Joelistics – The Shining EP

4 03 2012

Following on from Joelistics’ debut from 2011, Voyager, is his electro mutant 7 track remix EP featuring new single The Shining. The Shining picks up where Joelistics left off, forging ahead and pushing his sound further outside the realms of hip hop, into a land of pulsing electro and lush electronica.

He hasn’t abandoned the backstory though, with remixes plunging the EP back into hip hop. The charisma and adventurousness of one of our best lyricists shines through in this reimagined format. Lending their remix touch to Joelistic’s material include TZU band-mate Count Bounce, Monkey Marc, Indie dance outfit Rufus, electronic hip hop producers Damn Mroda, Ishu and more.

Voyager was a real quiet achiever in 2011, with songs such as Glorious Feeling and Days only just missing out on the Hottest 100 and having a strong impact on radio and the live scene. The Shining EP is a digital release which dropped Feb 24,. with a limited edition CD available at shows and through Elefant Traks webstore.

Tickets are now on sale for the Running To Shine National Tour featuring Diafrix and Joelistics. You can purchase tickets  and find out more information on that here.

Joelistics – Voyager Records Episode 2

20 05 2011

This is the second episode of Voyager Records, Joelistics’s new series. Things are pretty bad in the future, everyone is pretty much dead. In amongst this post-apocalyptic backdrop, Joelistics decides to open a record store with six records and a box of cdr-s. This is his story.

The adventures of Joelistics continue in Voyager Records Episode 2

http://www.joelistics.com

Written and directed by Peter Brennan

Introducting Voyager, the debut solo record from producer, rapper and singer Joelistics (TZU)

Regarded as one of the most charismatic lyricists in hip hop, Joelistics is one of the most gifted freestylers to have never battled; a true storyteller influenced by shoegazer electronica and folk as much as classic boom bap hip hop. Self-produced and self-assured, Voyager was written in France, Mongolia, China and Australia, tapping into themes of travel, modern world paranoia and growing older.

As part of TZU, Joelistics garnered AMP and J Award nominations and toured the country countless times, playing every major festival. In solo mode, he relishes the freedom to creatively stretch out, exploring universal themes through a laconic personal insight. On the song Head Right he throws down “I’m half Caucasian, still very Asian, a mad variation of what you call Australian”. While the intoxicatingly evocative Heart Remains, shows he’s not just an observer, but rather, part of the land: “the languid heat make sleepless nights, lazy speak, mosquito bites, old timers who drive the road trains rolling cigarettes single handed …I saw it all clear from a house on a hill in a country far away and I thought to myself till the day that I die that’ll be where my heart remains”.

Did we forget to mention this is all wrapped up in some damn catchy shit?

This is a hip hop record that can’t be ignored by those not into the genre. Any preconceptions can’t be applied to the ambition and musical fearlessness that is Voyager by Joelistics. Fresh from captivating crowds on the sold-out Herd tour, Joelistics is gearing up to do it all again – this time joining Lowrider on their Hold On national tour. Joelistic’s debut solo record Voyager is out May 20 on Elefant Traks and his new single Glorious Feeling in now playing on Triple J and is available for purchase below.

Joelistics – Voyager: ‘Stage 3 of 13: Days’

10 05 2011

Joelistics: Days was one of the only songs I wrote from scratch when I got back to Australia. I was trying to come to terms with the large debt I had incurred from my travels and was considering the immediate future and asking myself a series of depressing questions:

Do I want to try and make a living off music again? Should I buckle down and get a real job? Where the hell is my centre? Does anything I do matter? Do I even like rapping any more? All the questions that one eventually comes to once the thrill of touring and releasing albums wears off and you realise you’ve spent a good proportion of your twenties with a hangover, poor credit and leaving a trail of failed relationships in your wake. In response to the malaise I thought I’d write an uplifting little ditty that addressed the issue.

I sat down with a guitar, wrote the melody and then wrote the beat around the chord progression. I like performing Days, I like how honest it is and how at the end of the song I can basically list a bunch of random shit and say that it knows how I feel.

Joelistics first single Days is an uplifting post-travel come down jam. A celebration of doing what you love, only truly realised once it’s questioned. Days, with its shoegazer backdrop and heartfelt lyrics, is not an entirely reliable indicator of his upcoming debut Voyager, out May 6 on Elefant Traks. But like any great adventure the album has many twists and turns and this is just one of them.  Days is available to download now from www.elefanttraks.com – pay what you want or below.

Joelistics will be touring in support of The Herd in March/April:

Tour Dates:

Joelistics – Heart Remains {New album ‘Voyager’ drops May 6}

18 03 2011

With its nod to 90s electronica, Heart Remains captures the vivid lyricism of Joelistics’ debut solo album. This is not the first single – just a taste for you folks that have been waiting so long. The album is called Voyager and is released on Elefant Traks May 6th 2011.

From his time with TZU, Joelistics is regarded as one of the most charismatic frontmen in hip hop, one of the best freestylers to have never battled; a true storyteller influenced by shoegazer electronica and folk as much as classic boom bap hip hop. Self-produced and written in France, Mongolia, China and Australia, Voyager taps into themes of travel, modern world paranoia and growing older.

Elefant Traks Welcome New Signing: Joelistics

9 03 2011

Elefant Traks welcome new signing: Joelistics!! His debut solo album is called Voyager and it drops May 6.

The first single airs late March.  Elefant Traks believe he’s got an absolutely cracking record on his hands and we tend to agree.
………..
“We’ve been mates for ages – we’ve shared a lot of creative, outrageous and funny times – it feels like Joelistics is already part of the fam, he’s a natural fit for Elefant Traks and the album is sick.” Ozi Batla – The Herd
“I’m genuinely excited about him joining forces with ET as a fan more than anything. He’s always had mad charisma and I’ve no doubt that will shine through on the record.” Solo – Horrorshow
“Joelistics… talented, funny, wiseguy.” Elgusto – Hermitude

Joelistics grew up in Sydney, the offspring of a Chinese Australian father and an Anglo Australian mother, playing drums in punk and funk groups, but drawn to hip hop with its outspoken politics and ad hoc sonic cannibalism. At the beginning of the new millennium, Joelistics took the first of a series of ‘voyages’ around Australia, working as a fruit picker, visiting hippie festivals and hitch hiking across the country, eventually settling in Melbourne where he discovered a city going through a creative boom.In 2002 he founded TZU alongside Count Bounce, Yeroc and Pasobionic, signing to Liberation records the same year. Earning their stripes on the live circuit, TZU built a solid reputation on the back of their up-beat party rhymes, joining acts like The Herd, Hilltop Hoods and Bliss n Eso, as a vanguard of the second generation of Australian hiphop forging an identity both artistically and commercially.

After three ambitious records, multiple award (AMP, J Award) nominations, countless festivals and tours, TZU decided to take a breather. Joel embarked upon another voyage, living in Shanghai and Beijing; travelling through Mongolia; and eventually settling in Paris for six months. In between writing for online travel sites and teaching English, he began work on his debut solo album, Voyager.

Armed with a laptop, he wrote all the music on old headphones whilst riding the Trans-Mongolian railway, transiting through airports; and a winter in a one bedroom flat in the Montmartre district of Paris. In 2010 he returned to Australia and moved between Sydney and Melbourne putting the final touches on the album, inking a deal with Elefant Traks in early 2011. Joelistics has always drawn on influences from a wide variety of sources. As a solo artist his sound is grounded in the boom bap of hip hop whilst keenly revisiting his love of beat poetry, shoe gazer electronica and folk to create an album that is both introspective and electrifying. Entirely self produced with few guests, Voyager concentrates on themes of travel, modern world paranoia and growing older. Self-described as the ‘come down record of my late twenties’, his self-deprecating view allows the listener to discover for themselves the joyous optimism and redemption that co-pilots the album.
