supporting such acts as Bonobo, Urthboy and The Bamboos. Making his debut as the warm up DJ for The Nextmen at their highly regarded Friends and Family night, Tom Showtime’s career is proving to be a burgeoning one. The Jam Thief is ‘jam’ packed with premium head nodding tracks fueled with infectious funk and baseline grooves highlighted with Showtime’s signature trip-hop foundation. This album is truly unique and spectacular.

Tom Showtime – The Jam Thief is available April 13.

Rainman is also proud to release the brand new film clip for the single The Valley. An ode to Brisbane’s notorious night spot of the same name, the tune and clip were inspired by and filmed amongst the grit and circumstance found in abundance on any seedy inner-city nighttime adventure. In Rainman’s own words: ‘It’s a pretty jaded and sarcastic portrait of the epicentre of Brisbane’s nightlife that is Fortitude Valley. It’s a place I definitely have a love/hate relationship with, having had some of the best times in my life there, along with the worst – and a whole heap in between.’

The release also comes with the announcement that Rainman has officially become a newly minted member of the Born Fresh Records family, joining label mates and album co-conspirators including producer Cam Bluff and MC’s Tommy Illfigga, Yuin Huzami, Seven, Mr Hill and more. The Valley follows on the success of recently released first single Darlin’ which was received strongly across the country; receiving triple j airplay, FBI Radio (Sydney) rotation and widespread praise for what critics are calling a “classic slice of hip-hop” (Sherlock Ohms.org).
